Spin-Valley Coherent Phases Of The V = 0 Quantum Hall State In Bilayer Graphene, Ganpathy Murthy, Efrat Shimshoni, H. A. Fertig Dec 2017

Spin-Valley Coherent Phases Of The V = 0 Quantum Hall State In Bilayer Graphene, Ganpathy Murthy, Efrat Shimshoni, H. A. Fertig

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Bilayer graphene (BLG) offers a rich platform for broken-symmetry states stabilized by interactions. In this work, we study the phase diagram of BLG in the quantum Hall regime at filling factor ν = 0 within the Hartree-Fock approximation. In the simplest noninteracting situation, this system has eight (nearly) degenerate Landau levels near the Fermi energy, characterized by spin, valley, and orbital quantum numbers. We incorporate in our study two effects not previously considered: (i) the nonperturbative effect of trigonal warping in the single-particle Hamiltonian, and (ii) short-range SU(4) symmetry-breaking interactions that distinguish the energetics of the orbitals. We find within …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations Of Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flow Characteristics Through A Vertical To Horizontal Right Angled Elbow, Aung N. Z., Yuwono T. Dec 2017

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations Of Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flow Characteristics Through A Vertical To Horizontal Right Angled Elbow, Aung N. Z., Yuwono T.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

Having a clear understanding on the phase distribution of gas-liquid two-phase flow through elbow bends is vital in mixing and separation system designs. This paper presents the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and experimental observations of gas-liquid two-phase flow pattern characteristic through a vertical to horizontal right angled (90°) elbow. Experimental observations were conducted in a transparent test section that consisted of a vertical pipe, elbow bend and horizontal pipe with an inside diameter of 0.036 m. The CFD simulations were performed by using a computer software package, FLUENT 6.2. Bubbly flow conditions were created in the vertical test section …

Evaluation Of A Health Education Intervention To Improve Knowledge, Skills, Behavioral Intentions And Resources Associated With Preventable Determinants Of Infant Mortality, Danielle Fastring, Susan Mayfield-Johnson, Janna Madison

Faculty Publications

Mississippi has the highest rate of infant mortality in the nation (9.3 infant deaths for 1,000 live births). A health disparity exists between white infants (6.2) and black infants (13.0). This project reports on the effectiveness of a pilot educational program, Healthy Moms and Healthy Babies, which sought to improve knowledge, skills, behavioral intentions and resources related to preventable determinants of infant mortality. A curriculum was developed and piloted with women who were currently pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant or who had an infant

The Role Of Catalytic Residue PKA On The Hydrolysis/Transglycosylation Partition In Family 3 Β-Glucosidases, Inacrist Geronimo, Christina M. Payne, Mats Sandgren Dec 2017

The Role Of Catalytic Residue PKA On The Hydrolysis/Transglycosylation Partition In Family 3 Β-Glucosidases, Inacrist Geronimo, Christina M. Payne, Mats Sandgren

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

β-Glucosidases (βgls) primarily catalyze the hydrolysis of the terminal glycosidic bond at the non-reducing end of β-glucosides, although glycosidic bond synthesis (called transglycosylation) can also occur in the presence of another acceptor. In the final reaction step, the glucose product or another substrate competes with water for transfer to the glycosyl-enzyme intermediate. The factors governing the balance between the two pathways are not fully known; however, the involvement of ionizable residues in binding and catalysis suggests that their pKa may play a role. Through constant pH molecular dynamics simulations of a glycoside hydrolase Family 3 (GH3) βgl, we …

Daphnia: A Possible Way To Combat A Deadly Amphibian Pathogen, Taylor Thomas Dec 2017

Daphnia: A Possible Way To Combat A Deadly Amphibian Pathogen, Taylor Thomas

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Globally there is a biodiversity crisis, with many groups of species threatened with extinction due to changes in the environment and human impacts. Amphibians are one such group and according to the IUCN, over 30% of amphibians are threatened by extinction. There are many factors have that can explain the decline of amphibians including pollution, habitat loss, climate change and disease. One factor is chytridiomycosis, an emerging infectious disease caused by the chytrid Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. The chytrid enters the keratinized skin of the amphibian and asexually reproduces, where it disrupts host functions, often leading to host death.

Effect Of Aggregate Mineralogy And Concrete Microstructure On Thermal Expansion And Strength Properties Of Concrete, Jinwoo An, S. Sonny Kim, Boo Hyun Nam, Stephan A. Durham Dec 2017

Effect Of Aggregate Mineralogy And Concrete Microstructure On Thermal Expansion And Strength Properties Of Concrete, Jinwoo An, S. Sonny Kim, Boo Hyun Nam, Stephan A. Durham

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Aggregate type and mineralogy are critical factors that influence the engineering properties of concrete. Temperature variations result in internal volume changes could potentially cause a network of micro-cracks leading to a reduction in the concrete's compressive strength. The study specifically studied the effect of the type and mineralogy of fine and coarse aggregates in the normal strength concrete properties. As performance measures, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and compressive strength were tested with concrete specimens containing different types of fine aggregates (manufactured and natural sands) and coarse aggregates (dolomite and granite). Petrographic examinations were then performed to determine the …

Biodegradation Of Nr Latex-Based Materials Via A Carbon Dioxide Evolution Method, Shabinah F. M. S., Hashim M. Y. A. Dec 2017

Biodegradation Of Nr Latex-Based Materials Via A Carbon Dioxide Evolution Method, Shabinah F. M. S., Hashim M. Y. A.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

NR as a natural polymer has biodegradable characteristics and their existence was examined using CO2 evolution methods. The CO2 molecule produced by micro-organism metabolisms in the degradation system was quantified using a conventional acidimetric method. An aerobic system was determined as most suitable condition to be examined under this method. The presence of O2 in the system would help micro-organisms to destabilize the natural polymer. The material of LATZ, HA film and NR gloves showed significant weight loss and were able to produce CO2 evolution curves after 45 days in the biodegradation system compared to synthetic polyisoprene films. Gel permeation …

On 2017 June 8 at 02:01:16.49 UTC, a gravitational-wave (GW) signal from the merger of two stellar-mass black holes was observed by the two Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory detectors with a network signal-to-noise ratio of 13. This system is the lightest black hole binary so far observed, with component masses of 12 +7 -2 M⨀ and 7 +2 -2 M⨀ (90% credible intervals). These lie in the range of measured black hole masses in low-mass X-ray binaries, thus allowing us to compare black holes detected through GWs with electromagnetic observations. The source’s luminosity distance is 340 +140 -140 Mpc, …

Neighborhood Cohesion, Neighborhood Disorder, And Cardiometabolic Risk, Jennifer N. Robinette, Susan T. Charles, Tara Gruenewald Dec 2017

Neighborhood Cohesion, Neighborhood Disorder, And Cardiometabolic Risk, Jennifer N. Robinette, Susan T. Charles, Tara Gruenewald

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Perceptions of neighborhood disorder (trash, vandalism) and cohesion (neighbors trust one another) are related to residents’ health. Affective and behavioral factors have been identified, but often in studies using geographically select samples. We use a nationally representative sample (n = 9032) of United States older adults from the Health and Retirement Study to examine cardiometabolic risk in relation to perceptions of neighborhood cohesion and disorder. Lower cohesion is significantly related to greater cardiometabolic risk in 2006/2008 and predicts greater risk four years later (2010/2012). The longitudinal relation is partially accounted for by anxiety and physical activity.

Emissions Of Organic Compounds From Produced Water Ponds, Seth Lyman Dec 2017

Emissions Of Organic Compounds From Produced Water Ponds, Seth Lyman

Browse all Datasets

We measured fluxes of methane, a suite of non-methane hydrocarbons (C2-C11), light alcohols, and carbon dioxide from oil and gas produced water storage and disposal ponds in Utah (Uinta Basin) and Wyoming (Upper Green River Basin) United States during 2013-2016. In this paper, we discuss the characteristics of produced water composition and air-water fluxes, with a focus on flux chamber measurements. In companion papers, we will (1) report on inverse modeling methods used to estimate emissions from produced water ponds, including comparisons with flux chamber measurements, and (2) discuss the development of mass transfer coefficients to estimate emissions and place …

A New Radio Spectral Line Survey Of Planetary Nebulae: Exploring Radiatively Driven Heating And Chemistry Of Molecular Gas, Jesse Bublitz

Theses

Planetary nebulae contain shells of cold gas and dust whose heating and chemistry is likely driven by UV and X-ray emission from their central stars and from wind-collision-generated shocks. We present the results of a survey of molecular line emissions in the 88 - 235 GHz range from nine nearby (

A Right To Record: An Analysis Of The Legal Issues Surrounding Cell Phone Videos Of Police Violence, Katherine E. Milburn Dec 2017

A Right To Record: An Analysis Of The Legal Issues Surrounding Cell Phone Videos Of Police Violence, Katherine E. Milburn

Theses

Smartphones have become ubiquitous in modern society, increasing the likelihood of being caught on camera. On July 17th, 2014, a cell phone video of Staten Island police officers wrongfully killing Eric Garner reignited a national controversy on the nature of police violence, and set off a wave of citizen-surveillance through cell phones. By reviewing prior 1st and 4th Amendment court cases, I argue that citizens do indeed have a right to record on-duty police officers, and police do not have the right to conduct a warrantless search or seizure of a phone. Although a case involving citizen-surveillance of law enforcement …

Inside And Outside, Dan Xue Dec 2017

Inside And Outside, Dan Xue

Theses

In this thesis, I will focus on sculptural ceramic vessels. I regard the vessel not only as a physical object but also a container carrying memories, imaginations, and emotions. I use the vessel as a metaphor to relate to one person, one object, and one phenomenon, the way I see it.

The thesis aims to explore the connections between what has happened in the past and what is happening now for a fuller understanding of self. Memory is an important subject matter for me. I believe life is not chronological, while the memory of what happened in the past and …

Inferences About The Distribution, Merger Rate, And Evolutionary Processes Of Compact Binaries From Gravitational Wave Observations, Daniel Wysocki Dec 2017

Inferences About The Distribution, Merger Rate, And Evolutionary Processes Of Compact Binaries From Gravitational Wave Observations, Daniel Wysocki

Theses

We are living through the dawn of the era of gravitational wave astronomy. Our first glances through this new window upon the sky has revealed a new population of objects. Since it first began observing in late 2015, the advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) has detected gravitational waves three times, along with an additional strong candidate -- and there shall be orders of magnitude more in the years to come. In all four cases, the waveform's signature is consistent with general relativity's predictions for the merging of two black holes. Through parameter estimation studies, estimates on features such as …

Exploring The Underlying Mechanisms Of Structure Building, Reshma Gouravajhala Dec 2017

Exploring The Underlying Mechanisms Of Structure Building, Reshma Gouravajhala

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Structure building, the ability to build a coherent mental model of any narrative, requires the identification and integration of important parts of that narrative, as well as the suppression of irrelevant details. Critically, while individual differences in structure building have been shown to have important consequences in the classroom, little has been concluded about underlying deficits and causal mechanisms of low structure building ability. In the present study, we tested the theory that an impaired ability to suppress unimportant details is low structure builders’ sole deficit (Gernsbacher, 1990). We presented participants with educationally authentic text materials that offered varying degrees …
