Supply Effects Of Implementing Donor Interval Strategies To Prevent Iron Deficiency In Blood Donors, Kevin Joseph Belanger
Supply Effects Of Implementing Donor Interval Strategies To Prevent Iron Deficiency In Blood Donors, Kevin Joseph Belanger
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Iron depletion in blood donors has been a topic of concern for the AABB over the past couple of years. In March 2017 the AABB published bulletin #17-02 recommending blood collection facilities implement additional actions to limit or prevent iron deficiency in blood donors. Three of the recommended strategies were to limit the donation interval for all individuals to two times in a 12-month period, limit 16-18 year olds to one donation in a 12-month period, and to limit pre-menopausal woman to one donation in a twelve month period. With a declining donor pool, the focus of this study is …
Differences In Behavioral And Physiological Variables Measured With Precision Dairy Monitoring Technologies Associated With Postpartum Diseases, I Ching Tsai
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
The transition period is defined as the three weeks before and three weeks after the cow calves. Transition cow diseases are considered production diseases. Precision dairy monitoring (PDM) technologies measure physiological, behavioral, and production indicators on individual animals to improve management strategies and farm performance. The objective of the first study was to assess how hypocalcemia, hyperketonemia, and metritis affected variables measured by PDM technologies. The objective of the second study was to use variables from multiple commercially available PDM to examine alert performance generated from different analyses.
Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Synthesized As Adsorbents For Ergot Alkaloids: Characterization And In Vitro And Ex Vivo Assessment Of Effects On Ergot Alkaloid Bioavailability, Manoj B. Kudupoje
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Alkaloid toxicities negatively impact livestock health and production and are of serious economic concern to animal industries. To date, few strategies have been developed to evaluate alkaloid levels in feed or to counteract alkaloid toxicities. The present research evaluated the applicability of imprinting technology to synthesize polymers that have potential to interact with ergot alkaloids and therefore reduce their bioavailability in the GIT. The studies also evaluated applicability of synthesized polymers for use in the ruminal environment using an in vitro ruminal fermentation model, and for the ability to ameliorate vasoconstriction using ex vivo myographic evaluations.

Medical Futility And Religious Free Exercise, Teneille R. Brown
Medical Futility And Religious Free Exercise, Teneille R. Brown
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
A tragic scenario has become all too common in hospitals across the United States. Dying patients pray for medical miracles when their physicians think that continuing treatment would render no meaningful benefit. This situation is unfortunately referred to as “medical futility.” In these cases, physicians, who are less likely than their patients to rely on God as a means of coping with major illness, are at an impasse. Their patients request everything be done so that they can have more time for God to intervene, but in the physician’s professional experience, everything will probably do nothing. What is the physician …

Relationships Between Levels Of Mindfulness And Subjective Well-Being In Undergraduate Students, Rikki J. Rosini, Amanda Nelson, Eve Sledjeski, Thomas Dinzeo
Modern Psychological Studies
College is often a period of unique demands and increased autonomy. The heightened stress associated with this period can contribute to mental health difficulties and maladaptive behaviors in a subset of students. The goal of the current study was to examine the role of mindfulness (i.e., awareness of, and appreciation for, the present moment and experiences) in experiencing negative emotions and lifestyle behaviors in 23 male and 19 female undergraduate students. Participants were randomly assigned to a mindfulness meditation condition or a cognitive activity control condition. Results suggest that higher levels of mindfulness are associated with better lifestyle habits, lower …

Workplace Management Knowledge And Support For Employee Breastfeeding Practices, Elizabeth Heimer
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Breastfeeding has many benefits to both mother and child. It also happens to have benefits to workplaces who support breastfeeding. Research shows that lack of environmental support of breastfeeding at the workplace may discourage women from exclusively breastfeeding the recommended amount of time of SIX months (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2012). To investigate the management knowledge and workplace breastfeeding support services, an online survey was sent out employees in management positions at selected workplaces in Faribault, Martin and Watonwan counties in Minnesota. Of the 98 selected participants, only 16 participants completed the survey. The study aimed to discover whether there …

Honors Undergraduate Theses
This Must Be the Place is a collection of short stories that take place in Massachusetts, America. Each story exists as a subtle celebration of the ordinary moments of our lives that softly, and gradually, shape us over time. This testament to the every-day is characterized by detailed, tender depictions of brief conversations, picnics in parks, afternoon car rides, and trips to the grocery store with past lovers. Although the narrators and other orbiting characters in the stories are all different, they are bound together by an insatiable curiosity and fascination with the world and the human condition.

Dna Methylation As A Mechanism For Caste System Determination In Solenopsis Invicta: Do The Genes Determine The Queen?, Kristen E. Walker
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
The emerging field of epigenetics seeks to study the interactions of the environment and other factors on gene expression in organisms. Epigenetic mechanisms involve modification to the DNA and/or surrounding structures, resulting in the activation or repression of gene expression. One epigenetic mechanism, DNA methylation, involves the addition of a methyl group to carbon 5 of cytosines in CpG dinucleotide regions in vertebrates and possibly other phyla. Vertebrate genomes tend to be globally methylated, whereas genes tend to be the target of methylation in insects. Genomic analyses of the order Hymenoptera revealed the evolutionary persistence of DNA methylation in social …

Essays On Organic Food Marketing In The U.S., Bo Chen
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
This dissertation examines organic food marketing from three aspects: household demand for organic food, household choice of retail formats accounting for preference organic food preference, and farmers’ joint adoption of organic farming and direct marketing methods. In Chapter Two, given the fast growth of private label milk and organic milk in the U.S., we estimate a censored demand system to study the demand relations among types of milk differentiated by brand types and organic status, using recent Nielsen Homescan data. We find that sociodemographic factors still play important roles in a household choice of milk types, and fluid milk is …

Pumping 9 To 5: Why The Flsa’S Provisions Provide Illusory Protections For Breastfeeding Moms In The Workplace, Kierstin Jodway
Belmont Law Review
On March 30, 2010, former President Barack Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which amended the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”) of 1938. Due to this amendment, the FLSA now requires employers to provide workplace accommodations for working mothers who wish to continue expressing breast milk after returning to work. Although this legislation was intended to be a step in support of transforming the role of women in the workplace, in practice its protections fail to advance the legal policies and progressive changes to the American workplace that our society has tirelessly pushed for. This …

Auditory cognitive training (ACT) improves attention in older adults; however, the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms are still unknown. The present study examined the effects of ACT on the P3b event-related potential reflecting attention allocation (amplitude) and speed of processing (latency) during stimulus categorization and the P1-N1-P2 complex reflecting perceptual processing (amplitude and latency). Participants completed an auditory oddball task before and after 10 weeks of ACT (n = 9) or a no contact control period (n = 15). Parietal P3b amplitudes to oddball stimuli decreased at post-test in the trained group as compared to those …

A Sustainability Index For Small Island Developing States., Philip Van Beynen, Fenda A. Akiwumi, Kaya Van Beynen
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
This paper proposes a novel approach to measuring the progress of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) towards sustainable development (SD) as set by the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030. Currently, these goals do not provide adequate guidance on how countries might measure their progress towards sustainability. We use these goals and a subset of their targets to develop an index with concrete targets, through the use of pertinent sustainability indicators, that SIDS should aim to achieve a sustainable society. In addition to the three categorical pillars of sustainable development (social, economic, and environmental), we included the category Climate Change and …
Countering The Majoritarian Difficulty, Amy Coney Barrett
Countering The Majoritarian Difficulty, Amy Coney Barrett
Constitutional Commentary, Vols 1–36 (1984–2022)
This Essay, written for a symposium on Randy Barnett’s new book Our Republican Constitution, questions whether courts are well suited to the role Barnett would have them assume. Barnett is deeply skeptical of democratic majorities, and he argues that judicial deference to them is inconsistent with the basic premises of the Constitution. Rather than affording statutes a presumption of constitutionality and reviewing them under the lenient “rational basis” test, Barnett insists that courts ought to treat statutes as presumptively unconstitutional and review them under the more aggressive pre-New Deal standard. I express doubt about the historical support for Barnett’s approach, …

Tensions In Aspirational Csr Communication—A Longitudinal Investigation Of Csr Reporting, Lisa Koep
Tensions In Aspirational Csr Communication—A Longitudinal Investigation Of Csr Reporting, Lisa Koep
Conference papers
A recent emergence of academic discourse within organisation and management scholarship is encouraging organisations to embrace the performative power of aspirational talk within corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication. However, there has been no empirical study to date to investigate the appropriateness of such encouragement. This paper analyses CSR reporting and underlying sensemaking processes to trace how far this academic departure from the dominant discourse of verification and standardisation is reflected and accepted within this practice. The process-focused, longitudinal study is based on a discursive analysis of Nestlé CSR reports, revealing the struggles between forward and backward facing statements, and tracing …

Changes In Soil Microbial Communities After 10 Years Of Winter Wheat Cultivation Versus Fallow In An Organic-Poor Soil In The Loess Plateau Of China, Hui Tian, Hui Wang, Xiaoli Hui, Zhaohui Wang, Rhae A. Drijber, Jinshan Liu
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Agricultural management methods, such as cultivation or fallowing, have led to significant changes in soil fertility and hence, crop yield. Such changes may have stemmed from changes in soil microbial communities and associated biogeochemical processes. This phenomenon is particularly true in organic-poor soil in the Loess Plateau of China. In this study, we examined three existing soil management regimes as part of a 10-year field experiment and evaluated their effects on fungal and bacterial community structures by performing high-throughput 454 pyrosequencing. These management regimes were (i) fertilized winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) (FW), (ii) continuous natural fallow with weeds …

Mapping And Characterization Of The Fefe Gene That Controls Iron Uptake In Melon (Cucumis Melo L.), Raghuprakash Kastoori Ramamurthy, Brian M. Waters
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Iron (Fe) deficiency in plants limits crop growth and productivity. Molecular mechanisms that plants use to sense and respond to Fe deficiency by coordinated expression of Feuptake genes are not fully understood. The C940-fe chlorotic melon (Cucumis melo) mutant known as fefe is unable to upregulate Fe-uptake genes, however, the FeFe gene had not been identified. In this study, we used two F2 mapping populations to map and identify the FeFe gene as bHLH38, a homolog of subgroup Ib bHLH genes from Arabidopsis thaliana that are involved in transcriptional regulation of Feuptake genes in partnership with the …
Parental Views Of Promoting Fruit And Vegetable Intake Among Overweight Preschoolers And School-Aged Children, Martha J. Nepper, Weiwen Chai
Parental Views Of Promoting Fruit And Vegetable Intake Among Overweight Preschoolers And School-Aged Children, Martha J. Nepper, Weiwen Chai
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Given the importance of parental influence on children’s eating habits, we explored perceptions of parents of overweight (body mass index–for-age percentile ≥85%) preschoolers (3-5 years) and overweight school-aged children (6-12 years) regarding challenges in promoting fruit and vegetable intake and how they and other family members influence their overweight children’s dietary habits. Focus groups were conducted with 13 parents of overweight preschoolers and 14 parents of overweight school-aged children. Codes and themes were developed by inductive data analysis. Four common themes were identified: short shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables prohibiting parents from purchasing, children’s taste changes in fruits …
Food Ingredients That Inhibit Cholesterol Absorption, Elliot D Jesch, Timothy P. Carr
Food Ingredients That Inhibit Cholesterol Absorption, Elliot D Jesch, Timothy P. Carr
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Cholesterol is a vital component of the human body. It stabilizes cell membranes and is the precursor of bile acids, vitamin D and steroid hormones. However, cholesterol accumulation in the bloodstream (hypercholesterolemia) can cause atherosclerotic plaques within artery walls, leading to heart attacks and strokes. The efficiency of cholesterol absorption in the small intestine is of great interest because human and animal studies have linked cholesterol absorption with plasma concentration of total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol. Cholesterol absorption is highly regulated and influenced by particular compounds in the food supply. Therefore, it is desirable to learn more about natural …
