If Trees Could Lobby They Would Be People Too: The Environmental And Cultural Benefits Of Granting Legal Personality To Nature, M. Alexis Volner

Tribal Law Journal

In the Western culture today, the environment is perceived as a source for goods and resources. However, this perspective has resulted in serious environmental degradation and a real threat to our species’ survival. To combat these problems there must be a radical shift in the Western culture’s conception of nature.

The first step in this shift is to recognize the environment as a legal person. The United States should grant legal personality to all publicly owned lands containing sites held sacred by Indigenous peoples and establish a collaborative board to manage the sites to recognize Indigenous cultural rights and encourage …

New Mexico Youth Risk And Resiliency 2015 Survey Results Report: Students With Physical Disabilities, C Fitzgerald, D Green, T Bannerman, L Penaloza

Reports & Documents

Students with disabilities experience numerous challenges and risks, including from bullying and other forms of violence, lower overall physical activity and difficulties stemming from accessibility issues. They are also more prone to a sedentary lifestyle, which can lead to chronic health issues. Students with physical disabilities are more likely to engage in risky behaviors than students without disabilities, and also demonstrate decreased protective factors. In 2015, 11.3% of New Mexico high school students had a physical disability or long-term illness.

New Mexico Youth Risk & Resiliency 2015 Survey Results Report: Housing Instability And Health, C Fitzgerald, T Bannerman, D Green, L Penaloza

Reports & Documents

In 2015, for the first time, the NM-YRRS questionnaire included a question on homelessness, or housing status. The question mirrored the homelessness definition of the McKinney-Vento Act, which is used by the New Mexico Public Education Department to identify homeless students. For the purposes of this report, students identified as homeless will be referred to as students in unstable housing. Students living in unstable housing were at significantly increased risk for facing violence, using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, suicidal behaviors and other mental health issues and other serious challenges.

Youth who drink alcohol before age 15 are six times more likely to develop alcohol dependence or abuse later in life than those who begin drinking at age 21 or older. Binge drinking (5 or more drinks on a single occasion) accounts for about 90% of the alcohol consumed by youth 12–20 years of age in the United States. The New Mexico Youth Risk & Resiliency Survey (NM-YRRS) includes questions about alcohol use, access, attitudes, and behaviors as well as protective (resiliency) factors that can …

Challenging Hegemonic Gender Norms Through Stem Education In Nepal, Todd Wallenius, Barbara Grossman-Thompson Jan 2017

Challenging Hegemonic Gender Norms Through Stem Education In Nepal, Todd Wallenius, Barbara Grossman-Thompson

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Aid and development have long targeted schooling as a primary site of intervention in Nepal. However, scant research has explored perceptions of development among educators themselves. This study considers how Nepali educators understand themselves as beneficiaries and agents of development within the context of a U.S. Department of State funded education program. Further, the paper considers how educators understand hegemonic gender norms, and how their participation in this program may challenge them. The study suggests that the program - as part of larger development initiatives - is a location and context through which and educators identities are negotiated in Nepal.

© 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Many e-commerce websites allow customers to provide reviews that reflect their experiences and opinions about the business's products or services. Such published reviews potentially benefit the business's reputation, improve both current and future customers' trust in the business, and accordingly improve the business. Negative reviews can inform the merchant of issues that, when addressed, also improve the business. However, when reviews reflect negative experiences and the merchant fails to respond, the business faces potential loss of reputation, trust, and damage. We present the Sentiminder system that identifies reviews with negative sentiment, organizes …

Structural Change And Industrial Policy: A Case Study Of Ethiopia’S Leather Sector, Michael Mbate Jan 2017

Structural Change And Industrial Policy: A Case Study Of Ethiopia’S Leather Sector, Michael Mbate

Journal of African Trade

Recent empirical evidence underscores the vital role of industrial development in fostering structural change and promoting a country's long-run development objectives. Devising sound industrial policy institutions emerges as a key policy option to promote the reallocation of human, physical and financial resources to high value added sectors of the economy. This paper examines the rationale for industrial policy, why it has been ineffective in most African countries and what policy lessons should be distilled from past experiences. Using the Ethiopian leather and leather product sector, it examines how industrial policies are formulated and implemented in practice. The paper concludes by …

Transforming Societies After Violence: Conceptualizing And Contextualizing Transitional Justice In Africa, Jennifer Moore

Faculty Book Display Case

This chapter first analyses three facets of transitional justice -- the criminal-retributive, the historical-reconciliative, and the social-redistributive -- and identifies some of the synergies and tensions among them. The second section shines a spotlight on the post-independence, conflict, and post-conflict histories of Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Burundi, generally characterizing their distinct approaches to transitional justice, and the differing degrees of attention they devote to the various strands of justice. For each of the three countries, the text points to the work of a community-based civil society organization, and spotlights its approach to post-conflict transition in that country. The final section …
