The Association Of Health Literacy, Understanding Of Health Information, And Food Choice In Female Caregivers, Sukhee Ahn, Jiwon Oh, Jisoon Kim, Seyeon Park, Hyeji Yoo
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Female caregivers play an important role to take care of their family health and food choice when one of family members is sick. Caregivers with inadequate health literacy skills have been shown to have poorer understanding of anticipatory guidance such as healthy food choice. Little is known about the relationships among health literacy, understanding of health information, and food choice in female caregivers at hospitals. This study was to explore the relationships among health literacy, understanding of health information, and food choice in female caregivers of adult patients in Korea.
Methods: Using a cross-sectional survey design, 217 female caregivers …

Purpose: To examine the association of kangaroo mother care (KMC) on energy utilization and procedural pain as evidenced by altered biochemical markers of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) degradation, (hypoxanthine (Hx), xanthine (Xa), and uric acid (UA) and oxidative stress (allantoin).
Background: Premature infants admitted to the NICU are at a high risk of suffering the consequences of early maternal separation due to their physiological and metabolic immaturity. Bonding processes of mother and infant may also be at risk from early maternal separation. Consequently, infants become vulnerable to a myriad of internal and external events that increase energy loss. Three …

Genotype imputation is a powerful strategy for achieving the large sample sizes required for identification of variants underlying complex phenotypes, but imputation of rare variants remains problematic. Genetically isolated populations offer one solution, however population-specific reference panels are needed to assure optimal imputation accuracy and allele frequency estimation. Here we report the Anabaptist Genome Reference Panel (AGRP), the first whole-genome catalogue of variants and phased haplotypes in people of Amish and Mennonite ancestry. Based on high-depth whole-genome sequence (WGS) from 265 individuals, the AGRP contains >12 M high-confidence single nucleotide variants and short indels, of which ~12.5% are novel. These …

Effect Of Massage Balls On Breast Engorgement For Taiwanese Postpartum Women: A Randomized Clinical Trial, Hsiu-Jung Lee
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: The multitude of benefits that come from breastfeeding has been very well established and recognized. Breast engorgement, however, is a common problem of early postpartum breastfeeding, one that contributes to lower willingness to breastfeed. The development of effective strategies aimed at increasing milk secretion is, therefore, highly important, for it helps to prolong the duration of breastfeeding. It is incumbent upon health-care providers to find the best strategies in assisting women to both manage the discomfort of breast engorgement and increase milk secretion. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of massage balls toward treating breast engorgement …

Walking For Our Health: Evaluation Of Randomized Spousal Physical Activity Pilot Intervention, Elizabeth A. Richards, Melissa M. Franks, Meghan M. Mcdonough, Sharon L. Christ
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Addressing physical inactivity among older adults is a crucial public health challenge as less than 5% of older adults meet physical activity (PA) recommendations (Troiano et al., 2008) and PA declines with age (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012; de Rezende et al., 2014). Physical inactivity and sedentary behavior are associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality and multiple chronic conditions (Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee, 2008; de Rezende, Rey-López, Matsudo, & do Carmo Luiz, 2014).
Despite concerted efforts, physical inactivity remains a major public health concern, especially among older adults who struggle to maintain PA over …

The Design Of Giardia And The Genesis Of Giardiasis, Alan L. Gillen, Frank Sherwin
The Design Of Giardia And The Genesis Of Giardiasis, Alan L. Gillen, Frank Sherwin
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Giardia is a genus of protozoa discovered in 1681. Six morphologically distinct species are recognized. It mainly attaches in the upper GI tract of a wide variety of vertebrates (including zebrafish), often with beaver and muskrat as reservoirs/carriers but exhibiting minimal—if any—disease in some animals. Giardia is usually non-pathogenic in the human population, even in children if exposed early in life. Although Giardia can be pathogenic, some strains colonize the gut with no malady. This parasite is not invasive and only serious infections depress the small intestine. Giardia are pear-shaped, have an adhesive disc for attaching to enterocyte cells in …

Impact Of Niche Preparation On Nursing Knowledge Of Geriatric Patient Care, Tru Brynes
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The aging of the United States population has profound implications for nursing practice and health care costs (Capezuti, Bolt, Cline, Dickson, Rosenberg, Wagner, Shuluk, & Nigolian, 2012). Their health care utilization are three to five times more than younger patients, which accounted for $444 billion or 23% of the health care spending in 2008 and 13 % of the U.S federal budget (Wier, Pfuntner, & Steiner, 2010). Research shows units that have implemented the Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) model have better patient outcomes in terms of preventing falls and fall related injuries, decreased restraint use, early recognition of confusion or …

Publications and Research
Impairments in placental development can adversely affect pregnancy outcomes. The bioactive nutrient choline may mitigate some of these impairments, as suggested by data in humans, animals, and human trophoblasts. Herein, we investigated the effects of maternal choline supplementation (MCS) on parameters of fetal growth in a Dlx3+/− (distal-less homeobox 3) mouse model of placental insufficiency. Dlx3+/− female mice were assigned to 1X (control), 2X, or 4X choline intake levels during gestation. Dams were sacrificed at embryonic days E10.5, 12.5, 15.5, and 18.5. At E10.5, placental weight, embryo weight, and placental efficiency were higher in 4X versus 1X choline. Higher concentrations …

Assessing The Utility Of Phenylene Ethynylenes Against Candida Species Pathogens, Rina Sylejmani
Assessing The Utility Of Phenylene Ethynylenes Against Candida Species Pathogens, Rina Sylejmani
Biomedical Engineering ETDs
Candida species are the cause of many bloodstream infections through contamination of indwelling medical devices. These infections account for a 40% mortality rate, posing a significant risk to immunocompromised patients. Traditional treatments against Candida infections include amphotericin B and various azole treatments. Unfortunately, these treatments are associated with high toxicity, and resistant strains have become more prevalent. As a new frontier, light-activated phenylene ethynylenes have shown promising biocidal activity against Gram-positive and -negative bacterial pathogens, as well as the environmental yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this thesis, we monitored the viability of Candida species after treatment with a cationic conjugated …

Introducing Global Health Nursing To University-Bound Students: A Case Study, Helen Frances Baker, Blake Tyler Mcgee
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Pre-college summer programs expose secondary school students to university life and potential career paths in the U.S., but they have historically under-involved schools of nursing. In particular, global health nursing has received negligible attention in such programs, even though it is a rapidly growing specialty for which the nursing community is actively developing core definitions (Wilson et al., 2016) and texts (Upvall & Leffers, 2014). We took advantage of the Emory University Pre-College Program to reach high-achieving, university-bound students who may not otherwise be exposed to global health nursing when selecting their area of study. We hypothesize that introducing …
