An Analysis Factors Influencing Demand For Poultry And Fish Feeds In Kenya, John Njenga Macharia Jan 2017

An Analysis Factors Influencing Demand For Poultry And Fish Feeds In Kenya, John Njenga Macharia

All Master’s Theses

Poultry and fish are important sub-sectors in Kenya providing rural farmer households with income and contributing to their food and nutritional security. Although ownership of these enterprises is not gender specific women are the ones involved in taking care of them. The study utilized cross-section data from a sample of 386 poultry farmers and 278 fish farmers randomly selected from three counties which are Nakuru, Kisii and Kirinyaga Counties. The feed demand for both poultry and fish enterprises were analyzed by estimating translog cost functions and a system of cost share functions for the major feed types used for poultry …

Mapping Exposure Of Cattle To Rift Valley Fever Virus Along Their Migratory Routes, Gladys Jebiwot Mosomtai Jan 2017

Mapping Exposure Of Cattle To Rift Valley Fever Virus Along Their Migratory Routes, Gladys Jebiwot Mosomtai

All Master’s Theses

Aedes mosquito is the primary vector for Rift Valley fever virus which affects humans and animals. Virus transmission pathways in animals occurs when bitten by infected mosquito or when viremic animals relocate to new regions with competent mosquitoes. Though Rift Valley fever is a transboundary disease with serious economic consequences, movement of viremic animals in search of pasture or trade in spreading the diseases is not fully understood. This research was undertaken in order to better understand the cattle spatial ecology, especially for pastrolist and their interaction with vectors habitat. Using 11 collared herds between 2012 to 2015, kernel density …

Association Between Proton Pump Inhibitor Use & Dementia: A Two-Fold Approach, Lisa Steers Jan 2017

Association Between Proton Pump Inhibitor Use & Dementia: A Two-Fold Approach, Lisa Steers

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

An observational study of data derived from the German Study on Aging, Cognition and Dementia indicated that proton pump inhibitor use was associated with dementia risk (Benmassaoud, McDonald, & Lee, 2016). The purpose of this study is to explore a two-fold approach between proton pump inhibitor use and dementia. This two-fold approach will first investigate the association between dementia and proton pump inhibitor use and secondly, the proposed pathophysiology behind it. This approach to proton pump inhibitor use and dementia will allow for providers to utilize the association and make decisions to avoid chronic proton pump inhibitor use in effort …

No. 04: The Urban Food System Of Kingston, Jamaica, Elizabeth Thomas-Hope, Robert Kinlocke, Therese Ferguson, Charmaine Heslop-Thomas, Beth Timmers Jan 2017

No. 04: The Urban Food System Of Kingston, Jamaica, Elizabeth Thomas-Hope, Robert Kinlocke, Therese Ferguson, Charmaine Heslop-Thomas, Beth Timmers

Hungry Cities Partnership

Kingston is a colonial city and, like the country of Jamaica more generally, was the product of early mercantilism moulded by colonialism, sugar plantations and slavery. As Jamaica’s capital, Kingston is an economic and administrative hub with a social geography marked by many of the characteristic fissures of emerging cities in transition economies. Its population is fed by a combination of food imports and domestic production from agricultural areas across the island. The key trading point for fresh produce flows into Kingston is Coronation Market in the city centre. Between 60% and 70% of fruit and vegetables arriving at Coronation …

No. 05: The Urban Food System Of Bangalore, India, Aditi Surie, Neha Sami

Hungry Cities Partnership

Bangalore (officially Bangaluru) is one of India’s fastest-growing cities. It is now the fifth-largest urban agglomeration in India, and the capital and primate city of the state of Karnataka in terms of area, population and economic output. With no natural features restricting its development, Bangalore’s spatial growth patterns are characterized by urban sprawl. Although it accounts for only 0.4% of the area of Karnataka and about 16% of the total population of the state, Bangalore has the highest district income in the state, contributing approximately 34% to Gross State Domestic Product at current prices and is a magnet for investment …

No. 25: Food Insecurity In Informal Settlements In Lilongwe, Malawi, Emmanuel Chilanga, Liam Riley, Juliana Ngwira, Chisomo Chalinda, Lameck Masitala Jan 2017

No. 25: Food Insecurity In Informal Settlements In Lilongwe, Malawi, Emmanuel Chilanga, Liam Riley, Juliana Ngwira, Chisomo Chalinda, Lameck Masitala

African Food Security Urban Network

Although there is widespread food availability in urban areas across the Global South, it is not correlated with universal access to adequate amounts of nutritious foods. This report is based on a household survey conducted in 2015 in six low-income informal areas in Malawi’s capital city, where three-quarters of the population live in informal settlements. Understanding the dimensions of household food insecurity in these neighbourhoods is critical to sustainable and inclusive growth in Lilongwe. The survey findings provide a complementary perspective to the 2008 AFSUN survey conducted in Blantyre, which suggested a level of food security in urban Malawi that …

No. 26: The Supermarket Revolution And Food Security In Namibia, Ndeyapo Nickanor, Lawrence Kazembe, Jonathan Crush, Jeremy Wagner Jan 2017

No. 26: The Supermarket Revolution And Food Security In Namibia, Ndeyapo Nickanor, Lawrence Kazembe, Jonathan Crush, Jeremy Wagner

African Food Security Urban Network

The surprisingly high rate of supermarket patronage in low-income areas of Windhoek, Namibia’s capital and largest city, is at odds with conventional wisdom that supermarkets in African cities are primarily patronized by middle and high-income residents and therefore target their neighbourhoods. What is happening in Namibia and other Southern African countries that make supermarkets so much more accessible to the urban poor? What are they buying at supermarkets and how frequently do they shop there? Further, what is the impact of supermarket expansion on informal food vendors? This report, which presents the findings from the South African Supermarkets in Growing …

Electroconvulsive Therapy In Geriatric Patients: A Literature Review And Program Report From Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, Usa, Andrew D. Snyder, Vasu Venkatachalam, Ananda Pandurangi

Psychiatry Publications

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective therapeutic intervention in the elderly patients with major depression, especially those with psychosis, suicidality, catatonia, nutritional compromise, and resistance to medications. Response rates can be as high as 80%. We present an extensive review of the relevant literature, provide a description of the ECT program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, USA, and present results of our experience with ECT in fifty elderly patients. The treatments were safe, well tolerated, and produced high response rates, variably between 68% and 84%. Patients in the long‑term maintenance ECT program continue to show sustained benefits from …

The Effects Of A Unit-Based Specialty Certification Preparation Class On Readiness And Knowledge To Take The Exam, Keith Bilbrew Jan 2017

The Effects Of A Unit-Based Specialty Certification Preparation Class On Readiness And Knowledge To Take The Exam, Keith Bilbrew

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This paper examines the effects of a unit-based GI specialty certification preparatory course on the participants’ knowledge and readiness to take the GI specialty certification examination. The participants were administered a pre-test, attended a preparatory class session, and then administered a post-test. The results were best illustrated through the use of the percentage score comparing the pre-test and post-test rather than individually by questions missed. The data gained from the first four exam questions was designed to illustrate personal readiness feelings.

The conclusions illustrate that there are significant increases in both knowledge and readiness when the unit-based preparatory class is …

The Potential Of Epigenetics Research To Transform Conceptions Of Phenotype Development, David S. Moore Jan 2017

The Potential Of Epigenetics Research To Transform Conceptions Of Phenotype Development, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Epigenetics remains an exciting subdiscipline of biology, generating discoveries and insights about development. Because epigenetic phenomena can draw attention to the dynamic, interactional, and probabilistic nature of phenotype development, epigenetics research could hasten the demise of both nature-nurture debates and reductionist, genetically determinist perspectives on phenotype development. However, new data alone will not inevitably transform conceptualizations of phenotype origins, because it remains possible to assimilate epigenetic phenomena into traditional conceptual frameworks; epigenetic discoveries could even strengthen biologically determinist conclusions if traditional conceptualizations are retained. Although epigenetics will not force conceptual transformation, epigenetics research encourages the dismissal of the nature-nurture dichotomy …
