Collecting And Selecting, Masy Hebert Jan 2017

Collecting And Selecting, Masy Hebert

LSU Master's Theses

In Collecting and Selecting, I am exploring the way others adorn their lives and how these elements add up to emblematize the keeper of the treasures. With linoleum relief prints and drawings, I compose a unique type of portraiture that reveals the parallel identity between the way we dress ourselves and our living spaces. Within my process, I capture moments with photographs, draw, carve, print, and cut out the elements that hold a presence of the owner. Utilizing a heightened sense of contrast with black and white images, the textures and details of these objects come alive. Each gallery wall …

Chronicle & Character, Taryn Moller Nicoll Jan 2017

Chronicle & Character, Taryn Moller Nicoll

LSU Master's Theses

In this thesis paper, I argue that the works in the exhibition 'Chronicle & Character' aim to demonstrate artistic citizenship and can contribute positively to society by provoking conversation about universally applicable (but often uncomfortable) topics. Experts such as David J. Elliot state that being an artistic citizen means that one’s concerns as an artist must shift from issues constrained to the artist alone to those of the artist’s surrounding community. The exhibition 'Chronicle & Character' contains works that serve as detailed chronicles of the medical or physiological experiences of my loved ones. This body of work presents how three …

National Electoral Winners And Losers: Satisfaction With Democracy Predicated On Institutional Context, Casey Newman Knott Jan 2017

National Electoral Winners And Losers: Satisfaction With Democracy Predicated On Institutional Context, Casey Newman Knott

LSU Master's Theses

How does being an electoral winner or loser shape a citizen’s satisfaction with democracy? More importantly, how does the voter’s institutional context moderate this relationship? In this paper, I demonstrate that the institutional context of a democracy interacts with a citizen’s national- level electoral loser status to moderate the relationship between the individual’s status as a loser and her satisfaction with democracy in her country. I also explore the way winning and losing at different levels of representation interact to formulate satisfaction with democracy. Using cross-sectional survey data from the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems nested in 75 different country-election …

How American Is The American College Fraternity? Examining The European Legacy Within The U.S. Greek System, Andrew Thomas Bell Jan 2017

How American Is The American College Fraternity? Examining The European Legacy Within The U.S. Greek System, Andrew Thomas Bell

LSU Master's Theses

In this study, a cultural dissemination model is used to identify the cultural markers a fraternalism across multiple educational environments all in an attempt to answer the question “How American is the American college fraternity?” Aspects of modern fraternities and sororities were broken down and their historical predecessors were identified in order to track cultural dissemination, or diffusion. “Diffusion is the spread of culture traits and, as Wissler (140,146) and Bartlett (7) have demonstrated, this spread may be either conscious or unconscious” (Willey & Herskovits, 1927, p. 263). Primarily systems the broad European Fraternalism, European Universities (German and English), American …

One Two One, Brianna Morgan Ozanne Jan 2017

One Two One, Brianna Morgan Ozanne

LSU Master's Theses

These things, they speak in whispers. Come close, lean in, listen up. Whisper back. Tell me everything. I know you’ve been here, too. I know you’ll understand. I know you have a shoebox full of memories just like these hidden deep inside your closet. I know.

Active Judging And Access To Justice, Anna E. Carpenter Jan 2017

Active Judging And Access To Justice, Anna E. Carpenter

Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works

“Being a good judge in this environment means unlearning what you learned in law school about what a judge is supposed to do. Fairness is doing things a federal judge would never do.” Active judging, where judges step away from the traditional, passive role to assist those without counsel, is a central feature of recent proposals aimed at solving the pro se crisis in America’s state civil courts. Despite growing support for active judging as an access to justice intervention, we know little, empirically, about how judges interact with pro se parties as a general matter, and even less about …

Exculpation As Inculpation, Russell L. Christopher Jan 2017

Exculpation As Inculpation, Russell L. Christopher

Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works

Should a criminal defendant who contrives, creates, or causes the conditions of her own defense forfeit the defense? For example, suppose a provocateur taunts a provocatee into unlawfully attacking so that the provocateur may justifiably kill in self-defense. There are two competing approaches. Under the principle that defense-contrivers have "unclean hands," the predominant approach of the criminal law is to bar the defense (the Legal approach). Disagreeing, most criminal theorists advocate both granting the contrived defense and, seemingly paradoxically, imposing criminal liability for culpably contriving the defense (the Theoretical approach). That is, seeking exculpation is itself inculpatory. The Theoretical approach …

The Influence Of Social Support And Mental Illness On Punishment For Rule Violations Among Male Prisoners, Missy T. Malone Jan 2017

The Influence Of Social Support And Mental Illness On Punishment For Rule Violations Among Male Prisoners, Missy T. Malone

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Mental illness among prisoners is higher than the general population (James & Glaze, 2006). The purpose of this exploratory-descriptive study was to investigate the social support and mental health factors that best predict punishment severity for institutional rule violations among prisoners. I conducted a secondary data analysis on 2004 Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau for the Bureau of Justice Statistics. The survey participants in this study consisted of a sample of 11,569 male prisoners. Bivariate analyses of interrelationships were conducted to assess whether significant relationships exist between the severity of punishment …

A Phenomenological Investigation Into The Experiences And Perceptions Of Teachers Education Program Graduates At Public Historically Black College And Universities In Louisiana, La'quita Maya Magee Jan 2017

A Phenomenological Investigation Into The Experiences And Perceptions Of Teachers Education Program Graduates At Public Historically Black College And Universities In Louisiana, La'quita Maya Magee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

As a growing number of students from racially and culturally diverse backgrounds enter United States’ public schools, fundamental changes in our educational system are essential to ensure the educational equity and academic achievement of all students. Historically, students from diverse racial, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds perform lower on multiple indicators of school success than their White counterparts (Howard, 2015; Ladson-Billings, 2000, 2009). Scholars and theorists attribute the low academic performance of students of color to two obtrusive and related factors: the disparity between the demographic profiles of teachers and student, and the absence of multiculturalism and culturally responsive pedagogy in …

Social Work Practitioners Working In End Of Life Care:Learning To Provide Culturally Appropriate Care To Clients Of Middle Eastern Descent, Laura Shafica Meiki Jan 2017

Social Work Practitioners Working In End Of Life Care:Learning To Provide Culturally Appropriate Care To Clients Of Middle Eastern Descent, Laura Shafica Meiki

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study utilized an interpretive qualitative methodological approach to learn about the experiences of individuals with a Master of Social Work degree (MSWs) working in end-of-life (EOL) care with patients of Middle Eastern descent and their families. Specifically, it examined (1) how a sample of social workers obtained the skills necessary to provide culturally appropriate EOL care to clients and families of Middle Eastern descent; (2) the common intervention strategies social workers employ while providing this care; and (3) the recommendations they offer to others who anticipate encountering this population in their own practice. Data collection consisted of in-depth, semi-structured …

Partisanship, Ideology, And The Sorting Of The American Mass Public, Nicholas T. Davis Jan 2017

Partisanship, Ideology, And The Sorting Of The American Mass Public, Nicholas T. Davis

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is a story about the divisions that characterize the mass public. Specifically, it explores how Americans think about politics, and, in particular, how citizens connect their attitudes, beliefs, and, vitally, ideological identity to their partisan affiliation—a phenomenon known as sorting. Practically, this project proceeds in two parts. In Part 1, I investigate the nature of partisan sorting in the mass public. Chapter 2 reviews the extant scholarly literature regarding partisanship and ideology, or the raw materials of sorting. Drawing on this research, I operationalize two types of sorting in Chapter 3 and compare how different measurement protocols affect …

Influences Of Perceived Social Network Structure Characteristics On College Student's Perceptions Of Social Capital Value And Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy, Troy Autin Jan 2017

Influences Of Perceived Social Network Structure Characteristics On College Student's Perceptions Of Social Capital Value And Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy, Troy Autin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The collective group of resources that are accessible to an individual because of people within his/her social network is known as social capital. Social capital becomes more valuable when an individual sees that it can help with goal achievement. This is especially true with college-aged students who are deciding on academic major, career path and if should persist or dropout. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of social network characteristics on the perceived social capital value (SCV) and career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) among freshman college students enrolled at a research university. This present study examined how …

Wom Or Ewom, Is There A Difference?: An Extension Of The Social Communication Theory To Consumer Purchase Related Attitudes, Mcdowell Porter Jan 2017

Wom Or Ewom, Is There A Difference?: An Extension Of The Social Communication Theory To Consumer Purchase Related Attitudes, Mcdowell Porter

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

While traditional word of mouth (WOM) and electronic word of mouth (eWOM) have both been shown to highly impact consumer behavior, there is a deficit in our knowledge of how they compare to one another. My dissertation research addresses the lack of empirical studies that compare WOM promotion in the form of face-to-face interaction to eWOM promotion in the form of computer-mediated communication, especially using Web 2.0 technologies. This research tests the assumption that WOM is superior to eWOM and, if so, how to extend eWOM to improve its performance against WOM. Essay One introduces a proposed conceptual framework to …

A Vast Injustice: The Public Debate And Legislative Battle Over Compulsory Eugenic Sterilization In Louisiana, 1924 -- 1932, Adelaide Hair Barr Jan 2017

A Vast Injustice: The Public Debate And Legislative Battle Over Compulsory Eugenic Sterilization In Louisiana, 1924 -- 1932, Adelaide Hair Barr

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

From 1924 to 1932, Louisiana lawmakers considered five bills that would have granted superintendents of state institutions and some private hospitals the authority to forcibly sterilize their patients. Based on similar legislation passed in thirty-six other states, the bills cited eugenics as evidence that stripping these patients of their ability to reproduce would prevent the conditions such as feeblemindedness from passing on to the next generation. Although none of the bills passed both houses of the Louisiana legislature, a couple of them came dangerously close to becoming law. The debate among legislators, professionals, and social reformers provides a greater understanding …

The Rhetoric Of Hospitality: Conditions Of Death In America, Margaret Anne Callahan Jan 2017

The Rhetoric Of Hospitality: Conditions Of Death In America, Margaret Anne Callahan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Right of Hospitality: Conditions of Death in America calls Western biomedicine’s approach to death into question. Death unifies all human experiences and is always possible, despite the human tendency to deny its existence and, instead, orient the self towards a futurity that is always out of reach. This project investigates the structures influencing how death in America occurs, and traces the roots of Western culture’s rejection of death to the execution by hemlock of Socrates’ immortalized in the Phaedo. Western biomedicine’s institutionalization of medicine requires that both patients and doctors enter into imbalanced hospitable relationships, and these pressures, along …

Educational Apps In The Blended Learning Classroom: Bringing Inquiry-Based Learning Into The Mix, Todd Cherner, Alex Fegely

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

With schools investing heavily in mobile technologies and emphasizing blended learning lessons, teachers are being required to create learning experiences that utilize these technologies to further prepare secondary students for college and the workforce. In this article, the authors first present a brief vignette intended to be representative of the emotions and pressures facing teachers as they prepare to teach with these new technologies. Next, the authors provide a framework teachers can use to create app-based lessons, which are lessons that use multiple apps to engage students in an inquiry-based learning experience. To provide further support, the authors include two …

Ethical Bedrock Under A Changing Negotiation Landscape, Kevin Gibson Jan 2017

Ethical Bedrock Under A Changing Negotiation Landscape, Kevin Gibson

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Editors' Note: Your dilemmas as a negotiator fall into two basic sets, “what’s possible?” and “what's right?” The first is treated by many chapters in this book. Here, from his philosopher's background, Gibson writes about the influence of morality on negotiations, and how we can think more clearly about what's the right thing to do. This chapter should be read in conjunction with Carrie-Meadow’s chapter on The Morality of Compromise.

Correlates Of Mmpi-2-Rf Scale Scores Among College Students, Kevin R. Myers Jan 2017

Correlates Of Mmpi-2-Rf Scale Scores Among College Students, Kevin R. Myers

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous studies have suggested that both the MMPI and MMPI-2 have a history of overpathologizing older adolescents and young adults. The MMPI-2-RF, published in 2008, continues to grow in popularity and use among an increasing number of psychologists. The MMIP-2-RF differs from its predecessors in several ways, including not only the scales that comprise the instrument, but also the methods by which the test was constructed. Therefore, one cannot rely on previous research conducted on the MMPI and MMPI-2 when talking about elevated scale interpretations. The present study examined associations between MMPI-2-RF T scale score elevations and GPA, FSIQ, treatment …

Do Direct Behavior Rating-Single Item Scales (Dbr-Sis) Help Students With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Self-Regulate?, Regina M. Hildenbrand-Moore Jan 2017

Do Direct Behavior Rating-Single Item Scales (Dbr-Sis) Help Students With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Self-Regulate?, Regina M. Hildenbrand-Moore

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As accountability of teachers has been pushed to the forefront, it has been speculated that tolerance for students with behavior problems will dissipate (Menzies & Lane, 2011). Strategies that are efficient and effective are needed to help monitor behavior change and to help students learn to regulate their behavior. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most common disorder of self-regulation (Barkley, 1997). An estimated three million children in the United States take medications for attention and behavior problems associated with deficits in self-regulation (Olfson, Marcus, Weissman, & Jensen, 2002). Self-regulation interventions have been proposed as methods that are effective in increasing …

The problems under investigation included (a) Did a directed study of mathematics vocabulary significantly affect student performance levels on standardized mathematical questions? and (b) Did the strategies used in this study significantly affect student performance levels on standardized mathematical questions? The population consisted of eighth-grade pre-algebra students from two different middle schools in southern Indiana. This quasi-experimental study was of a quantitative, repeated-measures design, using a population of approximately 140 eighth-grade students with a control sample of 37 and an experimental sample of 52. I performed a repeated measures ANCOVA to analyze scores from a mathematics vocabulary posttest for each …

Examining The Hormonal Pleiotropy Hypothesis: Malayization Along An Elevational Gradient Can Be Associated With Behavioral, Hormonal And Immunological Differences In Lizards, Ryan Seddon Jan 2017

Examining The Hormonal Pleiotropy Hypothesis: Malayization Along An Elevational Gradient Can Be Associated With Behavioral, Hormonal And Immunological Differences In Lizards, Ryan Seddon

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hormonal pleiotropy describes a suite of hormonally-linked traits. Such hormonal mediation may facilitate or constrain adaptive evolution of individual traits in the suite. Melanization, regulated in part by hormonal signals, can be tightly linked to non-color traits such as aggression, hormones, and immunity. While most studies examine within-population variation, I studied correlates of melanization, comparing both between- and within-population differences of adult male western fence lizards, Sceloporus occidentalis . I compared multiple high- and low-elevation populations in California, where populations are increasingly darker at higher elevations. I examined variation in 1) agonistic behavior of male lizards in response to staged …

Using The Terms Integrative And Distributive Bargaining In The Classroom: Time For Change?, Rishi Batra Jan 2017

Using The Terms Integrative And Distributive Bargaining In The Classroom: Time For Change?, Rishi Batra

Journal of Dispute Resolution

The terms “integrative bargaining” and “distributive bargaining” have been with us in the dispute resolution literature since at least the 1960's, when A Behavioral Theory of Labor Negotiations was first published in 1965 by Richard Walton and Robert McKersie. While the terms were popularized by these two authors, the authors themselves acknowledged the long line of predecessors, including Mary Parker Follett, who led them to promote these categories. Since that time, “integrative” and “distributive” have been with us, and have captured the imagination of scholars, trainers, and practitioners, while remaining popular in the dispute resolution literature today. Despite the proliferation …

Ultimate Concern And Finitude: Schelling’S Philosophy Of Religion And Paul Tillich’S Systematic Theology, Michael Vater Jan 2017

Ultimate Concern And Finitude: Schelling’S Philosophy Of Religion And Paul Tillich’S Systematic Theology, Michael Vater

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This paper explores Paul Tillich’s use of the Friedrich Schelling’s philosophy in his explorations of the relevance of historical forms of Christian belief to contemporary culture, where human experience is marked by anxiety and guilt, and where the search for ultimate meanings seems to dead-end in meaninglessness. For Tillich as for Schelling, religion points to metaphysics. The only literal or nonsymbolic truth about God is that God is the affirmation of being over against the possibility of nonbeing, a divine Yes that is an overcoming of a prior No or self-inclusion. The ambiguity of existence as current human beings experience …

The Effect Of Demographic And Clinical Factors On The Performance Of The Abbreviated Scoring Algorithm For The Baby And Infant Screen For Children With Autism Traits, Paige Elizabeth Cervantes Jan 2017

The Effect Of Demographic And Clinical Factors On The Performance Of The Abbreviated Scoring Algorithm For The Baby And Infant Screen For Children With Autism Traits, Paige Elizabeth Cervantes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interaction and social communication as well as the presence of restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, or activities (RRBIs; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). Individuals with ASD experience lifelong and pervasive impairments across many domains of functioning. Early identification of ASD is imperative as earlier intervention is associated with greater gains in numerous areas. In regards to early identification efforts, routine screening is important. However, screening often fails to be conducted within early childhood care settings. To encourage greater rates of screening by offering a …

The Dark Side Of Self-Regulation, Benjamin P. Edwards Jan 2017

The Dark Side Of Self-Regulation, Benjamin P. Edwards

Scholarly Works

The financial services industry indirectly regulates itself through little discussed, scandal-prone, and structurally-entrenched self-regulatory organizations. FINRA, the most prominent of these self-regulatory organizations, makes regulations and sets enforcement policy that directly affect public welfare. As with other self-regulatory organizations, FINRA's structure poses a continual risk that industry members will subvert its processes to act like a cartel, promoting industry interests at the expense of the public and contributing to the excessive rents collected by financial intermediaries. Although this dark side to self-regulation poses a constant danger, structural reforms may increase the likelihood that FINRA and other self-regulatory organizations will take …

An Examination Of Various Factors (Age, Gender, Family Status, Marital Status, And Work Engagement) And Their Relationship To Longevity, Attendance, And Job Performance Of Custodial Staff At A Large Public University, Celena Raquel Trahan Jan 2017

An Examination Of Various Factors (Age, Gender, Family Status, Marital Status, And Work Engagement) And Their Relationship To Longevity, Attendance, And Job Performance Of Custodial Staff At A Large Public University, Celena Raquel Trahan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the various factors (age, gender, family status, marital status, and work engagement) and their relationships between longevity of employment tenure, attendance, and job performance of custodial staff at a large, public university. Correlation analyses, univariate simple linear regressions, and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to analyze the data from 259 custodial employees. Results showed that longevity was influenced by age and marital status. Younger individuals had lower longevity and older individuals had higher longevity. The widowed marital status group had significantly higher longevity than the single and married groups. Attendance was …
