Mimosine Toxicity In Leucaena Biomass: A Hurdle Impeding Maximum Use For Bioproducts And Bioenergy, N. Ramli, A.A. Jamaludin, Zul Ilham
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
Leucaena biomass could serve as a new commodity for bio energy production. It is well established as a feedstock for animal husbandry, due to its nutrient content and lower cost. However, the existence of mimosine caused loss of hair among ruminants. This paper provides a short review of current uses of Leucaena, from agriculture to bio energy. In the next section, the techniques to remove Leucaena toxicity caused by the toxic non-protein amino acid mimosine will be discussed. A common mimosine inactivation technique adopted for animal rations is dosage-dependent on the Leucaena portion and inclusion of iodine, iron, copper or …

Root exudates are chemical compounds that are released from living plant roots and provide significant energy, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus sources for microbes inhabiting the rhizosphere. The exudates shape the microflora associated with the plant, as well as influences the plant health and productivity. Therefore, a better understanding of the trophic link that is established between the plant and the associated bacteria is necessary. In this study, a comprehensive survey on the utilization of grapevine and rootstock related organic acids were conducted on a vineyard soil isolate which is Pseudomonas mendocina strain S5.2. Phenotype microarray analysis has demonstrated that this …

Cancers involving the oral cavity, head, and neck regions are often treated with cisplatin. In cancer therapy, the main target is to eliminate unwanted cancerous cells. However, reports on the nonselective nature of this drug have raised few concerns. Incorrect nutritional habits and lifestyle practices have been directly linked to cancer incidence. Nutrients with antioxidant activity inhibit cancer cells development, destroying them through oxidative stress and apoptosis. -tocopherol, the potent antioxidant form of vitamin E is a known scavenger of free radicals. In vitro study exhibited effective antitumor activity of -tocopherol on ORL-48 at 2.5 +/- 0.42 mu g/mL. Cisplatin …
Genetic Analysis Of Serf Gene Function In Drosophila Melanogaster And Its Contribution To A Fly Model Of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Swagata Ghosh
Genetic Analysis Of Serf Gene Function In Drosophila Melanogaster And Its Contribution To A Fly Model Of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Swagata Ghosh
Theses and Dissertations--Biology
The Serf gene is evolutionarily highly conserved but its biological function is not known in any organism. In human, SERF1/H4F5 was first identified as a modifier of the disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA is caused by mutations in the Survival Motor Neuron 1(SMN1) gene leading to diminished levels of the Smn protein. More than 90% of patients with the most severe form of SMA have deletions that remove SERF1 as well as mutaions within SMN1. Hence, loss of Serf activity is hypothesized to exacerbate SMA disease progression. The primary motivation of this thesis was to test …

Physically effective neutral detergent fiber (peNDF) is the fraction of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) that stimulates chewing activity and contributes to the floating mat of large particles in the rumen. Multiplying dietary NDF by particle size has been used as an estimate of peNDF. In re-evaluating the concept of peNDF, we compared the use of peNDF as dietary NDF × particle size with the use of individual NDF and particle size descriptors (physically adjusted NDF; paNDF) when used with other physical and chemical diet descriptors to predict dry matter (DM) intake (DMI), rumination time, and ruminal pH in lactating dairy …

Expression Of Cytokine Genes And Receptors In White Blood Cells Associated With Divergent Body Weight Gain In Beef Steers, Amanda K. Lindholm-Perry, Virginia M. Cederberg, Jeremy R. Miles, Andrew P. Foote
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Previous work examining the transcriptome of steer tissue samples from animals with divergent gain have shown a relationship with the expression of genes with functions in immune and inflammatory pathways. The process of mounting an immune or inflammatory response is energetically expensive and variation in cytokine responses may affect cattle production traits. In addition, a previous study has identified variation in the transcript abundance of numerous genes, including the cytokine gene IL6ST, in the circulating white blood cells of pigs associated with high and low residual feed intake (RFI) lines. The aim of this study was to determine whether …

A Potential Role For Mtorc1/2 In Β2 Adrenergic Regulation Of Skeletal Muscle Glucose Oxidation In Models Of Intrauterine Growth Restriction, Robert J. Posont, Caitlin N. Cadaret, Taylor L. Barnes, Dustin T. Yates
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The epidemic of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) continues to be a leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality throughout the world. This condition has been linked to the development of metabolic health problems such as obesity, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and type 2 diabetes at all ages. Previous studies have demonstrated that IUGR fetal adaptations impair proper glucose homeostasis in part via changes in insulin responsiveness in key tissues including skeletal muscle and liver, and that these deficits persists into adulthood. Many components of insulin signaling pathways associated with glucose metabolic regulation have been evaluated in IUGR tissues for adaptive changes. …
Competent Hunger Strikers: Applying The Lessons From Northern Ireland To The Force-Feeding In Guantanamo, Sara Cloon
Competent Hunger Strikers: Applying The Lessons From Northern Ireland To The Force-Feeding In Guantanamo, Sara Cloon
Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy
The United States allows force-feeding of prisoners, regardless of their state of mind or mental health because they deem preservation of life as paramount. In the United Kingdom, a prisoner who is of a sound mind “can be allowed to starve himself to death.”1 This difference is due to the balance between the importance of preservation of life and of the right to self-determination and autonomy in medical decisions. My note will first briefly explore the history of force-feeding prisoners who are protesting for political purposes in both countries, and the relevant cases and statues that led up to the …
Prevalence Of Dental Pathology In A Juvenile Population From The Ancient Maya Site Of Altun Ha, Lindsey D. Lefebvre
Prevalence Of Dental Pathology In A Juvenile Population From The Ancient Maya Site Of Altun Ha, Lindsey D. Lefebvre
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The present research seeks to assesses the presence and prevalence of two distinct dental pathologies: linear enamel hypoplasia and caries in an ancient Maya juvenile subsample from Altun Ha, Belize spanning the Preclassic (ca. 600 B.C.) through the Terminal Classic (ca. 900 A.D.) periods. Teeth offer a remarkable wealth of information about the human experience in the past. Developmental and post-eruption pathology can provide insight into cultural and evolutionary processes by illuminating social and biological factors such as diet, weaning, illness, and overall health that manifest in observable changes to the composition of teeth. In addition, growth and developmental stages …

Emerging Endotypes Of Chronic Rhinosinusitis And Its Application To Precision Medicine, Dae Woo Kim, Seong H. Cho
Emerging Endotypes Of Chronic Rhinosinusitis And Its Application To Precision Medicine, Dae Woo Kim, Seong H. Cho
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a heterogeneous inflammatory disease with various underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms which translate to endotypes, in contrast to clinical phenotypes or histological subtypes. Defining endotypes can help clinicians predict disease prognosis, select subjects suitable for a specific therapy, and assess risks for comorbid conditions, including asthma. Therefore, with recent advancement of biologicals in CRS clinical trials, endotyping can be a breakthrough in treating recalcitrant CRS. CRS is caused by dysregulated immunologic responses to external stimuli, which induce various inflammatory mediators from inflammatory cells, including innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) and T lymphocytes as well as epithelial cells. Thymic stromal …

A compound was specifically designed to further aid research on the detection and treatment of folate receptor positive cancer cells. A small but complex peptide chain was commercially produced to have a flexible glycine spacer and a six-histidine tag. Histidine tagging was chosen for its ability to bind to nickel. The compound in this report was purified and analyzed by HPLC and confirmed via mass spectrometry. This binding capacity and the ability of folate conjugates to bind to cancer cell receptors have both been explored for the past quarter of a century [1-3]. Folate conjugates have been successfully used as …

In McDonnell v. United States, the Supreme Court constrained the reach of federal anti-corruption law, declared the inevitability and even desirability of representatives aggrandizing favored constituents, and asserted patronage to be a hallmark of democracy. The unanimous decision is the latest and clearest indication that the Court will frustrate regulations that require officials to discharge their roles with disinterested neutrality. This article demonstrates the impact of the Court's minimalist view of integrity through political philosophy and game theory. Given the Court's hostility to regulatory prohibition of self-interested political behavior, the final bulwark of public-minded governance is the electorate, which must …

Muddying The Waters: Catfish Inspection Authority Transitions To The Food Safety And Inspection Service, Michelle Johnson-Weider
Journal of Food Law & Policy
The Food and Drug Administration regulates the safety and labeling of almost all food in the United States other than meat, poultry, and egg products, which fall under USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Effective September 1, 2017, FSIS assumed inspection responsibility for catfish after years of Congressional lobbying by the small domestic catfish industry. This article examines how this unlikely legislative victory was won against free trade advocates representing much larger economic interests.

The stoichiometry of biological components and their influence on dissolved distributions have long been of interest in the study of the oceans. Cobalt has the smallest oceanic inventory of inorganic micronutrients and hence is particularly vulnerable to influence by internal oceanic processes including euphotic zone uptake, remineralization, and scavenging. Here we observe not only large variations in dCo:P stoichiometry but also the acceleration of those dCo:P ratios in the upper water column in response to several environmental processes. The ecological stoichiometry of total dissolved cobalt (dCo) was examined using data from a US North Atlantic GEOTRACES transect and from a …

Gold Nanoparticles In Clp Model And Mechanism In Bone Marrows Derived Macrophages Cell For Sepsis Severity Attenuation, Sujittra Taratummarat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Sepsis is still a major worldwide- public health problem as a leading cause of the high mortality rate condition. Sepsis is the inflammatory condition in host due to bacterial infections. Sepsis severity depends on the individual's immune responses and the organism virulence factor. The current strategies for sepsis treatment are based, mainly on, symptomatic treatment with antibiotics. However, the adjuvant therapy in sepsis is interesting. Gold nanoparticles are anti-inflammatory drug from the ancient time which is still currently used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, we hypothesized that gold nanoparticles could be effective in reducing an inflammation in sepsis …
