Patient-Centered Care: Teaching Psychosocial Skills To New Nurses, Elizabeth Wierman, Susan Jones
Patient-Centered Care: Teaching Psychosocial Skills To New Nurses, Elizabeth Wierman, Susan Jones
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Although the adoption of patient-centered care is increasingly more frequent in healthcare organizations and well supported in nursing, interdisciplinary educational strategies in the acute care setting to support patient-centered care training for caregivers of patients with both medical and behavioral health problems are noticeably lacking (Kitson et al., 2013). This disparity is particularly worrisome in the acute care setting, given the prevalence of comorbid behavioral health problems in the medical inpatient population (Sledge et al., 2015). In an effort to address this gap, our RN Residency Program developed an 8 hour education curriculum, Psychosocial Foundations, aimed at providing resident and …
Fostering Strengths: Using Testimonios To Identify Community Cultural Wealth In Foster Youth, Katherine Mullin
Fostering Strengths: Using Testimonios To Identify Community Cultural Wealth In Foster Youth, Katherine Mullin
Master's Projects and Capstones
Foster youth voices have been silenced in schools, work environments, and many other settings. There is very little research around what works well for foster youth and what their assets are. Foster youth have many skills and resources that they use to navigate systems that continually marginalize them. But these are often ignored or overlooked. This project uses youth voices through Testimonios and Community Cultural Wealth to create a training for group home staff.

Sharing Feelings Of Anger And Peer Sociability, Robert Washington Ii
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Managing anger is important for successful peer relations. The present research examined the association between a child telling a friend when they felt angry, how much better they felt after telling, and peer nominated sociability. Children in Grades 3-5 (males = 94, females = 107) participated (IRB approved) with data collected in group, classroom sessions. Peer nominations for sociability behaviors were assessed (unlimited nominations; no self-nominations). Self-reports of extent of telling friends when angry, perceived benefit of telling a friend when angry, and extent of feeling angry over the last month were collected as well as assessment of classroom mutual …
Community Mobilization: A Community-Wide Approach To Promoting Adolescent Sexual Health, Sam E. Greenberg, Laura Davis, Cheryl Tutt Msw, Tonya Katcher Md, Mph
Community Mobilization: A Community-Wide Approach To Promoting Adolescent Sexual Health, Sam E. Greenberg, Laura Davis, Cheryl Tutt Msw, Tonya Katcher Md, Mph
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Community mobilization is a strategy that organizes a community across sectors for long-term change, and is one way for communities to provide supports for young people to make healthy sexual choices. In the context of teen pregnancy, community mobilization can address the interconnected web of factors that influence teen sexual attitudes by bringing together parents, educators, health care practitioners, young people, and other key community stakeholders to address the issue jointly. From 2014 to 2016, Advocates for Youth, through a cooperative agreement with the US Office of Adolescent Health, provided financial support and capacity-building assistance to three communities to address …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Background: In emerging adulthood, youth often become involved in more serious romantic relationships. However, many lack the skills to avoid an unplanned pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection (STI), and to ensure a healthy dating relationship. Community college students serve nearly half of all undergraduate students in the United States; yet, community colleges typically lack resources for sexual health promotion. Purpose: To assess the need and receptivity for a web-based integrated healthy sexual and dating relationships intervention among community college students. Methods: In summer 2016, we partnered with three community colleges in South Central Texas to conduct an online survey of …

Learning To Heal: The Impact Of A Restorative Justice Program On Crime Victims, Jacquelyn P. Poplawsky
Learning To Heal: The Impact Of A Restorative Justice Program On Crime Victims, Jacquelyn P. Poplawsky
Theses & Dissertations
In the United States, someone is murdered, raped, robbed, or assaulted every 26 seconds (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2015). Violent victimization is a uniquely disorienting dilemma because it is the result of harm from another human being. Extensive research has shown that crime victims’ complex emotional and psychological needs are not adequately fulfilled by the dominant retributive system of justice. The other paradigm of justice that has received extensive consideration from theorists and scholars, with research that now covers multiple continents and 3 decades, is restorative justice.
Restorative justice theory and practice have become effective complementary, and at times, alternative …

Acute Care Physical Therapy Status Post Laparoscopic Loop Sigmoid Colostomy For A Patient With Colorectal Cancer: A Case Report, Elizabeth Race
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer, with an increasing prevalence in the United States. Surgical treatment is common and the American Society of Enhanced Recovery (ASER) established fast track protocols to reduce recovery time and length of stay in the hospital. Early mobilization is a key component of these protocols. The purpose of this case report is to describe the acute physical therapy (PT) for a patient who received a laparoscopic loop sigmoid colostomy. Case Description: The patient was a 73-year-old male admitted to the hospital to receive surgery for a permanent colostomy …
The Psychological Significance Of Play With Imaginary Companions In Early Childhood, Tracy R. Gleason
The Psychological Significance Of Play With Imaginary Companions In Early Childhood, Tracy R. Gleason
Faculty Research and Scholarship
Although social play is common to many species, humans are unique in their ability to extract some of the benefits of social play through imagination. For example, in play with imaginary companions (ICs), children often practice skills that might be useful for later adaptive social, relational, and emotional functioning. While play with ICs does not provide the same immediate feedback that play with real others affords, this imagined, quasisocial context allows children to experiment with or rehearse events that might occur in real relationships. This symbolic enactment of social relationships might afford opportunities to experience not just social situations but …

Identifying Problems And Solutions In Changing State Legislation Regarding Licensed Clinical Social Workers Providing Private Independent Mental Health Services, Dianna Cooper-Bolinskey
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
State regulated social work practice began in the 1960s; by the mid-1990s, all of the states within the United States regulated the profession through licensure. The purpose of licensure was ostensibly to protect the public and the profession; however, legislation defining social work practice varied vastly from state to state. The variation existed not only between states, but also within licensure categories with regard to the scope of practice of the social work profession. Licensed clinical social workers in some states could practice relatively independently, as they had the ability to diagnose, provide psychotherapy, and bill Medicaid, Medicare, and third …

Conquering The Interpreter’S Operational Space: Sign Languageinterpreting Students And Their Acculturation To Deafblind Clients, Gro Hege Saltnes Urdal
International Journal of Interpreter Education
The author reports on how interpreting students developed their evidence-based practice while becoming interpreters for deafblind people. Focus group discussions were conducted with students to explore their thoughts about interacting with deafblind people, and their experiences after such interactions. Data from the focus groups were analyzed using qualitative content analysis (Krippendorff,2013), with the aim of investigating how the mix of classroom instruction, preparatory role-play, and practice placements influenced student's evidence-based practice. The findings show that teachers contributing with their own evidence-based practice prior to the practice placements helped students develop the initial basis for their evidence-based practice. The opportunity to …

How Does Network Improvement Science (Nis) Impact The Recruitment And Retention Of Black And Latino Male Teachers?, Kabba E. Colley, James E. Alford, David Fuentes, Anthony Bundy
NERA Conference Proceedings 2017
The purpose of this study was to answer the following question: How does network improvement science (NIS) impact the recruitment and retention of Black and Latino male teachers? Using multiple sources of data such as Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) documents, video recordings of focus group interviews, self-reflections, informal and formal meetings notes and minutes, our preliminary results revealed that recruitment and retention of Black and Latino male teachers is a complex process that require cross campus collaboration of all stakeholders, the challenging of structures of power, and overcoming institutional and professional barriers. This study is situated within the broader context of the …
