Intercepting The Intergenerational Trauma Of Mass Incarceration Through Art-Based Parent Programs, Ana Ruth Yela Castillo
Intercepting The Intergenerational Trauma Of Mass Incarceration Through Art-Based Parent Programs, Ana Ruth Yela Castillo
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This study discusses the intergenerational impact of mass incarceration on families. The general literature repeatedly described the negative effects of mass incarceration among children who have an incarcerated parent by pointing to the difficulty of educational attainment, social exclusion, stigma, substance abuse, and the exacerbation of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and antisocial behavior (Kjellstrand & Eddy, 2011; Miller & Barnes, 2015; Turney, 2014). Unfortunately, most incarcerated individuals are parents and most incarcerated women are mothers (Scudder, A., et al., 2014, and Miller, et al., 2014). Through the use of art, service providers (artists, clinicians, etc.) that facilitate …
The Power Of Prayer, Victoria Dawn Thompson
The Power Of Prayer, Victoria Dawn Thompson
Capstone Collection
If words are arbitrary, how does prayer have power?” is the question of inquiry in this paper. An unobtrusive Content Analysis inquiry methodology was used to answer this question. The answer lies in the finding that words and thoughts are not the same thing, and our thoughts expand beyond the audible and visible. The implication for professional practice these findings present is that a deeper awareness of “Self” is needed to understand people’s miraculous way of resolving conflict via prayer.

Foundational Knowledge And Other Predictors Of Commitment To Trauma-Informed Care, Stephanie Anne Sundborg
Foundational Knowledge And Other Predictors Of Commitment To Trauma-Informed Care, Stephanie Anne Sundborg
Dissertations and Theses
Trauma-informed care (TIC) is an approach to service delivery based on the understanding of the prevalence of psychological trauma among service users, knowledge about the impact trauma has on engagement to services, and recognition that service settings can be re-traumatizing. For more than a decade, momentum has been building on this topic. Practitioners are pursuing the knowledge and skills needed to implement trauma-informed service delivery, while organizations are building infrastructure and processes aimed at supporting this approach. Disciplines across many human service sectors are eager to incorporate TIC into policy and practice. Despite this enthusiasm, implementation efforts are slow. Acquiring …

The Abcs Of Aba: Comparing Consequence Preferences For Maladaptive Behavior In Children On The Autism Spectrum, Alyssa A. Serceki
The Abcs Of Aba: Comparing Consequence Preferences For Maladaptive Behavior In Children On The Autism Spectrum, Alyssa A. Serceki
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, is a common therapeutic technique that has been implemented since the 1960s as a method of teaching appropriate social and functional behaviors to children on the Autism Spectrum and related disorders. ABA focuses on altering behavior by controlling the Antecedents and Consequences related to the targeted Behavior. ABA is only implemented by trained practitioners, who select from a variety of Consequence options when determining how to modify a given child’s Behavior. Because ABA is rooted in Behavioral Psychology and techniques of learning theory, it is possible that Psychological education may play a role in the …

The Impact Of A Crowdsourcing Apparatus On Organizational Capacity In The Nonprofit Context: The Case Of Bar-Kayma, Ohad Shem Tov
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
While there is considerable information on the crowdsourcing (CS) phenomenon among online and for-profit organizations (Kittur, Chi, & Suh, 2008; Sufen, Zhonghui, & Feng, 2013), our understanding about the phenomenon among nonprofit organizations is limited (Brabham, 2008). The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how integrating a CS apparatus among nonprofit organizations impacts their capacity. The study drew on Hall et al.’s (2003) conceptual model, in which the capacity of a nonprofit organization is determined by its financial, human resources, and structural capitals.
Bar-Kayma (BK), a nonprofit umbrella organization that assists groups of Organized Artists Collectives (OACs) in Jerusalem, …

Obesity and diabetes among adults and children remains a public health concern. Rates of obesity among both demographics are slowly increasing. A plethora of research is available that unveils demographics of those who are at risk of obesity and diabetes. Barriers to healthy eating have also been documented. However, obesity remains a behavioral concern. The Food Education Project (FEP) began in 2012 and emphasizes health education throughout partnered schools in San Francisco. Health educators are employed and lead after school enrichment courses which are chosen by students. The students served are aged 5-17 and are at risk for obesity in …

The Impact Of Housing Insecurity On Community Health Outcomes: Exploring Collective Community Solutions And Housing Models In The Western Addition, Jacqueline V. Brown, Jacqueline Victoria Brown
Master's Projects and Capstones
In a city where housing is scarce and prices continue to rise, the lower income residents of the Western Addition are in panic. Historically, the Western Addition/Fillmore is ground zero for Urban Renewal. This community is still bouncing back from the negative effects of the out migration of Black residents, Japanese internment, and rapid gentrification. For twenty years, this part of the city was known as Harlem of the West due to its world-renowned Jazz and Blues composers, and is informally known as “Tha ‘Mo”. San Francisco has set the tone nationally for public, mixed income, and private housing that …

The Voluntary Practice Of Eugenics: Risk-Taking And Religiosity As Determinants Of Attitudes Toward Conceiving Children With Potential Genetic Disorders And Inheritable Diseases, Roy K. Chen, Allison R. Fleming, Lisa Kuhn, Amanda L. Foster
School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine attitudes toward the voluntary practice of eugenics among people with high-risk inheritable diseases and genetic disorders. Participants consisted of 426 students attending two large public universities in the south and southwestern regions of the United States. The study used the modified scale of attitudes toward mental retardation and eugenics, the risk-taking questionnaire, and the dimensions of religious ideology importance scale. A general linear model was tested to answer the research question. The results showed that the model was significant (p < 0.001; adjusted r2 of 0.078). Significant main effects were found in race [F (4,378) = 2.538, p = 0.04, η² = 0.026], risk avoidance [F (1,378) = 12.536, p < 0.001, η² = 0.032] and importance of religion [F (1,378) = 5.530, p = 0.019, η² = 0.014]. Cultural, ethnic, and religious variables influenced people’s views toward disability. One’s perception of both disability and its impact on quality of life will influence his or her feelings about eugenics and babies with congenital conditions.

The purpose of this paper is to present specific teaching strategies, classroom activities, and service learning assignments that can be adapted across disciplines to meet equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) focused learning objectives. In order to identify promising practices for teaching EDI, this collaboratively authored paper follows the thread of our common strategies, activities, and approaches through our different disciplines and across the different contexts in which we teach. As we wrote together about our common commitment to EDI, the specifics of our disciplines fell into the background as we focused on four core objectives for teaching EDI: awareness, knowledge, …

The Diversity Challenge For Higher Education In Canada: The Prospects And Challenges Of Increased Access And Student Success, Joseph H. Michalski, Tracy Cunningham, Joe Henry
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
With the shifting demographics of societies such as the United States and Canada, access to higher education presents a variety of challenges to ensure that universities are able to meet the challenges associated with increased student diversity on campus. The current paper reviews first the literature on the linkages between social inequality and education, before turning to an examination of Canadian data with respect to access issues and the possible barriers to increasing diversity among postsecondary institutions. The evidence reveals that first-generation students and those whose parents did not attend university, Aboriginal peoples, and students with disabilities (among others) continue …
