The Goose
This paper argues that exposures through literature to human fragility and vulnerability, which are default modes of life within the relational collective on-page, rehearse critical engagements for life off-page during a time of climate change.

Assessing Universalism And The Rhetoric Of Development Assistance In Human Rights Research: Canadian-Ghanaian Human Rights Engagements, Sylvia Bawa
The Transnational Human Rights Review
This article is a contribution to the question of how Canada engages human rights in Ghana and Anglophone sub-Saharan Africa in general. In order to critically assess human rights engagement between Ghana and Canada, I situate the discussion within the broader global human rights milieu to deconstruct the myriad ways in which power dynamics in the global arena shape human rights practice and discourse. Using the rights concerns of women and minorities in Ghana as an entry point, I discuss the interconnected nature of first- and second-generation rights and cultural relativism in universal rights discourses. This discussion aims to propose …

Canada-Ghana Engagements In The Mining Sector: Protecting Human Rights Or Business As Usual?, Cynthia Kwakyewah, Uwafiokun Idemudia
The Transnational Human Rights Review
While states have traditionally had the responsibility to protect human rights, multinational corporations (MNCs) are now increasingly expected to also respect human rights in their pursuit of profitability. However, the increased incidence of human rights violations associated with the activities of MNCs in developing countries has led to various efforts to promote the corporate duty to respect human rights. This article seeks to examine the extent to which Canada’s national Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy can contribute to the prevention or amelioration of incidences of human rights violation associated with the activities of Canadian mining companies operating in Ghana. The …

Interpreting The Indonesian Constitutional Court Approach In Conducting Judicial Review On Cases Related To Economic And Social Rights, Andy Omara
Indonesia Law Review
One of the duties of the Indonesian Constitutional Court (Mahkamah Konstitusi - MK) is to determine whether legislation is consistent with the Constitution. If the MK determines that a statute is inconsistent with the Constitution, it declares that such statute is invalid. In such instance, the MK has the final word to determine the validity of legislation. In the view of some scholars, this feature reflects that the MK adopts strong form of judicial review. While this assertion holds true in some cases, it does not necessarily reflect the complete feature of the MK’s approach in deciding cases. In some …

Problems Of Conducting Equal Education Rights For Non-Formal Education: Challenges For Batam Local Government, Win Sherly Tan
Problems Of Conducting Equal Education Rights For Non-Formal Education: Challenges For Batam Local Government, Win Sherly Tan
Indonesia Law Review
In order to fulfill the right to education as mandated by the 1945 Constitution, non-formal education has been introduced in Indonesian society. Non-formal education is provided for in Article 26 paragraphs 1-7 of Law No. 20 of 2003 on the National Education System. Since this provision has been mandated by the Law, the question arises as to whether the Government of Batam City has efficiently implemented the right to education for all. Another question is whether the system for implementing equal education through Community Learning Centers and Homeschooling in Batam City aimed at assisting the Batam City Government is the …

The Play’S The Thing: Experimentally Examining The Social And Cognitive Effects Of School Field Trips To Live Theater Performances, Jay P. Greene, Heidi Holmes Erickson, Angela R. Watson, Molly I. Beck
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
Field trips to see theater performances are a long-standing educational practice, however, there is little systematic evidence demonstrating educational benefits. This article describes the results of five random assignment experiments spanning two years where school groups were assigned by lottery to attend a live theater performance, or for some groups, watch a movie-version of the same story. We find significant educational benefits from seeing live theater, including higher levels of tolerance, social perspective taking, and stronger command of the plot and vocabulary of those plays. Students randomly assigned to watch a movie did not experience these benefits. Our findings also …

Variables Associated with Divorce in Northwest Georgia, 2007-2016
Abstract
In this paper, there is an investigation of the main variables associated with divorce in Northwest Georgia, from data collected through 191 interviews, in 2007-2016. The data showed that sixteen such variables were identified by divorced interviewees. The study showed that marriage dissatisfaction and lack of readiness for marriage are the main factors, which explain divorce. The most frequently-mentioned variables were those related to infidelity, communication, abuse, financial problems, and conflict resolution.

Grounding International Service-Learning In Sociology: Homelessness In Russia, Thomas R. Hochschild Jr., Irina Mcclellan
Grounding International Service-Learning In Sociology: Homelessness In Russia, Thomas R. Hochschild Jr., Irina Mcclellan
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
The authors lead U.S. students on a study abroad trip to St. Petersburg, Russia. We designed a sociology service-learning course titled Urban Social Problems in the U.S. and Russia. Our primary substantive topic was homelessness, and social issues related to homelessness. We utilized ethnographic studies of homelessness, statistical data, sociological theories and concepts, class discussions, videos clips, guest speakers, personal journal reflections, and community service to create a dynamic learning experience. Based on a pre-test/post-test assessment, post-test follow-up questions, journal reflections, class discussions, and a final exam we argue that international service-learning is optimized when grounded in sociology.

Terrorism And General Aviation, Bryan Labrecque, Rodger A. Bates 3336763
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Terrorism is an increasingly significant threat to society. It has evolved as technology has become a significant force multiplier in terms of its impact on society. Almost since the dawn of aviation, the potential threat to and from aviation has increased as it has become an intrinsic element within the transportation system of our nation. Since the middle of the 20th century, commercial aviation has been the primary arena of transportation terrorism. However, with the increased attention and development of effective counterterrorism capabilities, terrorists are seeking alternative targets. America’s General Aviation community is a system at risk. From a …

Carefree, Connected, And Driving: A Study Of Social-Structural Factors Contributing To Texting While Driving Among Teenagers, Steven J. Seiler, Randall Kirby
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Introduction: As mobile phones become increasingly integrated into every aspect of public social life, structural contradictions between the norms of mobile use and norms within public social environments become increasingly apparent. Driving is a social environment in which these contradictions are both apparent and extremely dangerous. The purpose of this study is to examine uniquely social factors that influence the likelihood of texting while driving among new, teenage drivers, which is a generation socialized into mobile phone use from a very young age. Methods: Using data from the 2009 Parent-Teen Cell Phone Survey, collected by the Pew Research Center, multivariate …

Terrorism: Motivation And Theory, Wayne Korbl
Terrorism: Motivation And Theory, Wayne Korbl
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Abstract
This paper attempts to determine motivations behind terrorism from the perspectives of Rational Choice Theory and Social Solidarity Theory. Understanding motivation for terrorist acts cannot be determined uni-dimensionally and different levels of terrorist organizations are best understood using different theories – with individual suicide bombers’ motivations best explained by Social Solidarity Theory and sponsoring organizations’ motives best explained by Rational Choice Theory.

Review Of Honneths' Idea Of Socialism (2017), Michael Buhl
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Was the left doomed from the start? This is the central question addressed by Axel Honneth in The Idea of Socialism (2017). Honneth was a student of Habermas and a third generation Frankfurt school theorist who continues to act as director of the famous Institute for Social research in Frankfurt, Germany. He is currently also Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University. The book I review here was his latest. Although the bulk of the material in this book comes directly from translated lectures Honneth gave in Germany which sometimes may pose challenges for lay-readers, the accompanied detailed reference notes and …
Beyond Jurisprudence, Alan Calnan
Beyond Jurisprudence, Alan Calnan
Saint Louis University Law Journal
This article takes a new approach to legal theory. Because it views law as part of a complex natural system, it uses complex systems theory as its central investigative framework. Unlike traditional jurisprudence, which separates human artifacts from nature, complexity theory shows that human and natural systems are interdependent. Such systems cannot be studied in isolation, but require consilience. Consilience unites knowledge from the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities. By merging consilience with complexity theory, the article moves beyond jurisprudence toward “jurisilience.”
Jurisilience shows that law is a complex cultural system caused by complex social systems of …
