Sound And Silence In The Forge: Work, Space, And Communication In Early Cistercian Monasticism, Jacob Bradley Roosa

This research considers the place of artisans and manual labor, specifically blacksmiths and metalworking, within Cistercian monasticism in 12th and 13th century Europe. Stressing the dual importance of daily prayer and manual labor in strict silence, the Cistercian order of monks sought to reform traditional monastic practices they saw as excessive and far removed from their guiding set of regulations, the Rule of St. Benedict. Their growing numbers in the 12th century led them to establish a second class of monks, known as lay brothers, who provided the majority of each monasteries’ manual labor and who were largely prevented from …

This thesis analyzes the Life of Christina of Markyate to illustrate how the pages of Christina's manuscript contain keys to a better understanding of issues of sex, gender, and religion in the Middle Ages, especially in regards of how space, enclosure, and spiritual guidance were used by medieval religious people to further their devotional practices. By explicating the nature of Christina's enclosure experiences, we see how her life serves as an example of the importance of spiritual guidance in medieval lives. This thesis will investigate and examine how August Wilson incorporated African storytelling ceremonials inside of Gem of the Ocean and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. By studying the mannerisms and characteristics of Aunt Ester (Gem of the Ocean) and Bynum Walker (Joe Turner’s Come and Gone), this paper will help educators to understand that Wilson created these characters to preserve African griots inside his Pittsburgh Cycle.
