An Attempt To Profile Persistent Online Students And Graduates, Randy Vincent Stach
An Attempt To Profile Persistent Online Students And Graduates, Randy Vincent Stach
Education
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the characteristics of online graduates, and characteristics of students who persist online with their coursework, could be identified. A mixed methods approach was used incorporating both quantitative and qualitative research methods. First, student demographic information was analyzed to identify any patterns or trends of persistent online students. Second, a survey was utilized to collect data from current students and graduates from online programs. Third, qualitative data was collected through conducting phone interviews of online graduates who have graduated in the last five years. Conclusions were drawn from the research and advice …

Processing Trade-Offs In A Cellulosic Biorefinery, Nurun Nahar
Processing Trade-Offs In A Cellulosic Biorefinery, Nurun Nahar
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
Commercial scale cellulosic biorefineries face significant challenges to produce low-cost fermentable sugar from biomass. Biorefinery processing steps are interrelated and trade-offs between process parameters impact the cost and efficiency of the overall system. Although densified biomass as a biorefinery feedstock would improve biomass supply logistics, it has not been considered viable due to high energy and emissions associated with the densification process. However, the potential synergies of biomass densification with downstream processing steps are critical. An energy-efficient system with improved supply logistics, reduced severity pretreatment, and improved hydrolysis efficiency will lower the cost of sugar production from cellulosic biomass. The …
Glutaraldehyde Removal From Produced Water Using Photolysis And Photocatalysis, Soklida Hong
Glutaraldehyde Removal From Produced Water Using Photolysis And Photocatalysis, Soklida Hong
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
Glutaraldehyde (GA) has been used extensively as a biocide in hydraulic fracturing fluids leading to the contamination of the compound in produced water. In this study, the performances of photolysis and photocatalysis for removal of GA in synthetic produced water were investigated. The photolytic degradation rate of GA increased with increasing incident ultraviolet light intensity and decreasing pH. Increasing initial GA concentration resulted in a reduced rate of GA degradation. At high salt concentrations, similar to the levels found in produced water, the photodegradation rate of GA was better than those at zero/low salt concentrations. In photocatalytic experiments, GA could …
The Need To Move: Exploring Landscape Connectivity Through The Eyes Of The Northern Leopard Frog, Heather Lynn Inczauskis
The Need To Move: Exploring Landscape Connectivity Through The Eyes Of The Northern Leopard Frog, Heather Lynn Inczauskis
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
The northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens) is a species that depends on landscape connectivity to complete its lifecycle. However, due to historic and present anthropogenic landscape changes, this species encounters a variety of agriculture fields during migratory and dispersal movements. These landscape changes have potential to affect habitat connectivity for these frogs and may interfere with the species’ life-cycle needs. Differing land-cover types have varying effects on movement, desiccation and predation of the northern leopard frog, which in turn affect the frog’s ability to survive. Through creation and use of an agent-based model that can simulate individual frog movement on …
Ammonia Oxidizing Archaea In Engineered Water And Wastewater Systems: Presence, Activity And Relationship To Heavy Metal Inhibition, And Disinfectants, Dhritikshama Roy
Ammonia Oxidizing Archaea In Engineered Water And Wastewater Systems: Presence, Activity And Relationship To Heavy Metal Inhibition, And Disinfectants, Dhritikshama Roy
Environmental and Conservation Sciences
Ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA) have been found as a key player in ammonia oxidation. Over the past decade, AOA have been shown in some cases to outnumber ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in marine, terrestrial and aquatic environments, and to participate in nitrification. In this dissertation research, AOA along with AOB were examined for their presence and activities in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), and water treatment plants (WTPs) employing different disinfectants and their distribution systems (DSs). Firstly, this research investigated the abundance and seasonal variation of AOA and AOB by quantitative polymerase chain reaction targeting the ammonia monooxygenase subunit A gene …
East Lynne’S Transatlantic Course: From British Serialization To American Theatre, Jordan Rae Olson
East Lynne’S Transatlantic Course: From British Serialization To American Theatre, Jordan Rae Olson
English
Ellen Wood’s East Lynne, a popular sensation fiction, began because of its original and insatiable British readership; however, the texts immediate and drastic reception into American theater confirms that this narrative is not simply an overly dramatic and unrealistic domestic drama. Although melodramatic, Wood’s text resonates with audiences because it is relatable in genuinely meaningful ways. The main protagonist, Lady Isabel, wrongfully leaves her family and spends the rest of her life in physical and emotional turmoil, however her endurance never ceases. Her character is psychologically compelling and easily accessible because she possesses truly human qualities and is a representation …
Natural Flavors: Rhetorical Stories Of Food Labels, Rebecca West
Natural Flavors: Rhetorical Stories Of Food Labels, Rebecca West
English
What is in our food? What can food labels tell us about what is in our food? This dissertation applies rhetoric in the everyday human act of reading food labels and making decisions about what to eat based on those labels. Rhetoric is continually operating from the beginning of the food manufacturing process, to designing and writing food labels and packaging, and finally to the consumer reading the label in the store. “Natural flavors” is an ingredient listing that appears more frequently on food labels, especially in the organic and natural foods industries. I collected food labels and used qualitative …
“Your Legacy Is Yours To Build”: Defining Leadership In Beowulf And Its Adaptations, Emilee Catherine Ruhland
“Your Legacy Is Yours To Build”: Defining Leadership In Beowulf And Its Adaptations, Emilee Catherine Ruhland
English
This paper analyzes how narrative choice and media affect the depiction of leadership in Beowulf by studying three texts: the medieval Beowulf, the 2007 Hollywood film of the same name, and Beowulf: The Game. While the medieval text celebrates qualities of leadership that blend Germanic heroism and the Augustinian ideal of kingship, the film rejects ideal kingship and instead focuses on the vices of greed and pride as inherent in all leaders, thus rejecting good leadership completely. However, the video game strikes a balance and manages to again celebrate good leadership, though it’s celebration of the Hero King and condemnation …

Because a patentable invention must be novel, and it must embody an advancement that would not have been obvious to persons of ordinary skill, the invention must be compared to the “prior art.” Prior art, in the language of the current Patent Act, includes anything that was already “patented, described in a printed publication, or in public use, on sale, or otherwise available to the public.” With certain qualifications, patent law has always required that prior art have been available to the public. A manuscript describing the claimed invention that had never left its author's desk drawer would not qualify …

Guitar Music In Collections: A New Web-Based Index Is Launched, Ellwood Colahan
Soundboard Scholar
Is there any really good way to locate specific pieces of guitar music within published collections and anthologies? Might there be already a best way? Anyone who has taught or studied classical guitar is familiar with collections like Das Gitarrespiel or the Noad anthologies. But it is hard to remember with accuracy which pieces are in which of these editions or in dozens of others like them. Library and trade catalogs are not of much help. What is needed for this problem is in-depth indexing rather than traditional cataloging. These print indexes of song anthologies and collections have more recently …
