Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) And Its Impact On Actions: Exploring Social Change Through College Students, Rachael Leigh Suffrin

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The present study has three goals. First, it validates a new Sensitivity to Employer Social Responsibility Scale, used to help understand how undergraduate students perceive their values related to corporate social responsibility (CSR) impact their prospective employment decisions. Second, this study examines whether students value working for a socially responsible employer and third, how (a) social justice experiences in college and/or (b) social justice attitudes and beliefs may predict how students perceive the impact their CSR values have on their prospective employment decisions. Results indicate that students who participated in the study overall positively endorsed a degree of sensitivity to …

Interpretations Of Jesus And The Virgin Mary In The Quran And The Bible: A Possible Contribution To Muslim-Christian Cooperation?, Jon Armajani

The Journal of Social Encounters

This essay explores Muslim and Christian understandings of Jesus and his mother Mary, which may provide a basis for possible cooperation between the two religious communities. The similarities and differences in views are discussed, with an understanding that there are differences in views not only between but also within the two religious communities. The essay concludes with a discussion of seven types of interreligious dialogue as articulated by Sallie B. King, and how they apply to Muslim-Christian dialogue related to Jesus and Mary.

Developing Cultural Competence In Practicing Nurses: A Qualitative Inquiry, Michelle L. Edmonds, Jeane Richards Jun 2017

Developing Cultural Competence In Practicing Nurses: A Qualitative Inquiry, Michelle L. Edmonds, Jeane Richards

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background/Introduction: Multicultural societies are becoming more prevalent across the globe. Nurses, providing holistic care to patients from many cultures, must demonstrate culturally competency in their daily practice so as to provide patient-centered care (Maher-Lorentz, 2008). The American Nurses Association has, since 1991, advocated for culturally appropriate nursing care to be delivered to patients in all settings (ANA, 1991). The Joint Commission has indicated the importance of culturally appropriate communication for patient-centered care and included this in the 2012 accreditation standards (The Joint Commission, 2010). Research regarding culturally-competent care among nursing students has been recently conducted in nursing education. However, few …

The Riddle Of Malnutrition : The Long Arc Of Biomedical And Public Health Interventions In Uganda, Jennifer Tappan Jun 2017

The Riddle Of Malnutrition : The Long Arc Of Biomedical And Public Health Interventions In Uganda, Jennifer Tappan

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

More than ten million children suffer from severe acute malnutrition globally each year. In Uganda, longstanding efforts to understand, treat, and then prevent the condition initially served to medicalize it, in the eyes of both biomedical personnel and Ugandans who brought their children to the hospital for treatment and care. Medicalization meant malnutrition came to be seen as a disease—as a medical emergency—not a preventable condition, further compromising nutritional health in Uganda.

Rather than rely on a foreign-led model, physicians in Uganda responded to this failure by developing a novel public health program known as Mwanamugimu. The new approach prioritized …

Settler Visions Of Health: Health Care Provision In The Central African Federation, 1953-1963, Catherine Janet Valentine Jun 2017

Settler Visions Of Health: Health Care Provision In The Central African Federation, 1953-1963, Catherine Janet Valentine

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines healthcare provision in the Central African Federation, the late colonial union between the British colonies of Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, and Nyasaland (the later independent nations of Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi respectively). Unusually in federal formations, healthcare delivery in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland became a federal function. "Settler Visions of Health" seeks to explain how the white settler elite reconciled the language of development and multiracial partnership with the underlying values of a settler society. Throughout its short existence, the Federal Health Service maintained a celebratory narrative of success designed to legitimize and justify both …

Knowledge Of Hiv/Aids Among Women In Rural Ugandan Villages, Linda S. Johanson Jun 2017

Knowledge Of Hiv/Aids Among Women In Rural Ugandan Villages, Linda S. Johanson

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Rates of HIV have been decreasing in Uganda, however these rates, attributed to behavior change through education, have slowed in recent years (Hearst, Kajubi, Hudges, Maganda, and Green, 2012). It is unclear how much education about this issue reaches remote rural villages in the country of Uganda, and how the condition is understood by the people who live there. Women in sub-saharan Africa have a disproportionate risk for HIV infection (Harrison, 2014). Basic correct understanding of the transmission, risk, symptoms, and treatment for HIV/AIDS will impact prevention behaviors for women in this country. Ultimately control of HIV/AIDS impacts global …

Increasing Engagement On Nonprofit Facebook Pages Through Photos, Christina T. Guiang

University Honors Theses

Social media has become an immensely valuable tool for nonprofit marketing strategies. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter provide free tools for nonprofit organizations to spread awareness, build their organizational identity, communicate with their stakeholders, and inspire action and involvement. These outlets have therefore, for many organizations, become an essential component of their marketing communications. Developing effective strategies that maximize social media post engagement is beneficial in aiding organizations to achieve their marketing goals. This study focuses specifically on Facebook photo posts due to the platform’s widespread use and the high potential of visual media to provoke audience …

Nursing Discharge Education For The Baby Boomer Generation, Sarah Spradlin May 2017

Nursing Discharge Education For The Baby Boomer Generation, Sarah Spradlin

2017 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The Baby Boomer Generation is the largest generation to come into the health care system, but there is a lack of research in the nursing field on their unique needs for health care education. A 13- question descriptive study was created to assess Baby Boomer patient preferences on nursing discharge education and factors affecting their learning in the hospital. The survey was completed by 30 patients at a south-central U.S. hospital. The findings demonstrated that the majority of patients preferred face-to-face interaction with nursing staff and handouts they can take home to refer back to, once out of the hospital. …

Learning Preferences Of A Multigenerational Nursing Workforce, Matthew Spradlin May 2017

Learning Preferences Of A Multigenerational Nursing Workforce, Matthew Spradlin

2017 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Learning is an ongoing and never ending aspect of every nurse’s life. The nursing workforce can be difficult to teach due to the multiple generations. The purpose of our study was to determine how each generation preferred to receive their educational experiences so that training sessions could be more focused and effective in the future. We developed our own survey and distributed it via email to all nurses at a hospital in North Texas in order to determine their preferences for ongoing education. We found that there were some educational preferences all generations were equally fond of, such as receiving …

I Presume You Have Heard Of Dr. Livingstone, Mary Eakins Apr 2017

I Presume You Have Heard Of Dr. Livingstone, Mary Eakins

Honors Projects

David Livingstone is perhaps one of the most famous missionaries of the nineteenth century. During the mid-1800’s he captivated the imaginations of the western world with his achievements and explorations in Africa- his walk across the continent, the infamous meeting with Mr. Stanley, and his grand funeral leading to his burial in Westminster Abbey. During his lifetime he was an explorer, an anthropologist, a botanist, a geographer, a cartographer, a doctor, and most importantly in his eyes, a missionary to the unreached people of Africa.

Altruism: Biological Rationale Vs. Christian Love Command, Chris Porter, Landry Guin Apr 2017

Altruism: Biological Rationale Vs. Christian Love Command, Chris Porter, Landry Guin

Dialogue & Nexus

The idea of altruism and self-sacrifice appears counter to a simple view of evolution. While a “survival of the fittest” mindset occurs in some Darwinian views, there are counter-examples of animals and humans with cooperative, pro-social, and even self-sacrificial behavior. Social animals such as bees and ants work for the community and provide for the queen due to a haploid-diploid system of genetic relatedness. Some humans sacrifice their lives and money to promote the well-being of others even without genetic relatedness and, rarely, without reciprocity. We will explore why human animals often help people who are less fortunate by giving …

"They Take The Rags Off The Bush:" Arkansas' Bowie Brigade, Anthony Charles Rushing Apr 2017

"They Take The Rags Off The Bush:" Arkansas' Bowie Brigade, Anthony Charles Rushing

Theses and Dissertations

This project examines Arkansas’ 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s role in Operation Iraqi Freedom II (2004-2005) through an exhibit at the Arkansas National Guard Museum. It provides citizens of Arkansas a detailed example of their soldiers’ experiences in wartime, preserving their honor, dedication, service, and sacrifice for posterity. Additionally, it demonstrates how National Guard units can perform full spectrum combat operations at the same level as active duty forces, contrary to recent conclusions This is important, as the size of the US military is reduced, the National Guard will be required to play an even more active role.

Cuba’S Use Of Medical Diplomacy: Establishing Global Significance And Influence, Juan Herzberg Apr 2017

Cuba’S Use Of Medical Diplomacy: Establishing Global Significance And Influence, Juan Herzberg

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research project aims to assess the importance of medical diplomacy as a foreign policy strategy for Cuba, as well as a means by which the small island nation has managed to gain geopolitical prominence in the current international political sphere. Through the analysis of Cuba’s medical internationalism, its impact on the health of populations across the world, its oil-for-doctors trade agreements with Venezuela, and its involvement in initiatives like the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), it becomes easier to see the link between medical diplomacy and geopolitical power, which Cuba has been successfully garnering since its 1959 Revolution …
