Master's Projects and Capstones

At the conclusion of a patient’s hospitalization the Registered Nurse (RN) will review all discharge instructions in the patients room in their preferred language. Plan time for the discharge and facilitate a calm quiet environment, such as the patient’s room with the door closed, if possible. Get the discharge instructions printed out in their preferred language and a set for yourself in English would be best so you are able to review the instructions line by line with them. When the patients medical team, such as but not limited to, medical doctors, pharmacists, physical therapists, and social work have completed …

Interdisciplinary Team Approach In Fall Prevention: Physician Perspective Focus, Anna Gryn Dec 2017

Interdisciplinary Team Approach In Fall Prevention: Physician Perspective Focus, Anna Gryn

Master's Projects and Capstones

An in-hospital fall is a devastating event for patients and care providers resulting in injuries, physiological and psychological patient declines, and sometimes deaths. Furthermore, fall related costs greatly increase hospitals’ expenses and cause massive distress to caregivers and health providers. Many patient-specific, organizational, and seemingly erratic factors contribute to the occurrence of in-hospital falls. Despite this, hospitals must undertake consistent evidence-based measures to prevent fall occurrences as much as possible.

The traditional nursing approach to falls prevention is not sufficient to control fall rates because the issue is too complex and must be approached from multiple perspectives rather than just …

Improving Nurse Proficiency: Breastfeeding And The Opioid-Dependent Mother And Infant Diagnosed With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (Nas), Lauren Mountanos

Master's Projects and Capstones

Management of the opioid-dependent mother-infant dyad is complex. Evidence suggests breastfeeding may decrease the severity of NAS symptoms, delay its onset, and decrease the need for pharmacologic treatment (Macmullen et al., 2014). Therefore, education of nursing staff on the benefits of breastfeeding for opioid-dependent dyads will enable them to safely recommend breastfeeding for long-term health (Pritham, 2013). The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) project, “Improving Nurse Proficiency: Breastfeeding and the Opioid-Dependent Mother and Infant Diagnosed with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS)” aims to globally increase the number of infants diagnosed with NAS discharged on breast milk by 10% by June 30, 2018. …

Master's Projects and Capstones

Purpose:

Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project is to implement a falls intervention to improve falls on the Medical Telemetry unit in the large metropolitan hospital.

Background: Between 700,000 and 1,000,000 falls occur in hospitals every year. Furthermore, approximately 30-35% of these falls result in injury and 11,000 falls result in death (Health Research & Educational Trust, 2016). Falls harm patients, families, and providers. They are also a high cost, as many insurance companies will not reimburse care when a patient falls. As a hospital organization it is important to ensure funds are going to the appropriate places. …

Inpatient Hospice Home: A Needs Assessment And Business Plan, Stacey Middleton

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

An Abstract of the Scholarly Project by

Stacey Middleton

There are two constants that every person can count on in life, being born and dying. No amount of research is required, and there is no need to challenge the inevitable. When a child is born, people celebrate and congratulate the new parents and their family. When a person dies, people are saddened by the loss of a friend and loved one. Death comes to all and is either, fast and unexpected or a slow drawn out process. Every dying patient deserves to die with dignity, be free from pain, and …

Development Of A Curriculum Analysis And Simulation Library With Applications In Curricular Analytics, Michael S. Hickman

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Higher education institutions are currently investing significant resources in attempts to improve student success by improving instruction quality, implementing tutoring programs, and providing other services to help students. While these are all worth- while, one area that tends to be overlooked is the structure of the curricula that are offered. When viewing curricula as data, or more specifically, a graph, it is intuitive to see how its structure can influence a student’s ability to move through it. How- ever, there are currently no tools to analyze a curriculum’s structural properties and how they might affect student success. This thesis describes …

The March Of The Union Armies: James Henry Lane, The Union, And The Development Of Total War On The Kansas-Missouri Border, Alex Lahasky

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

James Henry Lane was a giant of Kansas politics during the mid-nineteenth century. His leadership during the territorial crisis of 1855—commonly known as the “Bleeding Kansas” era—contributed mightily to Kansas’s entry as a free state in 1861. During the early stages of the ensuing Civil War, Lane’s political and military presence on the plains was ubiquitous; he served simultaneously as a United States Senator and a brigadier general of the Union Army. Lane’s activities during the first year of the war provide the focal point of the present study.

With Kansas under threat from secessionist elements in neighboring Missouri, Lane …

© 2017 American Chemical Society. Many bacteria encode biosynthetic proteins that produce a vast array of natural products. These compounds are often synthesized during host invasion as they function as virulence factors. In addition, such secondary metabolites have yielded numerous molecular scaffolds with pharmaceutical and clinical importance. The gene clusters that encode proteins responsible for synthesis of these compounds are typically silenced or "cryptic" under laboratory growth conditions, hampering discovery of novel lead compounds. We report here that MftR is a global repressor of secondary metabolite synthesis in Burkholderia thailandensis and that urate functions as a physiologically relevant inducer of …
