Redefining Aging In Hiv Infection Using Phenotypes, David M. Stoff, Karl Goodkin, Dilip Jeste, Maria Marquine Oct 2017

Redefining Aging In Hiv Infection Using Phenotypes, David M. Stoff, Karl Goodkin, Dilip Jeste, Maria Marquine

ETSU Faculty Works

Purpose of review: This article critically reviews the utility of “phenotypes” as behavioral descriptors in aging/HIV research that inform biological underpinnings and treatment development. We adopt a phenotypic redefinition of aging conceptualized within a broader context of HIV infection and of aging. Phenotypes are defined as dimensions of behavior, closely related to fundamental mechanisms, and, thus, may be more informative than chronological age. Primary emphasis in this review is given to comorbid aging and cognitive aging, though other phenotypes (i.e., disability, frailty, accelerated aging, successful aging) are also discussed in relation to comorbid aging and cognitive aging. Recent findings: The …

Metabarcoding Analyses Of Gut Microbiome Compositions In Red Abalone (Haliotis Rufescens, Swainson, 1822) Fed Different Macroalgal Diets, Jinchen Guo

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Growth and gut microbiome composition of Red abalone, Haliotis rufescens, fed different diets were compared after six months. The diet treatments were starvation and three fresh macroalgal diets (Macrocystis pyrifera, Palmaria mollis, and Ulva lactuca). Abalone shell length and wet in-shell mass were measured for growth comparisons across treatments. Contents of the buccal cavity, intestine, and stomach, as well as seawater and macroalgal tissue samples, were also collected monthly for 16S rRNA Illumina MiSeq sequencing. Shell length and wet in-shell mass showed significant difference among treatments (two-way ANOVA test, F(2,74)=4.26, p=0.019) and months (two-way ANOVA …

Maximizing Use Of An Extension Beef Cattle Data Set: Part 3—Weights And Growth, Jennifer M. Ramsay, Lauren L. Hulsman Hanna, Kris A. Ringwall

Journal of Extension

Previously, we described calving distribution and reproductive rates from CHAPS20Y, an Extension beef cattle data set. In this article, we describe CHAPS20Y data on birth weight, weaning weight, pounds weaned per cow exposed, calf age at weaning/weighing, average daily gain, weight per day age, frame score, and cow age, weight, and condition. Yearly mean weights and growth are consistent over the 20-year period, with variation among herds. Breed, management, and environmental differences may explain some of the variation. Our analysis of the CHAPS20Y data provides Extension professionals with expanded knowledge of beef cattle weights and growth and, accordingly, improved ability …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Diffuse radiation can increase canopy light use efficiency (LUE). This creates the need to differentiate the effects of direct and diffuse radiation when simulating terrestrial gross primary production (GPP). Here, we present a novel GPP model, the diffuse-fraction-based two-leaf model (DTEC), which includes the leaf response to direct and diffuse radiation, and treats maximum LUE for shaded leaves (ɛmsh defined as a power function of the diffuse fraction (Df)) and sunlit leaves (ɛmsu defined as a constant) separately. An Amazonian rainforest site (KM67) was used to calibrate the model by simulating the linear relationship …

Sleep, Internalizing Symptoms, Executive Functioning, And Diabetes Outcomes In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, Ashley Charlene Moss Oct 2017

Sleep, Internalizing Symptoms, Executive Functioning, And Diabetes Outcomes In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, Ashley Charlene Moss

Dissertations (1934 -)

Insufficient sleep is a nearly universal problem during adolescence and is likely associated with various biopsychosocial and contextual factors present with this developmental period. Youth with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) may experience greater sleep difficulties, poorer sleep quality, and greater daytime sleepiness/fatigue compared to healthy youth. Also, sleep difficulties are associated with poorer diabetes outcomes (e.g., treatment adherence). Understanding how sleep may impact illness management during adolescence is critical given increasing rates of non-adherence during this developmental period. Although research suggests poor sleep is associated with decreased neurocognitive functioning and increased internalizing behavior among healthy youth, limited research has …

Effects Of Livestock Grazing On Rangeland Biodiversity: A Meta-Analysis Of Grouse Populations, Seth J. Dettenmaier, Terry A. Messmer, Torre J. Hovick, David K. Dahlgren

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Livestock grazing affects over 60% of the world’s agricultural lands and can influence rangeland ecosystem services and the quantity and quality of wildlife habitat, resulting in changes in biodiversity. Concomitantly, livestock grazing has the potential to be detrimental to some wildlife species while benefiting other rangeland organisms. Many imperiled grouse species require rangeland landscapes that exhibit diverse vegetation structure and composition to complete their life cycle. However, because of declining populations and reduced distributions, grouse are increasingly becoming a worldwide conservation concern. Grouse, as a suite of upland gamebirds, are often considered an umbrella species for other wildlife and thus …

Refusing To Treat Noncompliant Patients Is Bad Medicine, Jessica Mantel Oct 2017

Refusing To Treat Noncompliant Patients Is Bad Medicine, Jessica Mantel

Cardozo Law Review

Government health programs and private payors have adopted various reforms that fundamentally transform the physician-patient relationship. Public reporting on how well physicians perform on various quality and cost metrics, as well as payment reforms that link physicians' reimbursements to their performance on these metrics, incentivize physicians to improve the quality and efficiency of care they provide to patients. Less appreciated, however, is that these reforms also create strong incentives for physicians to reject patients who do not abide by their physician's medical opinion, including recommendations that the patient adopt healthier behaviors. These noncompliant patients increasingly willfind themselves rejected by physicians, …

Islamic Moral Values And End-Of-Life Care: Examining The Intersection Of Religious Beliefs And The U.S. Health Care System, Cortney Hughes Rinker, Oliver Pelland, Serena Abdallah

Southern Anthropologist

End-of-life care is a central aspect of health care in the United States. Given the country’s diverse population, it is crucial to understand different religious perspectives on policies, standards of care, and medical practices. Religious beliefs impact the ways that end-of-life care is perceived and administered to patients of different faiths. This article examines Islamic approaches to end-of-life care within the context of the US health care system. Drawing on data collected through a literature review and interviews with Muslim physicians, imams, and scholars with extensive knowledge of Islam, four areas are identified in which end-of-life recommendations in the US …

Mechanism Of Action Of American Ginseng And Its Components In The Treatment Of Ulcerative Colitis, Anusha Chaparala

Theses and Dissertations

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), mainly ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn’s disease (CD), are chronic, idiopathic, inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract affecting millions of people worldwide. The incidence of IBD is steadily increasing in the modern world due to changes in dietary habits and other environmental influences that originated from industrialization. The etiology is poorly understood but is believed to be a combination of genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and overactive immune system. UC is characterized by inflammation and ulceration of colonic mucosa and rectum and has a higher incidence than CD. Aside from severely affecting the quality of life of the …

Use Of Lipid Emulsion Therapy In Local Anesthetic Overdose, Ozgur Karcioglu Oct 2017

Use Of Lipid Emulsion Therapy In Local Anesthetic Overdose, Ozgur Karcioglu

Saudi Medical Journal

The use of intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) therapy as antidote in systemic toxicity of certain agents has gained widespread support. There are increasing data suggesting use of ILE in reversing from local anesthetic-induced systemic toxicity severe, life-threatening cardiotoxicity, although findings are contradictory. Efficiency of ILE was demonstrated in animal studies in the treatment of severe impairment of cardiac functions, via a mechanism for trapping lipophilic drugs in an expanded plasma lipid compartment (“lipid sink”). In patients with hemodynamic compromise and/or cardiovascular collapse due to lipid-soluble agents, ILE may be considered for resuscitation in the acute setting by emergency physicians. The …
