2018 Synod Of Bishops On The Youth: An Overview, James H. Kroeger

Landas

This article provides a comprehensive overview of the Fifteenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which focused on "Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment." Kroeger contextualizes the synod's proceedings and highlights its key themes, emphasizing the Church's commitment to listening to and walking with the youth. The piece underscores the pastoral methodology of "see, judge, act" and traces how the synod's communal discernment culminated in Pope Francis's apostolic exhortation, Christus Vivit. Ultimately, Kroeger illustrates a vision of a synodal, listening Church that embraces young people as vital, active protagonists in its ongoing mission.

Walk Me To The Gate: Christian Practices Of Accompaniment With People Who Are Dying And Their Families, Yolanda Kali Denson-Byers

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This mixed-methods concurrent triangulation research project asks, “What practices should we incorporate into the hospice ministry of Fellowship Lutheran Church in order to help dying people and their families experience a peaceful death with love?” Utilizing two focus groups, four interviews, and a congregational census, this project finds that research participants are terrorized by death and are hungry for hospice and bereavement ministries provided by their community of faith. This exploratory project illuminates the specific practices which missional congregations may utilize to empower the priesthood of all believers to create a beloved community which points to the hope of resurrection.

Empathy As Sacred Ethic: A Chaplain's Perspective On Difficult End Of Life Cases, Peter L. Bauck Jan 2017

Empathy As Sacred Ethic: A Chaplain's Perspective On Difficult End Of Life Cases, Peter L. Bauck

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

Because of our increasingly intercultural world, it can be difficult for patients, families, and medical teams to decide on what they should do for patients who are, in the medical team’s opinion, near the end of life. The family and medical team can hold disparate beliefs and values around what they should do for the patient. Ethics committees often get involved in these difficult end of life cases. These cases are also emotionally charged, especially for the family as they wrestle with the intensity of their loved one’s situation and try to decide what to do. Because of the emotional intensity …

Countertransference As Koinonia, Karin A. Craven Jan 2017

Countertransference As Koinonia, Karin A. Craven

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

This thesis inquires after the lived-through experience of community in the congregation by the pastoral leader. It is predicated upon the multiple self whose plurality is understood through psychoanalytical and postcolonial theories as well as by developmental processes illumined by interpersonal neurobiology. The phenomenological inquiry into one pastor’s experience of community in the congregation yielded in vivo themes – movement, joy, and open; connect, conflict, and centering; table, hospitality, love, and diversity -- that were understood broadly from the wondering perspective of desire. Closer theoretical analysis of these in vivo themes from theological, psychological, and interpersonal neurobiological conceptual categories was …

Beginning Teacher Induction In Secondary Schools: A Best Practice Case Study, S Kearney

Education Papers and Journal Articles

Beginning teacher induction is becoming an increasingly popular process in acculturating teachers to their new careers. The problems that teachers face early in their careers are well known, and effective and ongoing induction is one of the foremost practices for alleviating the pressures that teachers face early in their careers. While induction practices have become more common in recent years, there are still no mandated structures for inducting teachers into the profession throughout Australia. In a collective case study of six different programs in independent schools in Sydney, Australia, the author showcases one case in particular that illustrated best practice …

This strategic plan has been formulated and introduced at a time of general global economic recovery from the acute downturn spanning the period 2008 - 2013. However, the effects of the downturn are still widely felt in parts of the world and across Ireland. The current Irish government (2017) is currently reviewing a new approach to funding of higher education in Ireland. Exchequer funding for state institutions reduced in the main in late noughties, although creative state initiatives such as Springboard are still available for accessible higher education and training. For the first time in Irish history, students of established …

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This quantitative non-experimental descriptive correlational design sought to answer the question if there was a difference in newly licensed RN (NLRN) performance at one-year post hire after participation in a nurse residency program that offers a formalized curriculum that extends throughout the entire year, one that offers a formalized curriculum that does not extend throughout the entire year, or one that does not provide a formalized curriculum. The study utilized the Six Dimension Scale of Nursing Performance (SDNP) and evaluated NLRN performance on six subscales: leadership, critical care, teaching/collaboration, planning/evaluation, interpersonal relations/communication, and professional development at one-year post hire. Suicide Prevention In The Non-Psychiatric Hospital Setting: A Nurse Education Process, Terry Bird Jan 2017

Suicide Prevention In The Non-Psychiatric Hospital Setting: A Nurse Education Process, Terry Bird

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background/Purpose. Numerous studies indicate that nurses and other healthcare professionals receive little or no suicide-related education or training. Unfavorable attitudes about suicide can also negatively influence caregiver behaviors and impact patient care. Evaluations of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) as a gatekeeper training intervention consistently demonstrate enhanced knowledge, more favorable attitudes, and increased intervention skills. This project aimed to conduct a small-scale pilot of ASIST for hospital nurses, effect suicide education policies, and prevent suicide sentinel events at the project site.

Design. A single comparison group pre/post testing design was used.

Methods. A combination of purposive and network sampling …

In The Company Of Angels: Expressions Of Personal Autonomy, Authority, And Agency In Early Anglo-Saxon Monasticism, William Tanner Smoot Jan 2017

In The Company Of Angels: Expressions Of Personal Autonomy, Authority, And Agency In Early Anglo-Saxon Monasticism, William Tanner Smoot

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this thesis I examine the opportunities for individual agency and social and spiritual autonomy in the seventh-and-eighth-century Anglo-Saxon kingdoms occasioned by the introduction and development of Christian monasticism. The term “autonomy” concerns the degree to which individuals managed to determine the social order and nature, as well as spiritual character, of their ensuing lives through an adherence to monastic practice. Early Anglo-Saxon Christianity assumed a monastic character, and from the outset coenobitic communities acquired and maintained certain rights regarding their internal governance and social development from their ecclesiastic and secular superiors, which conceptually separated religious households from those of …

Chaplain Spiritual Assessment And Its Efficacy For The Palliative Care Team At Roper St. Francis Healthcare: An Interdisciplinary-Phenomenologic Inquiry, Yhanco Monet Jan 2017

Chaplain Spiritual Assessment And Its Efficacy For The Palliative Care Team At Roper St. Francis Healthcare: An Interdisciplinary-Phenomenologic Inquiry, Yhanco Monet

Doctor of Ministry Projects

A qualitative phenomenological research methodology was designed and implemented to answer the question: what is it that chaplains assessed which is perceived as useful for the Roper St. Francis Palliative Care team? Twelve Palliative Care practitioners, representing diverse specialties, were interviewed and surveyed to answer the research question. Evidence suggested that spiritual care and chaplaincy assessments were perceived as relevant to the Roper St. Francis’ Palliative Care praxis. However, the gathered data indicates that chaplains and Palliative Care practitioners would benefit from a more standardized/consistent spiritual assessment practice. A set of “Teaching Guidelines” and educational “Activities” was created with the …

Compassion Fatigue In Medical Surgical Nurses, Ashlee Nicole Simmons Jan 2017

Compassion Fatigue In Medical Surgical Nurses, Ashlee Nicole Simmons

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Often nurses are consumed by providing care to others and forget to care for themselves. The lack of self-care can lead to compassion fatigue in the nurse's life. The purpose of this thesis was to assess the level of compassion fatigue within medical surgical nurses, and determine the correlation between years of experience as a registered nurse and compassion fatigue. The Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL-5) was used to identify the existence of compassion fatigue in medical surgical nurses. Data was collected and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Seventy-five medical surgical nurses working in an acute …

The Therapeutic Relationship As A Context For Reformation, Kristine Lund Jan 2017

The Therapeutic Relationship As A Context For Reformation, Kristine Lund

Luther Faculty Publications

Luther’s lifelong struggle with melancholy and anxiety is well documented in his own writings as well as by Luther scholars. Luther notes the importance of his relationship with Johannes Staupitz, his mentor and spiritual advisor in addressing the inner torment he experienced and the significant effect this had on his theology and quality of life. This paper explores Luther’s relationship with Staupitz as an important context for the transformation of Luther’s personal life and the concurrent reformation of Luther’s theology and understanding of grace. Their relationship serves as a framework for understanding the importance of the psychotherapeutic relationship as a …

Catholic Girls All Grown Up: A Practical Theological Exploration Of Sexuality Formation In Young Adult Women, Emily Susanne Kahm Jan 2017

Catholic Girls All Grown Up: A Practical Theological Exploration Of Sexuality Formation In Young Adult Women, Emily Susanne Kahm

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Roman Catholic Church promotes exacting norms about the sexual behavior expected of Catholics, but prior qualitative and quantitative studies have shown a mixed effect on the decisions made by young adult Catholics, especially women. This qualitative study interviewed young adult women who were raised Catholic and sought to determine both what they were taught about sex and sexuality while growing up Catholic and how they think those teachings affected their lives and decision-making as young adults. Analysis of their responses indicated an anxious climate in their childhood educational experiences where adults were hesitant to answer questions or engage in …

"Maybe Jesus Was Suicidal Too": A Qualitative Inquiry Into Religion And Spirituality In Suicide Attempts, Elizabeth Ryan Hall Jan 2017

"Maybe Jesus Was Suicidal Too": A Qualitative Inquiry Into Religion And Spirituality In Suicide Attempts, Elizabeth Ryan Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Among the current trends in suicidology that hold promise for suicide prevention are a focus on new areas for empirical exploration and the employment of creative methodologies to ascertain these phenomena. One such area is religion, along with its more enigmatic counterpart, spirituality. Suicidological research has long demonstrated that people who are religiously involved tend to be more protected from suicide than those who are not, yet it has been less attentive to the conditions under which religion or spirituality fails to inhibit suicidality. In the decades since Durkheim's renowned 1897 study, the majority of the related research has taken …

An Investigation Of Self-Care Practices And Principles Among The Pentecostal-Apostolic Clergy, Chelsea A. Hall Jan 2017

An Investigation Of Self-Care Practices And Principles Among The Pentecostal-Apostolic Clergy, Chelsea A. Hall

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research project was to investigate the perspectives and practices of self-care among Pentecostal-Apostolic (P-A) clergy, and create a set of principles to assist the P-A clergy in conducting a God-honoring self-care. This was done through use of a convergent-parallel mixed method research design, with a case study approach. Literature reviews were conducted in biblical, theological and psychological research areas, while a survey containing both qualitative open-ended questions and quantitative Likert-scale items was developed and distributed via email to P-A clergy from the United Pentecostal Church International, Worldwide Pentecostal Fellowship, and Independent organizations. Thirty-four complete responses were …
