Conserved Patterns Of Integrated Developmental Plasticity In A Group Of Polyphenic Tropical Butterflies, Erik Van Bergen, Dave Osbaldeston, Ullasa Kondandaramaiah, Oskar Brattström, Kwaku Aduse-Poku, Paul M. Brakefield

Publications and Research

Background: Developmental plasticity is thought to have profound macro-evolutionary effects, for example, by increasing the probability of establishment in new environments and subsequent divergence into independently evolving lineages. In contrast to plasticity optimized for individual traits, phenotypic integration, which enables a concerted response of plastic traits to environmental variability, may affect the rate of local adaptation by constraining independent responses of traits to selection. Using a comparative framework, this study explores the evolution of reaction norms for a variety of life history and morphological traits across five related species of mycalesine butterflies from the Old World tropics.

Developing Local Health Policy: Profiling Needs And Opportunities In The Municipality Of Quito, Ecuador, Maria Isabel Roldós, Claudia Hopenhyan, Fernando Sacoto, Kathy Bustamante

Publications and Research

We describe the steps taken and analysis applied in developing a local health policy agenda for the city of Quito, in Ecuador. In 2014, the Health Commissioner’s Office of the Municipality of Quito analyzed the city’s epidemiological health profiles, social determinants of health, the legal authority of the Municipality, and relevant literature to understand the city’s health burden and develop a Ten-Year Health Plan (2015–2025). Results revealed that Quito’s population suffered from noncommunicable chronic diseases (diabetes and hypertension) and identified the primary risk factors (poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and resulting overweight or obesity). Other common conditions included respiratory diseases, mental …

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) is a legume crop that is resilient to hot and drought‐prone climates, and a primary source of protein in sub‐Saharan Africa and other parts of the developing world. However, genome resources for cowpea have lagged behind most other major crops. Here we describe foundational genome resources and their application to the analysis of germplasm currently in use in West African breeding programs. Resources developed from the African cultivar IT97K‐499‐35 include a whole‐genome shotgun (WGS) assembly, a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) physical map, and assembled sequences from 4355 BACs. These resources and WGS sequences of …

Research Brief: "Analysis Of Nutritional Habits And Intake Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Veterans With Peripheral Arterial Disease", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University Feb 2017

Research Brief: "Analysis Of Nutritional Habits And Intake Of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids In Veterans With Peripheral Arterial Disease", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the nutritional intakes of veterans with peripheral arterial disease, and expands on previous studies. For policy and practice, the research shows that physicians should play a role in educating veterans about long-term effects of their nutritional intakes, and that the DoD and VHA should create an educational program about nutritional intake. Suggestions for future research include using daily or weekly food diaries to increase reporting accuracy and using a more representative sample in randomized controlled tests.

An Overall And Dose-Response Meta-Analysis Of Red Blood Cell Distribution Width And Cvd Outcomes, Haifeng Hou, Tao Sun, Cheng Li, Yuanmin Li, Zheng Guo, Wei Wang, Dong Li

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is the coefficient of variation of red blood cell size, considered to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to comprehensively synthesize previous studies on RDW and CVD outcomes through an overall and dose-response meta-analysis. PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched systematically for English and Chinese language publications up to November 30, 2015. We extracted data from publications matching our inclusion criteria for calculating pooled hazard ratio (HR), which was used to assess prognostic impact of RDW on CVD. Twenty-seven articles, consisting of 28 studies and 102,689 participants (mean age …

Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Residency

Worldwide, Shigellosis is a significant public health issue, associated with nearly one million deaths annually. About half a million cases of Shigella infection are reported annually in the United States. Shigella bacteremia is uncommon and generally seen in children and immunocompromised adults. We present a case of a Shigella sonnei bacteremia with marked hepatic derangement in a 27-yearold previously healthy homosexual male with history of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, who presented to the emergency room with a 4-day history of loose watery stool, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, and yellow skin of 2-day duration. He reports similar diarrhea illness in two …

Demographics And Food Waste Trends Of Common Ground Garden Csa Members In Central Minnesota, Kendra M. Butkowski

Forum Lectures

The Common Ground Garden is a ministry of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict, and provides CSA produce shares for 18 weeks to community members. A summer research project was conducted to evaluate the general demographics and food waste habits of members of Common Ground. Access to fresh, in-season produce is a struggle in many parts of the country, and this pilot study was designed to better understand the demographics, vegetable consumption, and food waste behaviors of the members of this particular CSA. Investigating the accessibility of local agriculture and CSA programs, as well as the health demographics …

Perceived Social Norms And Health Behaviors: Are College Drinking Behaviors Mediated By University Attachment?, John C. Wheeler Feb 2017

Perceived Social Norms And Health Behaviors: Are College Drinking Behaviors Mediated By University Attachment?, John C. Wheeler

OSRI Journal of Student Research and Innovation

The purpose of this study was to assess school attachment in college students and alcohol use. High perceptions of peer alcohol use were expected to be positively correlated with rates of individual student use. Also, as students reported higher rates of attachment to their university, rates of alcohol use would decrease. Furthermore, it was expected that affiliation with a fraternity or sorority would alter the relationship between university attachment and alcohol use. Existing data from LaChausse’s (2012) CSUSB Student Health Survey was used; 311 participants completed the survey, which included measures of current alcohol and other drug use, perceived CSUSB …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Repeated exposure to sugary, fatty, and salty foods often enhances their appeal. However, it is unknown if exposure influences learned palatability of foods typically promoted as part of a healthy diet. We tested whether the palatability of pulse containing foods provided during a weight loss intervention which were particularly high in fiber and low in energy density would increase with repeated exposure. At weeks 0, 3, and 6, participants (
