Choices in one sector or department of public policy, such as health, frequently produce costs and benefits in other sectors, such as education or the environment. In this article, I argue that administrators should not make decisions in ways that ignore effects on other policy sectors, and arguablythough more debatably-should not give special priority to the interests of their own sector In Part I, I review contexts where administrators are directed to ignore or give a lower priority to effects on other policy sectors. In Part II, I lay out an argument that agencies should not ignore these effects (using …

A New Derivatizing Method For The Simultanous Determination Of 3-Monochloropropanediol And 1,3- Dichloropropanol In Heat Processed Food Samples / Lee Bai Qin, Bai Qin Lee
Student Works (2010-2019)
3-Monochloro-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD) and 1,3-dichloropropanol (1,3-DCP) are heat- produced contaminants that form during the acid hydrolysis of vegetable protein (acid-HVP), which is a process employed in the production of artificial soy sauces. Available laboratory study reports have shown that 3-MCPD is carcinogenic and toxic to the kidneys and reproductive organs, while 1,3-DCP is genotoxic, hepatotoxic and carcinogenic. On account of the carcinogenic properties reported, 3-MCPD and 1,3- DCP are listed as Proposition 65 (Prop. 65) and group 2B carcinogens. The Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) method of 3-MCPD detection requires highntemperature heating (60°C) and a costly derivatizing agent (61.10 USD …

Investigating The Relationship Between Instructors’ Use Of Active Learning Strategies And Students’ Conceptual Understanding And Affective Changes In Introductory Biology: A Comparison Of Two Active-Learning Environments, Lacy M. Cleveland, Jeffrey T. Olimpo, Sue Dechenne-Peters
Biology: Faculty Publications
In response to calls for reform in undergraduate biology education, we conducted research examining how varying active-learning strategies impacted students’ conceptual understanding, attitudes, and motivation in two sections of a large-lecture introductory cell and molecular biology course. Using a quasi-experimental design, we collected quantitative data to compare participants’ conceptual understanding, attitudes, and motivation in the biological sciences across two contexts that employed different active-learning strategies and that were facilitated by unique instructors. Students participated in either graphic organizer/worksheet activities or clicker-based case studies. After controlling for demographic and presemester affective differences, we found that students in both active-learning environments displayed …

Anaemia Of Chronic Kidney Disease: What We Know Now, Anoushka R. Krishnan, Debbie Trinder, Anita C. G. Chua, Aron Chakera, Grant A. Ramm, John K. Olynyk
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Our understanding of the pathophysiology of the anaemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has improved considerably in the last decade with the discovery of the iron regulatory peptide hepcidin. Reduced clearance of hepcidin and the presence of a chronic inflammatory state contribute to elevated hepcidin levels in kidney disease. The recent discovery of the various factors and signalling pathways regulating hepcidin has opened up an exciting avenue for research into the development of newer agents that could treat anaemia of CKD. This review highlights our current understanding of iron metabolism in health, the regulators of hepcidin, issues associated with the …

Leakage Evaluation Of Three Endodontic Sealers Used In A Single-Cone Technique: A Study Using Bioluminescent Bacteria, Sean M. Horan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction.;After proper chemomechanical disinfection and obturation of a root canal system, the next important goal in endodontic therapy is obtaining an adequate coronal seal. If the coronal seal becomes compromised, it is difficult to decide whether the root canal system should be re-treated. This decision should be made based on the ability of the root canal filling to resist bacterial contamination and on the length of time the seal has been compromised.;The root canal system should be filled in three dimensions, typically with a combination of gutta percha and sealer. One obturation method that has seen a revival in recent …
Effects Of Chronic Electronic Cigarette Use On Glucose Metabolism, Hannah Hoskinson
Effects Of Chronic Electronic Cigarette Use On Glucose Metabolism, Hannah Hoskinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Traditional cigarette usage has been linked to a number of nefarious metabolic effects, including insulin resistance; however, the effects of electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) are not currently known. Advertised as a safe alternative for traditional tobacco cigarettes, E-cigs still contain some of the same harmful chemicals as tobacco cigarettes. Through this study, we hope to gain perspective on whether e-cigs play into the development of altered glucose homeostasis. C57BL/6 mice were divided between E-cig (n=15) and control (n=15) groups and exposed to either cappuccino flavored E-cig vapor or filtered air for 4 h/d, 5 d/wk for 8 months. Fasting blood glucose …
The Role Of Somatostatin In The Regulation Of Gonadotropin Secretion In Sheep, Richard B. Mccosh
The Role Of Somatostatin In The Regulation Of Gonadotropin Secretion In Sheep, Richard B. Mccosh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Two modes of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion are necessary for female fertility: surge and episodic secretion. However, the neural systems that regulate these GnRH secretion patterns are still under investigation. The neuropeptide somatostatin (SST) inhibits episodic luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in humans and sheep, and several lines of evidence suggest SST may regulate secretion during the LH surge. Neither a SST receptor 2 (SSTR2) agonist (octreotide) or antagonist (CYN154806; CYN) altered the amplitude or timing of the LH surge. Administration of CYN to intact ewes during either the breeding season or anestrus increased LH secretion and …

The Effects Of Nutrition Education On Third And Fifth Grade Students’ Fruit And Vegetable Knowledge, Preference, And Consumption, Alexandra Epstein-Solfield
All Master's Theses
Regular consumption of fruit and vegetables (F/V) may reduce the risk of obesity and obesity-related diseases, yet most American school children fail to meet recommended intakes. One proposed method for reducing childhood obesity is implementing school-based nutrition education programs aimed at increasing F/V intake. This repeated measures study examined the effectiveness of an eight-week F/V-targeted nutrition education intervention on elementary-school students’ nutrition knowledge, F/V preference, and salad bar consumption. A convenience sample of third- and fifth-grade students (n = 149) participated in the study. Surveys were administered pre- and post-intervention to assess F/V knowledge and preference. Pre- and post-plate waste …

Piano Music As A Behavioral Intervention At The Ellensburg, Wa Developmental Preschool, Christopher Hull
All Master's Theses
Limited empirical support presently exists for the use of music as a behavioral intervention for students with disabilities. The purpose of this research was to study whether the social behaviors of children enrolled in a developmental preschool classroom changed in response to live piano music. The principal investigator hypothesized an increase in dyadic and/or other group-oriented play in the presence of live piano music, compared to when no piano music played. This eight-week study used a single-subject, A-B-A-B-C withdrawal design and a 30-second partial interval sampling procedure to sequentially observe and analyze the frequency of six operationally defined behaviors among …

Mother-Offspring Relationships In Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana) At Mt. Huangshan, China, Courtney Martinez
Mother-Offspring Relationships In Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana) At Mt. Huangshan, China, Courtney Martinez
All Master's Theses
The mammalian mother-offspring relationship, the first bond an offspring will form, is complex in its development, as well as its costs and benefits to both mother and offspring. Across various non-human primate species, researchers have extensively examined this relationship, yet very little is known about how it changes as offspring age. Mother-infant relationships within the genus Macaca, for example, have been observed for decades in both field and laboratory settings. Researchers have found species differences in maternal behavior, as well as a female offspring bias in female philopatric societies. However, little is known about the mother-offspring relationship of Tibetan …

The Effect Of Social Influence On Perception Of Tornado Warnings, Jason A. Parker
The Effect Of Social Influence On Perception Of Tornado Warnings, Jason A. Parker
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Tornado activity annually results in many deaths throughout the U.S. As a result, the emergency alert system (including tornado warnings) has made considerable advancements throughout the past few decades. However, continued improvements could be made to warning content that aid to facilitate adaptive decision-making by increasing individuals’ motivation to respond. One method that could increase adaptive responses to warnings is by including the modality of descriptive social information within the warning. Research suggests that normative social influence acts as a powerful motivator for individuals to conform toward the witnessed or perceived behaviors of others. The current study examined the impact …

What Is That Hamburger Doing To My Child's Grades? Childhood Obesity And Its Effects On A Student's Academic Performance, Cheryl Page
Journal Publications
This paper addresses childhood obesity and its correlating effects on an obese child's academic development. The terms and studies outlined in this paper specifically address the issue of obesity in children. It is important to state this distinction because obesity among children is defined and measured differently than it is among adults. Before discussing the differences in the academic development of non-obese children and obese children, I will begin by defining the following terms: "Body Mass Index (BMI)," "BMI-for-age," "Overweight," "Percentile Rates," and "Childhood Obesity."
