Department of Medicine

The last few decades have seen substantial growth in the populations of competitive athletes and highly active people (CAHAP). Although vigorous physical exercise is an effective way to reduce the risk of cardiovascular (CV) disease, CAHAP remain susceptible to inherited and acquired CV disease, and may be most at risk for adverse CV outcomes during intense physical activity. Traditionally, multidisciplinary teams comprising athletic trainers, physical therapists, primary care sports medicine physicians, and orthopedic surgeons have provided clinical care for CAHAP. However, there is increasing recognition that a care team including qualified CV specialists optimizes care delivery for CAHAP. In recognition …

Effects Of Fertilizer And Shade Management On Nitrogen Mineralization, Nitrifying Microbial Abundance And Nitrogen-Fixing Capacity Of Erythrina Poeppigiana In Coffee (Coffea Arabica) Agroforestry Systems In Costa Rica, Stuart E. Barker Iii Jan 2017

Barker Iii

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Worldwide chemical fertilizer use has increased by four times during the last 50 years. Conventional agricultural systems have a high nitrifying nature, resulting in a loss of nearly 70% of overall nitrogen (N) fertilizer inputs, an estimated economic loss of $81 billion. Over application of fertilizer is rampant in tropical developing nations in Central America, where coffee is major crop. Agroforestry offers ecologically sustainable land management strategies that promote the provision of ecosystem services such as, protection of biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and water and soil regulation. When legume trees are incorporated as the shade tree in coffee production, direct …

Connecting The Dots: A Food Web Of The Lower Ogeechee River, Allison K. Lutz Jan 2017

Connecting The Dots: A Food Web Of The Lower Ogeechee River, Allison K. Lutz

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Ogeechee is a fifth order river that originates in the Georgia Piedmont region and flows through the Coastal Plain region in the Southeastern portion of the state. The Ogeechee is one of the last unregulated rivers in Georgia; allowing for studies to occur under a natural flow regime. To my knowledge, studies that incorporate fish into ecological networks (e.g., food webs) are yet to be developed for the Ogeechee River, thus, one of the main objectives of this research was to address this knowledge gap. Five fish species were collected from June 2016 to October 2016 in order to …

Antibiotics And Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria In Coastal Plain Streams, Jason Duff Jan 2017

Antibiotics And Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria In Coastal Plain Streams, Jason Duff

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Streams across the United States and globally are influenced by environmental contamination, including antibiotics, which enter streams due to widespread use and multiple pathways into the environment. Antibiotics are also likely to enter streams in mixture with other contaminants that alter the effects on aquatic organisms. Furthermore, antibiotic-resistant bacteria enter streams through similar pathways as antibiotics with implications for natural microbial communities. Therefore, understanding the presence and effects of antibiotic-contaminant mixtures and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in streams is important for resource management.

Chapter one describes an experiment that tested the hypothesis that the antibiotic tetracycline (TC) alone influences phytoplankton communities differently …

Cultivating Ecological Literacy And Rethinking Our Connections To Nature, Sean Fretwell Jan 2017

Cultivating Ecological Literacy And Rethinking Our Connections To Nature, Sean Fretwell

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation I explore the complex, often contested, relationships between humankind and nature. I consider the changing state of these relationships as they are influenced by factors rooted in science, technology, and economics. I also examine these relationships as they relate to human activities with agriculture. Considering the present state of environmental crisis and the abundance of evidence indicating the deleterious activities of humankind as primary causes for the many global calamities, I argue for revising industrially-driven ideologies; particularly those driven by the economic paradigm of capitalism and self-interest. Additionally, I submit that a return to kinship with nature …

Comprehensive Analyses Of Mirna And Dna Methylation In 17beta-Estradiol Exposed Juvenile Rainbow Trout Skeletal Muscle, Prasanthi P. Koganti Jan 2017

Comprehensive Analyses Of Mirna And Dna Methylation In 17beta-Estradiol Exposed Juvenile Rainbow Trout Skeletal Muscle, Prasanthi P. Koganti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Reproductive development in female teleosts like rainbow trout starts with release of the sex steroid estrogen, necessary for synthesis of the egg yolk protein vitellogenin. Increase in estrogen secretion during these reproductive phases results in increased energy demands. Skeletal muscle serves as an immediate endogenous source to address energy demands during vitellogenesis and spawning due to which it undergoes rapid degradation resulting in water accumulation, poor fillet and low egg quality. An imbalance in protein turnover is observed not only because of rapid increase in degradative pathways but also due to decreased protein synthesis. These changes in protein metabolism in …

Subdelegating Powers, Jennifer Nou Jan 2017

Subdelegating Powers, Jennifer Nou

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The traditional portrait of the administrative state often features the politically-appointed agency head at its center: the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, for instance, or the Secretary of the Department of Labor. This picture of bureaucratic power, however, is incomplete. For much of that power is, in fact, subdelegated within the agency. The implication is that decision rights are often exercised not by statutory delegates, but rather by lower-level officials and tenure-protected career staff. The purpose of this work is to bring these background actors—like the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Director of Enforcement—squarely to the foreground.

In doing so, …

The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between dietary intake of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids on free radical injury and free radical scavenging in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) so that complications of kidney failure, especially cardiovascular disease, may be avoided or delayed. Children with CKD on dialysis and post-renal transplantation are at an extremely high risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We hypothesized that children with CKD who have higher dietary intake of antioxidants and omega-3 FAs, would have lower free radical injury, as measured by 8-Isoprostanes (8-ISOP) and Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) …

An Enhanced Nerve Conduit Combined With Exercise To Improve Functional Recovery After Peripheral Nerve Injury, Tonya Jo Whitehead Jan 2017

An Enhanced Nerve Conduit Combined With Exercise To Improve Functional Recovery After Peripheral Nerve Injury, Tonya Jo Whitehead

Wayne State University Dissertations

Peripheral nerve injuries affect millions of people each year around the world. Current treatments include an autograft, the gold standard, and commercially available nerve growth conduits (NGC). Autografts have several drawbacks including donor site morbidity and nerve size mismatch, which leads to incomplete recovery. Commercial NGCs can help with recovery but do not contain any specific cues to guide nerve regeneration. This thesis first evaluated mechanical, topographical and chemical cues that can be included in a NGC to promote and direct nerve regeneration. To incorporate all of the cues, a compliant substrate methacrylated hyaluronic acid (MeHA, mechanical cue) is electrospun …

Effects Of Palm Oil Tocotrienols Rich Fraction On Cholesterol Efflux, Erandi Jayamini Jayawardana Arachchige Jan 2017

Effects Of Palm Oil Tocotrienols Rich Fraction On Cholesterol Efflux, Erandi Jayamini Jayawardana Arachchige

Wayne State University Theses

Tocotrienols are naturally occurring bioactive compounds which possess beneficial effects on multiple chronic diseases including atherosclerosis and cancer. It is believed to exert atheroprotective effects via promoting reverse cholesterol transport, a process that removes excess cholesterol from the body. Cholesterol efflux is an early step in reverse cholesterol transport and impaired cholesterol efflux is known to trigger foam cell formation, a hallmark of atherosclerosis. An increase in cholesterol efflux and decrease in cholesterol influx in macrophages has been suggested to reduce atherosclerosis risk by reducing foam cell formation. In addition, tocotrienols have shown anti-cancer effects on Non-small cell lung cancer …

Examining The Role Of Ethnic Identity In The Relationship Between Characteristics Of Autism Spectrum Disorders And Eating Disorders, Ashley Bojorquez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present work provides a synthetic literature review investigating the potential role of ethnic identity in the relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and eating disorders (EDs). To date, there is no literature that directly examines the role that ethnic identity may play in the relationship between these two disorders. However, there is reason to believe it may; previous literature has shown that race/ethnicity plays a role in both of these disorders, and the role of ethnic identity has been more fully explored in the ED population. Notably, there is little research that examines the role of ethnic identity on …

The Role Of The 5-Hydroxytrptamine 1f Receptor In Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Acute Kidney Injury, Whitney Sharee Gibbs Jan 2017

The Role Of The 5-Hydroxytrptamine 1f Receptor In Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Acute Kidney Injury, Whitney Sharee Gibbs

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Mitochondrial dysfunction exacerbates cellular injury, impairs energy-dependent repair, and leads to kidney damage and failure following acute kidney injury (AKI). Mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired mitochondrial biogenesis correlate with decreased in peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor coactivator 1-α (PGC-1α), the reported master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, and its downstream targets following I/R-induced AKI. Furthermore, recovery of renal function and tubular injury is accelerated following pharmacological induction of mitochondrial biogenesis following I/R-induced AKI. These results suggest that recovery of mitochondrial number and function may be an effective therapeutic strategy in restoring renal function following AKI. We recently made the novel observation that agonists of …
