Kumaraswamy Half-Logistic Distribution: Properties And Applications, Rana Muhammad Usman, Muhammad Ahsan Ul Haq, Junaid Talib
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
This study elucidates a three-parameter probabilistic model generalized from Kumaraswamy family using half logistic distribution as a baseline model named as Kumaraswamy half logistic distribution. The properties of the observed model are also explored. Further, we explain the behavior of failure rate, cumulative failure rate, and survival rate functions. Monte Carlo simulation study is being conducted to estimate the parameters under ML estimation method. Moreover, two practical applications illustrate the flexibility and better fit of the observed model.

The growth and study of materials showing novel topological states of matter is one of the frontiers in condensed matter physics. Among this class of materials, the nitride antiperovskite Cu3PdN has been proposed as a new three-dimensional Dirac semimetal. However, the experimental realization of Cu3PdN and the consequent study of its electronic properties have been hindered due to the difficulty of synthesizing this material. In this study, we report fabrication and both structural and transport characterization of epitaxial Cu3PdN thin films grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates by reactive magnetron sputtering and post-annealed in …

The questions of whether God reveals himself; if so, how we can know a purported revelation is authentic; and how such revelations relate to the insights of reason are discussed by John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, René Descartes, G. W. Leibniz, and Immanuel Kant, to name a few. Yet, what these philosophers say with such consistency about revelation stands in stark contrast with the claims of the Christian East, which are equally consistent from the second century through the fourteenth century. In this essay, I will compare the modern discussion of special revelation from Thomas Hobbes through Johann Fichte with the …

The first step in most geochronological studies is to extract dateable minerals from the host rock, which is time consuming, removes textural context, and increases the chance for sample cross contamination. We here present a new method to rapidly perform in situ analyses by coupling a fast scanning electron microscope (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDS) to a Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (LAICPMS) instrument. Given a polished hand specimen, a petrographic thin section, or a grain mount, Automated Phase Mapping (APM) by SEM/EDS produces chemical and mineralogical maps from which the X-Y coordinates of the datable …
Floodplain Impacts On Water Quality: A Case Study In Southern Louisiana, Emily Delduco
Floodplain Impacts On Water Quality: A Case Study In Southern Louisiana, Emily Delduco
LSU Master's Theses
The quantity and quality of dissolved carbon delivered to coastal margins by rivers is an important component of global carbon cycling. The Atchafalaya River (AR) discharges ~25% of the flow of the Mississippi River (MR) and the total flow of the Red River (RR) into the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) annually while flowing through the largest bottomland swamp in North America. This provides a unique opportunity to study floodplain impacts on dissolved carbon processes in a large river system. The research aimed to: (1) determine DIC and DOC transport and processing by a river swamp basin under varied seasons and …

On The Dense Families In The Relational Datamodel, Duc Thy Vu, Son Nguyen Hoang
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
In this paper, dense families of relation schemes are introduced. We characterize minimal keys of relation schemes in terms of dense families. Note that, the dense families of database relations were introduced by Jarvinen [6]. We prove that the set of all minimal keys of a relation scheme s= (U, F) is the transversal hypergraphs of a hypergraph D– {∅}, where Dis any s-dense family. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an abitrary family to be s-dense family. We also present some dense families of relation schemes. Furthermore, in this paper, we also study antikeys by means of …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The growth and self-assembly of molecules on surfaces can be directly visualized at the molecular level using studies which combine nanoscale lithography and high-resolution imaging. Nanopatterning provides a unique and practical approach for direct views of surface changes after the key chemical steps of nanopatterning, providing landmarks and baselines for measuring growth in vertical and lateral dimensions. Controlling the arrangement of materials on surfaces at the nanoscale can be achieved using particle lithography. Arrays of well-defined nanostructures can be prepared with reproducible geometries and arrangement. Results for the preparation of nanopatterns produced with particle lithography are presented using high resolution …

In the Earth's magnetosphere, the magnetotail plasma sheet ions are much hotter than in the shocked solar wind. On the dawn sector, the cold-component ions are more abundant and hotter by 30–40% when compared to the dusk sector. Recent statistical studies of the flank magnetopause and magnetosheath have shown that the level of temperature asymmetry of the magnetosheath is unable to account for this, so additional physical mechanisms must be at play, either at the magnetopause or plasma sheet that contributes to this asymmetry. In this study, we perform a statistical analysis on the ion-scale wave properties in the three …

Plato, Socrates And The Removal Of Confederate Monuments, Scott Berman
Plato, Socrates And The Removal Of Confederate Monuments, Scott Berman
Conference on Philosophy and Theology
Both Plato and Socrates would support the removal of confederate monuments because they thought that it was bad for communities to endorse harmful ideas. However, their explanations as to how harmful ideas such as white supremacy and slavery are bad for the communities are different. I shall be arguing that Socrates, not Plato, got it right and why that makes a difference.

In semiarid regions, where water resources are limited and precipitation dynamics are changing, understanding land surface-atmosphere interactions that regulate the coupled soil moistureprecipitation system is key for resource management and planning. We present a modeling approach to study soil moisture and albedo controls on planetary boundary layer height (PBLh). We used Santa Rita Creosote Ameriflux and Tucson Airport atmospheric sounding data to generate empirical relationships between soil moisture, albedo, and PBLh. Empirical relationships showed that ~50% of the variation in PBLh can be explained by soil moisture and albedo with additional knowledge gained by …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by loss of memory and intellectual abilities. Intracellular plaques of aggregated amyloid-beta (Ab) protein are a well-known pathology associated with AD. Although symptoms usually appear late in life, the accumulation of Ab begins decades earlier and causes activation of microglia, the brain’s immune cells. The ensuing inflammation contributes significantly to neurodegeneration. Determination of the particular form of Ab that causes the most damage in the brain is one of the major questions in the AD field. My research focused on the interactions of microglia with monomers, …

A measurement of vector boson scattering and constraints on anomalous quartic gauge couplings from events with two Z bosons and two jets are presented. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton–proton collisions at 𝑠=13TeV collected with the CMS detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1. The search is performed in the fully leptonic final state ZZ→ℓℓℓ′ℓ′, where ℓ,ℓ′=e or μ. The electroweak production of two Z bosons in association with two jets is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 2.7 (1.6) standard deviations. A fiducial cross section for the electroweak production is measured …

Treating Wrongs As Wrongs: An Expressive Argument For Tort Law, Scott Hershovitz
Treating Wrongs As Wrongs: An Expressive Argument For Tort Law, Scott Hershovitz
Articles
The idea that criminal punishment carries a message of condemnation is as commonplace as could be. Indeed, many think that condemnation is the mark of punishment, distinguishing it from other sorts of penalties or burdens. But for all that torts and crimes share in common, nearly no one thinks that tort has similar expressive aims. And that is unfortunate, as the truth is that tort is very much an expressive institution, with messages to send that are different, but no less important, than those conveyed by the criminal law. In this essay, I argue that tort liability expresses the judgment …

Introduction
Although previous research suggests that genetic variation in dopaminergic genes may affect recognition memory, the role dopamine transporter expression may have on the behavioral and EEG correlates of recognition memory has not been well established.
Objectives
The study aims to reveal how individual differences in dopaminergic functioning due to genetic variations in the dopamine transporter gene influences behavioral and EEG correlates of recognition memory.
Methods
Fifty‐eight participants performed an item recognition task. Participants were asked to retrieve 200 previously presented words while brain activity was recorded with EEG. Regions of interest were established in scalp locations associated with recognition …

Microgrid Energy Management With Flexibility Constraints: A Data-Driven Solution Method, Okan Ciftci
Microgrid Energy Management With Flexibility Constraints: A Data-Driven Solution Method, Okan Ciftci
LSU Master's Theses
Microgrid energy management is a challenging and important problem in modern power systems. Several deterministic and stochastic models have been proposed in the literature for the microgrid energy management problem. However, more accurate models are required to enhance flexibility of the microgrids when accounting for renewable energy and load uncertainties. This thesis proposes key contributions to solve the energy management problem for smart building (or small-scale microgrid). In Chapter 3, a deterministic energy management model is presented taking into account system flexibility requirements. Energy storage systems are deployed to enhance the grid flexibility and ramping capability. The objective function of …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Detecting dangerous riding behaviors is of great importance to improve bicycling safety. Existing bike safety precautionary measures rely on dedicated infrastructures that incur high installation costs. In this work, we propose BikeMate, a ubiquitous bicycling behavior monitoring system with smartphones. BikeMate invokes smartphone sensors to infer dangerous riding behaviors including lane weaving, standing pedalling and wrong-way riding. For easy adoption, BikeMate leverages transfer learning to reduce the overhead of training models for different users, and applies crowdsourcing to infer legal riding directions without prior knowledge. Experiments with 12 participants show that BikeMate achieves an overall accuracy of 86.8% for lane …

Education And Health Impacts Of An Affirmative Action Policy On Minorities In India, Robin Dhakal
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Article 334 of the Constitution of India (1950) stipulates that certain electoral districts in each state should be reserved for minority groups, namely the “Scheduled Caste”(SC) and the Scheduled Tribe”(ST), through the reservation of seats in the states' legislative assemblies. Even though the original article stated that the reservation policy would be in place for just twenty years, it has been amended several times and is still in effect. This dissertation examines the impact of the policy on the education and health outcomes of the SC population. Variations in seat quotas are generated by the timing of elections in different …

Issues Related To Carbon Dioxide Pipeline Transportation Infrastructure In Louisiana, Michael Allen Layne Iii
LSU Master's Theses
There is no single solution to mitigate anthropogenic climate change; a multifaceted approach with economic incentives is needed. Carbon dioxide (CO2) enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is one such solution which provides an economic incentive, in the capture and sale of oil, for sequestering CO2 underground. While carbon capture and subsequent geological injection are both mature technologies, there has been little discussion or appreciation for the role of pipelines. The current CO2 pipeline infrastructure will need to significantly expand in order to accommodate increasing EOR production. However, pipeline construction costs, and institutional factors impacting development, may be …
Polynomial Regression Analyses Of Parental Desirable Responding, Megan Elizabeth Lilly
Polynomial Regression Analyses Of Parental Desirable Responding, Megan Elizabeth Lilly
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Child assessments have consistently yielded poor agreement between parent-child self-report measures and considerable research has failed to isolate the underlying source of the discrepancies. Validity testing has successfully been used to differentiate credible from non-credible performance, recognize feigned symptoms, and detect underestimates of ability in adults for decades (Sherman, 2015). Despite these potential benefits, attention to the importance of validity testing in the child assessment literature has been largely neglected. Many psychologists believe children are not capable of feigning or exaggerating their symptoms and lack the underlying motivations and incentives for deception found in adult assessments. Whereas, more research is …
The Effects Of Joule Heating On Electric-Driven Microfluidic Flow, Alexander P. Spitzer
The Effects Of Joule Heating On Electric-Driven Microfluidic Flow, Alexander P. Spitzer
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
This study sought out to more clearly understand the relationship between Joule heating and fluid flow in microfluidic environments, and more specifically, under what circumstances would the fluid flow in the device possibly hinder an experiment being run on it. It had been previous theorised that an electric field may produce turbulence and even vortices within the fluid, which this study attempted to reproduce. Several variables were tested, namely insulating and conducting fluids, higher and lower AC voltages, Newtonian vs. non-Newtonian fluids, and higher and lower DC voltages. A correlation between these variables and turbulent flow was found, with more …
