The Value Of Diabetes Self-Management Programs For African Americans In Community-Based Settings: A Review Of The Literature, Pandora Goode Phd, Dnp, Fnp-C, Robin Bartlett Phd, Rn-Bc, Debra Wallace Phd, Rn, Faan
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
Abstract
When looking at the number of African Americans suffering with diabetes, it is quite evident that traditional methods such as providing pamphlets or videos on diabetes have been unsuccessful when implemented as the only strategy. Community-based interventions have been documented in the literature as being successful and can have compelling influences on beliefs and health care behaviors. By recognizing the community as an excellent conduit through which diabetes education, health promotion, and preventive health care interventions can occur, can reduce diabetes disparities globally. Therefore, the purpose of this manuscript is to examine community-based health promotion literature relevant to African …

General Nutrition Knowledge And Perceived Stress In A Rural Female Faith Community, Lori Alexander, M. Laurie Branstetter Dnp
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
In rural America, high rates of obesity are influenced by a lack of education and limited community resources. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of an educational intervention on recommended nutrition and body mass index knowledge and to describe the perceived stress in a rural female faith community. A quantitative quasi-experimental pre-test post-test research design was used. English speaking female participants (N=49) 18 years of age and older from two rural community churches received an educational intervention based on the Health Belief Model. Participants completed a demographic survey, self-reported height and weight, general nutrition …
The Effects Of Poor Maternal Nutrition On Offspring Growth And Maternal And Offspring Inflammatory Status During Gestation, Amanda Jones
The Effects Of Poor Maternal Nutrition On Offspring Growth And Maternal And Offspring Inflammatory Status During Gestation, Amanda Jones
Doctoral Dissertations
Breeding and management of pregnant females are essential components of livestock production. Improper gestational management creates maternal stressors which negatively affect prenatal and postnatal offspring development. We hypothesized that 1) using transabdominal ultrasound, pregnancy diagnosis would be accurate during early gestation in ewes and measure fetal growth patterns during mid-gestation, and 2) inflammation may be a mechanism contributing to suboptimal offspring performance when maternal nutrition is poor during gestation. To investigate, 99 ewes were scanned three times per wk between d26 and d40 of gestation. The sensitivity and specificity of pregnancy diagnoses were >90% from d33 onward, coinciding with visualization …

Exploring The Informational And Recreational Needs Of The Elderly: Library Users In Temperance Town, South Africa, Mae Kuscus Ms, Madeleine C. Fombad Dr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The need to access and use information is necessary in all stages of our physical and mental development. Although most elderly people continue to lead productive and active lives beyond retirement, they are often a neglected group of library users, treated with little dignity and respect. Temperance Town, Gordon’s Bay Library in Western Cape, South Africa is one of the “previously disadvantaged” community libraries that was affected by the injustices and discriminatory laws propagated by the apartheid government. As a result, a majority of the elderly persons in this community had very limited opportunities to obtain skills and education during …

Early care and education (ECE) settings play an important role in shaping the nutrition and physical activity habits of young children. Increasing research attention is being directed toward family child care homes (FCCHs) specifically. However, existing measures of child care nutrition and physical activity environments are limited in that they have been created for use with center-based programs and require modification for studies involving FCCHs. This paper describes the modification of the Environment and Policy Assessment and Observation (EPAO) for use in FCCHs.

Performance Profiles Of Collegiate And Master’S Swimmers: A Validation Study, Lyle Edmond Robelot
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this proposal is to link the gold standard power test on land (Wingate test) to an in-water power test. There is a lack of information on power in the water and would be beneficial in tracking swimmers progress throughout a season and between seasons. Power curves of individuals on the Wingate test will be compared to those of In-water tests to see weather this water test is valid. The experiment will follow IRB rules and regulation and the staff will adhere to the safety conditions set forth by the IRB.

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
Firefighters’ self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) protects the respiratory system during firefighting but increases the physiological burden. Extended duration SCBA (>30 min) have increased air supply, potentially increasing the duration of firefighting work cycles. To examine the effects of SCBA configuration and work cycle (length and rest), 30 firefighters completed seven trials using different SCBA and one or two bouts of simulated firefighting following work cycles common in the United States. Heart rate, core temperature, oxygen consumption, work output and self-reported perceptions were recorded during all activities. Varying SCBA resulted in few differences in these parameters. However, during a second …

A commentary on Evaluating the Role of Seagrass in Cenozoic CO2 Variations
by Brandano, M., Cuffaro, M., Gaglianone, G., Pettricca, P., Stagno, V., and Mateu-Vicens, G. (2016). Front. Environ. Sci. 4:72. doi:10.3389/fenvs.2016.00072
Brandano et al. (2016) sought to quantify the role of seagrasses in removing atmospheric CO2 during the past 65 million years. To date, this estimate has been missing from the literature. Moreover, as the authors point out, there has so far been little attention paid to the role of calcium carbonate formation (CaCO3; inorganic carbon precipitated by calcifying organisms) in seagrass carbon budgets; much …

Effect Of Ferulic Acid And Caffeic Acid On Acrylamide Formation And Elimination, Wu Haojie, Yu Miao, Huang Caihuan, Ou Shiyi
Food and Machinery
In this study, caffeic and ferulic acids were used to test the effect on acrylamide formation and elimination in model reaction systems. In asparagine/glucose reaction system, addition of caffeic and ferulic acid at the concentration of 25 mmol/L and 250 mmol/L inhibited acrylamide formation. However, they increased acrylamide formation below 2.5 mmol/L. It was found that both of phenolic acids increased acrylamide elimination when ferulic acid or caffeic acid were heated with acrylamide, but the effect is not obvious, so effect of caffeic acid and ferulic acid influenced on acrylamide content in Maillard reaction system mainly influence on acrylamide formation …

Background: Cancer cachexia is largely irreversible, at least via nutritional means, and responsible for 20–40% of cancer-related deaths. Therefore, preventive measures are of primary importance; however, little is known about muscle perturbations prior to onset of cachexia. Cancer cachexia is associated with mitochondrial degeneration; yet, it remains to be determined if mitochondrial degeneration precedes muscle wasting in cancer cachexia. Therefore, our purpose was to determine if mitochondrial degeneration precedes cancer-induced muscle wasting in tumour-bearing mice. Methods: First, weight-stable (MinStable) and cachectic (MinCC) ApcMin/+ mice were compared with C57Bl6/J controls for mRNA contents of mitochondrial quality regulators in quadriceps muscle. Next, …
