Late Holocene Evolution Of A Coupled, Mud-Dominated Delta Plain-Chenier Plain System, Coastal Louisiana, Usa, Marc P. Hijma, Zhixiong Shen, Torbjörn E. Törnqvist, Barbara Mauz

Marine Science

Major deltas and their adjacent coastal plains are commonly linked by means of coast-parallel fluxes of water, sediment, and nutrients. Observations of the evolution of these interlinked systems over centennial to millennial timescales are essential to understand the interaction between point sources of sediment discharge (i.e. deltaic distributaries) and adjacent coastal plains across large spatial (i.e. hundreds of kilometres) scales. This information is needed to constrain future generations of numerical models to predict coastal evolution in relation to climate change and other human activities. Here we examine the coastal plain (Chenier Plain, CP) adjacent to the Mississippi River delta, one …

Investigation Of Iron Oxide Nanocolloidal Suspension Diffusion Using A Direct Imaging Method, Ashley E. Rice, Ana Oprisan Nov 2017

Investigation Of Iron Oxide Nanocolloidal Suspension Diffusion Using A Direct Imaging Method, Ashley E. Rice, Ana Oprisan

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

We performed a set of experiments using a direct imaging method to investigate the diffusion process of iron oxide, Fe2O3, nanoparticles. We studied concentration fluctuations that move against the concentration gradient and induce disturbances in the interface between the iron oxide suspension and water in the sample cell. Using this imaging method in combination with the differential dynamic algorithm for image processing, we are able to extract information about the power, size, and lifetime of the fluctuations. We performed this experiment both in the presence and in the absence of a 4.2 mT magnetic field. We …

Investigating The Toxicity And Accumulation Of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D) And Glyphosate In Eisenia Fetida, Caitlin Lazurick, Nicole Lidzbarski, Rachel Owings, Jeff Brotherton, Edna Steele Nov 2017

Investigating The Toxicity And Accumulation Of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D) And Glyphosate In Eisenia Fetida, Caitlin Lazurick, Nicole Lidzbarski, Rachel Owings, Jeff Brotherton, Edna Steele

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup®, is the most widely used herbicide in the world. It is also used in combination with another effective herbicide, 2,4-D, in the formulation called Enlist Duo®. The EPA approved the use of Enlist Duo® on certain crops including those genetically modified to be resistant to both herbicides. The predicted significant increase in the use of these herbicides raised concerns from the general public because both compounds have been classified as possibly or probably carcinogenic. Since herbicides are applied directly to vegetation, the safety of organisms that come in contact …

The Effects Of Sports Related Head Impact On Balance And Neurocognitive Functions, Shaquanda D. Ross-Simmons, Michelle L. Vieyra, Abhishek Jain, Keri Weed Nov 2017

The Effects Of Sports Related Head Impact On Balance And Neurocognitive Functions, Shaquanda D. Ross-Simmons, Michelle L. Vieyra, Abhishek Jain, Keri Weed

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of sports-related head injury on balance, attention, and memory. Reliable differences have been found using measures that directly tap into brain functioning, such as the auditory oddball task combined with EEG recording. We hypothesized that athletes reporting a diagnosed concussion or participation in high-risk sports would have compromised balance and neurocognitive functioning compared to athletes in low risk sports. Forty-five undergraduate participants were identified as either concussed, non-concussed in high-risk sports, or non-concussed in low-risk sports using a survey of athletic history, head trauma and demographics. The Biopac MP36 system, …

Differences In Pragmatic Language Measures In Mothers Of Children With Autism Or Fragile X Syndrome, Michelle Huang Nov 2017

Differences In Pragmatic Language Measures In Mothers Of Children With Autism Or Fragile X Syndrome, Michelle Huang

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Mastery of pragmatics, which refers to the language used in different social interactions, is key to effective communication in daily life. However, studies have found that mothers of children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) are at an increased risk for impaired pragmatic language skills. Though many measures of pragmatic language exist for children, very few are available for these mothers. Two commonly used measures for the mothers include the Pragmatic Rating Scale (PRS) and the Pragmatic Language Subscale of the Broad Autism Phenotype Questionnaire (BAPQ). This study, unlike previous ones that only look at …

A Non-Minimum Phase Robust Non-Linear Neurowavelet Predictive Control Strategy For A Quadruple Tank Process, K Owa, Ai Khan, S Sharma, R Sutton Nov 2017

A Non-Minimum Phase Robust Non-Linear Neurowavelet Predictive Control Strategy For A Quadruple Tank Process, K Owa, Ai Khan, S Sharma, R Sutton

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In process industries model-plant mismatch is a significant problem. Quadruple tank process (QTP) can be configured both in minimum phase and non-minimum phase (NMP). However, in NMP, the control of QTP poses a challenge. This paper addresses that and presents a novel robust wavelet based non-minimum phase control (NMPC) strategy for the challenging QTP using genetic algorithm to find the optimised value of the manipulated variables in NMPC at every sampling time. The QTP is modelled based on wavelet neural network. The simulation results indicate that significant improvements have been achieved both in modelling and control strategies for a QTP …

The Classification Of Infinite Abelian Groups With Partial Decomposition Bases In L∞Ω, Carol Jacoby, Peter Loth Nov 2017

The Classification Of Infinite Abelian Groups With Partial Decomposition Bases In L∞Ω, Carol Jacoby, Peter Loth

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We consider the class of abelian groups with partial decomposition bases, which includes groups classified by Ulm, Warfield, Stanton and others. We define an invariant and classify these groups in the language L∞ω, or equivalently, up to partial isomorphism. This generalizes a result of Barwise and Eklof and builds on Jacoby's classification of local groups with partial decomposition bases in L∞ω.

Packaging Of Genetic Material By Gene Transfer Agents (Gtas) Produced By Marine Roseobacter Species And Their Effect On Stimulating Bacterial Growth, Shahd Bader Aljandal Nov 2017

Packaging Of Genetic Material By Gene Transfer Agents (Gtas) Produced By Marine Roseobacter Species And Their Effect On Stimulating Bacterial Growth, Shahd Bader Aljandal

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Horizontal gene transfer is one of the most important mechanisms for prokaryotic genome innovation and evolution. Gene Transfer Agents (GTAs) are phage-like particles that package small fragments of the genome of a GTA-producing bacterial cell. GTA chromosomal gene clusters usually contain 15-conserved open reading frames (ORFs) and are present in most of the sequenced marine alpha-proteobacteria genomes. Some marine strains have been shown to produce GTA particles that were biologically active in marine environment.

GTA particles range in size, morphology and the amount of host DNA they package. To date, the characteristics of GTAs are largely based on observations of …

The Role Of High-Elevation Headwater Runoff In Streamflow Generation And Water Supply In The Northern Andes, Colombia, Laura Lotero Lozano Nov 2017

The Role Of High-Elevation Headwater Runoff In Streamflow Generation And Water Supply In The Northern Andes, Colombia, Laura Lotero Lozano

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Water security requires that sufficient quantities of water be available at critical times. This is particularly challenging for high-intensity urban and agricultural settings. In underdeveloped nations, streamflow is commonly the preferred water source, as it is readily available and delivered cost-free to users. Yet, the sources of these critical streamflows are often unknown. This issue is salient in the Northern Andes, where basic knowledge of controlling factors for the quantity, quality, and timing of runoff is lacking. High-elevation headwaters are the primary catchment areas in the Northern Andes, but the extent of water providing to municipalities in the Northern Andes …

Mechanistic Probes Of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework For Photocatalytic Application, Brian Pattengale, Sizhuo Yang, Sungsik Lee, Jier Huang Nov 2017

Mechanistic Probes Of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework For Photocatalytic Application, Brian Pattengale, Sizhuo Yang, Sungsik Lee, Jier Huang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

In this work, we report a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) with remarkable activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER): 40 500 μmol H2/g of metal organic framework (MOF). This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest activity achieved by any MOF system. This result necessitated assessment of the atomic-scale mechanistic function of ZIF-67 in HER, using advanced spectroscopy techniques, including time-resolved optical (OTA) and in situ X-ray-absorption (XAS) spectroscopy. Through the correlation of the OTA results with the catalytic performance, we demonstrated that the electron transfer (ET) pathway, rather than the energy transfer (ENT) pathway, between …

Progress Toward Phidianidine Analogues Containing A 1,2,3-Triazole Ring, David Laws Iii, Dillon King, Bryan H. Wakefield Nov 2017

Progress Toward Phidianidine Analogues Containing A 1,2,3-Triazole Ring, David Laws Iii, Dillon King, Bryan H. Wakefield

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Phidianidines are a class of compound that has been extracted from the sea mollusk Phidianis militaris. These compounds have been shown to exhibit a variety of useful properties such as antihistamine effects, anti-cancer activity, agonism of the µ-opioid receptor and neuroprotection. The biological activities are thought to be caused by the 1,2,4- oxadiazole ring found within the molecule. The goal of this project is to synthesize analogues of phidianidine that contain a 1,2,3-triazole instead of the 1,2,4 oxadiazole ring using a method that will allow for other regions of the molecule to be changed. This will help to elucidate …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Corannulene-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks, Marygrace H. Rainsford Nov 2017

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Corannulene-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks, Marygrace H. Rainsford

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Due to the great demands within the energy community, the need to develop materials that can significantly alter the vitality of different substances is one of the top priorities of researchers. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been synthesized to potentially be used as these advances. The objective of this project is to specifically alter the synthetic route of corannulene-based MOFs to create a new anode for a Li-ion battery used in hybrid cars. Due to the crystalline materials porosity and high surface area, the rate performance of this battery can effectively be improved. To do this, a three …

The detection of GW170817 (Abbott et al. 2017a) in both gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves heralds the age of gravitational-wave multi-messenger astronomy. On 17 August 2017 the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) (LIGO Scientific Collaboration et al. 2015) and Virgo (Acernese et al. 2015) detectors observed GW170817, a strong signal from the merger of a binary neutron-star system. Less than 2 seconds after the merger, a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) was detected within a region of the sky consistent with the LIGO-Virgo-derived location of the gravitational-wave source (Abbott et al. 2017b; Goldstein et al. 2017; Savchenko et al. 2017). …

Reef Fish Biodiversity In The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Megan E. Hepner Nov 2017

Reef Fish Biodiversity In The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Megan E. Hepner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The biological diversity of reef-fish in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) from 1999 – 2016 was evaluated in terms of abundance, biomass, species richness, evenness, Shannon diversity, Simpson diversity, and functional diversity, using observations collected by multiple agencies and institutions under the Reef Visual Census (RVC) program. To compare the different diversity indices species richness, Shannon diversity, Simpson diversity, and functional diversity were converted into effective number of species. I examined the seven indices by no-take marine zones, in seven benthic habitat strata, and across the three-distinct geographic subregions in the Florida Keys domain (Upper, Middle, and Lower …

A Geochemical And Petrological Analysis Of The San Rafael Volcanic Field, Utah, Danielle Koebli Nov 2017

A Geochemical And Petrological Analysis Of The San Rafael Volcanic Field, Utah, Danielle Koebli

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The San Rafael Volcanic Field, Utah, is a 4.6 Ma extinct monogenetic field that is found in the Northern Transition Zone of the Colorado Plateau. The field has been eroded, leaving the dikes, conduits, and sills visible. Within the sills we see evidences of immiscibility in the form of an intermediate syenite (~50 wt% SiO2) enclosed in a mafic shonkinite (~48 wt % SiO2). Field relations indicate that sills were formed due to single events (Richardson et al., 2015), which makes in-situ differentiation the process at the origin of both rock types. Geochemical data supports differentiation …

Ensemble-Based Modeling And Rigidity Decomposition Of Allosteric Interaction Networks And Communication Pathways In Cyclin-Dependent Kinases: Differentiating Kinase Clients Of The Hsp90-Cdc37 Chaperone, Gabrielle Stetz, Amanda Tse, Gennady M. Verkhivker Nov 2017

Verkhivker

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The overarching goal of delineating molecular principles underlying differentiation of protein kinase clients and chaperone-based modulation of kinase activity is fundamental to understanding activity of many oncogenic kinases that require chaperoning of Hsp70 and Hsp90 systems to attain a functionally competent active form. Despite structural similarities and common activation mechanisms shared by cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) proteins, members of this family can exhibit vastly different chaperone preferences. The molecular determinants underlying chaperone dependencies of protein kinases are not fully understood as structurally similar kinases may often elicit distinct regulatory responses to the chaperone. The regulatory divergences observed for members of CDK …

Problem-Based Learning Pedagogies In Teacher Education: The Case Of Botswana, Thenjiwe Major, Thalia M. Mulvihill Dr. Nov 2017

Problem-Based Learning Pedagogies In Teacher Education: The Case Of Botswana, Thenjiwe Major, Thalia M. Mulvihill Dr.

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

The development of primary school teachers is an important aspect of a country’s economic, social, and political well-being. The use of particular pedagogies in teacher education may greatly influence how teachers perform in their classrooms after completing their training programs. This micro-ethnography investigated the extent to which teacher educators in Botswana’s College of Education used problem-based learning (PBL) approaches in the development of preservice primary teachers. While the findings of this micro-ethnography showed that particular teacher educators rarely used problem-based learning approaches, the accompanying insights helped to bring a deeper understanding of what is needed for Botswana’s teacher education program …

Relativity From Mathematics Or Why Newton Could Have Beaten Einstein To The Punch, Diego Castano Nov 2017

Relativity From Mathematics Or Why Newton Could Have Beaten Einstein To The Punch, Diego Castano

Mathematics Colloquium Series

Special Relativity was developed by Albert Einstein and relied crucially on Electromagnetism, a theory not fully developed until 1873. Yet there is nothing in the basic theory's development that requires physics beyond what Newton knew. A derivation of the theory based on Newton's laws and mathematical consistency is presented.

An Evolutionary Perspective On Increasing Student Success, And The (Partial) Fallacy Of First-Year Retention, Doug Mcelroy, Kate Mcelroy Nov 2017

An Evolutionary Perspective On Increasing Student Success, And The (Partial) Fallacy Of First-Year Retention, Doug Mcelroy, Kate Mcelroy

Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University

With state support for higher education declining and/or increasingly tied to performance outcomes, and greater emphasis being paid to the debt load incurred by students, student retention and success have become key drivers of universities’ strategic decision-making. Much effort has concentrated on first-year students; however, it may be more advantageous to pay greater attention to the fate of students at later points in their careers. We apply the concept of Reproductive Value to explore dynamics of retention rates, graduation rates, and degree production within and among seven state comprehensive universities. We ask: (1) Is enhanced first-year retention predictive of subsequent …
