Nature Of Formal Intimate Partner Violence Help Seeking: The Influence Of Individual And Community Characteristics, Desiree Ruth Wiesen-Martin
Nature Of Formal Intimate Partner Violence Help Seeking: The Influence Of Individual And Community Characteristics, Desiree Ruth Wiesen-Martin
Doctoral Dissertations
Intimate partner violence is a public health concern, and intimate partner violence victim help seeking is the focus of many intervention/prevention policies and programs. Help seeking by victims of intimate partner violence from formal support services, such as the police, domestic violence shelters, and/or rape crisis centers, is relatively low (Kaukinen 2002; Davies, Block, and Campbell 2007; Campbell 2008; Kaukinen, Meyer, and Akers 2013; Zaykowski 2014), and the research which considers the nature of help seeking among those victims who seek help is quite limited. This dissertation investigates the nature of formal help seeking among intimate partner violence victims who …
The Prisoner As One Of Us: Norwegian Wisdom For American Penal Practice, Emily Labutta
The Prisoner As One Of Us: Norwegian Wisdom For American Penal Practice, Emily Labutta
Emory International Law Review
The United States has some of the highest crime and recidivism rates in the world, while Norway has some of the lowest. This Comment explores the factors behind these rates, including each country's penal goals, structures, and laws. Major differentiating factors between the two systems include the sentencing structure of the U.S. and the Norwegian principle of normality. Under the principle of normality, Norway seeks to reintegrate its offenders into society. Norway combats the negative side effects of prison that isolate the prisoner from society, reinforce bad habits, and make reintegration upon release nearly impossible. This Comment proposes that the …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The highly rural region of Appalachia faces considerable socioeconomic disadvantage and health disparities that are recognized risk factors for intimate partner violence (IPV). The objective of this study was to estimate the rate of IPV-related hospitalizations in Appalachia and the non-Appalachian United States for 2007–2011 and compare hospitalizations in each region by clinical and sociodemographic factors. Data on IPV-related hospitalizations were extracted from the State Inpatient Databases, which are part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. Hospitalization day, year, in-hospital mortality, length of stay, average and total hospital charges, sex, age, payer, urban-rural location, income, diagnoses and procedures were …

Development Of A Sexual Assault Legal Education (Sale) Certification Program For Advanced Healthcare Providers Precepting Novice Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners In Arkansas, Heather Dawn Thompson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Caring for victims of sexual violence requires evidence based didactic education combined with clinical preceptorship by a qualified advanced practice provider. With less than twenty certified sexual assault nurse examiners in the state of Arkansas, it is imperative to increase access to qualified examiners. Despite available didactic courses, access to qualified clinical preceptors/mentors is an obstacle that has yet to be addressed. To assess the interest of advanced providers in completing a certification course in forensics that would qualify them as a preceptor for novice sexual assault nurse examiners, a pilot study was conducted. Majority of respondents (80%) were interested …

Emergency Department Use Among Asian Adults Living In The United States: Results From The National Health Interview Survey (2006 – 2013), Kathleen M. Sullivan, James Davis, Angela Sy
Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal
This paper presents secondary analyses of the National Health Interview Survey data focused on emergency department (ED) utilization among Asian adults residing in the United States. National Health Interview Survey data provided from survey years 2006-2013 was pooled and disaggregated by single-race Asian ethnic subgroups (Filipino, Chinese, Asian Indian, other Asian). We explored trends in reports of an ED visit over the survey years for the purpose of determining whether reports of an ED visit increased or decreased over survey years. We also explored background/biologic, environment, access to care, and behavior factors and their associations with having an ED visit. …

Cultural Distress: An Emerging Paradigm, Christine Dewilde, Candace W. Burton
Cultural Distress: An Emerging Paradigm, Christine Dewilde, Candace W. Burton
School of Nursing Publications
Although cultural competence in practice is a common goal within the health care professions, little is known about the consequences of a lack of such competence in health and healing. We propose a novel theoretical framework of cultural distress to describe patient experiences of and reactions to care that does not incorporate attention to cultural needs. Use of the cultural distress model to guide research offers an innovative framework by which researchers may identify potential interventions such that patients never reach a level of cultural distress.

Parental Factors Associated With The Request For Resuscitation For Infants Born At Periviability, Abiola Deborah Femi-Abodunde
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The purpose of this study is to determine factors associated with parental request for aggressive resuscitation for infants born at borderline viability, the period between 22 0/7 and 24 6/7 weeks of gestation. Between 2013 and 2016, 81 women were admitted to Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) for a potential delivery in this critical period. Eighty-four percent of patients elected aggressive resuscitation for their newborn and 16% chose comfort care only. Using bivariate analysis to evaluate statistical significance, 5 of 19 possible variables were included in our logistic regression model. This model demonstrated higher likelihood of a request for resuscitation …
Redressing The Adjunct Staffing Model In American Higher Education, Andrew C. Casto
Redressing The Adjunct Staffing Model In American Higher Education, Andrew C. Casto
Theses and Dissertations--English
Since their advent as supplemental staff at community colleges four decades ago, part-time instructors, or adjuncts, have since been employed with increasing frequency and in escalating numbers across all institutional types of American higher education. Currently comprising approximately forty percent of all postsecondary faculty, part-time instructors now outnumber full-time nontenure-track, tenure-track, and tenured faculty respectively on many campuses. This pervasive trend has created a professional climate of uncertainty and, in some cases, even hostility as American colleges and universities struggle to adapt to ever changing enrollment populations, market demands, technological innovations, and political pressure. As the sustainability of traditional faculty …
Active Bystander Behaviors Among High School Students: The Role Of Co-Occurrence Of Violence Victimization And Perpetration In Personal Violence Prevention, Reiko Ozaki
Theses and Dissertations--Social Work
Bystander programs aim to prevent personal violence, such as dating violence, sexual violence, sexual harassment, and stalking. They equip community members with skills to stop the violence before it happens by engaging in active bystander behaviors such as speaking up in potentially risky situations or supporting victims. Given that victimization and perpetration of personal violence, including co-occurrence, are common among youth, high schools have begun implementing bystander programs in recent years. This study examined the relationship between high school students’ experience of personal violence and their active bystander behaviors.
Using the social identity approach as a theoretical foundation, this study …

The Effects Of Idea Part C Early Intervention Services On The Well-Being Of Children And Families In Child Welfare, Ching-Shu J. Fang
Theses and Dissertations--Social Work
There is ample evidence indicating that maltreatment has deleterious effects on the development of infants and toddlers. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act of 2003 requires referrals from child welfare (CW) to IDEA Part C Early Intervention services to provide developmental assessments and services for children younger than three with substantiated cases of child abuse or neglect. Thus, this study aims to examine the effects of Part C services on the well-being of young children and their families in CW.
This study used a secondary dataset, the National Survey of Children and Adolescent Well-Being II, to examine the research …
An Exploratory Study Of Incapacitated Persons With Criminal Behaviors Served By Kentucky’S Public Guardianship Program, Karen Martin
An Exploratory Study Of Incapacitated Persons With Criminal Behaviors Served By Kentucky’S Public Guardianship Program, Karen Martin
Theses and Dissertations--Social Work
State run public guardianship programs are legally mandated to provide custodial care for persons deemed incapacitated by the courts. Historically, the majority of state wards were elderly women residing in skilled nursing facilities. Today, those demographics are rapidly changing. This new incapacitated cohort has become less institutionalized, with a rising number of persons who have entered the program with criminal records and who continue to commit crimes. This exploratory study focuses on incapacitated persons (IP) with criminal behaviors in order to seek what intervention(s) might reduce their criminal activity. Relying on routine activity theory, differing levels of supervision were compared …
Service Before Self: The Health Consequences Of Working In Public Child Welfare, Austin Garrett Griffiths
Service Before Self: The Health Consequences Of Working In Public Child Welfare, Austin Garrett Griffiths
Theses and Dissertations--Social Work
Child welfare workers respond to human tragedy and the job stresses associated with their positions that may result in their own trauma, secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, emotional exhaustion, and burnout. Workers continue to leave their positions at alarming rates, influencing service quality and the ability to meet the needs of vulnerable populations. Decades of research have attempted to solve this national crisis by identifying salient factors found to influence the child welfare worker's experience and intention to leave their position. However, the problem prevails.
Addressing a major gap in the literature, this mixed methods study took a unique approach …
Workplace Bullying In Kuwait, Hamad A. Alaslawi
Workplace Bullying In Kuwait, Hamad A. Alaslawi
Theses and Dissertations--Social Work
Workplace bullying (WPB) is a pervasive problem in contemporary society, inflicting detrimental repercussions upon employees, employers, and organizations alike. It affects the physical, psychological, and financial wellbeing not only of its victims, but also their families, their communities, and society as a whole.
Research into this phenomenon has evolved significantly over the past two decades. While related to the physically violent phenomenon of schoolyard bullying, WPB is primarily a psychological phenomenon, manifesting as abusive power in workplace relationships, rather than as interpersonal conflict. Bullying at work comes in many forms, has many faces, and occurs in many places. It ranges …
The Impact Of Attitudes And Beliefs About Fat On Social Work Education In Appalachia: An Exploratory Study, Genesia Kilgore-Bowling
The Impact Of Attitudes And Beliefs About Fat On Social Work Education In Appalachia: An Exploratory Study, Genesia Kilgore-Bowling
Theses and Dissertations--Social Work
Anti-fat bias and the resulting discriminatory behavior is widely documented and impacts almost every aspect of an obese person’s life, including healthcare/insurance, education, employment, interpersonal relationships, and protection under the law. This has serious psychological, social, physical health, and economic consequences for the obese person. The non-social work related literature provides an abundance of evidence that when obese people seek assistance from a helping professional, they are met with the same anti-fat bias and discrimination present in other areas of their lives.
Recognizing that anti-fat bias can lead to negative practice behaviors with obese patients and clients, many professional education …

Human Services Students Preferences For Master's Level Training, Tammi F. Dice, Mark C. Rehfuss
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
Human Services students close to graduation are seeking employment in the field, but many are also considering their future career paths and the training needed to reach their long-term career goals. Knowing if bachelor's level students desire graduate degrees, which focus they prefer, and how they would like to pursue the degrees may contribute to the decision-making of educators, employers, and students. This exploratory study, therefore, examined human services students' preferences for master's level training. Students' responses reflected preferences for several types of master's programs, direct acceptance, and online delivery. These themes and their implications for educators, employers, and students …

Human Service Students' And Professionals' Knowledge And Experiences Of Interprofessionalism: Implications For Education, Kaprea F. Johnson, Narketta Sparkman-Key, Michael T. Kalkbrenner
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
Interprofessionalism is an approach to delivering optimal client care in which providers from multiple professions work collaboratively on care teams. Human Service Professionals (HSPs) are generalists who frequently work together with professionals in related fields. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which HSPs and helping professionals in related fields have engaged in interprofessional experiences. Researchers also investigated the impact that having previous interprofessional experiences had on participants' perceptions of interprofessionalism. Results revealed that professionals and students who had previous interprofessional experiences were significantly more likely to have positive perceptions about interprofessional cooperation. However, results also …

Professional Standards: Embracing Preventive Ethics In Human Services, Chaniece Winfield, Narketta Sparkman-Key, Anthony Vajda
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
Recent updates to the National Organization for Human Services Code of Ethics create an opportunity for further recognition within the field. The next logical step to recognition is the adoption of the concept of preventive ethics, in which ethical codes set the tone for the development of grievance procedures and agency level policies. Fostering an environment of preventive ethics within the human services profession will further establish awareness and recognition within the field. This discussion provides support for the development of a grievance process through the conceptual lens of preventive ethics and suggests a framework for the development of a …
