Do The Lessons From Micro-Conflict Literature Transfer To High Crime Areas?: Examining Mexico’S War On Drugs, Muhammad Nasir, Marc Rockmore, Chih Ming Tan
Do The Lessons From Micro-Conflict Literature Transfer To High Crime Areas?: Examining Mexico’S War On Drugs, Muhammad Nasir, Marc Rockmore, Chih Ming Tan
Economics & Finance Faculty Publications
Exposure to political violence has been found to affect behavioural parameters. The effects of high levels of criminal violence, however, are largely unknown. We examine the effects of Mexico’s war on drugs on risk aversion, mental health and pro-social behaviour. Using a nonlinear difference-in-differences (DiD) model, we find that the post 2006 surge in violence significantly increased risk aversion and reduced trust in civic institutions without any simultaneous strengthening of kinship relationships. Although the deterioration of mental health due to violence exposure has been hypothesised to explain changes in risk aversion, we find no such effect.

School of Psychology
Aims and Objectives To identify the factors that influence decisions made by health professionals when assessing the pain of native English speaking and children whose English is an Additional Language (EAL). Background Pain assessment in children is often poorly executed following acute injury. Whilst a range of pain assessment tools have been developed, little guidance is provided for assessing pain in EAL. Design Factorial survey design. Methods Twenty Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) nurses and twenty children’s nursing students participated in an electronic survey to make judgments on 12 scenarios describing a child attending a MIU following an incident, accompanied by …

The Effects Of A Poverty Simulation On Immediate And Sustained Participant Empathy, Doris Mann
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Using the Attribution and the Experiential Learning Theory seated within Constructivism, this study examined the effect of the poverty simulation, Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS), on empathetic attitude toward those who experience poverty. 778 participants represented the fields of education, health care, and social work. Measures of immediate and sustained empathetic attitude were conducted using the Basic Empathy Scale (BES) (Jolliffe & Farrington, 2006). Findings indicate that there is immediate empathetic attitude change for the participants, but no sustained empathetic attitude change. Some of the variables considered included gender, race, age, income, voluntary/in-voluntary and others. This study supports the need …

Conquering Time And Space With Webinar Technology, Megan Webber, Melissa Hauge
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
NPD practitioners at a large academic medical center identified a gap in the attendance at their monthly Nursing Grand Rounds education. In attendance were those whose primary work location was the main hospital campus, with minimal participation from staff at other locations. NPD practitioners introduced a live webinar as an option for attending grand rounds for those working at off-site locations. Links to the live webinar were sent monthly to all RNs across the organization, and nursing leadership granted permission for nurses to participate in the webinar at work or from home. The addition of a webinar option has increased …

The Feasibility Of Adopting An Evidence-Informed Tailored Exercise Program Within Adult Day Services: The Enhance Mobility Program., Diane King, S.A. Faulkner, Bridget Hanson
Reports
This article uses the RE-AIM framework to evaluate the feasibility of implementing Enhance Mobility (EM), a tailored, evidence-informed group exercise and walking program for older adults with dementia, into an adult day services center. Participant physical performance outcomes were measured at baseline and 8 months. Program staff were interviewed to understand implementation challenges. Participant outcomes did not change significantly, though gait speed improved from limited to community ambulation levels. Implementation challenges included space reallocation and adequate staffing. Adopting EM in adult day services is feasible, and has potential to reach older adults who could benefit from tailored exercise.

Sex Trafficking: A Toolbox For Apn's, Nissa Berbawy
Graduate Research Projects
Abstract
Objective: As the fastest growing crime in the world (Walker-Rodriguez, & Hill, 2011) and with sex slaves found in all 50 states (Grace et al, 2014), finding a solution to the problem of sex slavery is critical. One study showed 63.3% of sex slave survivors were treated in the emergency department while enslaved, revealing an opportunity for healthcare providers to intervene (The Emergency Nurses Association, 2015). The purpose of this review of literature is to provide evidence based resources to better equip APN’s to identify, intervene, and refer sex slaves for successful rehabilitative services. Methods: Databases searched were …

Experiential Perspectives Of Teachers In An Inclusive Classroom, Evelyn Ifeoma Nwadinobi
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Inclusive educational settings have become the norm as schools aim to educate disabled students in environments least restrictive to their development (U.S. Department of Education, 2004). This study was conducted in order to assess teacher perceptions of inclusion academically, socially, and behaviorally for general and special education students. Informed by Sociocultural theory (Vygotsky, 1978), and Integrated Threat Theory (Bustillos & Silvan-Ferrero, 2013), this research aimed to give voice to those most instrumental in implementing inclusion successfully and effectively. Utilizing open-ended interviews and qualitative analyses coded by Excel and NVivo software, the study discovered that teacher participants perceived the main benefit …

Recovery From Borderline Personality Disorder Through Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Carla D. Chugani, Ashley R. Seiler, Tina R. Goldstein
The Qualitative Report
This article presents a qualitative investigation of the perspectives and experiences of recovery from borderline personality disorder from six individuals who were treated with comprehensive dialectical behavior therapy. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews, transcribed, and coded using a six-step analysis process. Six primary themes emerged: (1) belief about recovery, (2) current experience of self, (3) facets of recovery, (4) motivating factors, (5) external supports to recovery, and (6) characteristics required for recovery. Overall, the findings took a dialectical form in which participants often described conflicting experiences (e.g., feeling recovered while also continuing to experience heightened emotional sensitivity). We conclude …
My Dissertation Healed Me: A Retrospective Analysis Through Heuristic Inquiry, Smita Kumar
My Dissertation Healed Me: A Retrospective Analysis Through Heuristic Inquiry, Smita Kumar
The Qualitative Report
It was my personal experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) that motivated me to undertake my dissertation, but during the process I was haunted by my “IPV survivor” identity. Little did I know that my intellectual pursuit was an invitation into personal healing through heuristic inquiry. During the data collection phase of my dissertation, I unconsciously embarked on the initial engagement phase of heuristic inquiry, but only 2 years after completing my dissertation did I realize I experienced six phases of Moustakas’s (1990) heuristic inquiry. In this article, I share how my dissertation healed me through a retrospective analysis using …
