An Automated Controller Design Methodology For Six Degree-Of-Freedom Aircraft Models, Dominic J. Dierker Jan 2017

An Automated Controller Design Methodology For Six Degree-Of-Freedom Aircraft Models, Dominic J. Dierker

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an automated design methodology for development of six degree-of-freedom aircraft controllers. The essential functions required of the controller design are 1) to provide sufficient inner loop compensation to guarantee dynamic stability and acceptable handling qualities over the full flight envelope, and, 2) to enable automated mission following capabilities through implementation of outer loop trackers. A hierarchical control architecture consisting of nested nonlinear dynamic inversion control loops is proposed as a means of achieving these top level objectives. Gain tuning based on an automated linearization methodology is then suggested. Next, an automated optimal control allocation algorithm is tested …

Calibration Models And System Development For Compressive Sensing With Micromirror Arrays, Rebecca L. Profeta Jan 2017

Calibration Models And System Development For Compressive Sensing With Micromirror Arrays, Rebecca L. Profeta

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Compressive sensing (CS) is an active research field focused on finding solutions to sparse linear inverse problems, i.e. estimating a signal using fewer linear measurements than there are unknowns. The assumption of signal sparsity makes solutions to this otherwise ill-posed problem possible and has lead to a number of technological innovations such as smaller and less expensive cameras that capture high resolution imagery, low-power radar systems, and accelerated MRI scanners. In this thesis, we present the development of a hardware CS imaging system using a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) providing spatial light modulation via an array of micromirrors that can …

Social media has brought people closer than ever before, but the use of social media has also brought with it a risk of online harassment. Such harassment can have a serious impact on a person such as causing low self-esteem and depression. The past research on detecting harassment on social media is primarily based on the content of messages exchanged on social media. The lack of context when relying on a single social media post can result in a high degree of false alarms. In this study, I focus on the reliable detection of harassment on Twitter by better understanding …

Semantic Web Foundations For Representing, Reasoning, And Traversing Contextualized Knowledge Graphs, Vinh Thi Kim Nguyen Jan 2017

Semantic Web Foundations For Representing, Reasoning, And Traversing Contextualized Knowledge Graphs, Vinh Thi Kim Nguyen

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Semantic Web technologies such as RDF and OWL have become World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards for knowledge representation and reasoning. RDF triples about triples, or meta triples, form the basis for a contextualized knowledge graph. They represent the contextual information about individual triples such as the source, the occurring time or place, or the certainty. However, an efficient RDF representation for such meta-knowledge of triples remains a major limitation of the RDF data model. The existing reification approach allows such meta-knowledge of RDF triples to be expressed in RDF by using four triples per reified triple. While reification is …

Automated Rendering Of Schema Diagram For Ontologies, Nazifa Karima Jan 2017

Automated Rendering Of Schema Diagram For Ontologies, Nazifa Karima

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Semantic Web extends the current web, using ontologies, metadata and other technologies to establish links between terms and concepts. This enables machines to automatically integrate information across different platforms utilizing the standard definitions. Furthermore, reasoning agents can infer new knowledge by gathering existing information and these additional connections between them. As a result of being designed and maintained independently, data sources exhibit highly heterogeneous nature. This increases the complexity of data integration and hinders interoperability. However, if we can align the overlapping concepts among different domains of knowledge, the prospect of achieving interoperability and integration without having any intermediate reasoning …

Towards A Prediction Of Landscape Evolution From Chemical Weathering And Soil Production, Eric Alan Jackson Jan 2017

Towards A Prediction Of Landscape Evolution From Chemical Weathering And Soil Production, Eric Alan Jackson

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The time evolution of a periodic landscape under the influence of chemical weathering and physical erosion is computed. The model used incorporates weathering and soil production as a flux limited reaction controlled by groundwater flow. Scaling of the flow rate is obtained from a percolation theoretic treatment. The erosion of the soil material produced by this process is modeled by the diffusion of elevation, as consistent with downslope soil transport proportional to the tangent of the angle of the topography, and application of the equation of continuity to surface soil transport. Three initial topographies are examined over a periods of …

Development Of An Ultra-Portable Non-Contact Wound Measurement System, Anka Babu Billa

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Continuous monitoring of changes in wound size is key to correctly predict whether wounds will heal readily with conventional treatment or require more aggressive treatment strategies. Unfortunately, existing wound measurement solutions don't meet the clinical demand due to their limitations in accuracy, operating complexity and time, acquisition and operation cost, or reproducibility, resulting in unnecessarily lengthy recovery or extra treatment procedures, incurring an excessively high financial cost, and in many cases extended usage of addictive painkillers. In this thesis, we proposed and developed a low cost, a portable non-contact solution that combines multi-spectral imaging and a portfolio of imaging processing …

Joint Hierarchical Models For Sparsely Sampled High-Dimensional Lidar And Forest Variables, Andrew O. Finley, Sudipto Banerjee, Yuzhen Zhou, Bruce D. Cook, Chad Babcock

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Recent advancements in remote sensing technology, specifically Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors, provide the data needed to quantify forest characteristics at a fine spatial resolution over large geographic domains. From an inferential standpoint, there is interest in prediction and interpolation of the often sparsely sampled and spatially misaligned LiDAR signals and forest variables. We propose a fully process-based Bayesian hierarchical model for above ground biomass (AGB) and LiDAR signals. The processbased framework offers richness in inferential capabilities, e.g., inference on the entire underlying processes instead of estimates only at pre-specified points. Key challenges we obviate include misalignment between the …

Recent Developments In Accuracy And Stability Improvement Of Nonlinear Filter Methods For Dns And Les Of Compressible Flows, Helen Yee, Björn Sjögreen Jan 2017

Recent Developments In Accuracy And Stability Improvement Of Nonlinear Filter Methods For Dns And Les Of Compressible Flows, Helen Yee, Björn Sjögreen

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Recent progress in the improvement of numerical stability and accuracy of the Yee and Sjögreen [49] high order nonlinear filter schemes is described. The Yee & Sjögreen adaptive nonlinear filter method consists of a high order non-dissipative spatial base scheme and a nonlinear filter step. The nonlinear filter step consists of a flow sensor and the dissipative portion of a high resolution nonlinear high order shock-capturing method to guide the application of the shock-capturing dissipation where needed. The nonlinear filter idea was first initiated by Yee et al. [54] using an artificial compression method (ACM) of Harten [12] as the …

Skew-Symmetric Splitting And Stability Of High Order Central Schemes, Björn Sjögreen, Helen C. Yee, Dmitry Kotov Jan 2017

Skew-Symmetric Splitting And Stability Of High Order Central Schemes, Björn Sjögreen, Helen C. Yee, Dmitry Kotov

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

Skew-symmetric splittings of the inviscid flux derivative for high order central schemes are studied and developed to improve their numerical stability without added high order numerical dissipation for long time wave propagations and long time integration of compressible turbulent flows. For flows containing discontinuities and multiscale turbulence fluctuations the Yee & Sjogreen [33] and Kotov et al. [15, 14] high order nonlinear filter approach is utilized in conjunction with the skew-symmetric form of high order central schemes. Due to the incomplete hyperbolic nature of the conservative ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) governing equations, not all of the skew-symmetric splittings for gas dynamics …

Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutics Of The Self: Living In The Truth, Fergus James Laughland Jan 2017

Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutics Of The Self: Living In The Truth, Fergus James Laughland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the relationship of selfhood and ethics from the competing philosophical frameworks developed by Paul Ricoeur and Alain Badiou. Seeking “nothing short of a full victory” on the “battlefield” of history, Badiou argues that Ricoeur deceives his readers by hiding the relationship of the self to history. The purpose of this deception is to defend a definition of history that allows for a Providential sense of history whereby the past could be actively forgotten whereby crimes could be forgiven. In this work I examine Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of the self as developed in Oneself as Another (Soi-même comme …

Rationalizing The Band Gap Tunability Of Semiconductors Via Electronic Structure Calculations, Matthew N. Srnec Jan 2017

Rationalizing The Band Gap Tunability Of Semiconductors Via Electronic Structure Calculations, Matthew N. Srnec

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The polymorphs of titanium dioxide and various diamond-like semiconductor materials are promising candidates in photovoltaic solar cell applications. Several of these polymorphs have been studied with experimental and computational methods, which often aim at tuning the electronic structure, particularly the band gap value of the crystalline solid. Prior studies report that the addition of a substituent into the structure of titanium dioxide decreases its band gap value, but the reasons for this are unknown. Possible explanations for the change in band gap involve the substituent atom's crystal radius, electronegativity, and ionization energy. Understanding the cause of these changes will provide …
