This research project focuses on high school athletics social media pages and their relevance to high school communication audiences and institutional communication goals.

I conducted two in-depth interviews with school officials from a large Michigan high school, a survey of the high school sports social media followers, and an analysis of data from that high school’s Facebook page.

I was able to determine that seeing social media content from high school athletics pages had a positive relationship with how the school’s quality of social media communication was perceived, intentions to attend athletic events, and an increased awareness of the school’s …

Nhl Rule Changes In The Media, Brandon Caryl

Sport Management Undergraduate

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the media contributing to the national dialogue involving rule changes in the NHL (National Hockey League). Reporters in the media choose what is published on day to day press releases. What is released is what the consumers are taking in, using various mediums of social media, television, internet, etc. and that is the only knowledge the consumers are getting surrounding a developing story or topic.

Media Members’ Expectations Of A High-Quality Sports Information Director, Michael Walsh

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: The traditional role of communications and media relations professionals within intercollegiate athletics has changed. The profession, often referred to as sports information, is making an effort to redefine its role within the athletics industry and be viewed more as a strategist than a practitioner. In order to advance the profession and each professional, research must be carried out to give individuals the tools to better support their institution's communications goals in a strategic manner, while also building the base of data-driven methods and best practices. PURPOSE: This study aims to define behavioral traits and methods of a high-quality sports …

Factors Contributing To The Elimination Of Ncaa Division I Intercollegiate Wrestling Programs, Jason Robert Fair Dec 2017

Factors Contributing To The Elimination Of Ncaa Division I Intercollegiate Wrestling Programs, Jason Robert Fair

All Dissertations

NCAA Division I intercollegiate wrestling has lost more athletic teams to elimination since the early 1980's than any other intercollegiate sport (Irick, 2016). Research exploring reasons behind intercollegiate wrestling program elimination is scant and much of what does exist is part of a broader discussion regarding Title IX regulation. This study sought to understand factors that exclusively contributed to the elimination of NCAA Division I intercollegiate wrestling programs. As a qualitative study, an interpretive framework with phenomenological methods were used to research this topic. A total of nine participants, three NCAA Division I head wrestling coaches, three NCAA Division I …

Parent-Child Communication In Sport: Bridging The Gap Between Theory And Research, Marshall Xavier Grimm, Elizabeth Dorrance Hall, Charles Ryan Dunn, Travis E. Dorsch

Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications

Parent-child communication is integral to the acquisition of positive developmental outcomes from sport. This position paper offers useful interdisciplinary frameworks and theories for future researchers as they investigate questions pertaining to parentchild communication in organized youth sport. We propose such work is enhanced when grounded in family, human development, and interpersonal communication theory and literature. Specifically, theoretical frameworks from these areas assist researchers in determining salient research questions, choosing appropriate methodologies, and most importantly in the interpretation of findings. As researchers attempt to further understand parental influence in sport, the role of specific family processes like communication will shed light …
