Room Temperature Tunneling Switches And Methods Of Making And Using The Same, Yoke Khin Yap

Michigan Tech Patents

The tunneling channel of a field effect transistor comprising a plurality of tunneling elements contacting a channel substrate. Applying a source-drain voltage of greater than a turn-on voltage produces a source-drain current of greater than about 10 pA. Applying a source-drain voltage of less than a turn-on voltage produces a source-drain current of less than about 10 pA. The turn-on voltage at room temperature is between about 0.1V and about 40V.

What Is Not Where: The Challenge Of Integrating Spatial Representations Into Deep Learning Architectures, John D. Kelleher, Simon Dobnik Nov 2017

What Is Not Where: The Challenge Of Integrating Spatial Representations Into Deep Learning Architectures, John D. Kelleher, Simon Dobnik

Books/Book chapters

This paper examines to what degree current deep learning architectures for image caption generation capture spatial lan- guage. On the basis of the evaluation of examples of generated captions from the literature we argue that systems capture what objects are in the image data but not where these objects are located: the cap- tions generated by these systems are the output of a language model conditioned on the output of an object detector that cannot capture fine-grained location information. Although language models provide useful knowledge for image captions, we argue that deep learning image captioning architectures should also model geometric …

A Spatial Collaboration: Building A Multi-Institution Geospatial Data Discovery Portal, Mara Blake, Karen Majewicz, Ryan Mattke, Kathleen W. Weessies

Collaborative Librarianship

As academic education and research increasingly take advantage of geospatial data and methodologies, we see a corresponding exponential growth in the number of available geospatial resources in the form of GIS datasets and scanned historical maps. However, users can experience difficulty finding these resources due to the unconnected multitude of platforms and clearinghouses that host them. Additionally, the resources are not always well described with web semantic metadata that facilitates discovery. In response to this challenge, The Big Ten Academic Alliance Geospatial Data Project began in 2015 to provide discoverability, facilitate access, and connect scholars to geospatial resources. Our project …

The Class Is Greener On The Other Side: How Private Donations To Public Schools Play Into Fair Funding, Abigail Margaret Frisch Nov 2017

The Class Is Greener On The Other Side: How Private Donations To Public Schools Play Into Fair Funding, Abigail Margaret Frisch

Duke Law Journal

It has been observed that forays into public education finance resemble Russian novels-"long, tedious, and everybody dies in the end." On any given day, dozens of news stories describe schools nationwide struggling to make ends meet. And, just as "each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way," each underfunded school is underfunded in its own complicated way. Funding for public education comes from many places, chief among them local property taxes, at least historically. States-which bear primary responsibility for administering their education systems-and private litigants have struggled for over sixty years to produce funding formulas that weaken the link …

Genetic Algorithm Based Solution In Pwm Converter Switching For Voltage Source Inverter Feeding An Induction Motor Drive, Jegathesan V. Nov 2017

Genetic Algorithm Based Solution In Pwm Converter Switching For Voltage Source Inverter Feeding An Induction Motor Drive, Jegathesan V.

ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development

This paper presents an efficient and reliable Genetic Algorithm based solution for Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) switching pattern. This method eliminates considerable amount of lower order line voltage harmonics in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) inverter. Determination of pulse pattern for the elimination of some lower order harmonics of a PWM inverter necessitates solving a system of nonlinear transcendental equations. Genetic Algorithm is used to solve nonlinear transcendental equations for PWM-SHE. Many methods are available to eliminate the higher order harmonics and it can be easily removed. But the greatest challenge is to eliminate the lower order harmonics and this is …

Characterizing The Electromechanical Response Of Flexible Foam For Multifunctional Impact-Sensing Applications, Evan Troy Bird Nov 2017

Characterizing The Electromechanical Response Of Flexible Foam For Multifunctional Impact-Sensing Applications, Evan Troy Bird

Theses and Dissertations

Flexible foams have unique properties that make them well-suited to several engineering systems. They are often used in impact-related applications because of their superior energy absorption performance. Many multifunctional materials are also derived from flexible foams due to their high customizability, which allows them to satisfy a wide range of performance requirements. Though flexible foams have high potential in these and other classes of material applications, their success relies on the proper characterization of their complex behavior. This thesis promotes the application of flexible foams by characterizing their electromechanical response through both experimental and theoretical approaches. One study in this …

Toward Improving Metalloenzyme Inhibitor Design: A Thermodynamic Study Of Small Molecule Interactions With Copper(Ii), Cobalt(Ii) And Manganese(Ii), Fatimah Aldakheel Nov 2017

Toward Improving Metalloenzyme Inhibitor Design: A Thermodynamic Study Of Small Molecule Interactions With Copper(Ii), Cobalt(Ii) And Manganese(Ii), Fatimah Aldakheel

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This work aimed at understanding the interactions of 1) three physiologically relevant transition metal ions copper(II), cobalt(II) and manganese(II) with five tri- or tetra-dentate metal chelators (ligand or L) and 2) the resulting ML complexes with two known metalloenzyme inhibitors, 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) and acetohydroxamic acid (AHA). The ultimate goal of the work was to identify ligands that can form enzyme active site M2+ structural mimetics capable of interacting with metalloenzyme active site inhibitors. The ligands studied were N-(2-(1-methylimidazolyl)methyl)iminodiacetic acid (DA2Im), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN), tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA), and bis(2-picolyl)amine (BPA) and they were chosen to mimic the coordination environment …

No Evidence For Trace Metal Limitation On Anaerobic Carbon Mineralization In Three Peatland Soils, Jason K. Keller, Jillian Wade Nov 2017

No Evidence For Trace Metal Limitation On Anaerobic Carbon Mineralization In Three Peatland Soils, Jason K. Keller, Jillian Wade

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Peatlands store roughly one-third of the terrestrial soil carbon and release the potent greenhouse gas methane (CH4) to the atmosphere, making these wetlands among the most important ecosystems in the global carbon cycle. Despite their importance, the controls of anaerobic decomposition of organic matter to carbon dioxide (CO2) and CH4 within peatlands are not well understood. It is known, however, that the enzymes responsible for CH4 production require cobalt, iron and nickel, and there is a growing appreciation for the potential role of trace metal limitation in anaerobic decomposition. To explore the possibility of …

Spectres Of Ambiguity In Divergent Thinking And Perceptual Switching, M Taranu, F Loesche Nov 2017

Spectres Of Ambiguity In Divergent Thinking And Perceptual Switching, M Taranu, F Loesche

School of Psychology

Divergent thinking as a creative ability and perceptual switching between different interpretations of an unchanging stimulus (known as perceptual multistability) are thought to rely on similar processes. In the current study, we investigate to what extent task instructions and inherent stimulus characteristics influence participants' responses. In the first experiment, participants were asked to give as many interpretations for six images as possible. In the second experiment, participants reported which of two possible interpretations they saw at any moment for the same line drawings. From these two experiments, we extracted measures that allow us direct comparison between tasks. Results show that …

Analyzing Ambiguity In The Standard Definition Of Creativity, T Colin Nov 2017

Analyzing Ambiguity In The Standard Definition Of Creativity, T Colin

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The increasingly rich and diverse literature on creativity has its core in psychology, but spans the cognitive sciences from artificial intelligence to philosophy and borrows from the wider humanities. Perhaps because of this immense breadth, there remains considerable disagreement with respect to the identity of the object of research. How to define creativity? According to the “standard definition,” creativity consists of “e?ectiveness and originality.” This definition is (relatively) consensual and therefore appears to capture something common to academic concepts of creativity. I conduct a conceptual analysis of the definition; thereby, I isolate and describe two ambiguities. Firstly, the defini-tion leaves …

Creation Through Polychronization, J Matthias Nov 2017

Creation Through Polychronization, J Matthias

School of Art, Design and Architecture

I have recently suggested that some of the processes involved in the collaborative composition of new music could be analogous to several ideas introduced by Izhikevich in his theory of cortical spiking neurons and simple memory, a process which he calls Polychronization. In the Izhikevich model, the evocation of simple memories is achieved by the sequential re-firing of the same Polychronous group of neurons which was initially created in the cerebral cortex by the sensual stimulus. Each firing event within the group is contingent upon the previous firing event and, in particular, contingent upon the timing of the firings, due …

Geographic Distribution Of Siphonaptera Collected From Small Mammals On Lake Michigan Islands, William C. Scharf Nov 2017

Geographic Distribution Of Siphonaptera Collected From Small Mammals On Lake Michigan Islands, William C. Scharf

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The distribution of ten flea species collected from five small mammal host species on 13 Lake Michigan islands is described. Four new eastern and southern records for Hystrichopsylla dippiei Rothschild are given. Speculative suggestions are made regarding dispersal routes of some of the small mammal host species, and the distribution of flea species from Peromyscus maniculatus gracilis LeConte is dis- cussed in the context of island biogeography theory.

Siphonaptera Records And Host Associations From The Central And Eastern Upper Peninsula Of Michigan, William C. Scharf, Patrick E. Lederle, Thomas A. Allan

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Fleas were collected from birds and mammals over a five year period in four upper peninsula counties. Identified specimens were compared to published records of distribution for the parasite species and its host species, and only those records which are new county distributions for host or parasite are listed. Four new host records for Michigan, four new flea distribution records for the upper peninsula, and 26 new county records are listed.

Aggregation Behavior Of A Willow Flea Beetle, Altica Subplicata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Catherine E. Bach, Deborah S. Carr Nov 2017

Aggregation Behavior Of A Willow Flea Beetle, Altica Subplicata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Catherine E. Bach, Deborah S. Carr

The Great Lakes Entomologist

This study examined the aggregation behavior of a specialist insect herbivore, Altica subplicata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), on its host plant, Salix cordata. Mark-recapture experiments were conducted in patches of S. cordata growing along the shores of Lake Huron. Beetles aggregated on individual host plants, but did not aggregate in larger areas containing many host plants. Plants colonized by marked beetles had significantly higher abundances of unmarked beetles than did plants that were not colonized by marked beetles.

Experimental manipulations of the number of beetles present on plants showed that colonization rates by marked beetles were higher on plants with conspecifics …

Quantifying Non-Cooperative Climate Engineering, Johannes Emmerling, Massimo Tavoni Nov 2017

Quantifying Non-Cooperative Climate Engineering, Johannes Emmerling, Massimo Tavoni

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The mismatch between actions to combat climate change, which are based on voluntary national initiatives of limited effort, and the recognition of the importance of global warming is growing. Climate engineering via solar radiation management has been proposed as a possible complement to traditional climate policies. However, climate engineering entails specific risks, including its governance. Free driving, the possibility of unilateral climate engineering to the detriment of other nations, has been recently proposed as a potentially powerful additional externality to the traditional free riding one (Weitzman, 2015). This paper provides the first quantitative evaluation of the risks of free driving. …

On The Time Variation Of Dust Extinction And Gas Absorption For Type Ia Supernovae Observed Through A Nonuniform Interstellar Medium, Xiaosheng Huang, G Aldering, M. Biederman, B. Herger Nov 2017

On The Time Variation Of Dust Extinction And Gas Absorption For Type Ia Supernovae Observed Through A Nonuniform Interstellar Medium, Xiaosheng Huang, G Aldering, M. Biederman, B. Herger

Physics and Astronomy

For Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) observed through a nonuniform interstellar medium (ISM) in its host galaxy, we investigate whether the nonuniformity can cause observable time variations in dust extinction and in gas absorption due to the expansion of the SN photosphere with time. We show that, owing to the steep spectral index of the ISM density power spectrum, sizable density fluctuation amplitudes at the length scale of typical ISM structures () will translate to much smaller fluctuations on the scales of an SN photosphere. Therefore, the typical amplitude of time variation due to a nonuniform ISM, of absorption equivalent …

Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Of Amyloid Β At Neuronal Spines., Mohammadali Tabatabaei, Fabiana A Caetano, Farshid Pashee, Stephen S G Ferguson, François Lagugné-Labarthet Nov 2017

Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Of Amyloid Β At Neuronal Spines., Mohammadali Tabatabaei, Fabiana A Caetano, Farshid Pashee, Stephen S G Ferguson, François Lagugné-Labarthet

Chemistry Publications

The early stages of Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis are thought to occur at the synapse level, since synapse loss can be directly correlated with memory dysfunction. Considerable evidence has suggested that amyloid beta (Aβ), a secreted proteolytic derivative of amyloid precursor protein, appears to be a critical factor in the early 'synaptic failure' that is observed in Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. The identification of Aβ at neuronal spines with high spatial resolution and high surface specificity would facilitate unraveling the intricate effect of Aβ on synapse loss and its effect on neighboring neuronal connections. Here, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy was used to map …

The Role Of Carbon On Copper–Carbon Composites For The Electrooxidation Of Alcohols In An Alkaline Medium, Leticia García-Cruz, Conchi O. Ania, Ana Paula Carvalho, Teresa Bandosz, Vicente Montiel, Jesús Iniesta Nov 2017

The Role Of Carbon On Copper–Carbon Composites For The Electrooxidation Of Alcohols In An Alkaline Medium, Leticia García-Cruz, Conchi O. Ania, Ana Paula Carvalho, Teresa Bandosz, Vicente Montiel, Jesús Iniesta

Publications and Research

Copper–carbon composites were prepared following various different synthetic routes and using various carbon precursors (i.e., lignocellulose and graphite oxide), andwere used as electrocatalysts for the oxidation of propargyl alcohol (PGA) in an alkaline medium. The electrochemical response of the copper-based catalysts was analyzed in terms of the influence of the metallic species, the carbon matrix incorporated in the composites, and the chemical structure of the ionomers—Nafion and poly (4-vinylpyridine) cross-linked methyl chloride quaternary salt resin (4VP)—used in the fabrication of the electrodes. Data has shown that the incorporation of reduced graphene oxide sheets between the copper metallic particles increased the …

Effective Teacher Characteristics: Future Teachers' Voices, Gavrielle Levine Nov 2017

Effective Teacher Characteristics: Future Teachers' Voices, Gavrielle Levine

NERA Conference Proceedings 2017

Pre-service teacher candidates (n=688) voluntarily responded to the open-ended question: List the characteristics that you think are important for a mathematics teacher [in elementary school] to have. The most frequently-cited characteristic was ‘patience,’ with ‘knowledge of mathematics content’ next, followed (in alphabetical order) by creative, enthusiastic, effective instruction, flexible instruction, and understanding (that not all students learn the same way). These data suggest that candidates are developing a sense of themselves as professionals with a growing understanding that content knowledge as well as relationships with students are needed for effective teaching.

Development Of Some Scalable Pattern Recognition Algorithms For Real Life Data Analysis, Partha Garai Nov 2017

Development Of Some Scalable Pattern Recognition Algorithms For Real Life Data Analysis, Partha Garai

Doctoral Theses

A huge amount of data is being generated continuously as a result of recent advancement and wide use of high-throughput technologies. With the rapid increase in size of data distributed worldwide, understanding the data has become critical. In this regard, dimensionality reduction and clustering have become the necessary preprocessing steps of multiple research areas and applications. One of the important problems of real life large data sets is uncertainty. Some of the sources of this uncertainty include imprecision in computation and vagueness in class denitions. The uncertainty may also be present in the denition of class membership function. In this …

U–Pb Dating Of Cave Spar: A New Shallow Crust Landscape Evolution Tool, D. D. Decker, V. J. Ployak, Y. Asmeron, Matthew Lachniet

Geoscience Faculty Research

In carbonate terranes, rocks types that provide apatite are not available to effectively use apatite fission track (AFT) or (U/Th)‐He chronometry (AHe). Here we suggest that calcite cave spar can be an effective chronometer and complimentary to AFT and AHe thermochronometers in carbonate regions such as our study area, the Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico, and west Texas. Our measured depth of cave spar deposition is 500 ± 250 m beneath the regional water table, formed at temperatures of 40° to 80°C, indicating that these caves and their spar crystals form near the supercritical CO2‐subcritical CO2 boundary where we …

"The Effects Of Ocean Warming And Sedimentation On The Survival And Growth Of Acropora Cervicornis" And "Differential Prevalence Of Chimerism During Embryogenesis In Corals", Hayley De Marchis

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Part I:

Coral reefs are essential to coastal economies, protecting coastlines from storms, and harboring high biodiversity. However, reefs are declining due to local anthropogenic stressors and ocean warming. Sedimentation, a local stressor, aggravates the impacts of warming on corals and hinders their survival and growth. Therefore, it is important to investigate whether sedimentation and temperature have a synergistic effect on vulnerable coral species, especially during earlier stages of development. To quantify these effects, survival and growth of newly settled Acropora cervicornis corals were measured at two temperatures (29 and 31°C, representing current and predicted for 2050 Summer temperatures) and …
