Behavioural Monitoring Via Network Communications, Gaseb Alotibi Jan 2017

Behavioural Monitoring Via Network Communications, Gaseb Alotibi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

It is commonly acknowledged that using Internet applications is an integral part of an individual’s everyday life, with more than three billion users now using Internet services across the world; and this number is growing every year. Unfortunately, with this rise in Internet use comes an increasing rise in cyber-related crime. Whilst significant effort has been expended on protecting systems from outside attack, only more recently have researchers sought to develop countermeasures against insider attack. However, for an organisation, the detection of an attack is merely the start of a process that requires them to investigate and attribute the attack …

Evaluation Of Levels Of Antibiotic Resistance In Groundwater-Derived E. Coli Isolates In The Midwest Of Ireland And Elucidation Of Potential Predictors Of Resistance, Jean O'Dwyer, Paul Hynds, Matthieu Pot, Catherine Adley, Michael Ryan Jan 2017

Evaluation Of Levels Of Antibiotic Resistance In Groundwater-Derived E. Coli Isolates In The Midwest Of Ireland And Elucidation Of Potential Predictors Of Resistance, Jean O'Dwyer, Paul Hynds, Matthieu Pot, Catherine Adley, Michael Ryan

Articles

Antibiotic-resistant (pathogenic and non-pathogenic) organisms and genes are now acknowledged as significant emerging aquatic contaminants with potentially adverse human and ecological health impacts, and thus require monitoring. This study is the first to investigate levels of resistance among Irish groundwater (private wells) samples; Escherichia coli isolates were examined against a panel of commonly prescribed human and veterinary therapeutic antibiotics, followed by determination of the causative factors of resistance. Overall, 42 confirmed E. coli isolates were recovered from a groundwater-sampling cohort. Resistance to the human panel of antibiotics was moderate; nine (21.4%) E. coli isolates demonstrated resistance to one or more …

An Overview Of Dissolved Organic Carbon In Groundwater And Implications For Drinking Water Safety, S. Regan, Paul Hynds, R. Flynn Jan 2017

An Overview Of Dissolved Organic Carbon In Groundwater And Implications For Drinking Water Safety, S. Regan, Paul Hynds, R. Flynn

Articles

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is composed of a diverse array of compounds, predominantly humic substances, and is a near ubiquitous component of natural groundwater, notwithstanding climatic extremes such as arid and hyper-arid settings. Despite being a frequently measured parameter of groundwater quality, the complexity of DOC composition and reaction behaviour means that links between concentration and human health risk are difficult to quantify and few examples are reported in the literature. Measured concentrations from natural/unpolluted groundwater are typically below 4 mg C/l, whilst concentrations above these levels generally indicate anthropogenic influences and/or contamination issues and can potentially compromise water safety. …

The Internet As An Information Intermediary, Michael S. Drake, Jacob Thornock, Brady J. Twedt Jan 2017

The Internet As An Information Intermediary, Michael S. Drake, Jacob Thornock, Brady J. Twedt

Faculty Publications

The internet is an enormous and growing source of information for investors about the opinions of others. Virtually any individual with internet access can express opinions about firms and editorialize about company news. However, to date we know very little about the impact these nontraditional internet intermediaries have on markets. We develop a framework wherein internet information intermediaries fall along a spectrum of professionalism and document a nuanced relationship between coverage by these intermediaries and capital market effects. Using a novel dataset that tracks coverage of companies by individuals posting on thousands of websites, we find that coverage by professional …

Legal Frameworks For Media And Information Literacy, María-Del-Mar Grandío, Sirin Dilli, Brian O'Neill Jan 2017

Legal Frameworks For Media And Information Literacy, María-Del-Mar Grandío, Sirin Dilli, Brian O'Neill

Books/Book chapters

Across Europe and beyond, efforts are growing to promote the wider use of digital media by all citizens - adults and young people alike. As such, an increasingly prominent role is being given to the notion that media literacy is a precondition for full and effective participation in contemporary societies. In such a context, interests of policymakers focusing on promoting the benefits of a wider societal digital participation intersect with the traditional function of media literacy to promote enhanced skills and competencies of citizens to access, create and understand media content. Accordingly, a concern with media literacy has moved from …

This Is Where We Are - Collectively Living, Working And Being, With And Through Predictive Algorithms., B Aga, M Phillips

School of Art, Design and Architecture

‘This Is Where We Are’ (TIWWA) was an immersive and interactive algorithmic sculpture fuelled by the data we collectively generate. This collaborative work was created for the opening of the new Tate Modern Switch house in London in June 2016 by the i-DAT Research and Design Collective, Tate Collective London and Intercity. This technological fusion of interactive light and sound asked audiences to consider the data they generate and the algorithmic systems that increasingly mediate their reality and influence their behaviour. The creation of the sculptural artefacts and the digital systems driving them, were forged through interplay between data, algorithms …

The Impossible Quest - Problems With Diligent Search For Orphan Works, Simone Schroff, Marcella Favale, Aura Bertoni Jan 2017

The Impossible Quest - Problems With Diligent Search For Orphan Works, Simone Schroff, Marcella Favale, Aura Bertoni

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Digital technologies allow unprecedented preservation and sharing of world-wide cultural heritage. Public and private players are increasingly entering the scene with mass digitisation projects that will make this possible. In Europe, legislative action has been taken to allow cultural institutions to include in their online collections copyright works whose owner is either unknown or non-locatable (‘Orphan Works’). However, according to the Orphan Works Directive, cultural institutions need to attempt to locate the owner of a work before using it. This is the so-called ‘Diligent Search’ requirement. This paper provides an empirical analysis of the conditions under which a Diligent Search can …

What Does Global Higher Education Mean For University Leaders?, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2017

What Does Global Higher Education Mean For University Leaders?, Ellen Hazelkorn

Other resources

The world is changing, and fast. The “widening, deepening and speeding up of connections across national borders” is transforming the way we live and work (OECD, 2016). The growing demand to participate in higher education and to leverage its benefits for individuals and society is changing what, where, when and how we learn. The impacts of societal challenges, previously easily ignored, now flow easily and quickly between and across boundaries with positive and negative effects. Whether we recognise it or not, we are all global citizens, moving across countries and borders, and connected to each other through trade and technology.

Metagenomic Analysis Of The Complex Microbial Consortium Associated With Cultures Of The Oil‐Rich Alga Botryococcus Braunii, Christine Sambles, Karen Moore, Thomas M. Lux, Katy Jones, George R. Littlejohn, João D. Gouveia, Stephen J. Aves, David J. Studholme, Rob Lee, John Love

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

AbstractMicroalgae are widely viewed as a promising and sustainable source of renewable chemicals and biofuels. Botryococcus braunii synthesizes and secretes significant amounts of long‐chain (C30‐C40) hydrocarbons that can be subsequently converted into gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel. B. braunii cultures are not axenic and the effects of co‐cultured microorganisms on B. braunii growth and hydrocarbon yield are important, but sometimes contradictory. To understand the composition of the B. braunii microbial consortium, we used high throughput Illumina sequencing of metagenomic DNA to profile the microbiota within a well established, stable B. braunii culture and characterized the demographic changes in the microcosm …

Beyond Logic And Norms: A Figurational Critique Of Institutional Theory In Organisation Studies, Paddy Dolan, John Connolly Jan 2017

Beyond Logic And Norms: A Figurational Critique Of Institutional Theory In Organisation Studies, Paddy Dolan, John Connolly

Articles

This paper provides a figurational critique of one of the most dominant theoretical frames within organisation studies - institutional theory. Despite its status as the leading theoretical lens for explaining organisational change, institutional theorists continue to struggle with the so called agencystructure issue and remain divided in how to overcome it. Our primary criticisms concern the propensity to invoke or generate dualisms, the reliance on the sociological frames which sustain this, and the failure to engage in any comprehensive way with Elias’s writings on this subject.

Academic Capitalism In Architecture Schools: A Feminist Critique Of Employability, 24/7 Work And Entrepreneurship, I Troiani Jan 2017

Academic Capitalism In Architecture Schools: A Feminist Critique Of Employability, 24/7 Work And Entrepreneurship, I Troiani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This chapter examines the current situation that many universities worldwide are facing due to globalisation, which is of transitioning from institutions for education (Foucault’s ‘premodern or medieval university’) toentrepreneurial businesses (the ‘modern university’). The modern university is governed by a neoliberal system of production and consumption of students, staff, knowledge and research for the purpose of improving nation economies. Looking particularly at schools of architecture, it discusses employability, 24-hour work and entrepreneurship in relation to marketisation and economisation. It tracks the inequalities that arise from the neoliberalisation of public universities on teaching content, an administrative-directed work, workloads, wellbeing and gender. …

In 2015 1,457 measurements at the Port of Los Angeles and 694 measurements at the Cottonwood weigh station in northern California were collected. The Port fleet changed little since 2013, increasing the average age (+1.8 years), accompanied by an increase in particle mass (PM) by +266% (0.03 ± 0.01 to 0.11 ± 0.01 gPM/kg of fuel) and black carbon (BC) by +300% (0.02 ± 0.003 to 0.08 ± 0.01 gBC/kg of fuel). Particle number (PN) also increased (1.5 x 10 …

Discursive Constructions Of The Internet Of Toys, Lelia Green, Donell Holloway Jan 2017

Discursive Constructions Of The Internet Of Toys, Lelia Green, Donell Holloway

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The Internet of Toys (IoToys) refers to the small subset of the Internet of Things often marketed to children and their caregivers as smart toys. These toys include many of the affordances of screen-based, networked technologies, packaged as children’s everyday playthings. Thus, Hello Barbie uses voice recognition and cloud-based computing combined with artificial intelligence procedures to craft meaningful responses to children’s statements and engage them in quasi-naturalistic conversation. Other IoToys also include image recognition and geo-locational data collection. Such toys can also be constructed in different ways that represent the perspectives of the speaker and circumstances of use. Thus Germany’s …

A Discursive Institutionalist Approach To Understanding The Changes To The Irish Social Partnership Policy After 2008., John Hogan, Nicola A. Timoney Jan 2017

A Discursive Institutionalist Approach To Understanding The Changes To The Irish Social Partnership Policy After 2008., John Hogan, Nicola A. Timoney

Articles

Employing the critical juncture theory (CJT), a discursive institutionalist approach, this paper examines the nature of the changes to social partnership policy at the end of the decade of the 2000s. Did these changes constitute a transformation in social partnership policy, or were they a continuation of a previously established policy pathway? The CJT consists of three elements – economic crisis, ideational change, and the nature of the policy change – that must be identified for us to be able to declare with some certainty if the changes to social partnership policy constituted a critical juncture. In this context, ideational …

Aesopian Language Of Soviet Era Children’S Literature: Translation, Adaptation, And Animation Of A Western Classic, Boryana Borisova Jan 2017

Aesopian Language Of Soviet Era Children’S Literature: Translation, Adaptation, And Animation Of A Western Classic, Boryana Borisova

Honors Projects

Analyzing spoken, written, visual, or tangible material can offer sophisticated insight into the complexity of social life, understood through analysis of language in its widest sense; it offers ways of investigating meaning, whether in conversation or in culture. The idea of retelling foreign texts may be alien to some cultures, and understanding why, how, and when a particular work was created is essential for understanding the Russian one. In highly censored Russian culture, skepticism is a prerequisite for reading a text in the Soviet era, as it frequently served as an Aesopian hint or an allegory on contemporary issues. “Aesopian …

Procedural Historic Building Information Modelling (Hbim) For Recording And Documenting European Classical Architecture, Conor Dore Jan 2017

Procedural Historic Building Information Modelling (Hbim) For Recording And Documenting European Classical Architecture, Conor Dore

Doctoral

Procedural Historic Building Information Modelling (HBIM) is a new approach for modelling historic buildings which develops full building information models from remotely sensed data. HBIM consists of a novel library of reusable parametric objects, based on historic architectural data and a system for mapping these library objects to survey data. Using concepts from procedural modelling, a new set of rules and algorithms have been developed to automatically combine HBIM library objects and generate different building arrangements by altering parameters. This is a semi-automatic process where the required building structure and objects are first automatically generated and then refined to match …

Connected Health: An Open Innovation Perspective., Anushree Priyadarshini, Maria Quinlan, Gerardine Doyle Jan 2017

Connected Health: An Open Innovation Perspective., Anushree Priyadarshini, Maria Quinlan, Gerardine Doyle

Articles

The concept of connected health has gained traction in recent years as a new technology enabled and networked model of health care delivery. It is often used as an umbrella term for eHealth, digital health, health informatics, telemedicine, mHealth and involves the establishment and management of a network of stakeholders with the aim of improving health care quality and out- comes. Yet a lack of open interactions and knowledge networks and the missing integration of the larger constituency of interdisciplinary experts are limiting the execution of the model and restricting its potential to devise services and interventions around patient’s needs …

Market Dimensions Of Industrial Juice Production, Anushree Priyadarshini

Articles

The juice sector is currently demonstrating positive and dynamic growth mainly due to a change in lifestyle, the tendency of consumers to prefer healthy products, and an increase in purchasing power. Fruit juices form part of what are termed the “new age beverages.” In sync with growing consumer inclination toward healthier choices, manufacturers are moving over to healthier ingredients in their juices. Numerous new and innovative products are being launched globally by manufacturers to stimulate sales through innovations in flavor blends, calorie and sweetness levels, and functional benefits, very much shaped by the major lifestyle trends. This chapter aims to …

Reducing The Complexity Of Equalisation And Decoding Of Shingled Writing, Muhammad Bashir Abdulrazaq Jan 2017

Reducing The Complexity Of Equalisation And Decoding Of Shingled Writing, Muhammad Bashir Abdulrazaq

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology is important in the immediate need for expansion of magnetic hard disk beyond the limit of current disk technology. SMR provides a solution with the least change from current technology among contending technologies. Robust easy to implement Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques are needed to achieve the potentials of SMR. Current DSP techniques proposed border on the usage of Two Dimensional Magnetic Recording (TDMR) techniques in equalisation and detection, coupled with iterative error correction codes such as Low Density Parity Check (LDPC). Currently, Maximum Likelihood (ML) algorithms are normally used in TDMR detection. The shortcomings …

The Impact Of Robot Tutor Social Behaviour On Children, James R Kennedy Jan 2017

The Impact Of Robot Tutor Social Behaviour On Children, James R Kennedy

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Robotic technologies possess great potential to enter our daily lives because they have the ability to interact with our world. But our world is inherently social. Whilst humans often have a natural understanding of this complex environment, it is much more challenging for robots. The field of social Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) seeks to endow robots with the characteristics and behaviours that would allow for intuitive multimodal interaction. Education is a social process and previous research has found strong links between the social behaviour of teachers and student learning. This therefore presents a promising application opportunity for social human-robot interaction. The …

A Reference Computational Model To Manage The Semantics Of Learning Environments Using Swrl Enabled Owl Ontologies, Eiman Almami Jan 2017

A Reference Computational Model To Manage The Semantics Of Learning Environments Using Swrl Enabled Owl Ontologies, Eiman Almami

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis proposes a reference model and its computational core to support the creation of software applications within educational environments, which address Differences In Learning (DiffInL) and are applicable to both learners and instructors. This work differs from others in that the strength of this model resides on the re-usable character of the reasoning mechanism enabled by the computational environment. The starting point is the definition of agreed learning goals that the learner needs to achieve. In turn, the reference model generates personalised, best-practice teaching and learning materials, suitable for achieving the individual’s learning goals. This reference model consists of …
