Theses and Dissertations
This written thesis unpacks the thoughts and motivations behind the decisions I have made in my artistic practice that have ultimately culminated in my M.F.A. Thesis Exhibition: Sub for More. By merging images of my own work as well as internet sourced images of the culture that drives my work, I have created a platform to begin to understand my experience during graduate school. This text examines and explores my belief in the inherent power in pop culture, my obsession with fame, celebrity, and my self-identity as a participant in current pop-culture.

Development Of My Footprint Calculator, Karthik Mummidisetti
Theses and Dissertations
The Environmental footprint is a very powerful tool that helps an individual to understand how their everyday activities are impacting environmental surroundings. Data shows that global climate change, which is a growing concern for nations all over the world, is already affecting humankind, plants and animals through raising ocean levels, droughts & desertification and changing weather patterns. In addition to a wide range of policy measures implemented by national and state governments, it is necessary for individuals to understand the impact that their lifestyle may have on their personal environmental footprint, and thus over the global climate change. “My Footprint …
In Search Of A Function For An Uncharacterized Conserved Protein In Streptococcus Sanguinis Sk36, Ayana Scott-Elliston
In Search Of A Function For An Uncharacterized Conserved Protein In Streptococcus Sanguinis Sk36, Ayana Scott-Elliston
Theses and Dissertations
With the number of fully sequenced bacterial genomes increasing in the past 7 years, it has been discovered that a large percentage of the putative protein coding genes have no known function. This lack of knowledge leaves scientists with an incomplete understanding of bacteria. In this study, conserved hypothetical protein mutants from Streptococcus sanguinis SK36 were screened on solid media with various environmental conditions. From these screens, the candidate protein, SSA_2372, displayed a sensitivity to acidic conditions. Its homolog in Bacillus subtilis 168, BSU00030, also displayed a sensitivity to pH conditions at its acid tolerance extremes unlike its other homolog …

Immersive Theater & The Physical Narrative, Lauren Prisco
Immersive Theater & The Physical Narrative, Lauren Prisco
Theses and Dissertations
Immersive Theater is a form of experimental theater that places spectators at the heart of the created work, by removing them from the constraint of static seats and instead encouraging them to explore an installed environment as a way of understanding the narrative. This thesis explores how Interior Design directly enhances a performance by creating spaces that challenge a spectator’s physical understanding of a narrative.

Steam Generation By Solar And Natural Gas Generators For Thermal Enhanced Oil Recovery, Abha Dwivedy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With easy oil recovered all across the world, the oil fields are depleting and extraction of heavy oil is becoming more important. The exploration and drilling of new fields is expensive and time intensive. With most of the oil remaining is heavy and viscous; Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) methods are followed. Thermal EOR is the most widely used method in which steam injection is the most popular. Every year natural gas is burnt to produce steam and this amount is increasing as heavy oil reserves are developing all across the world. With increase in technological advancements and goal of reducing …
Salmon Pluralities: The Politics Of Commercial Fishing On The Hoopa Valley Reservation, Lori D. Biondini
Salmon Pluralities: The Politics Of Commercial Fishing On The Hoopa Valley Reservation, Lori D. Biondini
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
From 2008 to 2010 members of the Hoopa Valley Tribe harvested large quantities of salmon from the Trinity River within the boundaries of the Hoopa Valley Reservation, and sold them to an off-reservation buyer. Other tribal members questioned the legality of the sellers’ actions, as well as the appropriateness of their fishing methods, which were interfering with non-commercial fishing on the river. In response, the Hoopa Valley Tribe’s governing council created a commission charged with developing commercial fishing regulations with input from the tribal membership. In early 2011, the commission invited me to participate in planning and facilitating two public …

Contributing to recent research into settler colonialism, this paper takes an on the ground look at how this system manifests today. This research turns its lens on the white settler, unmasks settler myths of innocence and contributes to an understanding of how whiteness and white supremacism shape settler colonialism in what is now called the United Sates. This is a placed based study, focusing on the Klamath and Salmon Rivers. Consequences and complexities of the “back to the land” movement are looked at, and the question of “back-to-whose-land?” is asked? A convivial research approach, which is a back and forth …

Voices Erased From The Environmental Discourse: Understanding Campesin@S Realities And Identities Through Narratives And Forms Of Resistances, Natalie M. Cardoso
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
In a society where it seems ever more important for people to define their identity based on their personal story while seeking approval and validity, many campesin@s’[farmworkers] identities are not being treated as such. Campesin@s’ narratives and their identity are trivialized due to the environmental movement, the food movement, and society at large. Furthermore, the lack of inclusivity and representation of campesin@s continue to be reinforced in the environmental discourse. This research centers on personal narrative to understand what makes a campesin@’s identity, how personal narratives play a critical role in empowering campesin@s, and the knowledge campesin@s can …

Examining Veiled Muslim Women's Experiences In Educational Institutions In France And The United States And Decolonizing The Curriculum To Reflect Their Stories, Katherine Ruprecht
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This thesis examines through qualitative data how the dominant narrative shapes the experiences of women in France who wear hijab and in the United States who wear hijab or niqab at educational institutions. This research focuses on what roles do cultural symbolism, colonial ideology and political propaganda play in continuing the dominant narrative in this context in both France and the United States. This study further advocates based on its findings that educational institutions must promote more cross-cultural dialog and a larger representation of accurate depictions of Muslim women. This research states that this can be achieved through “decolonizing” the …

“I Exist To Resist”: Navigating The Gender Non-Conforming Identity At Humboldt State University, Lizbeth E. Olmedo
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
While transgender research is educating and reforming schools, politics and wider society, there is little work on a gender spectrum that disrupts the gender binary of (trans) men/women. This research is an attempt to fill in the gaps of people, significantly students who do not fit under the “transgender umbrella,” as this term has tended to clump an array of gender and sexual identities together. This qualitative research explores students who go beyond the gender binary and how they navigate non-binary, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming identities within Humboldt State University (HSU). With this present qualitative study, I examined the lived …
Psychological Consequences Of Genetic Testing, Jack Allen
Psychological Consequences Of Genetic Testing, Jack Allen
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Direct-to-consumer genetic testing describes genetic testing which is done using online or mail in services, without the direct supervision of a counselor or physician. Individuals can order information about their ancestry, trait information, and even disease risk information. Online testing services have previously been prevented from offering certain types of genetic self-knowledge to consumers due to government regulation, however, there is little information available about how genetic self-knowledge may affect consumers. The present study evaluated whether simply believing oneself to be genetically disadvantaged could cause an individual to perform poorly on a working memory task.

Tardigrade studies in Poland have been carried out for more than a century and to date, 102 species have been reported from this central European country. This constitutes nearly 9% of all known species within the phylum. Although previous studies have been thorough, a number of taxa now known to belong to species complexes have been treated in only a very general way. One such complex is the Macrobiotus hufelandi group, which has a worldwide distribution. To date, only three hufelandi group species have been recorded from Poland: M. hufelandi hufelandi C.A.S.
