Consequences Of Community Water Fluoridation Cessation For Medicaid Eligible Children And Adolescents, Jennifer Meyer Jan 2017

Consequences Of Community Water Fluoridation Cessation For Medicaid Eligible Children And Adolescents, Jennifer Meyer

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Oral health impacts general health and well-being throughout the lifespan. Recent trends in the United States towards cessation of community water fluoridation (CWF) may increase disparities in oral health. The purpose of this quantitative retrospective cohort study was to analyze Medicaid dental claims records for caries related procedures among 0 to18-year-old patients during an optimal CWF year 2003 (n = 854) and compare them to claims records from 2012 (n = 1,053), 5 years after CWF was ceased. The theoretical framework of this study was the diffusion of innovations theory. Statistically significant results included higher mean number of caries related …

Addressing Barriers To Hepatitis C Treatment Initiation In Kentucky Clinic, Moaz Abdelwadoud Jan 2017

Addressing Barriers To Hepatitis C Treatment Initiation In Kentucky Clinic, Moaz Abdelwadoud

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Introduction. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the most prevalent blood borne infection in the United States and its chronic infection has a high burden on the American healthcare system. Since 2014, the all-oral Directly Acting Antiviral (DAA)-based therapy has been established as the standardized curative treatment for HCV with unprecedented high effectiveness and tolerability. Nevertheless, there is a significant gap between the promise from DAAs benefits and the treatment initiation rates in the United States and Kentucky.

Objectives. The goal of this study is to improve the access to the all-oral DAA-based treatment among HCV patients seeking outpatient …

Exploring The Diversity Of Southwest Florida Fungi Through The Amplification Of The Internal Transcribed Spacer Region, Kristine Cerbone Jan 2017

Exploring The Diversity Of Southwest Florida Fungi Through The Amplification Of The Internal Transcribed Spacer Region, Kristine Cerbone

Theses & ETDs

The kingdom Fungi consists of a largely diverse array of organisms responsible for the natural decomposition of organic compounds. These organisms are essential for every ecosystem on Earth and can be found all rural, urban and suburban communities. Classification of fungal species in a given environment provides insights into the condition of its ecosystem. In addition, these organisms provide sources of nutrition and alternatives to harsh chemical processes in industry use, such as in the production of paper. This thesis represents an attempt to begin the characterization of the diversity of Southwest Florida fungi in rural, urban and suburban environments …

Youth Empowerment And Self-Esteem For Minority Students Of Ballet, Jasmine M. Respress Jan 2017

Youth Empowerment And Self-Esteem For Minority Students Of Ballet, Jasmine M. Respress

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis, I examine how minority students react to being involved in an after school dance program that focuses on ballet. Ballet is a predominantly and historically white space. I look at how the minority youth’s self-esteem is formed, discuss how after school programs affect youth empowerment, and how body expectations influence dancers, especially young dancers of color. I support my claims with evidence gained through a mixed methods approach with includes participant observation, surveys and interviews. I ground my study in the existing literature on race, gender and the ideal body and youth empowerment programs. I will conclude …

Cultivating Resistance: An Ethnographic Study Of Herbal Activism And Solidarity, Sophia Schultz Jan 2017

Cultivating Resistance: An Ethnographic Study Of Herbal Activism And Solidarity, Sophia Schultz

Theses & ETDs

As an individual and community tool, herbalism has the potential to be used as a political statement. Herbalism acts as a catalyst for greater access in models of care that the United States healthcare system lacks. In this thesis I examine examples of free first aid and medic care in Central and South Florida through ethnographic research alongside Western herbalists. Through an activist anthropology framework, the study traces herbalists who use their practice to offer free herbal care to people of “vulnerable populations.” The goal of the thesis is to shed light on herbal activist work through understanding their models …

Manganese Limitation As A Mechanism For Reduced Decomposition In Soils Under Long-Term Atmospheric Nitrogen Deposition, Emily D. Whalen Jan 2017

Manganese Limitation As A Mechanism For Reduced Decomposition In Soils Under Long-Term Atmospheric Nitrogen Deposition, Emily D. Whalen

Master's Theses and Capstones

Long-term atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has been shown to reduce leaf litter and lignin decomposition in forest soils, leading to an accumulation of soil carbon. Reduced decomposition has been accompanied by altered structure and function of fungal communities, the primary decomposers in forest ecosystems; however, a mechanistic understanding of fungal responses to chronic N enrichment is lacking. A reduction in soil and litter manganese (Mn) concentrations under N enrichment (i.e., Mn limitation) may explain these observations, because Mn is a cofactor and regulator of lignin-decay enzymes produced by fungi. We conducted a 6-month incubation study to evaluate the effect of …

Phylogenetic And Phylogeographic Analyses Reveal A Species Complex In The Estuarine Nudibranch Tenellia Adspersa, Amanda Sobel Jan 2017

Phylogenetic And Phylogeographic Analyses Reveal A Species Complex In The Estuarine Nudibranch Tenellia Adspersa, Amanda Sobel

Master's Theses and Capstones

Until recently, the nudibranch genus Tenellia (Nudibranchia: Fionidae) was thought to include a single or group of species restricted to temperate estuarine waters. Given the addition of numerous other species from recent studies, the genus now encompasses species from polar, temperate, and tropical oceans from oceanic to estuarine salinities. One such fionid, Tenellia adspersa, is found in temperate estuarine waters globally and its presence is ecologically important as its congeners are capable of decimating colonies of their hydroid prey within a single generation (approx. 20-60 days). The literature is historically vague and conflicted on the morphology, taxonomy, and geographic distribution …

Heifers were blocked by birth date and randomly assigned, to 1 of 4 treatments in a completely randomized block design: (1) 100 g of soybean meal carrier, (control; CON); (2) 0.25 g SB/kg of body weight + carrier (0.25SB); (3) 0.50 g SB/kg of BW +, carrier …

Designing And Testing A Cost-Effective Device For The Harvest Of White Worms, Andrew S. Pompeo Jan 2017

Designing And Testing A Cost-Effective Device For The Harvest Of White Worms, Andrew S. Pompeo

Master's Theses and Capstones

Rising global populations are causing a food crisis that can only be solved with novel, sustainable methods of food production. Many countries, including the United States, are increasing their aquaculture production to meet the appetites of an increasing population. Alternative feeds for aquaculture are necessary to reduce the pressure on overfished forage fish species and create low cost feeds. White worms are an effective, sustainable live feed for several fish species and cost very little to cultivate. However, for white worms to be a competitive alternative feed, they need to be harvested from the soil in which they are cultivated …

Iron Metabolism Genes In Browsing And Grazing Rhinoceroses: Implications For Iron Overload Disorder, Lorien Salyer Jan 2017

Iron Metabolism Genes In Browsing And Grazing Rhinoceroses: Implications For Iron Overload Disorder, Lorien Salyer

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Iron overload disorder is a serious condition that affects many animals of conservation interest, including rhinoceroses. Iron overload disorder is only found in browsing rhinos (African black, Diceros bicornis, and Sumatran, Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) but not in grazing species (African white, Ceratotherium simum, and greater one-horned, Rhinoceros unicornis). Iron overload is connected with many of the other health issues seen in captive browsing rhinoceroses, so it is vitally important that the iron metabolism process is studied to improve the existing husbandry procedures of these critically endangered animals. The objective of this study was to characterize genes related to …

Studying The Effect Of Corruption On Income Per-Capita Level In An Iv Estimation In Developing Countries, Hoda Hassaballa Jan 2017

Studying The Effect Of Corruption On Income Per-Capita Level In An Iv Estimation In Developing Countries, Hoda Hassaballa

Economics

Income per-capita is a measure of economic well-being. Through its effect on economic development, it can indirectly affect sustainable development. Hence, it is essential to study the determinants of Income per-capita Level. Recently, corruption level has played an influential role in determining income per-capita. However, theoretically and empirically its effect is still debatable. Besides the traditional determinants of income per-capita, the effect of corruption on Income percapita level is examined in a sample of developing countries between1996-2013. There is a potential endogeneity problem that arises from the two way relationship between corruption and income per capita levels which threatens internal …

Ligands Of Therapeutic Utility For The Liver X Receptors., Rajesh Komati, Dominick Spadoni, Shilong Zheng, Jayalakshmi Sridhar

Faculty and Staff Publications

Liver X receptors (LXRs) have been increasingly recognized as a potential therapeutic target to treat pathological conditions ranging from vascular and metabolic diseases, neurological degeneration, to cancers that are driven by lipid metabolism. Amidst intensifying efforts to discover ligands that act through LXRs to achieve the sought-after pharmacological outcomes, several lead compounds are already being tested in clinical trials for a variety of disease interventions. While more potent and selective LXR ligands continue to emerge from screening of small molecule libraries, rational design, and empirical medicinal chemistry approaches, challenges remain in minimizing undesirable effects of LXR activation on lipid metabolism. …

Novel Application Of Untargeted Metabolomics To Diseases Of Neurosurgical Significance, Alex Yang Lu Jan 2017

Novel Application Of Untargeted Metabolomics To Diseases Of Neurosurgical Significance, Alex Yang Lu

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Metabolomics, an emerging technique to study hundreds of small-molecule metabolites simultaneously, has been seldom applied to diseases of neurosurgical significance. We utilized metabolomics to explore two distinct questions: 1. to identify global metabolic changes and metabolite predictors of long-term outcome in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients, 2. to identify differential metabolites profiles of radiation necrosis vs. recurrent tumor of metastatic brain lesions post-Gamma Knife radiosurgery. The first study applied gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF) to cerebrospinal fluid samples collected from 15 high-grade aSAH patients (modified Fisher grades 3 and 4). Analysis was performed at two time points; metabolite levels …

On Health, Law, And Religion, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2017

On Health, Law, And Religion, Stacey A. Tovino

Scholarly Works

The Supreme Court recently decided a number of cases involving health, law, and religion, including Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, Zubik v. Burwell, and Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. These cases were important for understanding constitutional undue burden limitations and the boundaries of religious exercise during the Obama Administration. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court's recent opinions addressing health, law, and religion have little value for many health law professors and most practicing health care attorneys. These individuals, tasked with teaching and applying the thousands of federal and state statutes, regulations, and government guidance documents that address a wide …

(Anti)Poverty Measures Exposed, Francine J. Lipman Jan 2017

(Anti)Poverty Measures Exposed, Francine J. Lipman

Scholarly Works

Few economic indicators have more salience and pervasive financial impact on everyday lives in the United States than poverty measures. Nevertheless, policymakers, researchers, advocates, and legislators generally do not understand the details of poverty measure mechanics. These detailed mechanics shape and reshape poverty measures and the too often uninformed responses and remedies. This Article will build a bridge from personal portraits of families living in poverty to the resource allocations that failed them by exposing the specific detailed mechanics underlying the Census Bureau’s official (OPM) and supplemental poverty measures (SPM). Too often, when we confront the problem of poverty, the …

The Pre-Collegiate Pipeline To Diversify The Nursing Workforce, Pamela L. Mccue Jan 2017

The Pre-Collegiate Pipeline To Diversify The Nursing Workforce, Pamela L. Mccue

Open Access Dissertations

In the United States, increasing racial and ethnic diversity coupled with widening health care disparities have prompted growing concern about the lack of racial and ethnic diversity in the health professions. As the largest sector of the health care workforce who practice at all levels and settings of health care, the nursing profession has the potential to widely effect changes to reduce disparities. Yet only 19% of the registered nurse workforce reflects diversity, prompting a look at pre-collegiate pathways to a nursing career. Guided by Social Cognitive Career Theory, this study examined the pre-college factors that influenced student choice in …
