The Implementation Of Visible Learning Practices Among Refugee Learners In North-West Texas, Laurie A. Sharp, Jane Dougherty, Genie Baca, Elsa Diego-Medrano
Diversity, Social Justice, and the Educational Leader
The resettlement of refugees has enriched the diversity of many communities throughout the United States. However, the transition associated with refugee resettlement has significant effects on both refugees and the communities in which they have been resettled. Due to the extreme diversity represented among refugees who have been resettled, public school systems and education professionals must identify best practices that meet the rigor of state accountability requirements and foster educational equity among all students. The purpose of this article is to describe how one large elementary public school campus located in North-West Texas has addressed these challenges through an ongoing …
Resurrection In The People: Catholic Identity And Archbishop Romero, Chris Byrnes
Resurrection In The People: Catholic Identity And Archbishop Romero, Chris Byrnes
Denison Journal of Religion
Byrnes distinguishes between personal and communal Catholicism by following the story of Archbishop Oscar Romero. When Romero was appointed to the post of Archbishop in San Salvador, El Salvador, he was a conservative member of the Church who was appointed primarily because of his belief that the Church should remain apolitical. This was particularly important for the Church hierarchy at the time as they struggled to maintain the traditional Church (equivalent with personal Catholicism) while membership in the Popular Church (comparable to communal Catholicism) was growing rapidly. The Popular Church, Byrnes explains, was theologically based in liberation theology and spoke …

Recently Released Women’S Time Spent With Mentors And Achieving Reentry Goals, Rebecca R. Stoddard
Masters Theses
Within the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the local Women’s Resource Center (WRC) fosters a mentoring program, New Beginnings (NB), with the goal to assist recently released jailed women to successfully reintegrate by achieving reentry goals. The following study examines how gender-responsive offender mentoring influences the success of women achieving reentry goals and reentering society. This study uses data from WRC that shows how many hours 78 mentees spent with their mentors before and after they were released from the Kent County jail and if reentry goals were met. It is hypothesized that total, pre-, and post-release hours mentors and …

Intersectionality Between Happiness And Well-Being: A Pilot Study Project In A Midwestern University, Belinda A. Creighton-Smith, Junu Shrestha, Thomas M. Flack, Theodora Merle Jn Baptiste
Faculty Publications
This pilot study measures the possible intersectionality of happiness and well-being. Items were used from the Oxford Happiness and Well-Being Questionnaire, designed to independently measure the constructs of happiness and well-being. 42 items were combined from which 10 items were randomly selected and converted to a six-point Likert scale ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree” and administered to 28 college students at a Midwestern University taking a leisure studies course. The instrument yielded a significant alpha value of α (27) = 0.835. Factor analysis was conducted to find which variable loaded on each factor (happiness and well-being). Items having …

Farming Between Love And Money: Us Midwestern Farmers' Human-Nature Relationships And Impacts On Watershed Conservation, Yuki Yoshida, Courtney G. Flint, Mallory K. Dolan
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
US Midwestern farmers are direct actors in managing nitrogen fertilizers and key to remediating water quality problems in agricultural landscapes. As farmers’ relationships with nature offer insights into their decisions and conservation practices, surveys and interviews with farmers in two Illinois watersheds explored their human–nature relationship perspectives and linkages to conservation practices. While domineering “Master” perspectives theorized as a cause of human-induced environmental problems were found, farmers spoke of obligations to the land and closeness to nature, emphasizing ecologically oriented partnership and stewardship ideals as motivating their conservation efforts. However, production-oriented pressures of the agricultural industry and livelihood and humanitarian …

Beliefs, Attitudes, And Perceptions Of Spirituality: A Case Study Of Homeless Women In Nevada, Jene' M. Hurlbut, Marcia M. Ditmyer
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to assess the beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions of the meaning of spirituality in a cohort of sheltered homeless women in an urban area in southeast Nevada.
Methods: Fourteen (14) personal interviews were conducted at a homeless shelter located in the southwest of the United States. Open-ended questions were used to allow respondents to answer questions in their own terms or in a manner that reflects their own attitudes, beliefs, and/or perceptions rather than those of the researcher. A process for categorization the data collected was used. Respondents agreed to be tape …

The Experience Of Mental Health Practitioners With Computer Games Designed To Induce Empathy, Jordan Reed
The Experience Of Mental Health Practitioners With Computer Games Designed To Induce Empathy, Jordan Reed
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Though mental health care providers’ primary function is to facilitate improved outcomes for their clients, providers who have stigmatizing attitudes towards mental illness can compromise therapeutic outcomes for those living with mental disorders. The therapeutic relationship is the component of care most closely tied to therapeutic outcomes, and this relationship is often jeopardized by provider stigma. Training and mid-career interventions to reduce stigma by enhancing provider empathy for persons with mental illness show varying levels of effectiveness and a majority of these use lecture based instruction. Interventions that engage mental health providers in the experience of persons with mental health …
Nurturing Self: Psychotherapeutic Implications Of Women's Reflections On The Meaning Of Their Cherished Possessions, Stephanie L. Martin
Nurturing Self: Psychotherapeutic Implications Of Women's Reflections On The Meaning Of Their Cherished Possessions, Stephanie L. Martin
The Qualitative Report
Experiencing the importance of one’s personal treasures is ubiquitous to the human experience, but what is the depth and meaning of this lived phenomenon? An interpretive phenomenological method was used to explore the meaning and significance of women’s experience of their cherished personal possessions. Nine women participated in three individual semi-structured phenomenological interviews each. Interpretive analysis revealed that women’s experience of their cherished personal possessions is one of nurturing self. Through their cherished personal possessions, women nurture their sense of self by connecting with others, affirming personal experience, supporting self through change, and cultivating a sense of self. Implications for …

Mediators’ Self-Perception Of Their Work And Practice: Content And Lexical Analysis, Anne Pignault, Raymond Meyers, Claude Houssemand
The Qualitative Report
Mediation is increasingly used in various areas of society. Yet few studies have shed light on the unique work of mediators and their perception of the “mediator effect” on the process. The purpose of this qualitative study is to gather and compare mediators’ views about their work through feedback on their practices and to understand what they perceive as the bases for reaching a favorable outcome. This article presents the results of a content analysis of interviews with 13 mediators from different countries and cultures. The analysis grouped professional discourses into four areas: the process of the mediation meeting, mediation …
Resiliency, Generalized Self-Efficacy And Mindfulness As Moderators Of The Relationship Between Stress And Both Life Satisfaction And Depression Among College Students: An Investigation Of The Resilience Process, Ben N. Smith Iv
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation attempted to add to the resilience literature by answering two research questions. The first was:"does resiliency serve as a unique protective factor compared to generalized self-efficacy (GSE) and mindfulness?" It was hypothesized that (1a) GSE, mindfulness and resiliency at time 1 would all uniquely predict lower depression and higher life-satisfaction at time 2; (1b) resiliency would be a stronger predictor of these outcomes than mindfulness and GSE; and (2) resiliency would uniquely buffer the relationship between stress and both time 2 depression and life satisfaction. The second question was: "Is resiliency predicted by GSE and mindfulness, or, alternatively, …

Gaining Access To Socially Stigmatized Samples, Avon M. Hart-Johnson Phd
The Qualitative Report
Gaining access to stigmatized populations using qualitative sampling requires the application of carefully planned strategies to avoid inadvertent slights to research participants. While there is a growing body of literature on qualitative sampling strategies, there is less discussion on how to manage the sensitivities of stigmatized research participants, such as African American females with incarcerated mates. This paper provides insight into how successful recruitment strategies, aligned with best practices described as checkpoints, enabled this researcher to gain access to a sample of 20 African American women who experienced grief and loss, and social withdrawal as a result of their mate’s …

The Supervision Of School Nurses In New Jersey: Parallel Needs, Actions, And Impacts On Student Care, Lee-Ann Halbert
The Supervision Of School Nurses In New Jersey: Parallel Needs, Actions, And Impacts On Student Care, Lee-Ann Halbert
Theses and Dissertations
New Jersey Certified School Nurses (NJ-CSNs) practice in an environment of parallel needs and actions where the primary goal is the education of the students in the building, yet the health and safety of each student are paramount. The research presented here evaluates how the supervision provided to the NJ-CSNs affects their clinical practice and other areas of decision-making in the school setting. This mixed methods research study of 557 NJ-CSNs reveals that school nurses who are supervised by an educator whose background includes being a registered nurse are better able to provide the optimal support for the nurses, and …
A Video Intervention For Professionals Working With Transgender And Gender Nonconforming Older Adults, Allison R. Warren
A Video Intervention For Professionals Working With Transgender And Gender Nonconforming Older Adults, Allison R. Warren
Dissertations
Abstract
There is consensus that providers who work with transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) older adults should use the language preferred by the older adult; however, self-efficacy in this particular context is unexplored. The current study compared the efficacy of three online interventions for aging-focused professionals designed to increase knowledge of TGNC-related terminology, decrease self-reported negative attitudes towards TGNC individuals, and increase self-efficacy for affirmative interactions. Employees and volunteers of area agencies on aging across the United States (N = 155) were randomly assigned to one of three interventions: written educational information, a video demonstration, or both the written educational …
