The Impact Of Celebrity Endorsement Of A Conspiracy Theory On The Media Consumers, Lindsay Stern, Kendal Munyon, Hunter Davis Dec 2017

The Impact Of Celebrity Endorsement Of A Conspiracy Theory On The Media Consumers, Lindsay Stern, Kendal Munyon, Hunter Davis

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Celebrity endorsement has a strong influence on the general population. However, this effect was typically studied in the context of celebrities’ support for non- controversial topics. We wanted to see if celebrities would have the same effect when they supported controversial topics. It is hypothesized that those who are exposed to a liked celebrity endorsing a conspiracy theory will be more inclined to accept the theory.

Additionally, celebrity endorsement for a controversial topic has the potential to cause the celebrity to be less liked. If an individual learns that a celebrity supports a controversial topic like a conspiracy theory, an …

The Free-Play Sandbox: A Methodology For The Evaluation Of Social Robotics And A Dataset Of Social Interactions, S Lemaignan, C Edmunds, E Senft, T Belpaeme

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Evaluating human-robot social interactions in a rigorous manner is notoriously difficult: studies are either conducted in labs with constrained protocols to allow for robust measurements and a degree of replicability, but at the cost of ecological validity; or in the wild, which leads to superior experimental realism, but often with limited replicability and at the expense of rigorous interaction metrics. We introduce a novel interaction paradigm, designed to elicit rich and varied social interactions while having desirable scientific properties (replicability, clear metrics, possibility of either autonomous or Wizard-of-Oz robot behaviours). This paradigm focuses on child-robot interactions, and builds on a …

Scaling Up With Radically Embodied Cognition, Benjamin Aguda Dec 2017

Scaling Up With Radically Embodied Cognition, Benjamin Aguda

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Radically embodied cognitive science (REC) is typically concerned with basic cognition such as perception and action. However, complex cognition or higher-order cognition is difficult to explain for REC, as these theories eschew traditional representational explanations. This leaves REC with a scaling-up problem. In this dissertation I will explore options for REC to fix its scaling-up problem. I am specifically interested in autonoetic cognition, which is the ability to remember and imagine objects and events in the way they would be experienced if they were immediately present to be perceived. I contend that a simulationist account provides many of th necessary …

Establishing Cognitive Predictor Thresholds For Proficiency In Reading And Mathematics: Analysis Of The Woodcock-Johnson Iv Developmental-Age Norming Sample, Philip A. Norfolk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Assessment of specific learning disabilities (SLD) in educational settings is one important function of a school psychologist. The federal definition of SLD describes"underlying cognitive processing deficits" as part of the assessment criteria, that is also incorporated into several states' SLD eligibility criteria, that is difficult to directly evaluate using traditional assessment methods. Traditionally, use of norm-referenced scores have been used to compare an examinee's relative performance on assessment tests. Such a method does not provide direct evidence of underlying cognitive processing deficits associated with poor academic achievement. In an effort to directly inform this cognitive processing ability and academic proficiency …

Long-Term Neurocognitive, Behavior And Emotional Outcomes In Survivors Of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Treated With Chemotherapy Only, Wei Liu Dec 2017

Long-Term Neurocognitive, Behavior And Emotional Outcomes In Survivors Of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Treated With Chemotherapy Only, Wei Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Contemporary chemotherapy results in a greater than 90% five-year survival rate from childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). However, long-term survivors of childhood ALL still present with a higher prevalence of neurocognitive function problems, specifically executive function deficits, and behavior emotional problems compared to the general population. We conducted two epidemiologic studies of these issues and a Phase II clinical trial to improve executive deficits among long-term childhood ALL survivors. First, we evaluated the association between sustained attention and parent-rated behavioral inattention at the end of chemotherapy, and neurocognitive outcomes at long-term follow-up (LTFU). Patients demonstrated higher frequency of impairment in …

Data Collection, Body-Weight Generation And Efficient Storage Of Physiological Data, Dewashish Koirala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Data is the key for developing algorithms that can infer the causes of agitation in mentally-ill individuals. Unfortunately, appropriate datasets are not readily available due to issues such as confidentiality breach and privacy invasion. This thesis addresses three problems.First, we identify a number of publicly-available datasets that are functions of actions and emotions of mentally-ill individuals. These include datasets of physiological signals, training videos and commercial movies.Second, we synthesize change in body-weight as a function of actions and emotions by extending a well-known model. The extended model is evaluated with respect to change in diet, physical activity and stress, using …

I want to make mundane, inconsequential things special through painting. Often, trivial things do not inspire people. However, I think this can change. The trivial parts of our daily experiences affect us unknowingly. If everything in the world were perfectly orderly and nonspecific, we would have had a boring and monotonous life. The specificity of the trivial parts provides us with fun, surprise, wonder, and curiosity. For example, tooth marks on top of a pencil, the top corner of the book is folded, or nails with a manicure peeled off can cause minor empathy …

Reflections From The Road: Vincentian Hospitality Principles In Healthcare Education For The Indigent, John M. Conry Dec 2017

Reflections From The Road: Vincentian Hospitality Principles In Healthcare Education For The Indigent, John M. Conry

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Hospitality and health care are clearly connected, both etymologically and practically. Health care has traditionally been delivered in hospitals. Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac developed the concept and practice of Vincentian health care, demonstrating a preferential option for the poor. It is important that those who work in healthcare understand and remain committed to Vincentian and hospitality based health care, particularly for the indigent and marginalized. The need for Vincentian and hospitality-based health care remains relevant and necessary in contemporary society, as there remains health inequity, particularly for the poor.

Frankenstein's Fixations: A Psychoanalytic Approach To Childhood, Sexuality, And Outsiders, Kaitlin Harris Dec 2017

Frankenstein's Fixations: A Psychoanalytic Approach To Childhood, Sexuality, And Outsiders, Kaitlin Harris

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

By using Frankenstein by Mary Shelley as a case study, my project explores readers’ and characters’ experiences with others that might appear as a threat. Furthermore, I intend to deconstruct the ambiguity of relations with others and the self based on the concepts of the sublime and uncanny affect. My argument displays how isolating a living being from society recapitulates a cycle of unconscious abuse. Due to the different critical approaches in relation to the unconscious and the unreachable double, it is difficult to find research in literature that approaches familial and sexual relationships that incorporate the two simultaneously. I …

Conquering Math Anxiety, Kendra Ellett Dec 2017

Conquering Math Anxiety, Kendra Ellett

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Mathematics is often perceived as a vigorous and demanding subject, and many students treat it as such, developing high affective filters which inhibit the process of learning math. Much of the research on math anxiety suggests low test scores and feelings of disenchantment are direct consequences of math anxiety, and other literature goes further in asserting math anxiety puts students’ futures and academic experiences on the line. A review of the literature indicates a variety of math pedagogical methods which have been specifically designed to assuage the symptoms of math anxiety: subject integration, creative methods, visual/kinesthetic models and real life …

Actual Vs. Perceived Body Composition And How Body Image Impacts College Students, Kiera Papish, Pyper Newton Dec 2017

Actual Vs. Perceived Body Composition And How Body Image Impacts College Students, Kiera Papish, Pyper Newton

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

It has been estimated that up to two thirds of young women and one third of young men experience significant dissatisfaction with their body size, shape, condition, or appearance. Body image dissatisfaction, weight concerns, eating problems, and physical attractiveness have become especially significant issues on college campuses due to the stresses accompanied with this major transition in a young person’s life. The purpose of this IRB approved quantitative study was to investigate perceived body composition compared to actual composition in college students. Participants were asked to complete three surveys that took a total of 20 minutes or less. These surveys …

Speech And Language Intervention For Schizophrenia: An Interdisciplinary Survey Study, Tori Cook Dec 2017

Speech And Language Intervention For Schizophrenia: An Interdisciplinary Survey Study, Tori Cook

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

According to the Scope of Practice for speech-language pathologists (SLPs), set forth by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, SLPs are responsible for offering therapy to individuals with psychiatric illnesses, including schizophrenia. People with schizophrenia often struggle with social use of language which may lead to difficulty maintaining relationships and employment. These individuals may also experience negative stigma as a result of expressive and receptive language difficulties. Although the treatment of schizophrenia has traditionally remained in the realm of psychiatry, some studies have shown that individuals with schizophrenia can benefit from speech-language therapy. The purpose of this study was to examine schizophrenia …

Kids Make Sense... And They Vote: The Importance Of Child Study In Learning To Teach Responsively, Frederick Erickson

Occasional Paper Series

A lecture that discusses the "developmental-interaction" perspective and practice that has become the hallmark of Bank Street. Erickson builds upon the relations of mutual influence among students, teachers, and learning environments, and taking account of the relations between local practice within the small-scale "here and now" interactional ecosystems of immediate learning environments and the workings of culture, language, and society across more distal connections in social space and time.

The Developmental-Interaction Approach To Education: Retrospect And Prospect, Nancy Nager, Edna K. Shapiro Dec 2017

The Developmental-Interaction Approach To Education: Retrospect And Prospect, Nancy Nager, Edna K. Shapiro

Occasional Paper Series

This paper analyzes the past, present, and future of the developmental-interaction approach to education: human development and the interaction between thought and emotion as well as the interaction between learners and their environment. Shapiro and Nager review the history of the developmental-interaction approach, outlining its essential features and tracing Bank Street College's distinctive role in its evolution. They then reassess key assumptions, address criticisms of developmental theory and its place in education, and suggest possible new directions.

Revisiting The Voluntariness Of Confessions After State V. Sawyer, Michael Theodore Bigos Dec 2017

Revisiting The Voluntariness Of Confessions After State V. Sawyer, Michael Theodore Bigos

Maine Law Review

Every individual in our society needs confidence in our criminal justice system to know that one cannot be convicted of a crime unless a fact finder is convinced of every necessary element with the highest assurances of the truth. The process of establishing facts in a criminal trial is highly dependent upon how decision-making power is allocated between the judge and the jury and upon the fairness of that allocation. This Note discusses the areas of confession law and burdens of proof in the context of how federal criminal constitutional doctrines that affect the fact-finding process offer less than clear …

Rideout V. Riendeau: Grandparent Visitation In Maine After Troxel, Theodore A. Small Dec 2017

Rideout V. Riendeau: Grandparent Visitation In Maine After Troxel, Theodore A. Small

Maine Law Review

Rideout v. Riendeau presented a case in which two grandparents, Rose and Chesley Rideout, sought visitation of their three grandchildren. Though the Rideouts had served as the childrens' “primary caregivers and custodians” for significant periods of time, the childrens' parents, Heaven-Marie Riendeau, who was the Rideouts' daughter, and Jeffrey Riendeau, ended all contact between the children and the Rideouts due to a strained relationship between the Rideouts and the Riendeaus. The Rideouts filed a complaint pursuant to Maine's Grandparents Visitation Act (the Act), which allows grandparents to bring a petition for visitation when there is a “sufficient existing relationship between …

A Critical Analysis Of The Women's Constitutional And Legal Rights In Zimbabwe In Relation To The Convention Of The Elimination Of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women, Amy S. Tsanga Dec 2017

A Critical Analysis Of The Women's Constitutional And Legal Rights In Zimbabwe In Relation To The Convention Of The Elimination Of All Forms Of Discrimination Against Women, Amy S. Tsanga

Maine Law Review

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) comprehensively outlines the international standards on the rights of women that are to be pursued by State Parties to the Convention. Adopted by the General Assembly in 1979, it entered into force in 1981 and set the scene for a comprehensive approach to the human rights of women by State Parties that have ratified the Convention. The underlying spirit of the Convention is that discrimination against women violates principles of equality and respect for human dignity and presents obstacles to the advancement of women in the political, …

Incorporating Videos And Related Digital Assignments In A Child Development Course, Pamela Schuetze Ph.D. Dec 2017

Incorporating Videos And Related Digital Assignments In A Child Development Course, Pamela Schuetze Ph.D.

Fostering Innovation in Teaching with Technology (FITT) Academy

Project Scope:

In order to fully appreciate child development, it is essential for students to be exposed to children of a variety of ages which is best achieved by observing children. However, due to numerous logistical challenges, it is difficult to conduct live, in-person observations of children. Furthermore, in order to fully discuss concepts relevant to the study of child development in class, students need to familiarize themselves with the concept prior to the class meeting. One method for achieving this is to partially "flip" the class so that students watch a video lecture that describes the concepts prior to …

Job Segregation, Gender Blindness, And Employee Agency, Tracy E. Higgins Dec 2017

Job Segregation, Gender Blindness, And Employee Agency, Tracy E. Higgins

Maine Law Review

Almost forty years after the enactment of Title VII, women's struggle for equality in the workplace continues. Although Title VII was intended to “break[] down old patterns of segregation and hierarchy,” the American workplace remains largely gender-segregated. Indeed, more than one-third of all women workers are employed in occupations in which the percentage of women exceeds 80%. Even in disciplines in which women have made gains, top status (and top paying) jobs remain male-dominated while the lower status jobs are filled by women. This pattern of gender segregation, in turn, accounts for a substantial part of the persistent wage gap …

Gender Typing In Stereo: The Transgender Dilemma In Employment Discrimination, Richard F. Storrow Dec 2017

Gender Typing In Stereo: The Transgender Dilemma In Employment Discrimination, Richard F. Storrow

Maine Law Review

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) prohibits discrimination against men because they are men and against women because they are women. This familiar characterization of the Act has been quoted in dozens of sex discrimination cases to support a narrow view of who is protected against sex discrimination in this country. When transsexuals file suit, “[e]mployment discrimination jurisprudence at both the federal and state levels ... captures transsexuals in a discourse of exclusion from social participation. This wide net, using a remarkably refined system of semantic manipulations, snags all claims launched by transsexuals and reveals …

Keynote Address: The Difference "Difference" Makes, Deborah L. Rhode Dec 2017

Keynote Address: The Difference "Difference" Makes, Deborah L. Rhode

Maine Law Review

Over the last two decades, we have witnessed a transformation for women in law, but not a transformation in leadership positions. Almost 30% of lawyers are women, but they represent only about 15% of federal judges and law firm partners, and about 10% of law school deans and general counsel positions at Fortune 500 companies. The same patterns are apparent in other leadership sectors, such as management and politics. Women are half the electorate but only 15% of Congress and 6% of state governors. They account for about half of managers but only 1% of the Chief Executive Officers of …

Proactive Hiv Testing Among Youth, Oluwamuyiwa Winifred Adebayo Dec 2017

Proactive Hiv Testing Among Youth, Oluwamuyiwa Winifred Adebayo

Open Access Dissertations

HIV testing is used to identify people at risk for HIV infection, or those who are infected, and provide linkage to appropriate care that will decrease HIV risk or manage HIV infection. However, youth have low rates of HIV testing and participate in testing mainly due to recommendations from healthcare providers. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the factors that influence proactive HIV testing among youth and how these factors are related to the decision to test for HIV infection. The Information Motivation Behavior (IMB) model, and the Ottawa Decision Support Framework (ODSF) were used to guide the …

A Cultural Comparison Of The Facial Inference Process, Janine K. Swiney, Anthony J. Stahelski

Student Published Works

The purpose of this study was to compare emotion and personality trait attributions to facial expression between American and Indian samples. Data were collected using Amazon.com’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Participants in this study were asked to correctly identify the emotion and make inferences from pictures of three different facial expressions (scowling, frowning, and smiling) of young white females and males in six photographs. Each picture was randomly presented for 10 seconds followed by four randomized questions about the individual in the picture. The first question asked participants to identify the emotion shown from a list of six emotions (anger, disgust, …

Warm Smiles, Soft Chairs: A Testament To The Power Of Ambience, Cari Phillips Dec 2017

Warm Smiles, Soft Chairs: A Testament To The Power Of Ambience, Cari Phillips

Tutor's Column

In this paper I discuss the effects of positive ambience within a writing center environment. Effective writing centers encourage student relaxation through positive tutor affect, soothing nature-based decor, and organization that promotes low power-distance. The use of open, friendly attitudes, warm colors, and breathing room allow writing center attendees to relax. As a result, attendees of this kind of writing center are more effective, engaged, and motivated to dig deep while pursuing the writing process. Combining research with personal experience, I relate an effective writing center to a positive classroom learning environment, comparing the effects of various methods of classroom/center …
