Influencers Experienced In The College Search Process By International Chinese Undergraduate Students Who Use Educational Agents, Brocdyl Joseph Porta Dec 2017

Influencers Experienced In The College Search Process By International Chinese Undergraduate Students Who Use Educational Agents, Brocdyl Joseph Porta

Open Access Dissertations

This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews of five International Chinese Undergraduate (ICU) students attending a research university in South Florida to better understand how they experienced the college choice process. Unlike traditional U.S. native-born students, the literature indicates that some international students may have influencers linked to the financial costs associated with hiring educational agents in the college choice phases (Pimpa, 2003; Hossler & Gallagher, 1987), parental and familial aspirations for student, and institutional ranking information connected to marketing materials. Using thematic analysis, the following two major themes associated to four subthemes emerged as general findings from these analyses: 1) …

Toward Effective Dengue Fever Surveillance And Case Management In The Dominican Republic: Perceptions From Patients, Practitioners And Policy-Makers, Deborah D. Roque Dec 2017

Toward Effective Dengue Fever Surveillance And Case Management In The Dominican Republic: Perceptions From Patients, Practitioners And Policy-Makers, Deborah D. Roque

Open Access Theses

Leading among arboviral disease morbidity and mortality is dengue fever with an estimated 390 million infections a year of which 96 million present clinical manifestations. In the Dominican Republic (DR), dengue fever is endemic where high incidence and outbreaks continue, with the most recent epidemic occurring in 2015. Failed prevention and control efforts have placed an onus on early diagnosis and treatment to aid in surveillance and help reduce dengue disease burden. This study explored dengue care, management and prevention perceptions among three main actors of the dengue diagnostic-management-surveillance scheme: patients, practitioners, and policy-makers. Participant observation, structured interviews, semi-structured interviews, …

Refugee Policy & Social Integration In Jordan: Structural Barriers To Enclave Formation Among Forced Migrants To Jordan, David Nardelli Dec 2017

Refugee Policy & Social Integration In Jordan: Structural Barriers To Enclave Formation Among Forced Migrants To Jordan, David Nardelli

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The displacement of over five million Syrian refugees in the past six years has brought much needed attention to issues of forced migration. Today, the majority of the world’s refugees and internally displaced reside in urban areas of middle to low-income states, particularly in Asia and Africa. There is, however, a significant gap in research on self-settled refugees in the Middle East and their integration into host countries. In addition, much of the literature that does exist focuses on policies regarding labor policies yet ignores housing and settlement pattern issues and its impact on integration and community growth. This research …

How Do You Like Me Now? An Examination Of College Students’ Use Of Social Media Sites, James D. Wheeler Iii

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The digital era and the rise of new technology within everyday experiences has led young adults to seek out social media sites as a means of socializing, identity building, self-expression, and seeking validation from peers and friends. The previous work of scholars expresses how social media sites have become a predominate form of communication amongst young adults, and are a social hub for establishing communities that foster particular ideals and online behavior of ‘digital natives’ (those born right before and after the general introduction of digital technologies). This research project contextualizes young adults’ use and behaviors on social media by …

The wearing of hijab by Muslim women is a divisive issue around the world. The history of veiling by Turkish women is important because it is so controversial and because of its global relevance in contexts of economics, politics, and culture. The headscarf, as a form of art and power, has significant influence on the freedoms of women. The goal of this research project is to elevate Western understanding of Turkish women’s headscarf veiling as it is located in economic, political, cultural, and socio-historical contexts and as it intersects with artistic influence and design. This research on the contradictions and …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Caterpillars are the soft bodied larvae of lepidopteran insects. They have evolved to occupy an extremely diverse range of natural environments and to locomote in complex three-dimensional structures without articulated joint or hydrostatic control. These animals make excellent bio-inspiration for the field of soft robotics because of their diversity and adaptability. In this paper, we present SquMA Bot, a caterpillar-inspired soft robot. The robot's body is primarily composed of a soft viscoelastic foam, and it is actuated using a motor-tendon system. SquMA Bot is able to mimic the inching gait of a caterpillar and can use its flexible body to …

The ignorance of the current state of gender equality in the film industry is not just on the rise, but the knowledge of such has been non existent for decades. Women were largely involved in the film industry during the turn of the century, until sound film became popular and Hollywood turned into a big business. As of 2016, only seven percent of the top filmmakers are women. The lack of female filmmakers in Hollywood is not only effecting the women who are trying to make a living doing what they love, but also the young and old female audiences …

The study is driven by three questions; how is the PRC’s preferential policy for ethnic minority students implemented at a university level? Is the preferential policy …

Optimizing Transposon Mutagenesis In Vibrio Strains To Identify Genes Involved In Antibiotic Production, Mahnur Khan Dec 2017

Optimizing Transposon Mutagenesis In Vibrio Strains To Identify Genes Involved In Antibiotic Production, Mahnur Khan

Honors Projects

Based on previous studies that have shown the competitive nature of non-pathogenic environmental strains of Vibrio, we hypothesize that environmentally derived bacteria can inhibit Vibrio pathogens, and possibly be a source of novel antibiotics. A previous experiment performed in the lab tested environmental Vibrio strains from various habitats against the pathogenic strains, Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Of the 3,456 strains collected, members of the Wildschutte lab identified 102 environmental strains of Vibrio that inhibited the growth of both pathogens. The data suggests that environmental Vibrio strains directly inhibit the growth of related pathogens. Our project involves the …

Food Watch: Helping People To Live A Healthy Life, Jiaqi Yang

Theses

Food is one of the great pleasures of life. However, due to cultural backgrounds and physical conditions, the same food is not suitable for all consumers. Peanuts, dairy products, and wheat can be deadly for people with food allergies. These consumers must carefully check the ingredients of all of their food.

This article outlines a system that combines product labeling and mobile technology to help those with food allergies and food intolerances easily manage their diet and protect their health.

With this new system, a user with dietary restrictions only needs to scan a label barcode with a mobile phone …

Information Security Collaboration Formation In Organisations, Safa N Sohrabi, C Maple, T Watson, Sm Furnell

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Collaboration between employees in the domain of information security efficiently mitigates the effect of information security attacks on organisations. Collaboration means working together to do or to fulfil a shared goal, the target of which in this paper is the protection of the information assets in organisations. Information Security Collaboration (ISC) aims to aggregate the employees’ contribution against information security threats. This study clarifies how ISC is to be developed and how it helps to reduce the effect of attacks. The socialisation of collaboration in the domain of information security applies two essential theories: Social Bond Theory (SBT) and the …
