Multifactorial Examination Of Sex-Differences In Head Injuries And Concussions Among Collegiate Soccer Players: Ncaa Iss, 2004-2009., Avinash Chandran, Mary J Barron, Beverly J Westerman, Loretta Dipietro
Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND:
While head injuries and concussions are major concerns among soccer players, the multifactorial nature of head injury observations in this group remains relatively undefined. We aim to extend previous analyses and examine sex-differences in the incidence of head injuries, odds of head injuries within an injured sample, and severity of head injuries, among collegiate soccer players between 2004 and 2009.
METHODS:
Data collected within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Injury Surveillance System (ISS) between the years of 2004 and 2009, were analyzed in this study. Unadjusted rate ratios (RR), compared incidence rates between categories of sex, injury mechanism, …

Modifiable And Non-Modifiable Factors Related To The Macular Pigment Optical Density (Mpod) In A Population Of College-Aged Adults, Genesis Gisselle Guerra Gaitan
LSU Master's Theses
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness among the elderly worldwide. Retinal problems, specifically in the macula, hold potential for development of AMD. Macular pigment optical density (MPOD) gives a measure of the thickness of the macula and therefore health of the macula. Some of the populations at risk for development of AMD include being white, female, and having light eye color. Factors related to the development of the disease have been divided into modifiable and non-modifiable; non-modifiable include a genetic predisposition. Control of modifiable factors, including body mass index (BMI) and diet [dietary intake …

Cholesterol homeostasis is maintained through concerted action of the SREBPs and LXRs. Here, we report that RNF145, a previously uncharacterized ER membrane ubiquitin ligase, participates in crosstalk between these critical signaling pathways. RNF145 expression is induced in response to LXR activation and high-cholesterol diet feeding. Transduction of RNF145 into mouse liver inhibits the expression of genes involved in cholesterol biosynthesis and reduces plasma cholesterol levels. Conversely, acute suppression of RNF145 via shRNA-mediated knockdown, or chronic inactivation of RNF145 by genetic deletion, potentiates the expression of cholesterol biosynthetic genes and increases cholesterol levels both in liver and plasma. Mechanistic studies show …

Optimization Of Overhead Irrigation In Relation To Irrigation Water Use Efficiency In The Louisiana Nursery Industry, Mark A. Wilson
LSU Master's Theses
Irrigation efficiency is an essential component of nursery production in the United States. To increase productivity of Louisiana growers, a series of studies were conducted to evaluate current nursery water practices. The objectives were to determine current irrigation practices; evaluate actual water usage; and compare nursery media for water utilization. A mailed survey determined that the majority of growers used can yard production (63%), overhead irrigation (79%), had no irrigation manager (82%) and did not collect/reuse water(61%); 50% do not test/calibrate their irrigation system. Based on this information, five nurseries using overhead irrigation were selected to determine water application and …

Isolation, Detection, And Prevention Of Foodborne Bacteria In Irrigation Water And Dairy Food, Mohammed Saleemallah Alhejaili
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Foodborne microorganisms can be beneficial to humans or cause disease. Salmonella is one of the most causative foodborne disease outbreaks in the U.S.A. Salmonella has been detected in surface water used in irrigation, and can survive for weeks to years in water. The purpose of the study was to detect low levels of Salmonella spp. by comparing surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ) filtration and Activated Carbon (AC) filtration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) method 1200. Also, to determine the generic E.coli counts and if there was a direct correlation of Salmonella to generic E. coli in irrigation water. The EPA …

African Indigenous Knowledge: An Underutilised And Neglected Resource For Development, Njabulo Bruce Khumalo, Charity Baloyi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Indigenous knowledge points to the fact that Africa has been able to generate, test and apply knowledge through its own methodologies and approaches. This knowledge sustained communities for years prior to colonialism which somehow downplayed the value of indigenous knowledge and promoted western knowledge systems. Colonialism created dependence on western knowledge systems and Africa has over the years neglected its own rich indigenous knowledge. This paper sought tohighlight challenges faced in the quest to incorporate IK into developmental goals and projects. Furthermore, the study also sought to recommend ways through which Africans can promote IK in its developmental projects. A …

Allocation In The Life Cycle Assessment (Lca) Of Flax Fibres For The Reinforcement Of Composites, John Summerscales, Nilmini P. J. Dissanayake
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The ISO 14040 series of standards describe the principles and framework for the conduct of life cycle assessment (LCA). The system defines four phases: (i) definition of the goal and scope of the LCA, (ii) the life cycle inventory analysis (LCI), (iii) the life cycle impact assessment (LCIA), and (iv) the life cycle interpretation. The standards do not describe the LCA technique in detail, nor do they specify methodologies for the individual phases of the LCA. Dependent of the goal and scope, there can be very different outcomes from the analysis. This paper considers how the outcomes might change for …

Socio-Ecological Approaches To Obesity Prevention: A Collection Of Exploratory Studies, Denise Marie Holston
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Community-based, obesity prevention approaches based on the Socio-Ecological model may be effective in addressing factors within rural communities that influence resident’s ability to meet dietary and PA recommendations that will allow the potential reduction of obesity and chronic disease rates among this population. To understand how socio-ecological, community-based approaches to obesity prevention can be implemented by the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) (the Healthy Communities program), three inter-related studies were undertaken.
The objective of the first study was to describe the nutrition and physical activity (PA) environment of rural Tensas Parish, Louisiana. The study used the Reduced-item Nutrition Environment …

© 2017 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The emerging research on automatic identification of user’s contexts from the cross-domain environment in ubiquitous and pervasive computing systems has proved to be successful. Monitoring the diversified user’s contexts and behaviors can help in controlling lifestyle associated to chronic diseases using context-aware applications. However, availability of cross-domain heterogeneous contexts provides a challenging opportunity for their fusion to obtain abstract information for further analysis. This work demonstrates extension of our previous work from a single domain (i.e., physical activity) to multiple domains (physical activity, nutrition and clinical) for context-awareness. We propose multi-level …

Out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) affects over 300,000 Americans per year.1 Many factors affect the outcomes and overall OHCA survival in a community; some of these include an individual’s characteristics such as age, co-morbid conditions, availability of an AED on scene, time to CPR, and the characteristics of the hospital they are treated at.1,2 Directly following resuscitation from cardiac arrest, the individual is at risk of developing numerous problems caused by sequelae of ischemic injury sustained during the arrest. The national average rate of survival to discharge is only 10%.2,3 Many of these factors are modifiable and provide an …

Mass Rearing Of The Greater Wax Moth, Galleria Mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), For Small-Scale Laboratory Studies, M. A. Mohamed, H. C. Coppel
The Great Lakes Entomologist
A technique was developed to mass rear the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella, economically (ca. 0.2 cents per larva exclusive of 3-5 h of labor costs per week). Mortality in the egg and early larval stages was ca. 48% whereas in later larval and pupal stages it was ca. 10% and 27% respectively. With a fecundity of 650-1120 eggs per female, and notwithstanding the high egg and early larval mortality, the procedure easily provides a self-sustaining culture with high yields of all stages.
