From Tolerance And Diversity To Inclusion And Celebration; New Horizons For Infusing Queer Theory Into Communities, Laura Jean Mcguire

Journal of Family Strengths

Tolerance and diversity are at times lauded as the essential terms for modern social justice movements. From school to community settings teachers, public figures, and political leaders throw these terms around to great applaud and acclaim. And yet who are we trying to serve by using these terms, and whose humanity is preserved through tolerance and diversity? In the following article I address the difference between the simplicity and shortcomings posed by tolerating and diversifying spaces to the more radical movements of inclusion and celebration. I unpack these frameworks through personal narratives concerning my field work and experiences as well …

Authentic Youth And Young Adult Partnerships: Broadening The Narrative Of Lgbtq Youth Homelessness, Jama Shelton, Christa Price, Phoebe Vancleefe

Journal of Family Strengths

Lived experience generates knowledge not available through formal education and training. If lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and young adults (YYA) experiencing homelessness are to be effectively engaged, their needs met, and their successful transition out of homelessness facilitated, they must be partners in the creation of solutions meant to help them. That means that everyone working to address LGBTQ YYA homelessness – including policymakers, government officials, advocates, researchers, and service providers – need to understand how to partner authentically with YYA experiencing homelessness. This article will introduce a framework for authentic YYA partnerships, describe the philosophy …

Depression: The Often Overlooked Sequela Of Head Trauma, Samuel D. Hodge Jr., Jack E. Hubbard Dec 2017

Depression: The Often Overlooked Sequela Of Head Trauma, Samuel D. Hodge Jr., Jack E. Hubbard

Cleveland State Law Review

Depression is a common sequela of head trauma. Approximately half of all individuals with a cranial injury will experience depression within the first year, regardless of the severity of the injury. The ailment is characterized clinically as a mood disorder, often associated with intense feelings of sadness. However, depression is more complex than mood disorders, as many mental and bodily complaints—such as insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, appetite changes, aches and pains, and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities—are associated with depression. These intense feelings, particularly when combined with despair and hopelessness, can lead to suicide, a dreaded potential complication of …

Stuck In Ohio's Legal Limbo, How Many Mistrials Are Too Many Mistrials?: Exploring New Factors That Help A Trial Judge In Ohio Know Whether To Exercise Her Authority To Dismiss An Indictment With Prejudice, Especially Following Repeated Hung Juries, Samantha M. Cira Dec 2017

Cira

Cleveland State Law Review

Multiple mistrials following validly-prosecuted trials are becoming an increasingly harsh reality in today’s criminal justice system. Currently, the Ohio Supreme Court has not provided any guidelines to help its trial judges know when to make the crucial decision to dismiss an indictment with prejudice following a string of properly-declared mistrials, especially due to repeated hung juries. Despite multiple mistrials that continue to result in no conviction, criminal defendants often languish behind bars, suffering detrimental psychological harm and a loss of personal freedom as they remain in “legal limbo” waiting to retry their case. Furthermore, continuously retrying defendants cuts against fundamental …

Looping Predictive Method To Improve Accuracy Of A Machine Learning Model, Subramanyam Reddy Pogili Dec 2017

Looping Predictive Method To Improve Accuracy Of A Machine Learning Model, Subramanyam Reddy Pogili

Theses

The topic of this project is an analysis of drug-related tweets. The goal is to build a Machine Learning Model that can distinguish between tweets that indicate drug abuse and other tweets that also contain the name of a drug but do not describe abuse. Drugs can be illegal, such as heroin, or legal drugs with a potential of abuse, such as painkillers. However, building a good Machine Learning Model requires a large amount of training data. For each training tweet, a human expert has determined whether it indicates drug abuse or not. This is difficult work for humans. …

A Study Of Kentucky School District Websites: They’Re Colorful And Informative….But Are They Ada Compliant?, John A. Huss, Shannon Eastep

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

An often-overlooked component of a school district website is the necessity for that website to be accessible to those with disabilities, while following the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 of the Workforce Rehabilitation Act. This study investigated the accessibility of school district websites in Kentucky by selecting a random sample of 50 school districts and analyzing their home pages using WAVE (Web Accessibility Versatile Evaluator), which reports accessibility violations by annotating a copy of the page that was evaluated and presenting embedded icons and indicators to disclose breaches with ADA. Out of 50 districts, …

Removal Of Organic Material In Free Water Surface Gravel Bed Filters, Aloyce Mayo Dec 2017

Removal Of Organic Material In Free Water Surface Gravel Bed Filters, Aloyce Mayo

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

The removal of organic material in free surface gravel bed filters was investigated and modelled. Two pilot wetland units of 7.5m x 1.5m x 0.7m were constructed adjacent to the University of Dar es Salaam waste stabilization ponds to receive maximum organic and hydraulic loading rates of less than 185 kg/ha/d and 110 l/m2/d, respectively. These units received wastewater of domestic characteristics from primary stabilization pond. The entire depth of 0.7 m of the wetland units were packed with gravel of size 8 ~ 25 mm and porosity of 35%. Samples were collected from the influent and effluent of wetland …

Moisture Induced Deformations In Glulam Members - Experiments And 3-D Finite Element Model, Henry Meleki Kiwelu Dec 2017

Moisture Induced Deformations In Glulam Members - Experiments And 3-D Finite Element Model, Henry Meleki Kiwelu

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Experiments were performed on scaled glue laminated bending specimens to observe time dependent development of deformations during drying and wetting. Measurements determined changes in the average moisture content and external shape and dimensions between when specimens were placed into constant or variable climates. Alterations in the external shape and dimensions reflected changes in the average value and distribution of moisture and mechanosorptive creep in the glulam. The results are being used to develop a sequentially-coupled three-dimensional hygrothermal Finite Element (FE) model for predicting temporally varying internal strains and external deformations of drying or wetting solid wood structural components. The model …

Inquiry-Based Learning: Emirati University Students Choose Whatsapp For Collaboration, Robyn Albers, Christina Davison, Bradley Johnson

All Works

Considerable research has shown the value of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) regarding student engagement and motivation, depth of learning, and cognitive flexibility. Student collaboration is one component of this approach, since students must communicate and work together inside and outside of class time when engaging with an IBL project. Choosing a mobile learning tool can benefit student collaboration in so far as the tool enables anytime/anywhere collaborative learning. This study looked at how 118 Emirati undergraduate students in a government-sponsored university in the United Arab Emirates chose to collaborate in an IBL semester-long assignment. Unlike some approaches that dictate the technology …
