Results of the learning styles questionnaire will be presented with suggestions and recommendations for teachers of field dependent and independent online learners.

Bubbles In Experimental Asset Markets, Praveen Kujal, Owen Powell Jan 2017

Bubbles In Experimental Asset Markets, Praveen Kujal, Owen Powell

ESI Working Papers

"One can define a bubble as a persistent increase in the price of an asset over and above its fundamental value with an abrupt fall in prices when no buyers are available to make purchases. The occurrence of market bubbles has a long history, starting with the Dutch Tulip Mania (1624-1637) to the South Sea and Mississippi Bubble (1716-1720), the British Railway Mania (1840´s) to the crash of 1929. Recent events have been the crash of 1987, the dot-com bubble (1990s) to the most recent housing crisis in early 2000. Even though bubbles, and a subsequent crash, may reallocate resources …

Humans’ (Incorrect) Distrust Of Reflective Decisions, Antonio Cabrales, Antonio M. Espín, Praveen Kujal, Stephen Rassenti Jan 2017

Humans’ (Incorrect) Distrust Of Reflective Decisions, Antonio Cabrales, Antonio M. Espín, Praveen Kujal, Stephen Rassenti

ESI Working Papers

Recent experiments suggest that social behavior may be shaped by the time available for decision making. It is known that fast decision making relies more on intuition whereas slow decision making is affected by reflective processes. Little is known, however, about whether people correctly anticipate the effect of intuition vs. reflection on others’ decision making. This is important in everyday situations where anticipating others’ behavior is often essential. A good example of this is the extensively studied Trust Game where the trustor, by sending an amount of money to the trustee, runs the risk of being exploited by the trustee’s …

Freedom Of Information Beyond The Freedom Of Information Act, David Pozen Jan 2017

Freedom Of Information Beyond The Freedom Of Information Act, David Pozen

Faculty Scholarship

The U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) allows any person to request any agency record for any reason. This model has been copied worldwide and celebrated as a structural necessity in a real democracy. Yet in practice, this Article argues, FOIA embodies a distinctively “reactionary” form of transparency. FOIA is reactionary in a straightforward, procedural sense in that disclosure responds to ad hoc demands for information. Partly because of this very feature, FOIA can also be seen as reactionary in a more substantive, political sense insofar as it saps regulatory capacity; distributes government goods in an inegalitarian fashion; and contributes …

Users’ Perceptions Of The Drivers For Corporate Sustainability Disclosures Made By Chinese Listed Companies, Junru Zhang Jan 2017

Users’ Perceptions Of The Drivers For Corporate Sustainability Disclosures Made By Chinese Listed Companies, Junru Zhang

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

China’s economy and development over decades has achieved not only its national prosperity, but also a significant degree of concern about corporate sustainability. As a vehicle of communication to society, corporate sustainability disclosures (CSD) are considered the most effective and efficient, facilitating the empowerment and acknowledgement of stakeholders in the quest for, and understanding of, sustainability. Much research has investigated the influential factors of CSD based on theories developed from Western standards and economy; however, very limited research considers the driving forces created by cultural and political influences based on the understanding of the perceptions of corporate sustainability among stakeholders …

The Performance Analysis Of Power Output In Professional Male Road Cyclists, Alan J. Metcalfe Jan 2017

The Performance Analysis Of Power Output In Professional Male Road Cyclists, Alan J. Metcalfe

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Athletes regularly monitor exercise workload in an attempt to improve and maintain exercise performance. Within road cycling, workload is commonly measured using power output. Yet, it is plausible that power output during road cycling is influenced by several factors such as topography, road gradient or rider specialities. If these factors do influence power output they may influence quantification of workload demands. As such, the purpose of this thesis was to improve our understanding of external workload in professional road cycling and describe the factors which influence power output during performance analysis. Specifically, this thesis examined the power output within single …

A Study Of Walking And Walkability Through A Spatial Justice/Spatial Practice Framework, In Maylands, Western Australia, Tina Askam Jan 2017

A Study Of Walking And Walkability Through A Spatial Justice/Spatial Practice Framework, In Maylands, Western Australia, Tina Askam

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Recent studies have focused on the benefits of walking to health, wellbeing, creativity and social capital. However, apart from select ethnographic observations on walking as a distinct spatial practice (J. Lee & Ingold, 2006), there is a paucity of studies that investigate the ways in which walkers and space interact. Most importantly, there has been a distinct lack of attention to pedestrian perspectives and experiences in theory and in policy on walkability (Middleton, 2011, 2016).

Notable theorists have demonstrated the benefits of participatory walking practices as a conversive and convivial methodology for performance research (Myers, 2009), for intergenerational urban pedagogy …

Impact Of The Affordable Care Act On The Hiv Care Continuum, Ebere Erugo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS; PLWHA) are at increased risk of insufficient medical care due to lack of insurance. Inadequate medical care for PLWHA contributes to increases in HIV transmission rates. The U.S. Surveillance Report noted that in 2015, over 1.2 million people were living with HIV infection, and there were approximately 50,000 new infections every year. The report further stated that about 675,000 people have died from HIV-related illnesses since its discovery in 1981. The implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2014 was intended to provide Americans, including people at …

Strategies To Secure Sustainable Funding For Nonprofit Organizations, Jasmine Y. Hardy Jan 2017

Strategies To Secure Sustainable Funding For Nonprofit Organizations, Jasmine Y. Hardy

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There are 1.4 million active nonprofit organizations in the United States; however, funding sustainability often forces nonprofit senior leaders into closure, which can lead to increased unemployment and decreased services provided to local communities. Nonprofit senior leaders seek help from scholars, at times, to identify strategies to secure sustainable funding sources, improve the sustainability of funding, or prevent or reverse losses of funding to their organizations. Through the conceptual lens of the general systems theory, the 2015-2016 Baldrige Excellence Framework and Criteria, and single- and double-loop learning, this single-case study explored strategies used to secure sustainable funding for nonprofit organizations …

Government Rule Compliance, Safety, And The Influence Of Regulation On Railroad Trainmen, Carlos Mendoza, Phd Jan 2017

Government Rule Compliance, Safety, And The Influence Of Regulation On Railroad Trainmen, Carlos Mendoza, Phd

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Operational testing of railroad trainmen on federal government safety rules is a daily occurrence on every railroad in the United States. This constant testing and resulting discipline distracts trainmen from the task at hand, causing a loss of focus which could lead to injury or accidents. Using the social construction framework, this research sought to gain an understanding of trainmen's perception on how operational testing impacts their workplace safety, as well as how they perceive the U.S. federal government influences regulation and discipline. This phenomenological study investigated a segment of railroad employees, the trainmen, because they are operationally tested more …

The Role Of Humility In Promoting Forgiveness Through Expressive Writing, Henrika M. Marshall-Youquoi Jan 2017

The Role Of Humility In Promoting Forgiveness Through Expressive Writing, Henrika M. Marshall-Youquoi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Forgiveness is an important characteristic of a healthy relationship. Several factors have been shown to be connected to forgiveness, but other factors may play a significant role in the forgiveness process. Little is known about how humility affects forgiveness in the context of an interpersonal conflict. Expressive writing, when combined with humility, may help counselors and other mental health providers in understanding how to better foster forgiveness among individuals and help them cope with stressful events and relational problems. The primary purpose of this study was to examine whether expressive writing involving humility regarding a minor offense leads to increased …

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program: The Need For Better Employment Eligibility Regulations, Gregory S. Crespi Jan 2017

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program: The Need For Better Employment Eligibility Regulations, Gregory S. Crespi

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

People will start seeking tax-exempt debt forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (“PSLF”) program in October of 2017 after satisfying the requirements of 10 years of post-October 1, 2007 employment in a “public service job.” I estimate that eventually 200,000 people a year or more will obtain debt forgiveness under this program, at a total cost to the Treasury of $12 billion/year or more. Estimates are that up to one-quarter of all employment will qualify as a public service job.

For such a large and costly program the precise eligibility criteria are crucial. The statutory definition of a public …

Altruism And Life Satisfaction Among Lgbt Older Adults, Boaz Kahana, Eva Kahana, Tirth Bhatta, Minzhi Ye, Jiao Yu Jan 2017

Altruism And Life Satisfaction Among Lgbt Older Adults, Boaz Kahana, Eva Kahana, Tirth Bhatta, Minzhi Ye, Jiao Yu

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Altruistic attitudes have been found in our prior longitudinal studies to promote positive affective states and life satisfaction in late life (Kahana, Bhatta, Lovegreen, Kahana and Midlarsky 2013). Such attitudes reflect a willingness to help others and an orientation characterized by generosity of spirit. It may be anticipated that such qualities are easier to maintain for older adults who are well integrated members of society and who do not face stigma and discrimination. In this chapter, we extend our research interest in altruism and in prosocial behaviors to LGBT older adults, who had encountered adversity and lack of acceptance in …

Patterns Of New Physical Problems Emerging In Long-Term Care Residents With Dementia, Christine R. Kovach, Julie L. Ellis, Crystal-Rae Walton Jan 2017

Patterns Of New Physical Problems Emerging In Long-Term Care Residents With Dementia, Christine R. Kovach, Julie L. Ellis, Crystal-Rae Walton

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Individuals receiving skilled nursing care have multiple comorbid conditions that impact comfort and resource use. The current study describes variations in the trajectories of new physical problems emerging over 8 weeks and the predictive value for future health and behavior in a sample of 72 residents with dementia. Residents had two to 37 new physical problems occurring over 8 weeks. Sixty-five percent of the sample had five or more new problems and were identified by three unstable trajectories. Common problems, illnesses, and symptoms accounted for 28.2% of the variance in subsequent new physical problems (p < 0.001) and 25.7% of the variance in subsequent agitation (p < 0.001). This study found more new problems than earlier studies that only examined new acute illness. Findings suggest a higher intensity of need for skilled assessment and treatment than may be available in many long-term care organizations.
