Post-Operative Cardiometabolic Effects Of A Behavioral Intervention In Patents Undergoing Partial Meniscectomy, Craig Patrick Flanagan
Post-Operative Cardiometabolic Effects Of A Behavioral Intervention In Patents Undergoing Partial Meniscectomy, Craig Patrick Flanagan
Open Access Dissertations
Patients recovering from orthopedic surgery experience reduced physical activity, increasing future risk for cardiometabolic disease and weight gain. A post-operative wellness consultation, with exercise and nutrition components, may modify the behavior of orthopedic patients to mitigate the detrimental effects of inactivity following surgery and the associated adverse health effects. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of a nutrition and exercise consultation on post-operative physical activity, serum metabolic markers, body composition, knee function, pain, and quality of life. METHODS: Twelve partial meniscectomy patients were randomly assigned to control (CON) or post-surgical consultation (PSC) and evaluated 1 week (1W) and 6 weeks (6W) …
Influencers Experienced In The College Search Process By International Chinese Undergraduate Students Who Use Educational Agents, Brocdyl Joseph Porta
Influencers Experienced In The College Search Process By International Chinese Undergraduate Students Who Use Educational Agents, Brocdyl Joseph Porta
Open Access Dissertations
This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews of five International Chinese Undergraduate (ICU) students attending a research university in South Florida to better understand how they experienced the college choice process. Unlike traditional U.S. native-born students, the literature indicates that some international students may have influencers linked to the financial costs associated with hiring educational agents in the college choice phases (Pimpa, 2003; Hossler & Gallagher, 1987), parental and familial aspirations for student, and institutional ranking information connected to marketing materials. Using thematic analysis, the following two major themes associated to four subthemes emerged as general findings from these analyses: 1) …

Toward Effective Dengue Fever Surveillance And Case Management In The Dominican Republic: Perceptions From Patients, Practitioners And Policy-Makers, Deborah D. Roque
Open Access Theses
Leading among arboviral disease morbidity and mortality is dengue fever with an estimated 390 million infections a year of which 96 million present clinical manifestations. In the Dominican Republic (DR), dengue fever is endemic where high incidence and outbreaks continue, with the most recent epidemic occurring in 2015. Failed prevention and control efforts have placed an onus on early diagnosis and treatment to aid in surveillance and help reduce dengue disease burden. This study explored dengue care, management and prevention perceptions among three main actors of the dengue diagnostic-management-surveillance scheme: patients, practitioners, and policy-makers. Participant observation, structured interviews, semi-structured interviews, …
A Note On Mitigating The Adverse Scale Effects Associated With Daily Driving Restrictions, Arthur J. Caplan, Man-Keun Kim
A Note On Mitigating The Adverse Scale Effects Associated With Daily Driving Restrictions, Arthur J. Caplan, Man-Keun Kim
Applied Economics Faculty Publications
This paper investigates the role of additional regulation in mitigating the “adverse scale effect” associated with daily driving restrictions, which has become a popular regulatory tool used to control episodic air pollution internationally, especially in developing countries. We find that although an annual vehicle registration tax reduces the incentive to purchase additional vehicles among households whose sole purpose for doing so is to “cheat” the restriction (i.e., the “adverse scale effect”), it does so with an external cost. The cost occurs because households whose purpose for purchasing an additional vehicle is not to cheat the restriction are given the same …
Refugee Policy & Social Integration In Jordan: Structural Barriers To Enclave Formation Among Forced Migrants To Jordan, David Nardelli
Refugee Policy & Social Integration In Jordan: Structural Barriers To Enclave Formation Among Forced Migrants To Jordan, David Nardelli
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The displacement of over five million Syrian refugees in the past six years has brought much needed attention to issues of forced migration. Today, the majority of the world’s refugees and internally displaced reside in urban areas of middle to low-income states, particularly in Asia and Africa. There is, however, a significant gap in research on self-settled refugees in the Middle East and their integration into host countries. In addition, much of the literature that does exist focuses on policies regarding labor policies yet ignores housing and settlement pattern issues and its impact on integration and community growth. This research …
Exploring The Impacts That An Urban Public High School Experience Has On Bridgewater State University Students’ Perceived College Preparedness, Katherine R. Trudell
Exploring The Impacts That An Urban Public High School Experience Has On Bridgewater State University Students’ Perceived College Preparedness, Katherine R. Trudell
Honors Program Theses and Projects
College preparedness is a widely researched topic within education. Previous research has found that an individual’s college readiness is primarily determined by the rigor of their high school academics, their involvement in extracurricular activities, and their knowledge of the higher educational system (Conley 2008; Glater 2016; Glennie et al. 2015; Holles 2016). The purpose of this project was to investigate whether or not Bridgewater State University students felt that these factors affected their individual preparedness for college. For this project, I interviewed 18 students who attended urban public high schools in Southeastern Massachusetts in order to explore whether or not …

Judgements Of Managerial Personality Affecting Employee Job Satisfaction, Makenzi Astore
Judgements Of Managerial Personality Affecting Employee Job Satisfaction, Makenzi Astore
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Personality is the configuration of thought, emotions and behaviors (Funder, 2013). Locke argues that job satisfaction is a positive state that derives from appraisal of a job experience (as cited in Ilies & Judge, 2004, p. 367). Job satisfaction has consistently been shown to affect productivity. The purpose of this study was to determine if employee judgements of managerial personality characteristics contribute to the overall satisfaction of the employee. I surveyed 79 individuals from the Bridgewater State University community and beyond, each being at least 18 years of age and employed to some capacity. The survey measured the level of …
How Do You Like Me Now? An Examination Of College Students’ Use Of Social Media Sites, James D. Wheeler Iii
How Do You Like Me Now? An Examination Of College Students’ Use Of Social Media Sites, James D. Wheeler Iii
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The digital era and the rise of new technology within everyday experiences has led young adults to seek out social media sites as a means of socializing, identity building, self-expression, and seeking validation from peers and friends. The previous work of scholars expresses how social media sites have become a predominate form of communication amongst young adults, and are a social hub for establishing communities that foster particular ideals and online behavior of ‘digital natives’ (those born right before and after the general introduction of digital technologies). This research project contextualizes young adults’ use and behaviors on social media by …

Transformations Of The Turkish Headscarf: An Exploration Of The Political Meaning, Socio-Economic Impact, Cultural Influence, And The Art And Craft Of The Hijab, Kelsey Gabrielle Leuenberger
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The wearing of hijab by Muslim women is a divisive issue around the world. The history of veiling by Turkish women is important because it is so controversial and because of its global relevance in contexts of economics, politics, and culture. The headscarf, as a form of art and power, has significant influence on the freedoms of women. The goal of this research project is to elevate Western understanding of Turkish women’s headscarf veiling as it is located in economic, political, cultural, and socio-historical contexts and as it intersects with artistic influence and design. This research on the contradictions and …
