Longitudinal Predictors Of Diabetic Ketoacidosis Hospitalizations And Hemoglobin A1c: Examining Adaptation To Type-1 Diabetes In Adolescents, Katherine Semenkovich Nov 2017

Longitudinal Predictors Of Diabetic Ketoacidosis Hospitalizations And Hemoglobin A1c: Examining Adaptation To Type-1 Diabetes In Adolescents, Katherine Semenkovich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) and elevated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in youth with type-1 diabetes (T1D) can result in significant morbidity and mortality. Elucidating the risk factors for poor glycemic control and DKA hospitalizations is crucial for the refinement and development of prevention and treatment efforts. Based on a conceptual framework, this study used path analysis to evaluate individual and family characteristics, psychosocial responses, and individual and family responses that prospectively predict number of DKA hospitalizations and HbA1c approximately one year after assessment, accounting for socio-demographics. 174 Youth 12-18 years old with T1D (M = 14.78, SD = 1.65) and their caregivers …

Race And Gender Differences In The Need For Postsecondary Mathematics Remediation, Scotty Glen Houston Nov 2017

Race And Gender Differences In The Need For Postsecondary Mathematics Remediation, Scotty Glen Houston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Remedial education in postsecondary institutions has been a topic of discussion for policymakers and educators for many years. The subject where most of the remediation occurs is mathematics. A population skilled in mathematics is necessary for many of the current job openings, and many more jobs to come, as countless occupations are becoming even more technologically sophisticated. Researchers have determined that upwards of sixty to seventy percent of incoming students in college and universities need math remediation, and factors reanging from family income, race and gender to admissions test scores and grade point average have been shown to influence remedial …

Processing Motion: Using Code To Teach Newtonian Physics, M. Ryan Massey Nov 2017

Processing Motion: Using Code To Teach Newtonian Physics, M. Ryan Massey

Dissertations

Prior to instruction, students often possess a common-sense view of motion, which is inconsistent with Newtonian physics. Effective physics lessons therefore involve conceptual change. To provide a theoretical explanation for concepts and how they change, the triangulation model brings together key attributes of prototypes, exemplars, theories, Bayesian learning, ontological categories, and the causal model theory. The triangulation model provides a theoretical rationale for why coding is a viable method for physics instruction. As an experiment, thirty-two adolescent students participated in summer coding academies to learn how to design Newtonian simulations. Conceptual and attitudinal data was collected using the Force Concept …

An Exploration Of First-Year Students’ Engagement In A Postsecondary Common Reading Program, Kali L. Morgan Nov 2017

An Exploration Of First-Year Students’ Engagement In A Postsecondary Common Reading Program, Kali L. Morgan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study used the narrative engagement framework from the communication discipline to explore first-year college students’ engagement in common reading program events and activities, engagement with the text’s narrative, and students’ affirmation of attitudes espoused in the text’s narrative. A total of 325 first-year students enrolled at Texas State University responded to a web-based survey of about their experiences with the 2016-2017 Common Reading Program book, What It Is Like to Go To War (Marlantes, 2011). The book, a memoir of Marlantes’ experiences as a Marine Lieutenant during the Vietnam War, features scholarly reflections on the nature of war and …

Re:Act A Three-Way Communication Interactive Design System For School-Family Partnerships, Yoon Jin Lee Nov 2017

Re:Act A Three-Way Communication Interactive Design System For School-Family Partnerships, Yoon Jin Lee

Theses

Using interaction design to create conversation to help create a personalized learning environment in and out of elementary classrooms for achieving students’ academic and mental success from a three-way communication between teachers, students, and parents

Many elementary school teachers encounter problems interacting with each student individually. Also, many parents are losing chances to track their child’s development and achievement closely in both physical and mental perspectives because of their busy schedules. There are several web and mobile applications to assist with these issues, but most of those are too focused on grading students’ positive and negative behavior and two-way communication …

Indonesian Students' Perceptions Of Written Feedback In Second Language Writing, Rahmah Fithriani Nov 2017

Indonesian Students' Perceptions Of Written Feedback In Second Language Writing, Rahmah Fithriani

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Grounded in sociocultural theory, written feedback activities in second language (L2) writing provide the social interactions that help learners develop their psychical functions within the zone of proximal development (ZPD) as they co-construct knowledge with teachers and peers through guided learning (De Guerrero & Villamil, 2000). Written feedback can also help student writers improve their writing proficiency, including organization of their texts and awareness of the mechanics of the language necessary for successful communication of the intended message (Chandler, 2003; Ferris, 2006; Jahin, 2012; Kamimura, 2006).

Regarding the eminence of feedback in L2 writing, a large body of research has …

It's More Than Self-Presentation: Mum Effects Can Reflect Private Discomfort And Concern For The Recipient, Jayson L. Dibble Nov 2017

It's More Than Self-Presentation: Mum Effects Can Reflect Private Discomfort And Concern For The Recipient, Jayson L. Dibble

Faculty Publications

Is the reluctance to share bad news (i.e., the MUM effect) motivated more by a public display or private concern, and does it benefit mainly the messenger or the recipient? An experiment (N = 309) that crossed good/bad news with three communication channels (face to face, text messaging, email) revealed that messenger reluctance was greatest under conditions of bad news and did not vary based on channel through which the recipient contacted the messenger. In contrast with earlier work, this MUM effect was more consistent with a private fear of distressing the recipient. Theoretical implications and limitations are discussed.

Participatory Community Action Research In Homeless Shelters: Utilization Of Service-Learning Pedagogy In Research And Advocacy, Roger N. Reeb, Charles Hunt, Sara Wetter, Cassandra Hartman Nov 2017

Participatory Community Action Research In Homeless Shelters: Utilization Of Service-Learning Pedagogy In Research And Advocacy, Roger N. Reeb, Charles Hunt, Sara Wetter, Cassandra Hartman

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Homelessness will be framed as a human rights issue, with reference to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (e.g., Articles 25 and 27).

A participatory action research project (sustained by service-learning pedagogy) in homeless shelters will be described. In the shelters, we implement Behavioral Activation, which is a strategy to (a) transform the shelter environment; (b) empower shelter guests; (c) enhance their coping; and (d) expand their opportunities for overcoming obstacles associated with homelessness. We will present both quantitative outcomes (using validated psychometric measures) and qualitative outcomes (examining written comments of guests using grounded theory methodology) for shelter guests, including …

Doing Greater Good, While Doing No Individual Harm: A Public Health Approach To Human Trafficking Using A Human Rights-Centered Model, Patrick L. Kerr, Rachel Dash Nov 2017

Doing Greater Good, While Doing No Individual Harm: A Public Health Approach To Human Trafficking Using A Human Rights-Centered Model, Patrick L. Kerr, Rachel Dash

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Human trafficking (i.e., modern slavery) includes myriad forms of sex and labor trafficking. Widely ranging estimates of the prevalence of human trafficking are commonly cited; at the same time, accurate data on these phenomena remain elusive, and assumptions rather than empirical evidence about the nature, targets, and proliferation of trafficking often dominate public policy discourse.

In this paper, we describe the ways in which this lack of accurate data on basic prevalence rates has led to key limitations in anti-trafficking work. First, this lack of data prevents a clear understanding of the problem of trafficking. Second, this deficit limits our …

Testing Northern Bobwhite Reintroduction Techniques In The Northern Edge Of Their Range, William Macaluso, Christopher K. Williams, Theron M. Terhune Ii Nov 2017

Testing Northern Bobwhite Reintroduction Techniques In The Northern Edge Of Their Range, William Macaluso, Christopher K. Williams, Theron M. Terhune Ii

National Quail Symposium Proceedings

Pen-rearing young frequently fails as a reintroduction technique in game birds because of low postrelease survival rates in the wild. This may be caused by a combination of poor genetics from domestication, unhealthy birds, birds that do not exhibit wild behavior, or birds that are unfamiliar with their surroundings after hard releases. Recent research suggests that parent-rearing, involving pre- and posthatch imprinting of wild-strain northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) chicks by adults, may be a viable option for restoring populations. Imprinting potentially causes reintroduced birds to exhibit more natural behavior. We tested this method against a slightly modified traditional …

Experiential Learning Through The Health & Wellness Peer Education Program, Matthew T. Allen, Christian R. Barefield

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The Health and Wellness Peer Education program was established on the Murray State University campus during the Fall 2016 semester. The purpose of this program is to empower and engage the campus community through outreach and advocacy to help make Murray State a healthier and safer environment for all students. The National Peer Educator Study (2011) found numerous benefits to having peer educator programs on college campuses. One of those benefits is that undergraduate peers are the single most potent source of influence on undergraduate student's affective and cognitive growth and development. Students often feel more comfortable when learning and …

Who Is A Nuisance? Criminal Activity Nuisance Ordinances In Ohio, Joseph Mead, Megan Hatch, J. Rosie Tighe, Marissa Pappas, Kristi Andrasik, Elizabeth Bonham

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Criminal Activity Nuisance Ordinances (CANOs) are local laws found in thousands of cities throughout the country which penalize property owners if repeated incidents of criminal activity related to their property occur over a set period of time (typically, 12 months). Nearly 50 cities in Ohio have CANOs, including more than 20 in Northeast Ohio.

Drawing on extensive public records from a sample of Northeast Ohio cities, this report offers a snapshot of CANOs and how they are being used.
• CANOs disproportionately impact renters, people using housing vouchers, and people of color.
• Race and class stereotypes surface in public …

Narrativized Ethics And Hiroshima: Harry S. Truman, Homer, And Aeschylus, Michael Palencia-Roth Nov 2017

Narrativized Ethics And Hiroshima: Harry S. Truman, Homer, And Aeschylus, Michael Palencia-Roth

Comparative Civilizations Review

Discussions of the atomic bomb and Hiroshima have to be deeply troubling for anyone. The natural inclination is to turn one’s eyes away or to remain silent. Avoidance and silence, however, were not valid options immediately after the Second World War and are not valid options today. The decision – or decisions, for there were many – to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and later Nagasaki raises issues of profound importance for the human community. It compels us to ask who we are as individuals and as members of a society engaged in actions with such devastating consequences. We …

Affirming Strengths-Based Models Of Practice, Trevor G. Gates, Brian Kelly Nov 2017

Affirming Strengths-Based Models Of Practice, Trevor G. Gates, Brian Kelly

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Affirming and strengths- based practice with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals and communities started to become more mainstream in the 1970s and 1980s and continues today. Whereas stigmatization of LGBTQ individuals and communities was once the accepted norm, most mainstream professional organizations in social work and allied helping professions today treat LGBTQ identity as part of the normal spectrum of human experience and support affirming and strengths- based models of practice with LGBTQ communities (American Counseling Association, 2013; American Psychological Association [APA], 2008; Council on Social Work Education [CSWE], 2015; National Association of Social Workers, 2005). Practice With The Gay Male Community, Michael P. Dentato Phd, Msw, Tyler M. Argüello, Courtney Wilson Nov 2017

Practice With The Gay Male Community, Michael P. Dentato Phd, Msw, Tyler M. Argüello, Courtney Wilson

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Understanding the complex needs of the unique and widely diverse gay male community underscores the importance of practitioners to robustly examine the wide array of sociocultural, lifespan, health and mental health factors. While gay men are a subpopulation of the broader lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community, practitioners should realize that they have unique needs associated with their sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and gender expression sometimes similar to their LBTQ counterparts but often separate from factors that impact LBTQ individuals. In the same fashion, while gay men may encounter similar life challenges as their nongay counterparts separate …
