Black Lives Matter: Imagining And Realizing An Equitable Black Future, Ravi K. Perry Jan 2017

Black Lives Matter: Imagining And Realizing An Equitable Black Future, Ravi K. Perry

Ethnic Studies Review

The idea for this special Ethnic Studies Review edition, Black Lives Matter: Imagining and Realizing an Equitable Black Future, germinated prior to the election of the 45th president of the United States. However, what this series of articles and commentaries contribute to the movement for Black lives is even more critically important.

Against Critical Race Theory, Paul C. Mocombe Jan 2017

Against Critical Race Theory, Paul C. Mocombe

Ethnic Studies Review

Critical Race Theory (CRT) seeks to apply the negative dialectics of critical theory to the intersection of race, law, and power in the pursuit of racial and ethnic equality in Western society. That is to say, critical race theorists seek to convict Western society for not identifying with their values due to the prevalence of racial and ethnic oppression and subordination in the society. I argue here that this pursuit of racial emancipation and anti-subordination through the negative dialectics of critical theory by critical race theorists offers a false sense of racial difference which is convicting the values of the …

Being In One’S Place: Race, Ontology And The Killing Of Trayvon Martin, Ron Scapp Jan 2017

Being In One’S Place: Race, Ontology And The Killing Of Trayvon Martin, Ron Scapp

Ethnic Studies Review

The killing of Trayvon Martin along with the trial and acquittal of George Zimmerman provoked many discussions and debates: some touching upon painful issues, others just rather painful to listen to or read. What struck me most however were the conversations and opinions about what the killing, trial, and subsequent acquittal meant for our nation. What we came to learn is that the killing, trial and acquittal mean different things to different people. That fact should neither surprise us nor make us hesitant to examine, still further, the complex nature of the Trayvon Martin killing, its aftermath, and the history …

Black Lives Matter: Decrypting Encrypted Racism, Basil Ugorji Jan 2017

Black Lives Matter: Decrypting Encrypted Racism, Basil Ugorji

Ethnic Studies Review

The agitation of the Black Lives Matter movement has dominated the public discourse in the United States. Mobilized against the killing of unarmed black people, the movement and their sympathizers have made a series of demands for justice and dignity for the black people. However, many critics have raised concern over the legitimacy of the phrase, black lives matter since all lives irrespective of race, should matter. This article does not intend to pursue the ongoing debate over the semantic use of black lives or all lives. Instead, the paper seeks to study, through the lenses of the African American …

Hyphy Sparked A Social Movement, Andrea L.S. Moore Jan 2017

Hyphy Sparked A Social Movement, Andrea L.S. Moore

Ethnic Studies Review

“Hyphy,” a genre of rap and lifestyle associated with Bay Area hip hop evolved into a counter-cultural social movement for marginalized youth in early 2000. Hyphy originated from Black youth as a musical protest in response to their historical lack of social power, economic resources and systematic institutional oppression. Hyphy provided a space to release tension, celebrate life and freedom of expression, primarily as a means of resisting hegemonic perceptions of Black youth and their cultural productions. Applying a cultural studies theoretical approach, this ethnographic research examines literature and media coverage pre and post Hyphy highlighting the ways in which …

The Color Of Mass Incarceration, Ronnie B. Tucker Sr. Jan 2017

The Color Of Mass Incarceration, Ronnie B. Tucker Sr.

Ethnic Studies Review

This article looks at the issue of incarceration with a focus on the number of African Americans both male and female who are now incarcerated in the United States. The article takes an analytical perspective in reviewing the fact that the majority of African Americans in the prison population are not there for violent crimes, but yet, African Americans contribute to the mass color of incarceration. The article also includes discussion on how the “so-called’ justice systems has treated African Americans unfairly when charged with the same criminal offenses as those of the majority population. The paper also addresses the …

The Birth Of A Cinematic Storyline Normalizing Violence Against Black Lives, James Curiel Jan 2017

The Birth Of A Cinematic Storyline Normalizing Violence Against Black Lives, James Curiel

Ethnic Studies Review

The first Hollywood blockbuster, The Birth of a Nation, did more than establish cinematic conventions of camera techniques and movie distribution, for it also established a conventional storyline whereby white, patriarchal power is re-established through violence led by a white savior. This storyline can be traced throughout the history of major blockbusters such as Gone with the Wind of 1939, the cavalry trilogy by John Ford in the 1940s, The Omega Man from 1971, and The Outlaw Josie Wales from 1976. A quandary thus arises as to why The Birth of a Nation is held in such infamy and disdain …

The Black Lives Matter Movement And Why The Response Of All Lives Matter Is Misleading, Scott Loken Jan 2017

The Black Lives Matter Movement And Why The Response Of All Lives Matter Is Misleading, Scott Loken

Ethnic Studies Review

This paper discusses the Black Lives Matter movement, it’s brief history and relevance, and the problem with the response of All Lives Matter and how it is misleading. It discusses incidents leading up to the initial Social Media hashtag and how the statement took off as a rallying cry in response to any incident which seemed to be racially motivated, especially in situations where police officers were involved resulting in the death of African American citizens. This article examines how the organization was first developed in response to the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman and his acquittal of …

The Narrative Of The Outsider: Marginalization In The Works Of María Luisa Bemberg, Lucrecia Martel, And Lucía Puenzo, Natalie Nagl Jan 2017

The Narrative Of The Outsider: Marginalization In The Works Of María Luisa Bemberg, Lucrecia Martel, And Lucía Puenzo, Natalie Nagl

Wayne State University Dissertations

Through film and literature, my dissertation explores the representation of race, social class, and gender in the works of three Argentine directors. These social constructs have become so ingrained in interpersonal relations that there is rigidity in how they are considered. Therefore, those individuals who do not think and interact appropriately with the constructs occupy the outside. The possibility of marginalization adds another layer to the constructs by sensitizing them to the point that they affect the individual and their relationships (i.e. psychologically and socially). However, several representations, such as those that make up our corpus, challenge the definitions of …

A Study Of Human-Machine Interface (Hmi) Learnability For Unmanned Aircraft Systems Command And Control, Tom Haritos Jan 2017

A Study Of Human-Machine Interface (Hmi) Learnability For Unmanned Aircraft Systems Command And Control, Tom Haritos

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The operation of sophisticated unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) involves complex interactions between human and machine. Unlike other areas of aviation where technological advancement has flourished to accommodate the modernization of the National Airspace System (NAS), the scientific paradigm of UAS and UAS user interface design has received little research attention and minimal effort has been made to aggregate accurate data to assess the effectiveness of current UAS human-machine interface (HMI) representations for command and control. UAS HMI usability is a primary human factors concern as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) moves forward with the full-scale integration of UAS in the …

Satirical Perspectives: A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Mariah Johnson Jan 2017

Satirical Perspectives: A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Mariah Johnson

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

This paper proposes a cross-cultural examination of the societal satire of the countries of America and Soviet Russia by way of comparison of two satiric novels. Sinclair Lewis’s Babbitt satirizes the business values of capitalist America and the materialism perceived in an economic system based on the mass production and mass consumption of goods. Yurii Olesha’s Envy uses Babbitt in intertextual conversation to perform a similar critique of the Soviet Russian society and values of the same time period. Satiric theory provides a framework for understanding and relaying how each novel performs its parody of the respective society, while historical …

Civil Rights/Anti-Discrimination—I Didn’T Volunteer For This: A Solution For Protecting Volunteers From Discrimination In Massachusetts, Joseph D. Greenhalgh Jan 2017

Civil Rights/Anti-Discrimination—I Didn’T Volunteer For This: A Solution For Protecting Volunteers From Discrimination In Massachusetts, Joseph D. Greenhalgh

Western New England Law Review

Many have volunteered in some way or another. Volunteers seek to help others and to improve themselves. Unfortunately, if volunteers are discriminated against due to membership in a protected class, whether actual or perceived, they have very limited protections afforded to them.

Few jurisdictions have examined what, if any, protections against discrimination should be available to volunteers. Federal circuit courts are conflicted regarding the circumstances under which volunteers should be protected pursuant to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. A small number of states have examined whether volunteers should be protected under state public accommodation anti-discrimination statutes, …

The Free Exercise Of Religious Identity, Lauren Sudeall Lucas Jan 2017

The Free Exercise Of Religious Identity, Lauren Sudeall Lucas

Faculty Publications By Year

In recent years, a particular strain of argument has arisen in response to decisions by courts or the government to extend certain rights to others. Grounded in religious freedom, these arguments suggest that individuals have a right to operate businesses or conduct their professional roles in a manner that conforms to their religious identity. For example, as courts and legislatures have extended the right to marry to same-sex couples, court clerks have refused to issue marriage certificates to such couples, claiming that to do so would violate their religious beliefs. Similarly, corporations have refused, for reasons grounded in religious identity, …

Moving Negotiation Theory From The Tower Of Babel Toward A World Of Mutual Understanding, John Lande Jan 2017

Moving Negotiation Theory From The Tower Of Babel Toward A World Of Mutual Understanding, John Lande

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This Article synthesizes insights from the contributors to our symposium. Illustrating the Tower of Babel-like confusion, Part II highlights challenges in even defining the nature and scope of negotiation, as well as with the widely (mis)used concepts of integrative and distributive negotiation. Part III summarizes the nature of theories and potential sources of information that might contribute to negotiation theory. Part IV identifies some fundamental challenges in developing and improving negotiation theory, including systematically flawed thinking as well as the failure to incorporate insights about fundamental changes in people and our interactions. Part V describes some negotiation frameworks growing out …

A startup's path to self-sustaining profitability is risky and hard, and most do not make it. Venture capital (VC) investors try to improve these odds with contractual terms that focus and sharpen employees' incentives to pursue gold. If the employees and investors expect the startup to balance the goal of profitability with another goal - the goal of good - the risks are likely to both grow and multiply. They grow to the extent that profits are threatened, and they multiply to the extent that balancing competing goals adds a dimension to the incentive problem. In this Article, we explore …

An Assessment Of Paulo Freire's Pedagogy Of Hope In U.S. Urban Schools, Julia D. Jackson Jan 2017

An Assessment Of Paulo Freire's Pedagogy Of Hope In U.S. Urban Schools, Julia D. Jackson

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Inner- city schools are confronted with a number of challenges that are unique to their urbanized setting. To help identify opportunities for improvement in these schools, this study sought: 1) to determine whether Freire’s Pedagogy of Hope theoretically responds to what is known of the phenomenon of hopelessness in inner-city US schools and 2) to produce a systematic evaluation of that model, by examining published critiques of Freire’s work, as well as responses to these critiques, both theoretical and empirical. This determination is an important contribution to the field of critical pedagogy and serves educators seeking guidance on which aspects …

Parental Perceptions Of Effective Educators For Emotionally Impaired Students, Helane Marie Folske-Starlin Jan 2017

Parental Perceptions Of Effective Educators For Emotionally Impaired Students, Helane Marie Folske-Starlin

Wayne State University Dissertations

The voices of families with children identified as EBD needed to be heard. This dissertation study allowed those families to express their joys, needs and concerns. Included with the voices of families are the voices of educators that are teaching a struggling population of children and usually in an inclusive classroom.

This dissertation study was qualitatively driven and employed an ethnographic process with a case study format. Data was viewed in a naturalistic style to preserve the voices of the subjects.

Conclusions supported from the study were the need for more effective communication training provided educators and administrators. Educators need …

A Swot Analysis Of Community Policing As A Reform Schema For The Egyptian National Police To Counter Violent Extremism, Daniel Waddington Waddington

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Like much of the Middle East and Africa, Egypt has been experiencing increasing incidents of extremist violence and terrorism in recent years. However, an effective methodology for addressing this violence has not been identified. One approach that has been promoted internationally is countering violent extremism through community policing.
