Translanguaging: Definitions, Implications, And Further Needs In Burgeoning Inquiry, Luis E. Poza Jan 2017

Translanguaging: Definitions, Implications, And Further Needs In Burgeoning Inquiry, Luis E. Poza

Faculty Publications

The term translanguaging has appeared with growing frequency in research about the education of linguistic minority students. Amid increasing application of the term, concern emerges regarding the consistency of its definitions and characterizations, specifically with respect to the term’s social justice implications, which risk dilution. Early instances (García, 2007, 2009a) position the term as both a pedagogical strategy for supporting multilingual learners and a critique of existing conceptualizations of language and bilingualism that have historically marginalized particular speech communities. In this review of recent literature, I analyze 53 texts published between 1996 and 2014 for their definitions, exemplifications, and attributed …

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Given today's complex societal challenges, academia should work better with government, industry and others in offering innovative solutions that benefit our society, economy and environment. Researchers across disciplines must work together and with decision-makers to understand how science can have better on-The-ground impacts toward longer-Term, resilient societal outcomes. This includes, for example, by working with end-users in problem formation and throughout research projects to ensure decision-making needs are being met, and by linking physical science to additional fields like economics, risk communication or psychology. However, persistent barriers to collaborating across disciplines and with external decision-makers remain. Despite decades of studies …

There Isn't A Town, Village Or Hamlet In Which Children Are Not Being Sexually Exploited', Safeguarding Our Children: How Effective Are Uk Responses To Child Sexual Exploitation?Â, Danielle Coffey

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The purpose of this research project was to explore the effectiveness of UK responses to the crime of child sexual exploitation (CSE). In order to do this, I interviewed a number of professionals working on the frontline with varying degrees of experience from a range of perspectives. The data collected explored current responses to CSE, how effective these responses are, changes in how CSE manifests, multi-agency collaboration, as well as recommendations for improving responses. Recent high profile cases of CSE have moved exploitation to the peak of many agencies agendas; finally giving the thousands of children and young people the …

Don't Think, Just Drink!': An Ethnographic Study Into Why Young People Engage With Alcohol-Fuelled Leisure Markets Of The Night-Time Economy, Sam Barnes Jan 2017

Don't Think, Just Drink!': An Ethnographic Study Into Why Young People Engage With Alcohol-Fuelled Leisure Markets Of The Night-Time Economy, Sam Barnes

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

Consumption and consumerism are now accepted as being fundamental contexts for the construction of youth lifestyle in post-modern society. This research is a critical exploration of why young people consume alcohol in a manner that can go beyond 'pleasure', to the painful realms of jouissance. This research draws on various disciplines utilising a deviant leisure perspective in order to explore the broader harms that lie beneath the surface of commodified leisure, which have become culturally acceptable and normalised in today's society. Through the use of ethnographic research, utilising observations and unstructured interviews, this project critically explores the significance of alcohol-fuelled …

Consent, Knowledge And Precaution: A Critical Analysis Of The Criminalisation Of The Reckless Transmission Of Hiv And Other Serious Diseases, James Stone Jan 2017

Consent, Knowledge And Precaution: A Critical Analysis Of The Criminalisation Of The Reckless Transmission Of Hiv And Other Serious Diseases, James Stone

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This article examines the criminalisation of the reckless transmission of disease in England and Wales. The defence of consent to bodily harm and the principle of informed consent are crucial to the foundations of this discussion. This defence gives an HIV infected party freedom to behave recklessly and rely on the knowledge of the victim as a defence for their reckless behaviour. The criminal recklessness of an HIV infected party has also been argued to be negated by the careful use of precautionary measures during sexual activity. This means that an infected party can engage in sexual activity in the …

Keberadaan Ritel Modern Dan Dampaknya Terhadap Pasar Tradisional Di Dki Jakarta, Dianur Hikmawati, Chaikal Nuryakin

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

This study aimed to analyze the impact of modern retail coexistence with traditional retail on traditional retail’s performance. Our observation is the 153 markets PD Pasar Jaya spread across DKI Jakarta and the modern retails (minimarkets, supermarkets, hypermarkets) location based on the retail zoning policy of Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 2/2002. This study used number of traditional retailers as a proxy of performance variable. The regression results indicate a non linear relationship between the number of modern retails–especially supermarket–and traditional retails performance in which the coexistence of one supermarket is positive for traditional market performance and negative afterwards.

A Review Of Early Influences On Physical Activity And Sedentary Behaviors Of Preschool‐Age Children In High‐Income Countries, Ana Cristina Lindsay, Mary L. Greaney, Sherrie F. Wallington, Tatiana Mesa, Carlos F. Salas

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Purpose: Promoting physical activity (PA) is a key component of preventing and controlling childhood obesity. Despite well‐documented benefits of PA, globally, rates of PA among young children have declined over the past decades, and most children are not accruing sufficient PA daily. Helping children develop the foundation for PA habits early in life is critical for the promotion of health in childhood and prevention of chronic diseases later in life, and will ultimately promote longer and healthier lives for individuals and the general population. The purpose of this review is to provide a synthesis of current evidence on influences …

All Faculty Scholarship

The use of the Internet and other digital media to disseminate scholarship has great potential for expanding the range of voices in legal scholarship. Legal blogging, in particular, with its shorter, more informal form, seems ideal for encouraging commentary from a diverse group of scholars. This Chapter tests this idea by exploring the role of blogging in legal scholarship and the level of participation of women and scholars of color on the most visible academic legal blogs. After noting the predominance of white male scholars as regular contributors on these blogs, we analyze the relative lack of diversity in this …

The Things You Do: Implicit Person Models Guide Online Action Observation., Kimberley Caroline Schenke Jan 2017

The Things You Do: Implicit Person Models Guide Online Action Observation., Kimberley Caroline Schenke

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Social perception is dynamic and ambiguous. Whilst previous research favoured bottom-up views where observed actions are matched to higher level (or motor) representations, recent accounts suggest top-down processes where prior knowledge guides perception of others’ actions, in a predictive manner. This thesis investigated how person-specific models of others’ typical behaviour in different situations are reactivated when they are re-encountered and predict their actions, using strictly controlled computer-based action identification tasks, event-related potentials (ERPs), as well as recording participants’ actions via motion tracking (using the Microsoft Kinect Sensor). The findings provided evidence that knowledge about seen actor’s typical behaviour is used …

Pluggable Optical Connector Interfaces For Electro-Optical Circuit Boards, Richard Charles Alexander Pitwon Jan 2017

Pluggable Optical Connector Interfaces For Electro-Optical Circuit Boards, Richard Charles Alexander Pitwon

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

A study is hereby presented on system embedded photonic interconnect technologies, which would address the communications bottleneck in modern exascale data centre systems driven by exponentially rising consumption of digital information and the associated complexity of intra-data centre network management along with dwindling data storage capacities. It is proposed that this bottleneck be addressed by adopting within the system electro-optical printed circuit boards (OPCBs), on which conventional electrical layers provide power distribution and static or low speed signaling, but high speed signals are conveyed by optical channels on separate embedded optical layers. One crucial prerequisite towards adopting OPCBs in modern …

Developing An Integrated Strategy For The Assessment Of Hazardous Substances In Kuwait’S Marine Environment, Hanan Ahmad Alsarawi Jan 2017

Developing An Integrated Strategy For The Assessment Of Hazardous Substances In Kuwait’S Marine Environment, Hanan Ahmad Alsarawi

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Kuwait is undergoing rapid economic growth involving substantial developments along its coastal shores and the marine environment. Many of the activities in the region are associated with oil industry, which can pollute the shores leading to contamination from oil residues, tar balls and trace metals. About 2 million barrels of oil are spilled annually from routine discharges into the Gulf, which derives mainly from dirty ballast waters and tank washing. The comprehensive literature review of hazardous substances in Kuwait’s marine environment has concluded that for the majority of these pollutants, contamination is localized around industrialised areas, and elsewhere is generally …

Notions Of A Radical Moving Image Archive As A Problematic, Amanda Egbe Jan 2017

Notions Of A Radical Moving Image Archive As A Problematic, Amanda Egbe

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The concerns of this thesis stem from the reflections of a filmmaker and the recognition of artists’ use of archival materials in moving image practice as an intervention in making visible aspects of experience that are implicit and often left out of linear accounts of a history of technologies. The implications of the thesis are that in the strategic mobilisation of moving image artefacts in the archive in their inter-relationship of making and viewing, concerns over what is not present, what is missing, what is unarchivable, what is fragmentary, and the copy are alleviated. The thesis conceives of the Mnemosyne …

Imagining The Scottish Economy: Economic (In)Security And The 'Hidden Politics' Of Independence, James Gilgrist Jan 2017

Imagining The Scottish Economy: Economic (In)Security And The 'Hidden Politics' Of Independence, James Gilgrist

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

On September 18th 2014, voters in a Scottish independence referendum were asked the yes/no question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?" Scotland voted ‘no’ to independence from the United Kingdom by a margin of 55% to 45%. The majority of the debate focused on what was termed ‘the economics of independence’. Whilst economic implications ought always to have been an important consideration, the key arguments for and against independence were built almost exclusively on how independence could influence the economic prospects of Scottish people. Essentially, through the articulation of the economic insecurities of either union or independence, unionists and nationalists …

Who Am I? Subjectivities In The Society Of Accountability, Amos Bianchi Jan 2017

Who Am I? Subjectivities In The Society Of Accountability, Amos Bianchi

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The doctoral thesis Who Am I? Subjectivities in the Society of Accountability aims to demonstrate that accountability is one of the most powerful processes of subjectivation in our contemporary era. The background is constituted by ordinary daily practices, born from the propagation of digital media in the last twenty years. Accountability is defined as the peculiar anthropotechnic that derives from the extension of the subject in the form of the account. Account is defined as every extension of the subject in the digital world, so that these extensions are univocally attributable to a singular physical body of a singular human …

An Evaluation Of The Impact Of Event Attendance On Perceptions Of The Host Organisation’S Reputation: A University Case Study, Katie Angliss Jan 2017

An Evaluation Of The Impact Of Event Attendance On Perceptions Of The Host Organisation’S Reputation: A University Case Study, Katie Angliss

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Reputation is an important asset for organisations worldwide. Many researchers have attempted to develop a measurement construct to assess an organisation’s reputation, with the RepTrak System being recognised to be the world’s first tool that assess reputation across multiple stakeholders and areas of the organisation. Nevertheless, the characteristics, methods and stakeholders to include within an assessment of this intangible asset continues to be widely debated. Organisations are under intense scrutiny by their stakeholders, with reputation being an organisational asset on which many opinions are formed. Universities in the UK are no different, as they compete for students from around the …

Picking Up (On) Fragments: Towards A Laboratorial Media Archaeology Through Reenactment, Phil Ellis Jan 2017

Picking Up (On) Fragments: Towards A Laboratorial Media Archaeology Through Reenactment, Phil Ellis

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis recognises the incompleteness of early television history, specifically as it is articulated in media archeological explorations. Through the process of reenactment, a series of tropes, conceits and insights are suggested which oblige us to reappraise the ontology of television. These insights are not by imitation but by a multiplicity of readings in the viewing of a historical act in the present day through a laboratorial media archaeological arts practice. The thesis interrogates a perceived gap in media archaeology’s body of knowledge through creative, playful and experimental practice borne of archival and historical research, developed from the proposition that …

Transitions-Felt: William James, Locative Narrative And The Multi-Stable Field Of Expanded Narrative, Emma Whittaker Jan 2017

Transitions-Felt: William James, Locative Narrative And The Multi-Stable Field Of Expanded Narrative, Emma Whittaker

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is about expanded narrative, a new field of experimental narrative practices that are not represented by single subjects or by categories such as ‘interactive’. It is defined by works that present a challenge to the form, fiction or nonfiction, in terms of the content, structure, style of writing or audience engagement. Extending the cognitive term ‘perceptual multistability’, that refers to switching between interpretations experienced when we look at an ambiguous figures, such as, the Necker cube, this thesis develops the position that expanded narrative practices and specifically locative narrative, a genera of expanded narrative, hold the potential to …

How Does The Analysis Of Structural Violence Help To Explain The Persistence Of The Israel-Palestine Conflict? A Case Study Of The Barrier, Aneta Brockhill Jan 2017

How Does The Analysis Of Structural Violence Help To Explain The Persistence Of The Israel-Palestine Conflict? A Case Study Of The Barrier, Aneta Brockhill

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The Israel-Palestine conflict constitutes one of the longest standing conflicts in modern times. Its continuation has often been attributed to the very nature of the conflict: two peoples pursuing an incompatible goal-ownership of the same piece of land. Violence has constituted a characteristic feature of this struggle, widely employed by the two peoples. The analysis of violence, however, has often been limited to acts of direct and physical violence that can be attributed to an individual subject. This thesis investigates violence in the conflict going beyond this traditional conceptualisation of violence. It employs Johan Galtung’s conceptual and theoretical framework, in …

Internet Of Props. A Performative Ontology And Design Framework For The Internet Of Things., Gianni Corino Jan 2017

Internet Of Props. A Performative Ontology And Design Framework For The Internet Of Things., Gianni Corino

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Set in the relatively new and fast developing field of investigation known as Internet of Things (IoT), this research starts by looking at the lack of critical and conceptual reflection on the area. With a main research question that challenges the underlying concepts of the IoT, the study develops a performative design framework to critique the field of investigation. The main corpus consists of: 1. speculative inquiry into the ontological dualisms of ‘objects’ and ‘things’ and the emerging social dimension of humans and non-humans; 2. the identification of an ontological-performative model based on the idea of Props; 3. the entanglement …

In Search Of The Domonovus: Speculative Designs For The Computationally-Enhanced Domestic Environment, Stavros Didakis Jan 2017

In Search Of The Domonovus: Speculative Designs For The Computationally-Enhanced Domestic Environment, Stavros Didakis

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The home is a physical place that provides isolation, comfort, access to essential needs on a daily basis, and it has a strong impact on a person’s life. Computational and media technologies (digital and electronic objects, devices, protocols, virtual spaces, telematics, interaction, social media, and cyberspace) become an important and vital part of the home ecology, although they have the ability to transform the domestic experience and the understanding of what a personal space is. For this reason, this work investigates the domestication of computational media technology; how objects, systems, and devices become part of the personal and intimate space …

The Times And The Manchester Guardian’S Editorial Perspectives On Irish Home Rule And The Adoption Of Referendum Debates During The British Constitutional Crisis: December 1910-August 1911, David Frederick Ernest Moore Jan 2017

The Times And The Manchester Guardian’S Editorial Perspectives On Irish Home Rule And The Adoption Of Referendum Debates During The British Constitutional Crisis: December 1910-August 1911, David Frederick Ernest Moore

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis is a critical examination of the editorial coverage of referendum and Irish Home Rule issues as reported by both The Times and the Manchester Guardian during the closing stages of the British constitutional crisis of 1911. The traditional and conventional constraints on the House of Lords were replaced with constraints based on the law namely the Parliament Act 1911. The Act gave financial control of the state to the House of Commons, and rendered the role of the House of Lords chamber primarily one of revision and delay. A coalition led by the Liberal Government. including the Irish …

Healthy Performance - A Case Study On Performance Management, Jeremy Walding Jan 2017

Healthy Performance - A Case Study On Performance Management, Jeremy Walding

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The following thesis has set out to identify the current gaps in knowledge, literature and research surrounding performance management within the English National Health Service (NHS). A literature review and qualitative case study were conducted on the factors associated with organisational and strategic performance management within the English NHS. The study sets out to close the gaps in knowledge surrounding performance management to identify an alternative approach towards delivery. Current literature indicates that performance management frameworks within the NHS that may have been influenced by the impact of New Public Management movement approaches are very much based on a ‘command …

Catch | Bounce: Towards A Relational Ontology Of The Digital In Art Practice, James Charlton Jan 2017

Catch | Bounce: Towards A Relational Ontology Of The Digital In Art Practice, James Charlton

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

How might ‘the digital’ be conceived of in an ‘expanded field’ of art practice, where ontology is flattened such that it is not defined by a particular media? This text, together with an installation of art work at the Exhibition Research Lab, Liverpool John Moores University (13-24 March), constitutes the thesis submission as a whole, such that in the practice of ‘reading’ the thesis, each element remains differentiated from the other and makes no attempt to ‘represent’ the other. In negating representation, such practices present a ‘radical’ rethinking of the digital as a differentiated in-itself, one that is not defined …

Laughter, Inframince And Cybernetics - Exploring The Curatorial As Creative Act, Edith M. Doove Jan 2017

Laughter, Inframince And Cybernetics - Exploring The Curatorial As Creative Act, Edith M. Doove

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis identifies and responds to a contemporary impasse in the curatorial, which is thought of as the realm that encompasses curating as a complex action and interaction; a verb that includes the conceiving, organising and executing of exhibitions as well as critical thinking around curation as a discipline. The current impasse in curation the thesis responds to is caused, on the one hand, through its rapid expansion since the late 1980s and, on the other, through its mainstream and populist appropriation, which confuses understandings of it. The thesis proposes a strategy for the recovery for curating’s most basic work …
