Exploring Vocation: Early Career Perspectives On Vocation In Action, Alisha Pomazon, Sarah Knudson
Exploring Vocation: Early Career Perspectives On Vocation In Action, Alisha Pomazon, Sarah Knudson
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
As tenure-track professors at a Catholic liberal arts college, we began our academic careers four years ago with a strong desire to excel in our research and teaching. Most importantly, however, we hoped to come to a deeper understanding of how we might imbue our work in a Christian higher education context with a strong sense of purpose and connection to our beliefs. This reflection details our experience of co-developing a sense of vocation and sacramentality in ourselves and our students during the busy pre-tenure years. We discuss how religious and scholarly texts, workshop and retreat experiences, and course design …
Voicing A New Life Narrative: Communicating The Dynamics Of Change In A Welfare-Dependent Family, Kylie Stevenson, Lelia Green
Voicing A New Life Narrative: Communicating The Dynamics Of Change In A Welfare-Dependent Family, Kylie Stevenson, Lelia Green
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The Hand Up Linkage project focuses on the family as a communication context through which to explore the dynamics of intergenerational welfare dependency. It is concerned with how persistent barriers to escaping welfare dependency are perceived and how attitudes to change are constructed through communication within the family. Interviews are conducted with families reliant on welfare support with the view of identifying ‘emotionally compelling experiences and realizations’ (King et al., 2003, p.184) through which families construct meaning about their place in the world. These interviews give voice to people experiencing the challenges and consolations of reliance on welfare, encouraging them …

The Relationship Of Social Constructs To Intimate Partner Violence, Andi Hefton
The Relationship Of Social Constructs To Intimate Partner Violence, Andi Hefton
All Master's Theses
Correlations between intimate partner violence and specific social influences such as religiosity, propensity towards forgiveness, and gender role identity were examined. A sample of 105 students enrolled at Central Washington University submitted responses based on their perceptions of gender roles, religiosity, forgiveness, and experience with partner violence. Although previous studies examined exposure to intimate partner violence, substance use in relation to perpetrating partner violence, and attitudes about perpetrating intimate partner violence (IPV), research to date has failed to examine IPV as it relates to gender roles, religion, and forgiveness. In an attempt to fill this gap, the current study examined …

Factors Affecting Hospice Social Work Utilization Among Hospice Patients: Focusing On Place Of Care And Economic Status, Mayumi Kimura
Master's Theses and Capstones
Objective. Hospice social workers empower their patients and families as they journey through end of life. However, even when social work services are available, some hospice families choose not to use or fully utilize this service. Guided by the Anderson behavioral model, this study examined factors affecting utilization of hospice social work services with particular focus on two enabling factors - place of care and economic status.
Method. Data came from the 2007 National Home and Hospice Care Survey. The sample was restricted to Medicare Hospice Benefit enrollees 65 years of age and older. Hospice social work utilization was categorized …

Race And Income Disparities In Disaster Preparedness In Old Age, Katherine M. Cox
Master's Theses and Capstones
Objective: Older adults are one of the most vulnerable populations impacted by disasters and communities continue to struggle addressing preparedness. This study investigated to what extent income status and race/ethnicity in old age interplayed with disaster preparedness.
Methods: Data came from the 2010 Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative panel survey of older Americans over 51 years old. Our sample was restricted to respondents who participated in a special survey about disaster preparedness (N=1,705). Disaster preparedness was measured as a score, which includes 13 variables related to personal, household, program, and medical preparedness. Race/ethnicity was categorized by White, Black, …

Including Transition-Age Youth Using Evidence-Based Mental Health Treatments, Peter Szto, Susan Reay, Sarah Preston, Claire Rynearson
Social Work Faculty Publications
The inclusion of transition-age young people into community, work and cultural activities is a challenge when young people struggle with mental health issues. Young people who experience depression, anxiety, eating disorders and other issues are at risk for marginalisation and inadequate services, particularly in rural areas. The best response to these young people is to provide access to high quality, evidence-based mental health treatment, regardless of location. Project NETWORK is a $1.3 million three-year federal initiative - awarded to the Grace Abbott School of Social Work, University of Nebraska Omaha - to address these disparities. The award grants graduate social …
Transgressing Gender Norms In Addiction Treatment: Transgender Rights To Access Within Gender Segregated Facilities., Sara Matsuzaka
Transgressing Gender Norms In Addiction Treatment: Transgender Rights To Access Within Gender Segregated Facilities., Sara Matsuzaka
Department of Social Work and Child Advocacy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Despite having disproportionately high rates of substance use disorder and co-occurring health and mental health issues compared to the general population, transgender individuals experience significant barriers to accessing and engaging in addiction treatment programs. Inpatient addiction treatment centers were originally designed to treat substance-dependent heterosexual cisgender populations and, as such, feature gender-segregated housing, bathrooms, and treatment sessions. The heteronormative structural and programmatic barriers, combined with exposures to stigmatic and prejudicial attitudes, may dissuade transgender populations from benefiting from the addiction treatment they so direly need. The purpose of this article is to examine the current policy debate surrounding the rights …
Beyond The Rct: Integrating Rigor And Relevance To Evaluate The Outcomes Of Domestic Violence Programs, Deborah Epstein, Lisa A. Goodman, Cris M. Sullivan
Beyond The Rct: Integrating Rigor And Relevance To Evaluate The Outcomes Of Domestic Violence Programs, Deborah Epstein, Lisa A. Goodman, Cris M. Sullivan
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Programs for domestic violence (DV) victims and their families have grown exponentially over the last four decades. The evidence demonstrating the extent of their effectiveness, however, often has been criticized as stemming from studies lacking scientific rigor. A core reason for this critique is the widespread belief that credible evidence can derive only from research grounded in randomized control trials (RCTs). Although the RCT method has its strengths, we argue that it is rarely an optimal—or even a possible—approach for evaluating multifaceted DV programs. This article reviews the reasons that RCT is a poor fit for such programs and argues …
"Translating The Language Of The Body" : Engaging Individuals Who Self-Harm In Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Dani Kowalski
"Translating The Language Of The Body" : Engaging Individuals Who Self-Harm In Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Dani Kowalski
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this exploratory study was to gain a deeper understanding of how individuals who self-harm develop ways of communicating about self-harming experiences in therapy. The study used semi-structured interviews with twelve participants to gather qualitative data about their experiences, with a focus on identifying what aspects of therapy were helpful to them, and what was difficult about engaging in therapy.
Participants spoke about the therapeutic encounter as one among many socio-cultural contexts in which changes of self-injury occurred. Findings suggest that engaging individuals who self-harm in therapy involves an understanding of self-harm as a communication of distressing experiences, …
The Role Of Spirituality In The Reconstruction Of Identity In Older Women, Elin Hardenberg
The Role Of Spirituality In The Reconstruction Of Identity In Older Women, Elin Hardenberg
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study examines whether spirituality plays a role in how older women integrate changes in their identity as they age. The research questions guiding this study are: 1) how do women navigate changes in identity in older adulthood; and 2) what role does spirituality play in the reconstruction of a woman’s identity in older adulthood? Erikson’s stages of development are used as a framework for understanding where participants are in their developmental process. The study was conducted by interviewing six women between the ages of seventy and ninety who self-identified as having an opinion about their relationship to spirituality. It …
Understanding And Negotiating Access To Preventative Sexual Health Care Biotechnology In Online Communities : A Thematic Analysis Of The Facebook Group ""Prep Facts: Rethinking Hiv Prevention And Sex, Dorothy Manley
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This thesis seeks to understand how access is being negotiated between the U.S. health care system, resources, and institutions by locating conversations about access to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) within the lay led Facebook group PrEP Facts: Rethinking HIV Prevention and Sex. The study offers insight into the fault lines within the health care system and how men who have sex with men (MSM) are managing these fault lines, and providing mentoring and guidance to each other, when seeking access to preventive care. Narratives in the Facebook group illustrate who is accounted for and who falls between the gaps within …

Playing Together : A Clinician's Perspective On The Use And Value Of Play In Therapy With Couples, Teresa Musick
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine couples therapists perceptions of their use and value of play in the therapeutic encounter. Secondary to the main hypothesis, this thesis also solicited couples therapists to comment on their experience in couples therapy as a client and how this impacted their sense of relationship satisfaction. Forty-four couples’ therapists representing a variety of licensing credentials (psychologists, LPC’s, MSW/LMSW/LICSW, MFT’s) and time in practice completed a brief online questionnaire. The questionnaire asked participants to rate their use, value, and experience of play in the therapeutic encounter. Results indicate that clinicians who participated in this …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Vicarious Racism, Police Videos, And Their Impact On The Facebook Consumer, Daniel Segundo
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This quantitative exploratory study used conflictual police videos on Facebook as a marker for vicarious racial trauma on social media to investigate its correlation with trauma symptoms. The literature has yet to examine the impact of vicarious trauma experienced on social media. This study collected data from participants who completed an anonymous online questionnaire reflecting on previous experiences watching conflictual police videos. The findings suggest: a positive correlation between vicarious racial trauma experienced on Facebook with trauma symptoms; that police shooting videos had a stronger correlation to trauma symptoms compared to police arrest videos; and a moderate relationship between negative …

Parenting One's Birth Child After Adoption Plans Dissolve, Elise Trujillo
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
I come to this work as someone who as a potential birth mother withdrew from an open adoption plan after giving birth. During my training as a clinical social worker, I have found little literature and research which speaks to the aftermath of the adoption process on the prospective birth parent. For the purpose of this thesis, I am interested in exploring the lasting impacts on birth mothers of creating and withdrawing from an adoption plan after giving birth. I hope through this thesis I will be able explore resources available to potential birth mothers and parents who sever their …

African American high school students are underrepresented in study abroad programs, and their lack of intercultural skills and international understanding can impede their personal and professional development, and limit their career opportunities. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative case study was to explore the influence of intercultural experiences through study abroad and immersion programs on African American high school students' intercultural competence. The conceptual framework drew on 2 theories: Bennett's development model of intercultural sensitivity and Kolb's experiential learning. Data from interviews and focus groups with 13 African American high school students, 2 parents, and 2 teachers as well as …
Clinical Social Work With Underserved Persons In Colorado In An Integrated Healthcare Facility, Trisha Sue Goetz
Clinical Social Work With Underserved Persons In Colorado In An Integrated Healthcare Facility, Trisha Sue Goetz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is significant documentation showing that health disparities experienced by underserved persons can be mitigated through the provision of quality integrated healthcare. This research project was grounded in social support theory and how support influences improvements in physical, psychological, and overall health. Social workers in integrated healthcare are in a unique position to be the source of social support for individuals experiencing health disparities, yet there is little research concerning how these social workers are providing services and how they affect health outcomes. This research addressed gaps in the literature concerning social worker roles in order to improve integrated healthcare …
Development Of A Guideline For Hospice Staff, Patients, And Families On Appropriate Opioid Use, Trenika Alexander-Goreá
Development Of A Guideline For Hospice Staff, Patients, And Families On Appropriate Opioid Use, Trenika Alexander-Goreá
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is an identified problem with patients receiving suboptimal pain management at a hospice agency in the northwestern United States. At this agency, undertreatment of pain is prevalent. Evidence indicates that this may be a result of a lack of guidelines, education, and knowledge of appropriate prescribing. Known barriers to the correct prescription and administration of potent opioids in the hospice setting include prevailing beliefs, knowledge, skills, and attitudes, all of which can impact care negatively. Contextually, hospice principles mandate patient comfort and caregiver involvement in continuous quality improvement, which includes adequate and informed pain management. Moreover, hospice metrics demand …

Teacher Perceptions Of Head Start Preschool Programs In An Urban Public School, Salvador Perez
Teacher Perceptions Of Head Start Preschool Programs In An Urban Public School, Salvador Perez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An initiative to coordinate early learning programs across a major city in the Midwestern United States was undertaken in 2013. The opinions of teachers regarding effects on instruction and children were not included in the development and implementation of the program. This omission is important because multiple scholars have pointed to the benefits and need of including stakeholders' perspectives in program development. The purpose of this study was to explore preschool teachers' experiences and perspectives of this initiative using a qualitative bounded instrumental case study design. Fullan's theory of educational change served as the framework of this study. Nine preschool …

Understanding Barriers African American Teenage Mothers Face In Pursuit Of Higher Education, Aldison Middleton-Hinton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have found that social workers have difficulty identifying their roles in responding to the barriers African American teenage mothers face in pursuit of higher education. This action research project explored the roles social workers play in responding to the barriers African American teenage mothers face in pursuit of a college education and how social workers responded. The ecological systems theory was used to help understand this phenomenon. An action research methodology was used to collect data from 6 licensed social workers who worked with African American teenage mothers. Three focus groups were facilitated to explore the social work practice …
