The aim of the present review is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of curcumin and fish oil as alternative or adjuvant treatments to NSAIDs and immune modulating medications for the treatment of chronic inflammation.

An online search of CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane and Alt Healthwatchdatabases was conducted. It was limited to peer-reviewed articles and clinical trials in academic journals within the last ten years.

Current research suggests that curcumin may be efficacious in the treatment of chronic inflammation. It is generally regarded as safe up to 12 gm/day with mild gastrointestinal effects but poor bioavailability has limited its clinical application. …

Early Antibiotic Exposure And Childhood Obesity, Agatha J. Ottem Jan 2017

Early Antibiotic Exposure And Childhood Obesity, Agatha J. Ottem

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Obesity is becoming a growing concern in today’s population. Over the last thirty years, obesity rates have doubled in adults and quadrupled in adolescents. One of the more recent theories is that childhood obesity is influenced by early exposure to antibiotics. The purpose of this project is to discuss how antibiotics alter the human gut microbiota and how this affects nutrient consumption, which can lead to childhood obesity. There is a focus on the current research studies that address if, indeed, there is a link between childhood obesity and early antibiotic exposure. Through a review of several electronic databases and …

The Impact Of Gender, Victim Weight, And Victim Responsibility On Attributions Of Blame And Responsibility In A Case Of Nonconsensual Pornography, Carolyn Ann Uhl

Theses and Dissertations

The sharing of sexually explicit messages or photographs, known as sexting, is on the rise. As a result, nonconsensual pornography, commonly referred to as revenge porn, is also increasing. Victims of nonconsensual pornography suffer a variety of negative consequences following the distribution of their photographs. Various case and victim characteristics of nonconsensual pornography cases may alter observer perceptions of these situations. This study utilized a mock police report describing a case in which a former romantic partner distributed nude photographs of the victim online without the victim’s consent. The police reports were identical, apart from manipulations of victim gender, victim …

A Theology Of Feasting: Encountering The Kingdom Of God, G Morrison Jan 2017

A Theology Of Feasting: Encountering The Kingdom Of God, G Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Central to a theology of feasting is the nearness and newness of the Kingdom of God. Engaging Levinas’ philosophy, this article develops a theology of feasting to portray the intimacy of encountering the risen Christ’s word of goodness, mercy and joy in the poor one’s face. Such intimacy relates the joy of being children of God, seeking to know the Father’s forgiveness and prophetic call not to forget ‘the least of these who are members of my family’ (Mat 25:40), namely, “the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame” (Lk 14:3), chosen by God to feast in the Kingdom …

The Moral High Road In The Undercity: An Examination Of Ethics In A Mumbai Slum, Mary L. Bauer

Catholic Studies Faculty Publications

As of 2016, 1.6 billion people around the globe lacked proper shelter and of these, one billion lived in informal settlements, also called slums, according to data collected by the United Nations (UN-Habitat 2016). Investigative journalist Katherine Boo spent four years, between 2007 and 2011, interviewing and shadowing the residents of one such slum on the outskirts of Mumbai. Her goal was to draw attention to socio-economic inequality (Boo, 2014 pp. 247-248), but in the course of collecting data about the consequences of poverty and residents’ attempts to rise out of it, she also recorded information about their moral choices, …

The Narrative Of The Outsider: Marginalization In The Works Of María Luisa Bemberg, Lucrecia Martel, And Lucía Puenzo, Natalie Nagl Jan 2017

The Narrative Of The Outsider: Marginalization In The Works Of María Luisa Bemberg, Lucrecia Martel, And Lucía Puenzo, Natalie Nagl

Wayne State University Dissertations

Through film and literature, my dissertation explores the representation of race, social class, and gender in the works of three Argentine directors. These social constructs have become so ingrained in interpersonal relations that there is rigidity in how they are considered. Therefore, those individuals who do not think and interact appropriately with the constructs occupy the outside. The possibility of marginalization adds another layer to the constructs by sensitizing them to the point that they affect the individual and their relationships (i.e. psychologically and socially). However, several representations, such as those that make up our corpus, challenge the definitions of …

A Place To Call Home, Ian Strahn, Kurt Nickolas Secrest, Mckennah Andrews, Jessie Seiler, Emily Eaton, Erika Hidem

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Individuals across the globe do not relate historic migration patterns with current conflicts, which is a problem that encompasses both historic and current migrations. Ironically, individuals who likely descend from immigrants themselves may highlight differences rather than similarities among newcomers while perceiving them as outsiders, and perhaps even exhibiting discrimination toward them. Our group sought to provide an international and historic perspective about migration by paralleling the issues that immigrants --specifically refugees-- face while encouraging individuals to look inward at their own family’s migratory roots. This was accomplished through a three-pronged approach: (1) obtaining profiles of historic and modern ‘refugees’; …

Induced Defences In Plants Reduce Herbivory By Increasing Cannibalism, John L. Orrock, Brian M. Connolly, Anthony Kitchen Jan 2017

Induced Defences In Plants Reduce Herbivory By Increasing Cannibalism, John L. Orrock, Brian M. Connolly, Anthony Kitchen

Biology Faculty Scholarship

Plants are attacked by myriad herbivores, and many plants exhibit anti-herbivore defences. We tested the hypothesis that induced defences benefit tomato plants by encouraging insects to eat other members of their species. We found that defences that promote cannibalism benefit tomatoes in two ways: cannibalism directly reduces herbivore abundance, and cannibals eat significantly less plant material. This previously unknown means of defence may alter plant-herbivore dynamics, plant evolution and pathogen transmission.

Background: Excess weight (overweight and obesity) is the major modifiable risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and other non-communicable diseases. However, excess weight may not be as predictive of diabetes risk as once thought. While excess weight and other obesity-related non-communicable diseases are of growing concern in low-middle income countries in Latin America, there is limited research on risk factors associated with T2DM in adolescents. This study investigated prevalence of overweight, obesity, prediabetes, diabetes and metabolic syndrome in adolescents in Ecuador.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 433 adolescents from two schools in a small …

D-Lactate And Low Molecular Ages Are Elevated In Obese Adolescents: Evidence For Carbonyl Stress In Adolescent Obesity, Reyna Rodriguez Mortera, Yasmin Bains, Russell Caccavello, Claudia Luevano, Ma. Eugenia Garay-Sevilla, Alejandro Gugliucci

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine

Glycation and carbonyl stress produced by methylglyoxal (MG) as a consequence of triose flux in glycolysis has been implicated in the etiology of metabolic syndrome and diabetes complications. An integrated estimation of MG flux is provided by measuring concentrations of its catabolite D-lactate in serum. However, no studies have explored the pathway in childhood obesity.

Objective: Study serum concentrations of D-lactate and low molecular weight advanced glycation end-products (LMWAGE) in lean vs adolescents with obesity.

Material and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 30 lean and 30 obese adolescents between the ages of 15-19 years. D-lactate was measured kinetically …

Rationale For, Initiation And Titration Of The Basal Insulin/Glp-1ra Fixed-Ratio Combination Products, Ideglira And Iglarlixi, For The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes, Virginia Valentine, Jennifer Goldman, Jay H. Shubrook

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Osteopathic Medicine

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a progressive disease affecting glucose regulation and a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Many patients are not escalated up the treatment ladder appropriately despite failing to achieve glycemic control, with barriers such as fear of hypoglycemia, weight gain, and treatment burden recognized as factors. Exogenous basal insulin is titrated to address control of fasting plasma glucose and may preserve residual β-cell function, thus promoting a greater endogenous prandial insulin response. Native glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a peptide hormone secreted by the gut in response to nutrient ingestion; it increases insulin secretion, inhibits glucagon …

Winter Is Changing: Trophic Interactions Under Altered Snow Regimes, Rachel M. Penczykowski, Brian M. Connolly, Brandon T. Barton

Biology Faculty Scholarship

Shifts in abiotic conditions can strongly influence not only the demography, ecology, and evolution of individual species, but also the networks of interactions that structure communities and ecosystems. Though many studies have addressed how changes in mean temperature or rainfall patterns will affect ecosystems, there has been far less attention on the impact of changing snow regimes. As climate change alters the abundance and persistence of snowpack in temperate and polar regions of the globe, novel reductions or accumulations of snow may dramatically impact the nature of interactions between organisms in these ecosystems. In this review, we focus on four …

Proteomic Analysis Of Flowers At Two Developmental Stages In Thermopsis Turcica (Fabaceae), Mustafa Yildiz, Emre Pehli̇van, Hakan Terzi̇

Turkish Journal of Botany

Flower development is a complex physiological phenomenon that is affected by environmental stimuli and endogenous signals. Several molecular approaches have provided a comprehensive view of the physiological processes associated with flower development, but little is known about proteomic changes. Therefore, we investigated the proteomic alterations during flower development in endemic Thermopsis turcica (Vuralia turcica), an unusual legume species with 3-4 free carpels in a single flower. A comparative proteomic analysis to identify proteins involved in flower development was carried out in T. turcica. Alterations in proteomes of the flower buds and fully opened flowers were studied by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. …
