Employment, Poverty, And Public Assistance In The Rural United States, Rebecca K. Glauber, Andrew P. Schaefer
Employment, Poverty, And Public Assistance In The Rural United States, Rebecca K. Glauber, Andrew P. Schaefer
Carsey Publications
In this brief, authors Rebecca Glauber and Andrew Schaefer provide a glimpse of the economic and demographic characteristics of life in the rural United States. Using data from the American Community Survey, they compare those living in low- and lower-middle-income counties to those living in upper-middle- and high-income counties. Additionally, they compare counties at the extremes, where median incomes are in the bottom and top 10 percent of the income distribution. They report that nearly 75 percent of low-income rural counties in the United States are in the South. Compared to lower-income rural counties, higher-income rural counties have a larger …

Clustering Diabetes Appointments And Education, April Pugh
Clustering Diabetes Appointments And Education, April Pugh
Doctoral Dissertations and Scholarly Projects
Diabetes impacts the lives of millions of Americans, and the number is growing rapidly every year. Diabetes education has been demonstrated to have a positive impact of the self-management of this chronic disease and effective in the reduction of A1C, weight, and blood pressure. Barriers to attendance at both diabetes education classes and provider appointments are varied with lack of transportation and available time cited as two of the many reasons, especially in the rural and medically underserved regions of the country. The project assessed a process improvement intervention clustering diabetes education with provider appointments to increase attendance and decrease …

Background
There is strong association between childhood rotavirus, diarrhoea, climate factors and malnutrition. Conversely, a significant nutritional transition (reduced under-nutrition) with a concurrent increasing trend of rotavirus infection in last decade was also observed among under 5 children, especially in developing countries including Bangladesh. Considering the pathophysiology of rotavirus, there might be an interaction of this nutrition transition which plays a pivotal role in increasing rotavirus infection in addition to climate and other man-made factors in urban areas such as Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Clean Water, Clean Life: Promoting Healthier, Accessible Water In Rural Appalachia, Erin Arcipowski, John Schwartz, Lisa Davenport, Meghan Hayes, Tracy Nolan
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
In the rural Appalachian region of the United States, thousands of residents struggle with issues of water quality and accessibility. Vulnerabilities of poverty, isolation, and rough geographical terrain complicate life for Appalachians who need access to adequate water supply and septic systems. In 2013, an inter-professional team of nursing, architecture, engineering, and law enforcement faculty and students developed a water-focused collaboration with community members in southeastern Kentucky. Greater accessibility to clean drinking water is a critical need in the area. Collaborative community engagement yielded effective and sustainable interventions. Inter-professional teams completed N=30 comprehensive home assessments examining factors such as water …
Urbanization Alters Communities Of Flying Arthropods In Parks And Gardens Of A Medium-Sized City, Edward Lagucki, Justin D. Burdine, Kevin E. Mccluney
Urbanization Alters Communities Of Flying Arthropods In Parks And Gardens Of A Medium-Sized City, Edward Lagucki, Justin D. Burdine, Kevin E. Mccluney
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Urbanization transforms undeveloped landscapes into built environments, causing changes in communities and ecological processes. Flying arthropods play important roles in these processes as pollinators, decomposers, and predators, and can be important in structuring food webs. The goal of this study was to identify associations between urbanization and the composition of communities of flying (and floating) arthropods within gardens and parks in a medium-sized mesic city. We predicted that flying arthropod abundance and diversity would respond strongly to percent impervious surface and distance to city center, measurements of urbanization. Flying arthropods were sampled from 30 gardens and parks along an urbanization …

The Need For A School-Based Student Obesity Prevention Program: Perceptions Of Rural Elementary Principals, Travis D. Armstrong, Clementine Msengi, Sandra Harris
The Rural Educator
This phenomenological study investigated the perceptions of elementary principals regarding the need for a school-based student obesity prevention at eight, rural elementary schools in North Central Texas. Face to face interviews were the primary method of data collection from the eight participants. Findings indicated that school-based obesity prevention programs are needed to decrease the occurrence of student obesity, improve student diets and health related behaviors, educate families on obesity prevention measures, and improve the academic performance of students. The need to inform and include relevant stakeholders in the creation and implementation of school-based obesity prevention programs was identified as an …

Investigation In The Use Of Video Technology With Adults With Moderate Intellectual Disability, To Teach Culinary Arts Using Self- Modelling And Overt Auditory Self-Prompting In Their Own Home, Mark William Farrell
Theses, Doctoral
Investigation in the use of video technology with adults with moderate intellectual disability, to teach culinary arts using self- modelling and overt auditory selfprompting in their own home An important rationale of special education, from an adult perspective, is to support people with intellectual disability to live independently. The Government’s central policy objective for people with disabilities is contained in ‘Towards 2016’ and states that they should be supported to lead full and independent lives. This presents many challenges for adult educators in building the skill set for individuals to reach this goal, especially for people with learning difficulties and …

Gender And Education In Guinea: Increasing Accessibility And Maintaining Girls In School, Rebecca Coleman
Gender And Education In Guinea: Increasing Accessibility And Maintaining Girls In School, Rebecca Coleman
Journal of International Women's Studies
In West Africa, girls’ enrollment in primary and secondary schools has significantly increased since the 1980’s; however, there is still a great disparity between male and female enrollment and participation. This paper will cover the lasting influences of the gap between male and female education accessibility in the country of Guinea. Issues such as teen marriage, gender based violence, funding, and infrastructure will be discussed. Alternatives to address these issues will be compared, focusing heavily on what the Guinean population can accomplish themselves, without generous help from the outside. Solutions to this problem include addressing the cultural bias against putting …

Contextualising African Women’S Empowerment In Agriculture: Challenges From Climate Change And Mineral Extraction Perspectives, Lere Amusan, Oluwole Olutola
Journal of International Women's Studies
Most cultures in Africa view women’s role as subordinate to that of men. The patriarchal nature of human and social systems that are more or less an enduring feature of a typical African society, dictates that women are inferior and less powerful when compared to their male counterpart. Hence, their role should naturally be of a domestic calling. In addition to being relegated to the background of domestic affairs, most women function as food producers, at least, at the subsistence level. These dual roles are mostly unpaid, under-valued and, therefore, hardly accounted for in monetary terms. Rather than being beneficiaries …

Climate change is a clear and imminent threat to the world today. While there are Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for teaching climate change in the classroom, students may have a difficult time understanding the seriousness of the issue. One of the standards in the NGSS is for students to develop their own explanation of climate change and its impact. That’s where AgroSphere comes in. AgroSphere is a web-based app that utilizes NASA open-source software WorldWind. WorldWind allows developers to create their own Java, Android, or web-based apps that can display data on the globe. AgroSphere displays historical weather (climate) …
