Resuscitated Indeed: Paul And The Resurrection Age, Christopher Paul Davis
Resuscitated Indeed: Paul And The Resurrection Age, Christopher Paul Davis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study seeks to uncover a link between the Second Temple and patristic material as it relates to the resurrection. The methodology employed here is a diachronic interconceptual analysis. After surveying this material Paul's discussion of the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15 is then addressed. Given the surrounding milieu in which Paul was operating and the way some Fathers understood the resurrection (via Paul's writings), it is possible that Paul was not trying to discuss an individual resurrection. Instead, he was speaking of a resurrection in which the physical raising of the body is but one step. The terminology utilized …
A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Of Novice Elementary Teachers' Perceived Ability To Implement The North Carolina Multi-Tiered System Of Support With Fidelity, Amy Jackson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to gain a deeper understanding of novice elementary teachers’ perceived ability to implement the North Carolina Multi-Tiered System of Support (NC MTSS) model with fidelity in a suburban North Carolina school district. For the purposes of this research, fidelity was generally defined as the effective application of the tenets of NC MTSS according to evidence-based best practices as well as federal, state, and local policy (Hill, King, Lemons, & Partanen, 2012). Conducted under the leadership of Dr. Frank Bailey, this study sought to determine the extent to which a sample of 12 …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this narrative study was to describe the life history of an adolescent survivor of an abusive head trauma in the Southeastern United States. Abusive head trauma is a form of inflicted brain injury, often occurring because of violence in the form of shaking or impact to the head of an infant under the age of two years old (Chevignard & Lind, 2014). Life history is defined as a first-hand account to convey understanding of a life. The primary participant was a 19-year-old, Caucasian female survivor of an abusive head trauma that occurred when she was five months …

An Examination Of The Influence Of Social Physique Anxiety On Effort And Exercise Participation In College Students, Trellony M. Irwin
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether an individual’s perception of others influenced exercise participation and effort in women and men participants involved in exercise classes in a campus recreation facility. The study consists of a survey that utilizes the Social Physique Anxiety Scale, the Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) Scale, and demographic information. Results revealed that participants’ social physique anxiety accounted for roughly 30% of the variance in self-reported physical activity. However, when it came to participant effort during the group exercise classes, there was only roughly 2% variance between social physique anxiety and RPE. Further, the …
Legal Punishment As Civil Ritual: Making Cultural Sense Of Harsh Punishment, Professor Spearit
Legal Punishment As Civil Ritual: Making Cultural Sense Of Harsh Punishment, Professor Spearit
The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy
This article is an excerpt American Prisons: A Critical Primer on Culture and Conversion to Islam. The central aim of this chapter is to examine the post-civil rights push toward harsh punishment through the cultural lens of ritual. The United States is one of the most punitive countries on the planet--the country is the world leader in imprisonment and is one of the top five that executes capital defendants. However, determining the catalysts of this turn to harsh punishment has proved vexing. Scholars have adequately explained how the end of the welfare state, followed by a proliferation of drug laws, …

Report On The Texas Legislature, 85th Session: An Urban Perspective-Criminal Justice Edition, Sarah R. Guidry, Zahra Buck Whitfield, Amber K. Walker, Marshaun Williams, Grady Paris
The Bridge: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Legal & Social Policy
In Texas, the legislature meets every 2 years and at the end of a regular legislative session, hundreds of passed bills will have been sent to the governor for approval. The large number of bills and the wide range of topics they cover can make it difficult to gain an understanding of all the new laws that were passed. At the close of each legislative session the Earl Carl Institute publishes, for the benefit of its constituents, highlights from the session in a bi-annual legislative report. In this year’s publication entitled Report on the Texas Legislature, 85th Session: An Urban …

“What You See Is What You Get: The Artifice Of Insight”: A Conversation Between R. Luke Dubois And Anne Collins Goodyear, Anne C. Goodyear
Artl@s Bulletin
The metaphorical relationship between sight and knowledge has long been recognized: the double-entendre of “illumination” promises both light and understanding; “I see” signifies that one “gets it” intellectually. This conversation between R. Luke DuBois and Anne Collins Goodyear addresses how data accrues meaning through pictorial structures that represent it. An artist, DuBois has consistently played with conventions for depicting information visually, revealing the intersections between data and desire they represent. Reexamining the interfaces through which we view the world, DuBois and Goodyear consider what our filters threaten to hide.

Challenging Elementary Learners With Programmable Robots During Free Play And Direct Instruction, Kimberly S. Mccoy-Parker, Lindsey N. Paull, Audrey C. Rule, Sarah E. Montgomery
Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions
Computer programming skills are important to many current careers; teaching robot coding to elementary students can start a positive foundation for technological careers, develop problem-solving skills, and growth mindsets. This study, through a repeated measures design involving students in two classrooms at two widelyseparated grade levels (first graders aged 6-7 years and fifth graders aged 10-11 years), determined if allowing students to challenge themselves with coding exercises in the experimental condition resulted in greater learning and more positive attitudes than a more structured set of exercises provided by the teacher in the control condition. Background instruction in coding and using …

Cinematherapy In Gifted Education Identity Development: Integrating The Arts Through Stem-Themed Movies, Timothy C. Kangas, Michelle Cook, Audrey C. Rule
Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions
Gifted students, because of their advanced development compared to peers, have emotional needs that require differentiated education programs. Asynchronous social and emotional development of gifted students often leads to identity issues. Cinematherapy can be used to help gifted students explore their identities through analysis of the actions of gifted characters in films. This practical article suggests STEM-themed movies with characters facing challenges useful for gifted student identity development. The Autonomous Learners Model is used to classify gifted learners in the movies to assist teachers in matching movies to the needs of gifted learners. Tables of STEM-themed movies with gifted characters …

Range-Based Volatility, Expected Stock Returns, And The Low Volatility Anomaly, Benjamin M. Blau, Ryan J. Whitby
Range-Based Volatility, Expected Stock Returns, And The Low Volatility Anomaly, Benjamin M. Blau, Ryan J. Whitby
Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
One of the foundations of financial economics is the idea that rational investors will discount stocks with more risk (volatility), which will result in a positive relation between risk and future returns. However, the empirical evidence is mixed when determining how volatility is related to future returns. In this paper, we examine this relation using a range-based measure of volatility, which is shown to be theoretically, numerically, and empirically superior to other measures of volatility. In a variety of tests, we find that range-based volatility is negatively associated with expected stock returns. These results are robust to time-series multifactor models …

This paper aims to determine how relationship quality can influence company performance in the business-to-business setting of the automotive wholesalers and car dealers. Building on prior research and the results of focus study, we propose relationship quality as a higher construct comprising trust, respect, openness and commitment. The mail survey method was chosen for data collection and the studies were carried out in Poland and Brazil. The results show coexistence of a high level of relationship quality and very good company performance, both in Poland and Brazil, however the entities in Poland assess the quality of the relationship significantly higher …
The Effect Of Telling Lies On Belief In The Truth, Danielle C. Polage
The Effect Of Telling Lies On Belief In The Truth, Danielle C. Polage
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
The current study looks at the effect of telling lies, in contrast to simply planning lies, on participants’ belief in the truth. Participants planned and told a lie, planned to tell a lie but didn’t tell it, told an unplanned lie, or neither planned nor told a lie (control) about events that did not actually happen to them. Participants attempted to convince researchers that all of the stories told were true. Results show that telling a lie plays a more important role in inflating belief scores than simply preparing the script of a lie. Cognitive dissonance may lead to motivated …

Multilingualism And Multiculturalism: Opinions From Spanish-Speaking English Learners From Mexico, Central America, And South America, Cailey Catherine Moe
Dissertations and Theses
Within the population of adult English-language learners in the United States, the largest portion is comprised of Spanish speakers from Mexico and Central and South America. At the same time, Spanish is the second-most commonly spoken language in the U.S., and an increasing presence in U.S. media and culture. This puts English learners from this demographic in a unique position with respect to language and culture acquisition and the experience of working towards their goals within U.S. society at large.
The purpose of this study is to explore motivations and beliefs about language and culture held by a small number …
Drinking During The Week? Alcohol And Religion Among College Students, Angelica Maria Bradley, Daniel P. Nadler, Michael T. Miller
Drinking During The Week? Alcohol And Religion Among College Students, Angelica Maria Bradley, Daniel P. Nadler, Michael T. Miller
New York Journal of Student Affairs
Alcohol use among college students has been correlated with academic performance, major choice, and risky behaviors, such as impaired driving and high-risk sexual encounters. As college students matriculate, they learn to make decisions about who they are now, and who they will become in the future; decisions that include choices about religion. The study explored the differences in religious self-identification and alcohol use among students who identified themselves as unsure of their religious beliefs, those who were spiritual, and those who were religious; results found that students who self-identified as religious were less likely to drink alcohol within the past …
Bridging The Psychic Distance Through Diaspora Networks: The Case Of Polish Firms In Brazil, Aleksandra Wąsowska
Bridging The Psychic Distance Through Diaspora Networks: The Case Of Polish Firms In Brazil, Aleksandra Wąsowska
European Management Studies

A Multilevel Model Of Minority Director Participation Linking Board Diversity And Firm Performance, Christopher S. Tuggle, David G. Sirmon, Leonard Bierman, A. Erin Bass
Management Faculty Publications
A board’s work is largely dependent on the collective contributions of individual directors; thus, greater board diversity, with increased knowledge complementarity, should encourage firm performance. However, empirical evidence of a board diversity/firm performance relationship is weak and inconsistent. We address this issue theoretically and empirically by moving from a monolithic, compositional view of board diversity to a multi-level approach. We argue that the realization of diversity benefits is likely dependent on individual and board processes that help transform the potential value of diverse directors into realized board and firm benefits. Drawing from the boards and team diversity literatures, we develop …
