Educating Mothers Of Obese Hispanic Preschoolers To Create Lifelong Healthy Habits, Lynette Marshall

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Problem and Background: Childhood obesity has doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 3 decades, increasing from 5% to 17% in one generation. The highest rates of childhood obesity are among Mexican Americans. Obesity can increase health morbidities, and as obese children continue to grow, these health concerns progress to adulthood. In spite of enhanced education and communication between mothers of obese children and their primary care providers, minimal improvement has taken place in terms of outcomes and lifestyle changes.

Methods: Fourteen obese Hispanic 2- to 5-year-olds and their mothers participated in the study. The children’s BMIs …

Follow Me: Building An Online Brand, Natalie Kelley '18 Jan 2017

Follow Me: Building An Online Brand, Natalie Kelley '18

Linfield Magazine

Kellie Bowen ’18 scrolls methodically through Facebook on a recent afternoon, Judas Priest screaming through her ear buds. The British band hooked her on heavy metal at age 10, the first time she heard the insistent thump of the bass, howl of the electric guitar and operatic singing of front man Rob Halford.

What do you do when you have a deep passion, like Bowen developed for metal? For Bowen, and others in today’s always-on, instantly connected digital world, the choice seemed obvious – create an online platform, connect with like-minded metalheads and motivate others along the way.

Therapeutic Potential Of Rhtrail For Malignant Melanoma, Katherine Ann Turner Jan 2017

Therapeutic Potential Of Rhtrail For Malignant Melanoma, Katherine Ann Turner

ETD Archive

The application of recombinant human Tumor Necrosis Factor-Related Apoptosis-Inducing Ligand (rhTRAIL) for the treatment of cancer holds great promise due to its ability to selectively induce apoptosis in cancer cells while not harming normal healthy cells. This is evident by the robust levels of apoptosis induced in malignant melanoma cells while no event of apoptosis was observed in the non-transformed counterpart of melanomas, melanocytes. However, the clinical utility of rhTRAIL is limited due to the heterogeneity seen in rhTRAIL-sensitivity among cancers. rhTRAIL-resistance is especially prevalent in cases of malignant melanoma. Melanoma rhTRAIL-resistance can be attributed to a number of different …

Age And Sex-Specific Effect Of Caloric Restriction On Circadian Clock And Longevity-Associated Gene Expression, Arten Andreyevich Astafev Jan 2017

Age And Sex-Specific Effect Of Caloric Restriction On Circadian Clock And Longevity-Associated Gene Expression, Arten Andreyevich Astafev

ETD Archive

The rhythms in the expression of circadian clock genes are affected by calorie restriction (CR), a dietary paradigm known to increase lifespan. In our current study, we show that circadian rhythms are influenced by sex and the effects of CR are different between males and females. In particular, we found a group of clock genes which showed a sex-dependent difference in expression, as well as in response to CR (Rev-Erb α, Ror γ and both Cryptochromes: Cry1 and Cry2 genes). Two clock genes showed no difference in expression but their response to CR showed sexual dimorphism (Ror α and Rev-Erb …

At The First Table, Jodi Campbell Jan 2017

At The First Table, Jodi Campbell

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Research on European food culture has expanded substantially in recent years, telling us more about food preparation, ingredients, feasting and fasting rituals, and the social and cultural connotations of food.

At the First Table demonstrates the ways in which early modern Spaniards used food as a mechanism for the performance of social identity. People perceived themselves and others as belonging to clearly defined categories of gender, status, age, occupation, and religion, and each of these categories carried certain assumptions about proper behavior and appropriate relationships with others. Food choices and dining customs were effective and visible ways of displaying these …

No. 06: The Urban Food System Of Nairobi, Kenya, Samuel Owuor, Andrea Brown, Jonathan Crush, Bruce Frayne, Jeremy Wagner

Hungry Cities Partnership

Nairobi is a city of stark contrasts. Nearly half a million of its three million residents live in abject poverty in some of Africa’s largest slums, yet the Kenyan capital is also an international and regional hub. In East Africa, rapid urbanization is stretching existing food and agriculture systems as growing cities struggle to provide food and nutrition security for their inhabitants. Nairobi is no exception; it is a dynamically growing city and its food supply chains are constantly adapting and responding to changing local conditions. It is also an international city and the extent to which it is food …

Life Course Health Development Outcomes After Prematurity: Developing A Community, Clinical, And Translational Research Agenda To Optimize Health, Behavior, And Functioning, Michael E. Msall, Sarah A. Sobotka, Amelia Dmowska, Dennis Hogan, Mary Sullivan

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Long-term survival for infants born extremely prematurely (gestation) and extremely low birth weight (<1000 >g) has increased dramatically due to obstetrical and neonatal advances. However, poverty, inequality, and resulting health disparities are significant contributors to women who give birth to preterm infants and also impact their children’s healthy development and education. While the vast majority of survivors of extreme prematurity do not have the most severe forms of neurodevelopmental disability (i.e., cerebral palsy, blindness, sensorineural hearing loss >55 dB, and intellectual disability), half of survivors can be expected to require special education services at kindergarten entry and during their school …

Purpose and Background/Significance: Postpartum depression (PPD) affects 12-20% of U.S. mothers. The PPD rates for women of Arabic descent are even higher (up to 37%). Higher acculturative stress and acculturation and lack of social support have been related to higher risk for PPD symptoms among immigrant women. No published research has investigated the relationship between acculturative stress, social support, and/ or acculturation and PPD symptoms among U.S. immigrant women of Arabic descent. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation research was to examine the impact of acculturative stress, social support, and acculturation on PPD symptoms among these women. The specific aims …

Anti-Cancer Effects Of Tocotrienols In Nsclc, Lichchavi Raj Raj Jan 2017

Anti-Cancer Effects Of Tocotrienols In Nsclc, Lichchavi Raj Raj

Wayne State University Dissertations

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death among cancers, with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounting for 80-85% of all lung cancers and a five-year survival rate of 5 % at stage IIIB. Delta-tocotrienol (δT) including other tocotrienol isomers has been shown to exhibit anti-tumor activity via inhibition of different signaling pathways in tumors including NSCLC. Previously we reported that δT reduced cell invasion via inhibition of the Notch-1 and NF-κb pathway.

Matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9) dependent cell migration and invasion are key processes in cancer metastasis. Hence, its suppression is a promising strategy for cancer therapeutics. …

Synergistic Effect Of Natural Antimicrobials Produced From Food On Foodborne Pathogens And Effect Of Meat Production Method On Quality And Shelf Life Of Meat, Mahdi Hassan Al-Ali Jan 2017

Synergistic Effect Of Natural Antimicrobials Produced From Food On Foodborne Pathogens And Effect Of Meat Production Method On Quality And Shelf Life Of Meat, Mahdi Hassan Al-Ali

Wayne State University Dissertations

Meat is highly perishable food since it contains sufficient nutrients needed to support the growth of microorganisms which is effect of nutritional value and spoilage of meat. There are many methods are available to control food pathogens in meat. Using natural antimicrobial may be is a good option because it is provide many benefits. This study showed the synergistic effect of individual and combinations of lactoferrin, lysozyme and nisin in-vitro and in-vivo (in meat) had significant effect (P < 0.05) on reducing the number of foodborne pathogens in meat. Toxigenic Staphylococcus aureus contamination in meat is a major problem in public health due to the production of heat-stable enterotoxins. Also, S.aureus expresses an many array of virulence factors contribute to the ability of S. aureus to cause infection, our results showed that high percentage (42.9) of S. aureus in meat and 80.9 % of S. aureus isolates contained at least one enterotoxin gene. The three most common enterotoxin genes in meat were sea gene (61.9%) followed by seh gene (33.3%) and sei gene (30.1). Some of S. aureus isolates contained more than one enterotoxin gene. In addition, our results indicated that S. aureus isolates from meat showed different antimicrobial resistance levels against fourteen antibiotics. Also, S. aureus multidrug resistant were high in meat. There are different types of meat based on the meat production method. Halal meat is produced without stunning prior to slaughter, resulting in a rapid and complete bleeding of animals. Our results showed that halal meat production method resulted in significantly lower residual heme iron than conventional method with stunning (non-halal method). Microbiological analyses of fresh meat samples showed that halal meat production method had significantly lower (P < 0.05) microbial count than non-halal meat method. Storage of meat is critical because during storage even with proper refrigeration, the meat ultimately undergoes deteriorative changes including microbial spoilage, oxidative changes. Our results indicated that meat production method significantly affects the meat quality not only for fresh meat but also during storage. Microbiological analyses of meat samples during storage for three weeks at 4°C showed that halal meat method had significantly lower (P < 0.05) microbial count than non-halal meat. Physiochemical analyses showed that quality indicators for meat such as lipid oxidation, drip loss, pH, and heme iron content were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in halal meat than non-halal meat during storage. Halal meat processing may be advantageous in reducing bacterial colonization, increasing the usable shelf life, and improving the quality of the fresh and stored meat.

Synthesis Of Netilmicin And Apramycin Derivatives For The Treatment Of Multidrug-Resistant Infectious Diseases, Amr Sayed Motawi Sonousi Jan 2017

Synthesis Of Netilmicin And Apramycin Derivatives For The Treatment Of Multidrug-Resistant Infectious Diseases, Amr Sayed Motawi Sonousi

Wayne State University Dissertations

The ever-growing bacterial resistance to existing antibiotics is alarming to humanity. Many researchers decided to revisit aminoglycosides with renewed emphasis on chemical modification as they have long been used as highly potent antibiotics for treating severe bacterial infections. The bactericidal effect of aminoglycosides is mainly due to protein synthesis inhibition by binding to the A-site of the bacterial ribosomes. However, the high potency and the broad spectrum of aminoglycosides has been outweighed by their side effects, especially ototoxicity, and by the resistance of pathogens. The goal of this research was the modification of existing aminoglycosides to develop derivatives which are …
