What Are The Most Commonly Used Tools To Screen Depression In Hiv-Infected Gay And Bisexual Men?, Michael Isner Jan 2017

What Are The Most Commonly Used Tools To Screen Depression In Hiv-Infected Gay And Bisexual Men?, Michael Isner

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Gay and bisexual men infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) comprise a sizable, medically vulnerable population. Depression is the most commonly experienced mental health disorder affecting this group of people, lending itself to a host of risks associated with depression. As screening of depression in this population can be challenging, it is vital that clinicians have the best available tools and guidelines to detect depressive symptomology. This focused, comprehensive review of the literature examined current data describing the clinical instruments used to detect depressive symptoms in HIV-infected gay and bisexual men. The aim of this analysis was to seek out …

Iganga’S Women: How Iganga’S Culture Influences Women’S Opportunities, Genevieve Chan Jan 2017

Iganga’S Women: How Iganga’S Culture Influences Women’S Opportunities, Genevieve Chan

MA IDS Thesis Projects

A common effort to combat gender inequality is to create more access for women in employment, education, and skill development opportunities. Research has found that women continue to face difficulties to engage in such opportunities despite the policies and reforms that appear to have increased access. The structural changes have made little effect on changing the cultural factors that prevent women from effectively engaging in opportunities and thus, gain empowerment. This study seeks to explore the culture of Iganga, Uganda and how it influences women’s opportunities. The research project investigated Iganga’s cultural factors in which nine participants described how the …

Gender Differences And The Effect Of Financial Parenting On Financial Self-Efficacy, R. Lea Hollowell Jan 2017

Gender Differences And The Effect Of Financial Parenting On Financial Self-Efficacy, R. Lea Hollowell

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much research has been completed regarding the need for financial literacy over the past two decades. Teaching financial knowledge alone is not enough to improve financial outcomes due to the psychological factors that may result in bad financial decisions despite individuals being aware of financial best practices. Financial self-efficacy, the belief that one is capable of making good financial decisions without being overwhelmed, has been proposed as the conduit between financial knowledge and financial outcomes. Past research has found that males tend to outscore females in financial literacy assessments as well as a variety of types of self-efficacy; however, very …

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

This study sought to assess the attitudes of Mental Health Professionals (MHPs) towards tackling illicit drug use and drug-related disorders in Nigeria and to explore regional variations in attitude. Based on the validated Substance Abuse Attitude Survey (SAAS), a quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted in a randomized sample of 292 MHPs practicing in neuropsychiatric hospitals and mental health departments of teaching hospitals from four geopolitical zones of Nigeria. A response rate of 81.1% was achieved. MHPs tended towards non-permissive, moralistic and stereotypic spectrum and exhibited distinctly defined attitude towards their professional role. The Kruskal-Wallis analysis established significant regional variation in …

An Examination Of The Black Honors Student Experience At A Predominantly White Institution, Brandie Bentley Jan 2017

An Examination Of The Black Honors Student Experience At A Predominantly White Institution, Brandie Bentley

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Nationwide, there are a small percentage of Black students participating in Honors Programs at the undergraduate college level. Due to the limited representation of students of color within advanced academic programs such as honors programs, the unique stories and experiences of this particular population oftentimes goes overlooked. The goal of this qualitative study is to give Black Honors students a voice and highlight their narratives. Analyzing the benefits and challenges that students of color face within their overall experience in The Honors College at Eastern Michigan University, a Predominantly White Institution can assist in knowledge regarding this population. One focus …

Cripping East Los Angeles: Enabling Environmental Justice In Helena María Viramontes’S Their Dogs Came With Them, Jina B. Kim Jan 2017

Cripping East Los Angeles: Enabling Environmental Justice In Helena María Viramontes’S Their Dogs Came With Them, Jina B. Kim

English Language and Literature: Faculty Books

Chapter 18 of section three: Food Justice in Disability Studies and the Environmental Humanities: Toward an Eco-Crip Theory edited by Stacy Alaimo

Although scholars in the environmental humanities have been exploring the dichotomy between "wild" and "built" environments for several years, few have focused on the field of disability studies, a discipline that enlists the contingency between environments and bodies as a foundation of its scholarship. On the other hand, scholars in disability studies have demonstrated the ways in which the built environment privileges some bodies and minds over others, yet they have rarely examined the ways in which toxic …

Academic Librarians’ Attitudes About Civic-Mindedness And Service Learning, Maureen Barry, Laura A. Lowe, Sarah E. Twill Jan 2017

Academic Librarians’ Attitudes About Civic-Mindedness And Service Learning, Maureen Barry, Laura A. Lowe, Sarah E. Twill

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Although discourse on the civic engagement of libraries as institutions is plentiful, there has been little discussion of librarians as individuals. Librarianship is more than being a trustee of information. It includes responsibility for the common good. Libraries provide tools for education on social and political issues, but they can also collaborate in activities that improve well-being in their communities. Participating in service learning is one way that librarians on academic campuses can get involved. This study used a standardized scale to measure civic-mindedness among academic librarians and examine characteristics and activities, including service learning, related to variation in its …

Impact Of Child Sexual Abuse On Non-Abused Siblings: A Review With Implications For Research And Practice, Alayna Schreier, Jessica K. Pogue, David J. Hansen Jan 2017

Impact Of Child Sexual Abuse On Non-Abused Siblings: A Review With Implications For Research And Practice, Alayna Schreier, Jessica K. Pogue, David J. Hansen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Research has widely supported the numerous negative outcomes for victims of child sexual abuse (CSA), but little attention has been paid to the experiences of non-abused, non-offending siblings following the victim's disclosure. This review presents evidence indicating that this overlooked sibling population merits both clinical and research attention. Siblings may experience significant emotional and behavioral responses to the victim's disclosure due to changes within the family system. A sibling's internalizing and externalizing behaviors can increase family distress post-abuse, while a supportive sibling can contribute to the victim's recovery. The current state of clinical services for siblings is described. Services including …

Engineering Inpatient Discharges: Disposition Prediction And Day-Of-Discharge Planning, Nicholas A. Ballester Jan 2017

Engineering Inpatient Discharges: Disposition Prediction And Day-Of-Discharge Planning, Nicholas A. Ballester

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Inpatient discharge planning is a critical decision point in patient care, with implications for the efficiency of the inpatient unit as well as other units of the acute care hospital. Inefficient discharge planning can cause patient boarding (waiting for beds) in the upstream units. While this is a poignant and well-known problem in healthcare, very little quantitative research exists that proposes approaches to alleviate it. To address this issue, we apply Systems Engineering methods with focus on three key challenges in inpatient discharge planning. First, to aid inpatient care providers in predicting discharge disposition (home vs. non-home) within 24-hours of …

Youth Participatory Action Research (Ypar) And Critical Epistemologies: Rethinking Educational Research, Limarys Caraballo, Brian D. Lozenski, Jamila J. Lyiscott, Ernest Morrell Jan 2017

Youth Participatory Action Research (Ypar) And Critical Epistemologies: Rethinking Educational Research, Limarys Caraballo, Brian D. Lozenski, Jamila J. Lyiscott, Ernest Morrell

Publications and Research

Knowledges from academic and professional research-based institutions have long been valued over the organic intellectualism of those who are most affected by educational and social inequities. Participatory research recognizes what Antonio Gramsci described as “the intellectual and political power of ‘organic intellectuals’ from whom counter-hegemonic notions derive,” which presents a “fundamental challenge to what ... John Gaventa called ‘official knowledge’ as the sole legitimate claim to truth” (Fine et al., 2004, p. 4). Unlike positivist and postpositivist epistemological traditions and research methods that rely on the objectivity and expertise of university-sanctioned researchers (Isenhart & Jurow, 2011; Noffke, 1997), participatory action …

Faculty Perceptions Of Online Teaching Effectiveness And Indicators Of Quality, Christine Frazer, Debra Sullivan, Deborah Weatherspoon, Leslie Hussey Jan 2017

Faculty Perceptions Of Online Teaching Effectiveness And Indicators Of Quality, Christine Frazer, Debra Sullivan, Deborah Weatherspoon, Leslie Hussey

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Online education programs in nursing are increasing rapidly. Faculty need to be competent in their role and possess the skills necessary to positively impact student outcomes. Existing research offers effective teaching strategies for online education; however, there may be some disconnect in the application of these strategies and faculty perceptions of associated outcomes. Focus groups were formed to uncover how nursing faculty in an online program define and describe teaching effectiveness and quality indicators in an asynchronous online environment. A semistructured interview format guided group discussion. Participants (n=11) included nurse educators from an online university with an average of 15 …

Implicit Bias In Child Welfare: Overcoming Intent, Rakesh Beniwal Jan 2017

Implicit Bias In Child Welfare: Overcoming Intent, Rakesh Beniwal

Connecticut Law Review

Albert Einstein said that "[we can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them. " In spite of the wisdom of this quote, the field of child protection attempts to do just that-often couching seemingly new initiatives within old business methods and ways of thinking. The result is a system that disparately impacts people of color at every stage of child protection intervention. To be sure, the system recognizes that these disproportionate numbers exist. But what child protection agencies fail to appreciate is the impact that implicit bias has upon these outcomes. The …

The Effect Of Clinician Competence And Religiosity On The Trainee Clinician’S Ability To Identify Problematic Sexual Behavior, Cody Butcher

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Models in psychology do not consider the concept of sex addiction the same way as other substance or behavior addictions. For example, sex addiction, which is not a DSM-5 disorder, is often assigned as a label to clients based off of high frequency of sexual behavior. Despite sex addiction not being a diagnosable disorder, sex addiction therapists are conducting treatment with people who identify as sex addicts. Due to this lack of a definition, previous research has found that clinicians may identify sex addiction in clients based on their own preconceived worldviews of what types of sexual behaviors or frequencies …
