Responses Of King Penguin Aptenodytes Patagonicus Adults And Chicks To Two Food-Related Odours, Gregory B. Cunningham, Sarah Leclaire, Camille Toscani, Francesco Bonadonna

Biology Faculty/Staff Publications

Increasing evidence suggests that penguins are sensitive to dimethyl sulphide (DMS), a scented airborne compound that a variety of marine animals use to find productive areas of the ocean where prey is likely to be found. Here we present data showing that king penguins Aptenodytes patagonicus are also sensitive to DMS. We deployed DMS on a lake near a king penguin colony at Ratmanoff beach in the Kerguelen archipelago. We also presented DMS to ‘sleeping’ adults on the beach. On the lake, penguins responded to the DMS deployments by swimming more, while on the beach, penguins twitched their heads and …

Do The Shuffle: Changes In Symbiodinium Consortia Throughout Juvenile Coral Development, Hannah G. Reich, Deborah L. Robertson, Gretchen Goodbody-Gringley

Biology

Previous studies of symbiotic associations between scleractinians corals and Symbiodinium have demonstrated that the consortium of symbionts can change in response to environmental conditions. However, less is known about symbiont shuffling during early coral development, particularly in brooding species. This study examined whether Symbiodinium consortia (1) varied in Porites astreoides on shallow (10m) and upper mesophotic (30m) reefs, (2) changed during coral development, and (3) influenced growth of juveniles in different environments. Symbiodinium ITS2 sequences were amplified using universal primers and analyzed using phylotype-specific primers designed for phylotypes A, B, and C. Adults from both depths were found to host …

Seed Biology And Yield Of Grain Crops, Dennis B. Egli Feb 2017

Seed Biology And Yield Of Grain Crops, Dennis B. Egli

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Book Gallery

Description from CABI (Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International):

This new edition of an established title examines the determination of grain crop yield from a unique perspective, by concentrating on the influence of the seed itself. As the food supply for an expanding world population is based on grain crops harvested for their seeds, understanding the process of seed growth and its regulation is crucial to our efforts to increase production and meet the needs of that population. Yield of grain crops is determined by their assimilatory processes such as photosynthesis and the biosynthetic processes in the seed, which are …

Effects Of An Amylopectin And Chromium Complex On The Anabolic Response To A Suboptimal Dose Of Whey Protein, T. N. Ziegenfuss, H. L. Lopez, A. Kedia, S. M. Habowski, J. E. Sandrock, B. Raub, Chad M. Kerksick, A. A. Ferrando

Faculty Scholarship

Background

Previous research has demonstrated the permissive effect of insulin on muscle protein kinetics, and the enhanced insulin sensitizing effect of chromium. In the presence of adequate whole protein and/or essential amino acids (EAA), insulin has a stimulatory effect on muscle protein synthesis, whereas in conditions of lower blood EAA concentrations, insulin has an inhibitory effect on protein breakdown. In this study, we determined the effect of an amylopectin/chromium (ACr) complex on changes in plasma concentrations of EAA, insulin, glucose, and the fractional rate of muscle protein synthesis (FSR).

Methods

Using a double-blind, cross-over design, ten subjects (six men, four …

© 2016 by the Ecological Society of America. The juxtaposition of plant-species invasions with latitudinal gradients in herbivore pressure is an important yet mostly unexplored issue in invasion biology. Latitudinal clines in defense and palatability to herbivores are expected to exist in native plant species but the evolution of these clines may lag behind for invasive plant species resulting in non-parallel latitudinal clines that may impact invasion success. Our study focused on a native and European invasive lineages of the common reed Phragmites australis in North America. Using native and invasive genotypes of P. australis collected across a 17° latitudinal …

Therapeutic Exploitation Of Metabolic Checkpoints In Cancer Cells, Deven S. Patel Feb 2017

Therapeutic Exploitation Of Metabolic Checkpoints In Cancer Cells, Deven S. Patel

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

During the G1 phase of the cell cycle, normal cells respond to growth factors and nutrients prior to entering S-phase to replicate its genome. We previously reported that the growth factor-mediated restriction point is distinguishable from a series of late G1 metabolic checkpoints mediated by essential amino acids (EAAs), the conditionally essential amino acid glutamine (Gln), and mTOR – the mammalian target of rapamycin. Mutations in genes encoding proteins that regulate G1 cell cycle progression are observed in virtually all cancers. We observed that cancer cells with K-Ras mutations bypass the late G1 Gln checkpoint when deprived of Gln and …

Zooarchaeological And Palaeoenvironmental Reconstruction Of Newly Excavated Middle Pleistocene Deposits From Elandsfontein, South Africa, Frances L. Forrest Feb 2017

Zooarchaeological And Palaeoenvironmental Reconstruction Of Newly Excavated Middle Pleistocene Deposits From Elandsfontein, South Africa, Frances L. Forrest

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Increased consumption of animal tissue is arguably one of the most important adaptive transitions in early hominin behavior. A dietary shift toward regular tool-assisted meat consumption and increased competition with the carnivore paleoguild likely helped shape many important hominin adaptations such as foraging patterns, habitat preferences, and social behaviors. Yet, the ecological and behavioral implications for increased hominin carnivory remain poorly understood. This dissertation examines the zooarchaeological and paleoenvironmental history of an important Acheulean hominin locality, Elandsfontein, South Africa (ca. 1.0 – 0.6 Ma). The goal is to begin addressing under-investigated aspects of Acheulean hominin behavioral ecology and place Acheulean …

Overpopulation And The Impact On The Environment, Doris Baus Feb 2017

Overpopulation And The Impact On The Environment, Doris Baus

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this research paper, the main focus is on the issue of overpopulation and its impact on the environment. The growing size of the global population is not an issue that appeared within the past couple of decades, but its origins come from the prehistoric time and extend to the very present day. Throughout the history, acknowledged scientists introduced the concept of “overpopulation” and predicted the future consequences if the world follows the same behavioral pattern. According to predictions, scientists invented the birth control pill and set population control through eugenics. Despite that, population continued to increase and fight with …

Do Savings And Assets Reduce Need-Based Aid For Dependent Students?, Margaret M. Clancy, Sondra G. Beverly

Center for Social Development Research

Federal programs such as Pell Grants provide financial aid for college according to need. Although the federal government is the principal source of need-based student aid, almost all states offer assistance. Rules governing student aid designate income as the primary indicator of ability to pay but assets are also considered. This policy brief documents the impact of assets on need-based aid for dependent students under current rules and formulas. The main observation is that savings and assets do not affect need-based aid for most dependent students. When assets count toward the EFC, savings held in 529 plan accounts have less …

Farm Production, Market Access And Dietary Diversity In Malawi, Stefan Koppmair, Menale Kassie, Matin Qaim

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Objective The association between farm production diversity and dietary diversity in rural smallholder households was recently analysed. Most existing studies build on household-level dietary diversity indicators calculated from 7d food consumption recalls. Herein, this association is revisited with individual-level 24 h recall data. The robustness of the results is tested by comparing household- and individual-level estimates. The role of other factors that may influence dietary diversity, such as market access and agricultural technology, is also analysed. Design A survey of smallholder farm households was carried out in Malawi in 2014. Dietary diversity scores are calculated from 24 h recall data. …
