Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Stroke is the second leading cause of death. Depressive disorder is characterized by period of sad mood and anhedonia occurring for two consecutive weeks. Among stroke survivors, the consequence of physical and psychological changes can be devastating. One of those psychological changes is post-stroke depression (PSD). Stroke itself has debilitating morbidity and superimposed PSD further decreases the quality of life of patients and impairs recovery. This study leads us to know the magnitude of post stroke depression.

Epidemiological Data Of Neurological Disorders In Pakistan And Neighboring Countries: A Review, Ghulam Hussain, Azhar Rasul, Haseeb Anwar, Muhammad Umar Sohail, Syed Kashif Shahid Kamran, Shahid Mahmood Baig, Asghar Shabbir, Javed Iqbal
Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Neurological disorders are the impairments of nervous system and are an important and growing cause of morbidity, mortality, and disability. In addition to health costs, those suffering from these conditions are also frequently victimized of stigmatization and discrimination. Stigmatization further minimizes the patients' access to treatment and social activities. These disorders, therefore, require special attention particularly in developing countries where unfortunately, the burden of these disorders remains largely unrecognized. Moreover, the burden imposed by such chronic neurological conditions in general can be expected to be particularly devastating in poor populations. These conditions are emerging as severe public health concerns in …

Irish Workplace Behaviour Study, M Hodgins, L Pursell, V Hogan, Et Al
Plymouth Business School
This study replicated the BWBS in Ireland, employing the same questionnaire and sampling methodology, in order to establish the prevalence of negative acts in the workplace in a nationally representative sample of Irish employees. The focus of the study is workplace ill treatment received at least once over the previous two years. Workplace ill treatment takes many forms. Workplace bullying is perhaps the most well researched aspect of workplace ill treatment, and has become the dominant way of conceptualising trouble at work. Workplace bullying is a problem for practitioners, academics, and most significantly, it is a problem for those who …

Newsroom Convergence Of Print And Online Media: A Study Of The Gulf News And Alittihad In The Uae, Ahmed Saddiq Mohamed Mansoori
Philosophy Dissertations
The media industry in the UAE, like elsewhere in the world, is experiencing significant changes due to the innovations brought by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Newsrooms are especially the center of such changes, forcing media owners and managers to recognize that convergence of print and online media is inevitable to sustain their newspapers. This research intends to develop an assessment method to determine how newspapers are performing in a convergent media environment. To investigate the three types of newsroom convergence levels (coordination, cross-media, and full integration); the study develops an assessment model for the ten dimensions of newsroom convergence …

What Aspects Of Emotional Intelligence Help Former Prisoners Make Decisions To Desist Crime?, Craig A. Waleed
Education Doctoral
Making good post-incarceration decisions are important for helping formerly incarcerated individuals avoid a return to prison. This is the first study to look at emotional intelligence (EI) components formerly incarcerated men considered important for post-prison criminal desistance. This study explored six former New York state male prisoner’s individual experiences developing EI competencies, and how those EI skills contributed to their post-release decisions to desist crime. Research participants spent an average 7.5 years in a New York state prison, and have been out of prison and living in the community for an average 3.6 years without recommitting a criminal offense. Research …

How Friendships Between Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Counseling Psychology Doctoral Students Affect Anti-Heterosexist Identity Development, Amber L. Sylvan
How Friendships Between Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Counseling Psychology Doctoral Students Affect Anti-Heterosexist Identity Development, Amber L. Sylvan
Dissertations
As the field of counseling psychology strives to embrace diversity and social justice issues, sexual minority issues have flourished into an active area of study among scholars and an area of focus for LGBT-affirming practitioners. One area of emphasis has been on how heterosexual people develop Anti-Heterosexist Identities. Some studies have noted the importance of friendship as it relates to Anti-Heterosexist Identity Development (Asta & Vacha- Haase, 2012; Duhigg, Rostosky, & Gray, 2010; DiStefano et al., 2000; Gelberg & Chojnacki, 1995; Larson, 2012), however, no known studies have more deeply explored the role of crosssexuality friendships. The purpose of this …

Race And Sexual Orientation Lssues In Graduate Classrooms: How Faculty In Psychology Experience Them Emerging Alongside One Another, Raymond L. Sheets Jr.
Dissertations
The inclusion of sexual orientation and race-related issues into mainstream psychology has gained much needed momentum in recent years. The field of counseling psychology, in particular, has helped fuel this momentum with its appreciation for, and commitment to, developing academic and applied psychologists who attend to an evolving multicultural society. Within the academic environment, faculty members have the responsibility of facilitating student learning in their respective classrooms; this facilitation becomes challenging in the face of emotionally charged topics such as race and sexual orientation. How then do graduate faculty who teach these courses experience race and sexual orientation comingling within …
An Examination Of Behavior Analysts' Treatment Selection Behavior For Escape-Maintained Problem Behavior, Rebecca Eldridge
An Examination Of Behavior Analysts' Treatment Selection Behavior For Escape-Maintained Problem Behavior, Rebecca Eldridge
Dissertations
The advent of functional analysis procedures has helped identify reinforcers for problem behavior; however, the behavior analyst is then faced with the task of selecting an appropriate treatment for problem behavior. When selecting treatments, in addition to behavioral function, behavior analysts also need to consider contextual variables, such as current client repertoires, setting conditions, time and resources of current caregivers, as well as client and caregiver goals (Benazzi, Horner, & Good, 2006). Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) must consider these factors when developing treatment according to their ethical code (Behavior Analyst Certification Board [BACB]’s Professional and Ethical Compliance Code [PECC], …
A Qualitative Investigation Of The Interpersonal Changes White Psychology Trainees Experience During Their Race-Based Learning And Development, Molly K. Beagle
A Qualitative Investigation Of The Interpersonal Changes White Psychology Trainees Experience During Their Race-Based Learning And Development, Molly K. Beagle
Dissertations
The current study expands upon prior research that has explored how white psychology and counseling graduate trainees are impacted by their learning about racism. Prior to this study being conducted, research primarily addressed the psychological impact of learning about racism for white trainees. There was minimal acknowledgment and exploration of how learning about racism impacted the interpersonal aspects of trainees’ lives, such as their relationships and larger social networks. The current study addresses this gap within previous research, with it being the first to have an intentional, exclusive focus on the interpersonal impact of learning about racism. The primary purpose …

Leadership Education Books
Change: A Leader's Perspective represents the culmination of the Change Leadership course taught at Winona State University in the fall term of 2017. Leadership is a broad category with many facets. This book explores the subject and offers students of leadership and aspiring leaders current perspectives on leadership theories, the omnipresence of change, and personal reflections on the course material. Additional thoughts which resonate throughout this text are that leaders influence outcomes and that leadership manifests itself in change, whether by cause or effect.
Working Sex Words, Anita Bernstein
Working Sex Words, Anita Bernstein
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Imagine yourself tasked to speak for a few minutes about legal controls on sex-selling in the United States, or any other country you choose. You need not have thought about the particulars. As someone willing to read a law review article, you have enough to say because sex-selling overlaps with the subject knowledge you already have. Criminal law, contracts, employment law, immigration law, tort law, zoning, commercial law, and intellectual property, among other legal categories, all intersect with this topic. In your brief remarks on how law attempts to mediate the sale and purchase of sex, you have only one …
Victim Participation In Japan, Erik Herber
Victim Participation In Japan, Erik Herber
Washington International Law Journal
In 2008, a victim participation system was introduced in Japan, which enabled crime victims to participate in criminal proceedings. One of the goals of the system was to correct the wrong done to victims due to their lack of previous involvement, thus giving crime victims what they “naturally desire.” Employing Malcolm Feeley’s analytical framework to make sense of planned legal change, this Article shows that the new system emerged against the background of a combination of international trends: victim activism and public perceptions of crime getting out of hand. It finds that for reasons that are not well understood, only …

Introduction Of Videotaping Of Interrogations And The Lessons Of The Imaichi Case: A Case Of Conventional Criminal Justice Policy-Making In Japan, Setsuo Miyazawa, Mari Hirayama
Washington International Law Journal
Malcolm M. Feeley examined cases of criminal justice reform in the United States, where reforms can be conceived and initiated in a very open structure, but implementation of the introduced reforms can be handed over to highly fragmented implementers. The story of mandatory videotaping of interrogations and accompanying changes in Japan demonstrates the reform process at the other end of the scale, where the members of the criminal justice establishment can exert a strong influence even at the conception and initiation stages, and have even stronger control at the implementation and routinization stages. We believe that Feeley’s theoretical framework can …

Deconstructing The Ivorian Vestimentary Traditions: New Fashion, Contemporary Beauty And New Identity In Marguerite Abouet And Clément Oubrerie’S Aya De Yopougon, Richard Oko Ajah, Letitia Egege
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
This paper adopts an eclectic framework of semiotic, postmodern and postcolonial theories to interpret the representations of dressing as an aesthetic activity in Aya de Yopougon 1-3 and to investigate how Yopougon dwellers use their fashion sense to establish both a group identity and a form of everyday resistance. Characters’ bodies are remade, through dressing, to contain emotive qualities and to play symbolic functions with their everyday choice of dress. Their sartorial obsession is supported by psychic inferiority and pop culture; all characters engage in “disciplinary practices” for the clothing culture of their bodies that are ornamented surfaces for display.

Adaptive Mating Memory: Attractiveness And Contextual Effect On The Remembering And Misremembering Of Potential Mates’ Faces, Peter Kay Chai Tay
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Research on adaptive memory demonstrates that words and objects are remembered better if they are evaluated in relation to their survival or reproductive fitness value. Using the error management theory as a framework to elucidate memory biases emerging from adaptive costs and benefits, the present research examined if memory is enhanced for faces of potential mates (i.e., opposite sex individuals) in an ancestral context when the facial attractiveness and the observer’s short-term mating motive were also considered (i.e., Adaptive mating memory). In two studies, participant read scenarios depicting survival threats, mating, or modern environment, and were told to rate a …
Deep Learning In Attention Networks, Hossein Adeli Jelodar
Deep Learning In Attention Networks, Hossein Adeli Jelodar
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Visual attention enables primates to prioritize visual information relevant to an ongoing task for selection and further processing. This ability reflects integration and competition among bottom-up signals at multiple stages of processing along the ventral and dorsal visual pathways in the brain. Top-down modulations bias the signal in these pathways to allow for goal-directed behavior. This dissertation introduces a framework for building Deep Neural Network (DDN) models inspired by the anatomical and functional structure of brain's attention network. Two models are built in this framework and tested on eye-movement behavior during categorical search tasks. The first study presents a model …

Existential Captivation: On The (Im)Possibility Of A Life Lived In Terror, Jessica Ryan Sims
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation explores key concepts in the thought of Aristotle, Martin Heidegger, and Carl Schmitt in order to explain why some victims of violent assault cling to their assailants rather than flee from them. Many psychologists use the term Stockholm Syndrome to explain this surprising phenomenon. They argue that physical assault ultimately causes the victim to revert an infantile, dependent state that in turn makes her cling to whomever is in her immediate vicinity. However, I make the case that this approach fails to recognize the phenomenological root of the problem. What many scientific researchers overlook is the fact that …
Investigating Parental Involvement In Their Childrens Education In A Government Aided Secondary School In Maracha Uganda, Alesi Judith
Investigating Parental Involvement In Their Childrens Education In A Government Aided Secondary School In Maracha Uganda, Alesi Judith
Master of Education
The concept of parental involvement in their children‟s education has been core in enhancing students‟ academic performance and life in general regardless of their socio economic background. Families provide the base upon which the learners are supported in their social, moral, financial, psychological and academic growth which ushers them into great achievements. This study therefore aimed at investigating parental involvement in their children‟s education in a rural secondary school where most parents are of low socio economic status, and how they offer their support both at school and at home. Based on the context of the study, we should acknowledge …

A Retrospective Chart Review Comparing Nutritional Screening Tools (Mna-Sf And Must) In Identifying Malnutrition In Older Adults Admitted To A Hospital In 2016, Elizabeth Schneider
2017 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
There are many factors that contribute toward negative outcomes in the healthcare setting for hospitalized older adults (Tappenden, Quatrara, Parkhurst, Malone, Fanjiang, & Ziegler, 2013). One of these factors includes meeting nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, many cases of malnutrition in patients 65 years and older, who are admitted to the hospital, go unnoticed due to the lack of nutritional screening tool implementation (Tappenden et al., 2013). Therefore, this study looks at two of the most popular nutritional screening tools, the MNA-SF and MUST, to identify malnutrition in older adults with a preexisting diagnosis of either malnutrition or failure to thrive and …

Obesity, Dyspnea On Exertion And Health Related Quality Of Life In Obese Males, Lauren Crane
2017 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Previous research has shown that one in three otherwise healthy obese adults experience dyspnea on exertion (DOE). Both dyspnea and obesity can have a negative influence on a person’s health related quality of life (HRQOL). However, it is unclear if these relationships can be found in otherwise healthy mild-to-moderately obese men. In this study, we examined the relationship between 1) obesity and HRQOL, and 2) dyspnea on exertion (DOE) and HRQOL. A secondary analysis was conducted from the baseline data of an interventional 12-week weight loss study. Volunteers filled out the Medical Outcomes Short Form-36 (SF36) as the measurement for …

2017 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The purpose of this study is to measure effects of exercise environments on stress in premedical and predental students, and how to provide a method that would strive to reduce stress levels in college students. To further understand the different ways stress levels can be reduced, a method was performed to see if exercise environments have an effect on stress in premedical and predental students. Participants took the Perceived Stress Survey Inventory (PSSI) and were then instructed to walk one mile every day for one week at the University of Texas Arlington (UTA) or a park. It was hypothesized by …

Tools Of The Trade: Improving Nurses Ability To Access And Evaluate Research, Phyllis Helms
2017 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
In their daily practice, nurses continuously seek answers to clinical questions. It is critical that they know how to find evidence-based guidelines, standards, and research to guide their care and optimize patient outcomes. However, there are few studies of processes to increase nurses’ ability to find and analyze evidence for practice. Therefore, the purpose of this longitudinal quasi-experimental descriptive study was to measure the effect of an educational project on nurses’ knowledge and frequency of using library database resources to acquire and appraise evidence-based practice (EBP). A secondary purpose was to examine the effects of nurse characteristics (educational background, professional …

Framing Leadership Rhetoric: Exploring Gender (In) Equality In Corporate Training Material, Anna Elizabeth Prieto
Communication Theses - Archive
This study explores gender equality in the workplace using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Two sets of data were analyzed: leadership training and development materials and in-depth interviews. This two-fold method allowed for a holistic approach to analyzing data and made it possible to compare findings from the textual analysis with insights gained from the interviews. This study revealed a lack of attention being devoted to developing and promoting leadership training materials and experiences that acknowledge gender differences and encourage gender equality. It was determined that overall, gender associated rhetoric used in the course titles and descriptions made up barely …

A Review Of Occupation And Impairment Based Assessments Used In Occupational Therapy, Mariana D'Amico
OCCUPATION: A Medium of Inquiry about Health through Occupation
Objective: The objective of this paper was to analyze the psychometrics, efficacy, and usefulness of assessments to measure occupational performance and occupation-based outcomes.
Methodology: Eight Doctor of Occupational Therapy Students at Nova Southeastern University, along with their professor, analyzed and appraised 46 commonly used assessments to discover and explore the assessments’ purposes, theory-bases, psychometric properties, and usefulness as outcome measures.
Results: We found that many high quality assessments exist and meet the standards for validity and reliability. Although some assessments are client-centered and useful, some still require additional research to strengthen their psychometric properties.
Conclusion: Some widely used assessments …
