Binary Classification On Past Due Of Service Accounts Using Logistic Regression And Decision Tree, Yan Wang, Jennifer L. Priestley Jan 2017

Binary Classification On Past Due Of Service Accounts Using Logistic Regression And Decision Tree, Yan Wang, Jennifer L. Priestley

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

This paper aims at predicting businesses’ past due in service accounts as well as determining the variables that impact the likelihood of repayment. Two binary classification approaches, logistic regression and the decision tree, were conducted and compared. Both approaches have very good performances with respect to the accuracy. However, the decision tree only uses 10 predictors and reaches an accuracy of 96.69% on the validation set while logistic regression includes 14 predictors and reaches an accuracy of 94.58%. Due to the large concern of false negatives in financial industry, the decision tree technique is a better option than logistic regression …

Logistic Ensemble Models, Bob Vanderheyden, Jennifer L. Priestley Jan 2017

Logistic Ensemble Models, Bob Vanderheyden, Jennifer L. Priestley

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

Predictive models that are developed in a regulated industry or a regulated application, like determination of credit worthiness must be interpretable and “rational” (e.g., improvements in basic credit behavior must result in improved credit worthiness scores). Machine Learning technologies provide very good performance with minimal analyst intervention, so they are well suited to a high volume analytic environment but the majority are “black box” tools that provide very limited insight or interpretability into key drivers of model performance or predicted model output values. This paper presents a methodology that blends one of the most popular predictive statistical modeling methods with …

A Comparison Of Decision Tree With Logistic Regression Model For Prediction Of Worst Non-Financial Payment Status In Commercial Credit, Jessica M. Rudd Mph, Gstat, Jennifer L. Priestley Jan 2017

A Comparison Of Decision Tree With Logistic Regression Model For Prediction Of Worst Non-Financial Payment Status In Commercial Credit, Jessica M. Rudd Mph, Gstat, Jennifer L. Priestley

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

Credit risk prediction is an important problem in the financial services domain. While machine learning techniques such as Support Vector Machines and Neural Networks have been used for improved predictive modeling, the outcomes of such models are not readily explainable and, therefore, difficult to apply within financial regulations. In contrast, Decision Trees are easy to explain, and provide an easy to interpret visualization of model decisions. The aim of this paper is to predict worst non-financial payment status among businesses, and evaluate decision tree model performance against traditional Logistic Regression model for this task. The dataset for analysis is provided …

Cognitive Biases And Reflexive Control, Natalie Minton Jan 2017

Cognitive Biases And Reflexive Control, Natalie Minton

Honors Theses

Manipulating an opponent is nothing new to warfare, but what is new is the understanding behind modern tactics, psychology, and the how the two intertwine under real world circumstances. One modern tactic, particularly used by the Russian government, is called reflexive control. This hybrid warfare tactic is used to manipulate an opponent into unknowingly making decisions benefiting the manipulator while harming the opponent. Though executed through many outlets, reflexive control is aimed at flaws within the opponent's decision making process. Many such flaws are categorized as cognitive biases derived from mental shortcuts that can lead the brain to misjudge information. …

Cytotoxicity Assay Of Self-Assembling Protein-Based Biomaterials, Peyton Vaughan Jan 2017

Cytotoxicity Assay Of Self-Assembling Protein-Based Biomaterials, Peyton Vaughan

Honors Theses

Acute inflammation is a natural biological defensive response against infection, irritation, and injury. While inflammation is a natural process, chronic tissue inflammation has been implicated in the development of several different diseases. With the intent of minimizing collateral damage associated with long-term exposure of healthy tissues to anti-inflammatory drugs, the Pedigo laboratory has designed a system for the self-assembly of protein polymers as scaffolds for controlled-release of drugs to affected tissues. This protein polymer comprises two essential components, with the first component being the calcium-dependent protein, calmodulin, and the second being a corresponding binding peptide, M13. Because Calmodulin has a specific, …

Utilizing Natural Language Processing And Other Technical Tools To Automate The Financial Modeling Process While Maintaining Robustness In The Model, Robert Forrest Short

Honors Theses

The objective of this thesis is to improve upon the most commonly utilized, entirely manual financial modeling process. This thesis gives guidance for implementing a set of technical tools that can be utilized in an individual's financial modeling process to automate repetitive and predictable tasks. The goal is not to provide a robust set of tools that can be implemented across all financial models; in fact, this may not be possible. The goal is to provide a basis for anyone who utilizes financial modeling to study their own modeling processes and adapt the given tools to fit into and improve …

Quercitrin And Afzelin Isolation: Chemical Synthesis Of A Novel Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (Mrsa) Antibiotic Analogue, Taylor Ramsaroop

Honors Theses

The increasing prevalence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is an epidemic where once easily treated infectious illnesses are becoming more difficult to treat, leading to prolonged suffering, exacerbated medical costs, and sometimes death. Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is a strain of the Staph Infection causing bacteria that is resistant to penicillin-like beta lactam antibiotics and occurs at a high incidence in several countries in Europe, the Americas, and the Asia-Pacific region. In a routine screening of plant extracts, an extract of American Sycamore leaves (Plantus occidentalis) was noted to show promising activity against the experimental MRSA strain included in the …

The Implementation Of Multicultural Literature In The Secondary English Classroom: A Preservice Teacher's Experience, Jenna L. Smiley Jan 2017

The Implementation Of Multicultural Literature In The Secondary English Classroom: A Preservice Teacher's Experience, Jenna L. Smiley

Honors Theses

Even though the United States is more diverse than ever before in its history, selected literary texts in the secondary English curriculum have largely remained the same over past decades with minimal inclusion of multicultural literature - literature that is written by or about minority cultures. Multicultural literature is a subset of the greater idea of multicultural education, which is an education that is inclusive of all cultures with the goal of preparing all students to be productive citizens in a diverse, global society. Teachers are hesitant to use multicultural literature because of their implicit biases, neglect of inquiry, and …

Honors Theses

In this project, different coffee brews were analyzed in order to determine the effects the brewing method had on the final product, particularly the acid profile of the final product. Our hypothesis is that the use of a cold brewing method will produce different amounts of caffeine and chlorogenic acids in the final brewed product compared to traditional hot brewing methods. There are many brewing methods available. For the purposes of this research, three were chosen and one was created. The three chosen methods were: a traditional drip brew, a cold brew, and a Pezzetti espresso brew. The final method …

An Analysis Of Entrepreneurial Education In The Criminal Justice System, Austin Powell Jan 2017

An Analysis Of Entrepreneurial Education In The Criminal Justice System, Austin Powell

Honors Theses

Currently, American federal and state prisons release more than 600,000 offenders each year that contribute to the estimated 70 million or more Americans that have some form of criminal record. By holding a criminal record, successful reentry for offenders are difficult because the criminal record serves as a barrier to public benefits. There are many correctional education programs designed to help offenders while in prison to overcome these barriers. Entrepreneurial education programs are becoming more popular, due to the positive recidivism and post-release employment results. The purpose of this study is to compare entrepreneurial education to other programs while analyzing …

Synthesis Of Cross-Conjugated Dibenzochrysene-Based Photosensitizers For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Bailey Nicole Flamm Jan 2017

Synthesis Of Cross-Conjugated Dibenzochrysene-Based Photosensitizers For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Bailey Nicole Flamm

Honors Theses

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) represent a promising alternative method of energy generation. Absorbance of light across the visible spectrum and into the near-infrared (NIR) region is crucial to increasing the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of DSC devices. Dye absorbance can be red-shifted by either increasing the conjugation path of the photosensitizer or by increasing the strength of electron donors and acceptors found in molecules. By using a polycyclic aromatic Ï€-bridge in a dye, lower energy wavelengths of light can be absorbed. Dibenzochrysene is a six-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) with substitutable positions that allow for a double-donor, double-acceptor (DD-Ï€-AA) structure, …

Towards The Synthesis Of A Polyamine Perylenebisimide Derivative For Intercalation Into Quadruplex Dna, Bobby May Jan 2017

Towards The Synthesis Of A Polyamine Perylenebisimide Derivative For Intercalation Into Quadruplex Dna, Bobby May

Honors Theses

Perylenebisimide intercalation in G-quadruplex DNA is an area of study that has increasing interest in cancer research. The ability of perylenebisimides to interrupt the structures of the G4 DNA on the end of telomeres has allowed for the observation of how the variable-regions of the perylenebisimide can have differing effects on anticancer properties. The purpose of this experiment was to synthesize a perylenebisimide with the intentions of observing its intercalating properties with G-quadruplex DNA. In order to accomplish this, dibenzylamine was substituted onto chloroacetonitrile through an SN2 reaction to produce 2-(dibenzylamino)acetonitrile. The 2-(dibenzylamino)acetonitrile was then reduced with LAH to yield …

Cadmium Disruption Of Calcium-Dependent Dimerization Of Neural Cadherin, Dylan Ritter Jan 2017

Cadmium Disruption Of Calcium-Dependent Dimerization Of Neural Cadherin, Dylan Ritter

Honors Theses

Cadherins are a family of transmembrane proteins that dimerize to form junctions between cells in the presence of calcium. Due to the necessity for proper cell adhesion during cell differentiation in development, we are examining whether binding of other metallic divalent cations would disrupt calcium-sensitive dimerization of neural cadherin in vitro. Specifically, we are studying the effect of cadmium(II) on the linkage between calcium binding, dimerization, and dimer disassembly. Cadmium toxicity became recognized during the Industrial Revolution, with particular attention gained during the Itai-Itai disease outbreak in China during the 1910s. This toxicity, partnered with the role of cadherin in …

Exponential Laminations, Patrick Barry Hartley Jan 2017

Exponential Laminations, Patrick Barry Hartley

All ETDs from UAB

Laminations have proved useful in proving facts about polynomial Julia sets. In this thesis, a process by which to construct laminations for certain exponential Julia sets will be presented. This thesis will consider those exponential Julia sets where hairs are identified at a single repelling fixed point, as opposed to multiple repelling fixed points or repelling periodic points. This construction will make use of known facts about the complex exponential function and an itinerary system similar to those used in polynomial laminations.

Comparative Analysis Of New Techniques For Hearing Conservation Program Selection, Laura Hurst Jan 2017

Comparative Analysis Of New Techniques For Hearing Conservation Program Selection, Laura Hurst

All ETDs from UAB

Hazardous noise is a widespread problem in industry and recreation. Noise induced hearing loss is one of the most frequently reported occupational health claims worldwide. While there has been much research on noise, its effects, and how to prevent hearing loss in industry, there is limited research available to help quantify the difference that monitoring noise at a lower threshold might create in the measured exposure estimate. Additionally, the studies involving the use of different noise monitoring settings do not attempt to explain how the results might change the outcomes when using data and statistical techniques to classify similar exposure …

Microporosity Formation Analysis Of Low-Lead And Leaded Copper Alloys, Aaron Kelley Jan 2017

Microporosity Formation Analysis Of Low-Lead And Leaded Copper Alloys, Aaron Kelley

All ETDs from UAB

The theory of predicting the formation of microporosity in specific alloy fami-lies—steel, aluminum, nickel, and magnesium— is particularly well developed, and it has become a common practice over the past several years. Combining a long solidification range, low thermal gradient, high cooling rate, and dissolved gases can lead to significant amounts of microporosity formation in these alloys. The use of the Niyama criterion has become a common tool for predicting the formation of microporosity in these alloy families. While the use of the Niyama criterion to predict microporosity formation has become routine for the alloys stated above, it is still …

Univariate Frailty Model For Competing Risks Data Analysis, Yuliang Liu Jan 2017

Univariate Frailty Model For Competing Risks Data Analysis, Yuliang Liu

All ETDs from UAB

Unobserved individual heterogeneity, that is frailty, is a major concern in the application of analysis for competing risks data. Unlike the study of clustered competing risks data using multivariate frailty models, we have not found a study of non-clustered competing risks data using univariate frailty model. This dissertation focuses on developing frailty models for the analysis of non-clustered competing risks data. The estimation of the effects of covariates by a parametric univariate frailty model could be a useful approach when heterogeneity must be considered in the non-clustered competing risks setting. In paper 1, we compared the performance of the Cox, …

Nine out of every ten adults had at least a high school or general education diploma, but when it comes to a higher degree only one out of every three adults held a higher degree. To overcome this problem, we need to attract more students by implementing scientific STEM projects where they can actively work on and give them a …

A Metrically Defined Uniformization Map Of Planar Domains, Ivan Holden Mann Jan 2017

A Metrically Defined Uniformization Map Of Planar Domains, Ivan Holden Mann

All ETDs from UAB

Let D be the unit disk in the Riemann sphere C and D ∞ = C\D be its complement. A standard way to uniformize a proper simply connected domain U ⊂ C containing 0 is to consider a Riemann map φ : D → U such that 0 maps to 0. Images in D ∞ of radial line segments are called conformal rays. Brouwer defines metric rays in U using the centers of maximal balls touching ∂U and a function ψ, which we call here the Brouwer map. We use a new definition len of length under which every path …

Valid Plane Trees: Combinatorial Models For Rna Secondary Structures With Watson-Crick Base Pairs, Francis Black, Elizabeth Drellich, Julianna Tymoczko Jan 2017

Valid Plane Trees: Combinatorial Models For Rna Secondary Structures With Watson-Crick Base Pairs, Francis Black, Elizabeth Drellich, Julianna Tymoczko

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

. The combinatorics of RNA plays a central role in biology. Mathematical biologists have several commonly used models for RNA: words in a fixed alphabet (representing the primary sequence of nucleotides) and plane trees (representing the secondary structure, or folding of the RNA sequence). This paper considers an augmented version of the standard model of plane trees, specifically one that incorporates some observed constraints on how the folding can occur. In particular we assume the alphabet consists of complementary pairs, for instance the Watson–Crick pairs A-U and C-G of RNA. Given a word in the alphabet, a valid plane tree …

Vb-Groupoids And Representation Theory Of Lie Groupoids, Alfonso Gracia-Saz, Rajan Amit Mehta Jan 2017

Vb-Groupoids And Representation Theory Of Lie Groupoids, Alfonso Gracia-Saz, Rajan Amit Mehta

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

A VB-groupoid is a Lie groupoid equipped with a compatible linear structure. In this paper, we describe a correspondence, up to isomorphism, between VB-groupoids and 2-term representations up to homotopy of Lie groupoids. Under this correspondence, the tangent bundle of a Lie groupoid G corresponds to the “adjoint representation” of G. The value of this point of view is that the tangent bundle is canonical, whereas the adjoint representation is not. We define a cochain complex that is canonically associated to any VB-groupoid. The cohomology of this complex is isomorphic to the groupoid cohomology with values in the corresponding representations …

All ETDs from UAB

Cast iron is the most common as-cast materials used in present time. Various grades of cast iron have been developed by modifying process parameters to meet the property re-quirements. Destructive and nondestructive tests are routinely performed to maintain the integrity of the produced cast iron. Numerical and multiple linear regression models have also been developed to obtain mechanical properties from process variables such as chem-ical composition, cooling rate, liquid metal treatment. The applicability of property predic-tion models were studied by comparing predicted mechanical properties reported in pub-lished literature. Summary of the comparison is reported to guide cast iron producers to …
