Improving Privacy With Intelligent Cooperative Caching In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Stephen C. Glass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

With the issuance of the Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) for Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communications by the United States National Highway Tra c Safety Administration (NHTSA), the goal of the widespread deployment of vehicular networking has taken a signi cant step towards becoming a reality. In order for consumers to accept the technology, it is expected that reasonable mechanisms will be in place to protect their privacy. Cooperative Caching has been proposed as an approach that can be used to improve privacy by distributing data items throughout the mobile network as they are requested. With this approach, vehicles …

Increasing Language Use In Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christine Honsberger Jan 2017

Increasing Language Use In Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christine Honsberger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Research has demonstrated that higher levels of parent language use is correlated with later language use and intellectual development of their children. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) display deficits in social and communication skills. They also demonstrate repetitive and restrictive behaviors or interests. These behavioral deficits and excesses may contribute negatively to language development, as well as parent and child social interactions, and communication exchanges. The current study used a nonconcurrent multiple-baseline design to evaluate the effectiveness of behavior skills training (BST) and on-going graphical and verbal feedback on increasing parent language use and child words and utterances. Results …

Landscaping Practices, Environmental Ethics, And Sustainability In South Florida, Iiro Maki Jan 2017

Landscaping Practices, Environmental Ethics, And Sustainability In South Florida, Iiro Maki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The research conducted for this thesis explores the link between environmental ethics and household landscaping practices. The central issue of any concept of sustainability is the incommensurability of various elements that define approaches, which is why it is treated here as a politicoethical process of subjective valuation. The ethics of sustainability were delineated according to major currents in environmental ethics, as well as briefly illustrated in the context of a broad discussion of climate change and resource availability, with some examples of strategies at different institutional levels. An online survey of 87 participants provided responses about local landscaping practices, environmental …

Bilingual Sentiment Analysis Of Spanglish Tweets, Melissa Serrano Jan 2017

Bilingual Sentiment Analysis Of Spanglish Tweets, Melissa Serrano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Sentiment Analysis has been researched in a variety of contexts but in this thesis, the focus is on sentiment analysis in Twitter, which poses its own unique challenges such as the use of slang, abbreviations, emoticons, hashtags, and user mentions. The 140-character restriction on the length of tweets can also lead to text that is difficult even for a human to determine its sentiment. Specifically, this study will analyze sentiment analysis of bilingual (U.S. English and Spanish language) Tweets. The hypothesis here is that Bilingual sentiment analysis is more accurate than sentiment analysis in a single language (English or Spanish) …

Changing Consumer Behavior Through Ambient Displays In Smart Cafeterias And Detecting Anomalous Reporting Behavior In Wireless Sensors, Shiree Hughes Jan 2017

Changing Consumer Behavior Through Ambient Displays In Smart Cafeterias And Detecting Anomalous Reporting Behavior In Wireless Sensors, Shiree Hughes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Food availability and food waste are signi cant global problems which can be mitigated through the use of sensor networks. Current methods of monitoring food waste require manual data collection and are implemented infrequently, providing imprecise information. The use of sensors to automate food waste measurement allows constant monitoring, provides a better dataset for analysis, and enables real- time feedback, which can be used to affect behavioral change in consumers. The data from such networks can be used to drive ambient displays designed to educate a target audience, and ultimately reduce the amount of waste generated. We present WASTE REDUCE, …

Characterizing The Magnetic Signature Of Internal Waves, Eric Nieves Jan 2017

Characterizing The Magnetic Signature Of Internal Waves, Eric Nieves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study is performed in tandem with numerous experiments performed by the U.S. Navy to characterize the ocean environment in the South Florida region. The research performed in this study includes signal processing steps for isolating ocean phenomena, such as internal waves, in the magnetic field. Raw magnetometer signals, one on shore and one underwater, are processed and removed of common distortions. They are then run through a series of filtering techniques, including frequency domain cancellation (FDC). The results of the filtered magnetic residual are compared to similarly processed Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data to correlate whether a magnetic …

Charter School Closures In Florida, 2006-2016: A Population Ecology Perspective, Jorene Jameson Jan 2017

Charter School Closures In Florida, 2006-2016: A Population Ecology Perspective, Jorene Jameson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

As part of the education reforms of the 1990s, charter schools were proposed as a private alternative to public education, offering parents and their children greater choices. Publicly financed but privately operated, charter schools have now grown in numbers and influence. While there are many studies of student outcomes in charter schools demonstrating mixed results, one negative outcome of charter schools has been less examined. Since inception, 23% of charter schools nationally have closed and these closures are disruptive to parents, children, and their school districts. This paper addresses charter school closures from an organizational perspective. Applying theory from population …

Development Of A Biosensor To Detect Landfill Odors Using Human Odorant Binding Protein, Julia Gia Roblyer Jan 2017

Development Of A Biosensor To Detect Landfill Odors Using Human Odorant Binding Protein, Julia Gia Roblyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Landfills receive odor complaints from local residents potentially resulting in legal ramifications and decreasing quality of life of the neighboring communities. However, analytical technologies to objectively measure odors in the field that will reflect human odor perceptions at a reasonable price do not currently exist. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is detectable by humans at low odor thresholds and may be one of the main nuisance odors emanating from landfills. For the first time, hOBPIIa complexed with 1- AMA has been used to detect H2S concentrations by spectrofluorometry. The optimal ratio of hOPBIIa-to-1-AMA was determined to be approximately 1:1. A strong linear …

Differences In Nurses’ Perceptions Of Safety Culture, Nurse-Physician Collaboration, And Level Of Job Satisfaction Related To The Type Of Obstetrical Physician Service Delivery Model Utilized, Olga Abiri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Creating a safety culture is the focus in the current healthcare environment. An inhouse, around-the-clock laborist service delivery model has been associated with positive outcomes, but little is known about the laborist structure’s contribution to the labor-anddelivery working environment. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to explore the effects of physician service delivery model on safety culture, nurse-physician collaboration, and nurses’ job satisfaction. An additional purpose was to examine associations between nurses’ perceptions of safety culture, nurse-physician collaboration, and job satisfaction. Ray’s (1981, 1989) Theory of Bureaucratic Caring and Homan’s (1974) Social Exchange Theory guided this study. A …

Distracted Driving: A Cross-Disciplinary Analysis Exploring The Effectiveness Of Public Service Announcements Regarding Texting And Driving That Employ A Filmed Narrative With Emotional Appeals, Jeremy R. Seibold Jan 2017

Distracted Driving: A Cross-Disciplinary Analysis Exploring The Effectiveness Of Public Service Announcements Regarding Texting And Driving That Employ A Filmed Narrative With Emotional Appeals, Jeremy R. Seibold

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Despite efforts to mitigate texting and driving in the United States, accidents as a result of distracted driving continue to increase, especially within the 16-24 age group. Considering the traits of the members of this age group, as well as the attributes of the various means that are utilized to mitigate such behavior, I hypothesize that the employment of filmed narratives in public service announcements is more effective than any other established approach. Testing the validity of this hypothesis, contributing to a lack of research, three methods of analysis were employed in this project: a textual analysis of a filmed …

District Leadership And Systemic Inclusion: A Case Study Of One Inclusive, Effective School District, Elizabeth C. Jekanowski Jan 2017

District Leadership And Systemic Inclusion: A Case Study Of One Inclusive, Effective School District, Elizabeth C. Jekanowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Inclusion is a federal education policy in the United States that challenges educational leaders. Despite U.S. federal laws requiring an inclusive education for students with disabilities (SWD), educators continue to struggle to implement inclusion. Some scholars argue that leadership is the key to inclusion, with most studies focused on principal leadership. Successful inclusive districts are rare, as are studies of these districts. The purpose of this in-depth case study was to describe and understand the leadership practices of SSSD (pseudonym), an inclusive (based on LRE ≥75% for three consecutive years) and effective district (based on district grades of As and …

Story sharing was defined as the respectful space where one …

Iranian American Older Adults’ Attitudes And Proactive Actions Toward Planning Ahead For End-Of-Life Care, Zahra Rahemi Jan 2017

Iranian American Older Adults’ Attitudes And Proactive Actions Toward Planning Ahead For End-Of-Life Care, Zahra Rahemi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Ethnically diverse older adults are the fastest growing population in the U.S. This population may experience transitional processes associated with immigration, acculturation, aging, and end of life (EOL). Advances in technology lead to increases in care options, which can cause uncertainty to make decisions for EOL. Unmade decisions about care prior to becoming unable to communicate are associated with burdens of last-minute decisions at EOL, unwanted intensive EOL treatments for people who may die naturally of old age, financial and emotional costs, and decreased quality of life. In the U.S., a multicultural country with a variety of care options, advance …

Laughing In Space: Robert Heinlein's The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress And Towards A New Humor Framework, Ryan Thurmon Jan 2017

Laughing In Space: Robert Heinlein's The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress And Towards A New Humor Framework, Ryan Thurmon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Humor’s effect on the audience’s relationship to the object, or speaker, of humor has often been neglected, and creating a framework by which scholars can examine how humor works to alter the relationship between audience and other fills this gap. Additionally, the definition of science fiction relies on the existence of a cognitively estranging other and under this definition, humor has not been thoroughly studied. This thesis attempts to explain how humor affects audiences cognitively, utilizing Hegel’s theory of self and other, and then applies this theoretical explanation to the field of science fiction and examines its effects.

Less Is More: Three Traits To Reveal A More Accurate Aging Method, Megan Marie Miller Jan 2017

Less Is More: Three Traits To Reveal A More Accurate Aging Method, Megan Marie Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Recently a new strategy for age-at-death estimation has been developed. In Stephanie Calce’s 2012 article, ‘A New Method to Estimate Adult Age-at-death Using the Acetabulum,’ she redesigns the previous attempts made by Rissech et al. (2006). Her technique simplifies Rissech et al. seven traits by condensing them into three easily identifiable traits. The aim of this paper is to determine that Calce’s original intent to create a more user-friendly and comprehensible scoring method was successful. My focus is to reveal if Calce’s technique is effective between different populations or whether interpopulation variation renders it an unstable approach to age estimation. …

Let’S Get Real: Shifting Perspectives Of Virtual Life, Cailley Millar Jan 2017

Let’S Get Real: Shifting Perspectives Of Virtual Life, Cailley Millar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

A hallmark of the cyberpunk era, virtual reality is now a real and readily available medium for technological entertainment and lifestyle. Cyberpunk texts and contemporary SF that incorporates virtual reality provide a framework for considering the implications of this newly popularized technology. By allowing the user to explore new forms of identity in an alternate reality, virtual reality poses many interesting opportunities for undermining current social constructs related to gender, race, and identity. This thesis investigates real and fictional examples of virtual reality and the significance of authorship and narrative construction, race and social hierarchies, death and selfpermanence, and gender …

Lifeline: Expressions Of Intimacy Through Paint, Ashley Nicole Cassens Jan 2017

Lifeline: Expressions Of Intimacy Through Paint, Ashley Nicole Cassens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Lifeline: Expressions of Intimacy Through Paint is a body of paintings that seeks to bridge physical distance by sensually applying layers of oil paint to recreate the physicality of my husband. I allow the viewer to enter into a private exchange by the use of intimately charged spaces, like the bed, which demonstrates how paint can be a conduit for touch in absentia. By intensely remembering my partner in these works, I reconstitute my knowing him through paint and seek to move beyond mere representation to know and express him better. Therefore, these paintings not only bridge the physical distance …

Should Lip Dosing Be Reconsidered When Performing Open Food Challenges?, Carina Venter, Kate Maslin, Jane Grundy, Gillian Glasbey, Tara Dean

School of Nursing and Midwifery

To the Editor, A lip dose or labial food challenge (LFC) is a simple, easy to perform method of diagnosis that could potentially be a convenient alternative to conducting an oral food challenge in children (1). Rance and Dutau (1) published a paper on LFC in 1997 demonstrating their clinical utility, according to the technique described by Moneret-Vautrin et al. (2). This involved a drop of the allergen being placed on the lower lip and left for 10 seconds to two minutes, with the mouth slightly opened. However, in the study by Rance et al. (1), children with positive LFC …

Nutritional Aspects Of Commercially Prepared Infant Foods In Developed Countries: A Narrative Review, Kate Maslin, Carina Venter Jan 2017

Nutritional Aspects Of Commercially Prepared Infant Foods In Developed Countries: A Narrative Review, Kate Maslin, Carina Venter

School of Nursing and Midwifery

AbstractNutritional intake during infancy is a critical aspect of child development and health that is of significant public health concern. Although there is extensive research on breast-feeding and timing of solid food introduction, there is less evidence on types of solid foods fed to infants, specifically commercially prepared infant foods. The consumption of commercially prepared infant foods is very prevalent in many developed countries, exceeding the consumption of homemade foods in some situations. Although these food products may have practical advantages, there are concerns about their nutritional composition, sweet taste, bioavailability of micronutrients, diversity of ingredients and long-term health effects. …
